Hold your head up high
I was 15 months old, a happy and carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. From then on, my injured, sightless, cloudy gray eye lived on with me.
Sometimes people asked me embarrassing (使人难堪的) questions. When kids played games, I was the “monster”. I grew up imagining that everyone looked down on me.
Yet my mum would say to me, “Hold your head up high and face the world.” I began to rely on that saying.
As a child, I thought Mum meant, “Be careful or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking.” As a teenager, I usually looked down to hide my shame. But I found that when I held my head up high, people liked me.
In high school I even became the class president, but on the inside I still felt like a monster. All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mum and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, “Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside instead of your appearance.”
My mum’s love was the spark that gave me confidence. I had faced hardships (艰难), and learned not only to appreciate myself but to have deep compassion (同情) for others.
“Hold your head up high” has been heard many times in my home. I say it to my children. The gift my mum gave me lives on.

One day, Bassanio came to visit Antonio. This was not unusual because they were good friends. But the visit was more important than usual for Bassanio. He already owed Antonio a lot of money, but now he wanted to borrow some more.
“I have been spending more money than I earn,” began Bassanio. “I already owe you a lot of money. I will tell you how I am going to get enough money to pay back all the money I owe.”
“Yes, tell me,” said Antonio. “If I can help you, I will.”
“When I was a boy at school,” began Bassanio, “I sometimes lost a ball when I was playing. When that happened, I would throw another ball in exactly the same way and watch it carefully. I would often find the two balls together. You might think of your money that way. The money you gave me is the first ball. It is lost, and I know it’s my fault. But if you gave me some more money, it could be like that second ball and help you get all the money back. I will give back the money you give me now as well as the money that I have already lost.”
Antonio invited him to continue.
Bassanio told him about a rich young lady in Belmont. Her name was Portia. Her father died and left her a lot of money. She was beautiful as well as rich and she was not married. Many men came from all over the world to court her but nobody had succeeded. Bassanio had met Portia before, and he knew that she liked him. Each year on Feb.21, UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) holds an International Mother INTERNATIONAL Language Day (IMLD). The event is to help people to pay attention to the disappearance of the world’s languages: many of them are disappearing each year. UNESCO sees this as a terrible fact.
What happens when a language dies out? Something great is lost—not just sounds and marks but the way that people understand the world and communicate with each other. We keep different cultures and traditions through languages. Kill a language and all these are killed too.
Through IMLD, more and more people come to realize the terrible situation and try to stop it. Google’s 2018 Endangered (濒临灭绝的) Languages Project is a good example. Many speakers and protectors of endangered languages upload (上传) texts, audios and videos to the project website. They want to introduce the way that people communicate and express themselves around the world.
The Myaamia Project is the same kind of effort to revive the language spoken by the Miami tribes (部落) of the United States. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which died out in the 1960s.
These activities give life to those endangered languages. People who work to keep languages alive are not limited to the past. Many young people design apps and use social media to support their activities. They “spread the word” to save the word.
So, while the problem of disappearing languages remains a very serious one, there is hope. We all have a special feeling of our mother language. This is why we should remember the wise words of late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language that goes to his heart.”
37. UNESCO holds IMLD every year in order to help people to _________.
A. learn and use endangered languages
B. show their talents in learning languages
C. practice reading skills of mother languages
D. realize the situation of endangered languages
38. What did people do in Google’s 2018 Endangered Languages Project?
A Discuss how to make good use of Google.
B. Offer online courses on endangered languages.
C. Share materials about endangered languages online.
D. Translate endangered languages into mother languages.
39. What does the underlined word “revive” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 创造 B. 学习 C. 复活 D. 清除
40. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A. It is more difficult to protect endangered languages.
B. The disappearance of languages has already stopped.
C. Young people don’t care about endangered languages.
D. Young people have creative ways to protect languages.

Many forget about spring break compared to the longer winter and summer vacations. Still, spring break is usually a whole week off from schools in the US, so students make sure to take advantage of this time. Always taking place in March or April, spring break is a period when US students often take part in different kinds of activities.
North Carolina, the state where I live, has some of the best hiking trails in the US and is home to many sunny beaches. My family takes spring break as an opportunity to do outdoor activities. During this time, we head outside to explore new hiking destinations (目的地) nearby, connecting with nature and enjoying exciting experiences.
Those who are not outdoorsy pick a more relaxing spring break experience. Going to nearby beaches, shopping and attending local events become common activities for those who prefer to stay closer to home.
Though students don’t usually get homework over spring break, many upperclassmen still have busy schedules as they want to focus on personal growth. Students can often be seen taking this time to catch up with schoolwork and prepare for the last days of the school year.
Students see spring break as a chance to relax before the busy school time begins again. Whether enjoying the natural beauty of hiking trails or focusing on personal growth, students make the most of this time.

I had faced hardships (艰难) and learned not only to appreciate myself but to have deep compassion (同情) for others.
“Hold your head up high” has been heard many times in my home. I say it to my children. The gift my mum gave me lives on.

A. Discuss how to make good use of Google.
B. Offer online courses on endangered languages.

D. Translate endangered languages into mother languages.
39. What does the underlined word “revive” mean in Paragraph 4?

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题,每个题目的答案不超过5个单词。

Nowadays, we students have much more spare time than ever before, but how to make our spare time more meaningful? My schoolmates give the following suggestions.
First, it’s good to help our parents do some housework to show our love for them. Second, we will know more about the world by reading. Third, it is a good chance for us to get close to nature and relax ourselves. In my opinion, we can do some sports to make us stronger and healthier.
