I’m Amy. I’ve been writing stories since I was about eight years old. My parents always read to me and I learned to read myself when I was four. So I’ve been in love with books for a long time.
I started inventing stories to read to my friend on the school bus. He loved them. Then I sent one to a competition because my teacher suggested it. I won second prize and my story appeared in a magazine. I was so glad. People ask me where I usually write. I used to write in the school library but these days I write in my study so that I can either be quiet or play music if I want to. Another question I am often asked is where my ideas for stories come from. Some writers keep a notebook where they write down interesting things they see or hear about. I started doing that. When Mum asks you to smoke outside, you think she’s just being mean (刻薄的). Well, I don’t think she is. Not many people like the smell of smoke in their house or on their clothes, and Mum doesn’t like it either. What’s more, doctors have found that more and more people who don’t smoke are falling ill. It’s caused by secondary smoking, which could make Mum and me ill too.

In the US, it is normal for men to shake hands when they meet, but it is quite unusual for men to kiss when they greet each other. Greetings are casual — a handshake, a smile and a “hello” will do just fine.
The British often simply say “hello” when they meet friends. They usually shake hands only when they meet for the first time. Social kissing, often just a peck (轻吻) on the cheek, is common in an informal situation between men and women and also between women who know each other very well.
In Japan, the common greeting for both men and women is to bow when they greet someone, instead of giving a handshake or a hug.
In Albania, men shake hands when greeting one another. A kiss on the cheek may be also common if there is a close relationship. Women may shake hands or kiss each other on both cheeks.
In Armenia, by tradition, a woman needs to wait for a man to offer his hand for a handshake. Between good friends and family members, a kiss on the cheek and a hug are also common.

Plants Crying in Pain
Try to think about this: you sit down and begin to eat a tomato. Suddenly, the tomato starts to scream (尖叫)! This would never really happen. But a new study shows that plants make sounds when they are cut off their stems.
Scientists in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声传声器) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes. They listened to three groups of plants.
The first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times every hour. The third group only made the sound once every hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the study team told CNN.
Scientists believed that animals and insects may listen to the sounds. For example, the sound can tell them that the plant is stressed and not good for laying eggs on. When an animal wants to eat plants, it can also use sound to choose which one to eat.
The scientists also listened to other crops such as wheat (小麦) and corn. They also made more sounds when stressed. Scientists said the study can help farmers in the future. They can better take care of the crops by “hearing” how plants feel.

In September, at the RCF Experimental School in, Beijing, Grade 8 students put on a cool biology show on the ground floor of the lab building.
They showed the fun biology models and paintings they made to show what they learned in biology class. Some painted different body systems on T-shirts, while others made models of plant cells (细胞) and human organs (器官) using different materials.
“When autumn comes, many people around me catch a cold,” said 14-year-old Liu Huanzhen. “This made me want to make a model of the lungs (肺).”
Liu loves the art of rolling paper (衍纸). So, he decided to make a lung model this way. He used different colors to show the main parts of the lungs, including the lobes (肺叶) in red and the trachea (气管) in light green. Carefully rolling and shaping the paper, he then glued the pieces to a piece of cardboard (硬纸板).
“Although it was quite difficult, the results turned out to be great,” Liu said. “I was very happy while working on it, and now I can remember the parts of the lungs better.”
This fun activity has helped students understand things more easily. “The digestive (消化的) system on a T-shirt clearly shows where it is in the human body, like the stomach,” said 14-year-old Yang Yuyan.
“The event lets students see how cool biology is. It may make them want to learn more about it,” said their biology teacher, Mr. Li.

Dear Dad,
I’m writing this email because I want to ask you to stop smoking, and it’s too difficult to talk about it face to face. You already know that smoking is bad for you. I’ve found out that it causes many illnesses. Did you know that thousands of people die from smoking every year in Britain? I don’t want you to be one of them.
I know that it is very difficult to stop smoking, but you must try. Please see the doctor and ask him for help. We will do anything we can to help you. Please don’t smoke!
Your loving daughter,
Kate

As the most popular drink in the world, tea is no stranger to us. But how much do you know about tea sets (茶具)?
In general, tea sets become smaller and simpler after many changes throughout history. There are few records of tea sets before the Tang Dynasty. In Cha Jing (The Classic of Tea), a great book written by Lu Yu in the Tang Dynasty, 28 kinds of tools used for making and drinking tea are mentioned.
A tea bottle of the Song Dynasty.
The tea sets in the Tang Dynasty (朝代) were simple while the ones in the Song Dynasty were gorgeous (华丽的). In the Song Dynasty, the tea bottle often had a big belly (肚子), a long neck, and a curved (弧形的) mouth, which could control the water better when filling a cup. Cups made of black glaze (黑釉) were especially loved by people then.
In the Ming and Qing dynasties, tea sets became simple again, and those made of gold and silver gradually disappeared. To test the color of the tea, white tea sets were more popular. In the Qing Dynasty, purple clay tea sets made in Yixing, Jiangsu developed quickly and were loved widely. It is said that tea made by Yixing’s purple clay tea sets still tastes good after being kept in the teapot for one night even in hot summer.
