Passage 1
Tu Youyou, a committed and patient scientist, has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine because of the discovery of artemisinin, a crucial drug for malaria,
which is a big hit.
Actually, artemisinin has become a vital part of the treatment for malaria around the world.
Having graduated from university, Tu Youyou
worked at the China
Academy of Traditional
Chinese Medicine.
Over several decades, she committed herself to the medical research with the objective of discovering a
better treatment for malaria.
In 1967, Tu Youyou was chosen
as a researcher of a team of scientists with the purpose of
discovering a new treatment for malaria.
They evaluated 280,000 plants and tested 380 distinct ancient Chinese medical treatments with tireless effort.
Tu’s team tried boiling fresh
wormwood, and using the liquid obtained from this to treat malaria, but it was in vain.
Under no circumstances did Tu
Youyou acknowledge defeat.
She insisted on analysing the
medical texts again and drew a conclusion that boiling the
sweet wormwood apparently destroyed its medical properties.
Through a lower temperature to draw out the extract, she
discovered the effective substance.
The team’s hard work
eventually paid off in 1971. Artemisinin, as great as penicillin, not only saves many lives, but helps Chinese medicine to be spread around the world.

Passage 2
Einstein was not only a genius, but also a very gentle man.
He had a thick moustache and
long white hair.
Despite his peculiarities, he was loved by his friends and neighbours whom he encountered.
Albert Einstein was not a novelist or a politician but a professor.
Maybe unlike the former, who mostly uses his extraordinary creative genius to inspire people’s passion by writing novels, he paid more attention to academic research.
Generally speaking, a politician wants to found his own theories and tries to come to power.
Yet as a scientist, Albert
Einstein hoped to make remarkable achievements and have more inventions and patents which can be good to humans.
He made numerous contributions to the world, among which the most well-known are the general theory of relativity and the famous formula E=mc².
He earned a doctorate in physics in 1905 and gradually became as famous as the new Isaac Newton.
Unfortunately, circumstances changed in 1933.
When Hitler came to power in Germany, Einstein, who was Jewish, couldn’t devote himself to his academic institutions.
As a consequence, he had to flee Germany.
He finally took up a position as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA.
