When I work in Shanghai, sometimes people ask me “Where do you live?”, I would tell them “600 South Wanping Road” and wait for their reaction. Many people get the joke and laugh, but not everyone does so. Talking about the address of the Shanghai Mental Health Center can make people feel uncomfortable.

In the past, mental illness was avoided being discussed in public. People thought having depression or other mental problems was a personal weakness and brought shame to families. But now we understand that mental illness is just like other health problems. It can be treated, and people’s lives can be improved.
