On the night of 14th June, 1904, New York's Chinatown was in a deep gloom(低迷).For the past 20 years, the restaurants were filled with those crazy about a taste of real Chinese cooking “chop suey”.But suddenly, all that seemed at risk.A few days earlier, a chef named Lem Sen had arrived, saying he had invented it a decade before while working at a restaurant in San Francisco. His recipe had been stolen by an American diner to make money.Through his lawyer, he demanded restaurants pay him for using his recipe.
Chop suey was first mentioned by Chinese-American journalist Wong Chin Foo in a list of common dishes he thought most attractive to Western tastes. As he explained, “Each Chinese cook has his own recipe. The main parts are pork, bacon, chicken, mushroom, bamboo shoots, onion, and pepper, while accidental ones are duck, beef, salted black beans etc.Yet it is often considered by Westerners that this is a ‘national dish of China’ more than any other dish they've known.”
Although a hyperbolic way to introduce this dish, it clearly showed that chop suey was indeed of Chinese .Where exactly its roots lay has been debated, but it was probably first cooked in Taishan, Guangdong, where most early immigrants to America had grown up.In 1866, the journalist Allan Forman noticed it as a delicious dish despite its “mysterious nature”, and nine years later, the first recipe appeared in magazines, with some un-Chinese ingredients thrown in.
It was not long before a myth making began. In 1896, Li Hongzhang visited New York, and newspapers mistakenly reported that while refusing Western dishes at a banquet(宴会), he had enthusiastically accepted a plate of chop suey. This caused a great hit, and many who never heard of it before simply assumed that it was introduced to the US by Li Hongzhang, which accidentally promoted the dish's popularity.

It would be easy to believe that Mother's Day was created by a greeting card company. , the day is celebrated with special sales and brunches, lots of presents and massive advertising campaigns. But the day was actually conceived more than a century ago by Anna Jarvis of West Virginia as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.
Jarvis's mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, helped start “Mothers' Day Work Clubs”, teaching women how to care for their children.During the Civil War, she organized “Mothers' Friendship Day”, where mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers met to try to promote harmony. The younger Jarvis was inspired by all the things her mother had accomplished with her social work.
When Jarvis was young, she overheard her mother praying, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will find a memorial mother's day honoring her for the matchless service she offers to humanity in every field of life.” When her mother died in 1905, Jarvis looked through all the sympathy cards she received. She underlined all the kind words that praised her mother, reading them over and over. The outpouring of kindness for her mother inspired her to create a day to honor all mothers.
The white carnation was her mother's favorite flower, so it became the symbol for the day.She said it symbolized the truth, purity and charity of a mother's love. Her idea of celebrating Mother's Day was wearing a carnation while visiting your mother or maybe going to together.Children were also encouraged to write letters to their mothers, sharing the depths of their appreciation.
The first official Mother's Day events were held on May 10,1908, at the church where her mother taught Sunday School in Grafton, West Virginia, and at the Wanamaker's department store auditorium(礼堂) in Philadelphia.Jarvis didn't attend the event in Grafton, but she sent 500 white carnations.

A Memorable Thanksgiving Day
My classmate John invited me to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with his family. On that day, all members of John's family gathered together at their home. His parents prepared many traditional foods, such as turkey and sweet potatoes. After the meal, I had a nice time chatting and playing interesting games with them. At night, we all went to a local shelter to offer food and help the people in need.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy's family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.
“And how can I help you, little lady?” Pappy's voice was joyful.
“Hello, sir,” the little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I'd like to buy a present, sir.”
“Well, let's see,” Pappy said, “who is this present for?”
“My grandpa. It's for my grandpa. But I don't know what to get.”
Pappy began to make suggestions, “How about a pocket watch? It's in good condition.” The little girl didn't answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy's face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.
“This is just right,” the little girl said. “Mom says grandpa loves music.”
Just then, Pappy's expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl's heart, he told her, “I'm sorry, Missy. That's not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”
The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “No, I don't think so.”
In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
One possible version:
With a giant tear in her eye, the little girl looked up at him.She forced a smile, murmuring “Thank you” and made her way to the door. Suddenly, Pappy thought of his daughter. Driven by a sense of sympathy, Pappy called out, “How much have you got to spend?” Hearing this, the little girl counted money in her purse—two dollars altogether. After thinking for a few seconds, Pappy announced, “Today is Christmas Day and this is your lucky day. The bell costs exactly two dollars.” The child danced out with great joy, holding the special bell in her hand.
Later that evening when Pappy was closing up the shop, he heard a familiar ringing. He couldn't believe his ears. The girl stood in the doorway, ringing the bell happily. Feeling puzzled, Pappy got close to her and asked, “Have you changed your mind, Miss?” “No. My mom says the present is for you.” explained the little girl. Then, her mother stepped in. Tears filling her eyes, she cried out cheerfully, “Hello, Dad.”
