教材分析
本模块呈现了两封书信往来,叙述同学之间相处时出现的问题和建议的解决办法。本课时着重学习Agony Aunt的回信。回信先剖析了Ben的问题,即“言多必失,祸从口出”,然后分析了责任,并进行开解劝导。根据Ben的求助要求,“What should I say to him?”,“Should I say anything to my teammate?”,Agony Aunt针对问题提出相处的原则是“think before you speak”,并给出三条具体建议:向队友道歉,与朋友开诚布公,管理自己的情绪。

在本课学习结束时,学生能够:
1. 根据图表信息提炼概括Agony Aunt给出的三条建议,并与Ben的问题一一对应。

Step 1 Warming-up
Look at the pictures and answer the question.
What’s the meaning of an American saying “loose lips sink ships”?
设计意图:通过观察图片解读“祸从口出”,培养读图和联想能力。
Step 2 Pre-reading
Work in groups and answer the questions.
(1) Who is the “loose lips”?
(2) What does “sink ships” refer to in Ben’s case?
(3) Can you use this saying to explain Ben’s agony?
设计意图:在理解“祸从口出”基础上,结合上节课学过的课文内容进一步解释其所指。复习已学内容,扫清新课文的单词障碍,初步认识Ben所遇到的问题的本质,导入主题。
Step 3 While-reading
1. Read the text and decide whether the following statements are true or false. If it is false, correct it with the right information.
2. Try to describe Agony Aunt. Who is she?
3. Complete the sentences with expressions from the passage.
4. Match the suggestions to Ben’s problems.
设计意图:精读文章,提取相关信息,提炼文章核心内容,帮助学生正确理解文章,梳理文章结构。
Step 4 Post-reading
1. Role-play: One acts as Ben to tell his agony, and the other as Agony Aunt to give suggestions.
2. Choose the best summary of the letters.
3. Read the text again and notice how Agony Aunt gave suggestions. Then answer the questions.
(1) What is the function of the three red words?
(2) Is it right to use “you” to replace “we”? How would Ben feel if it happened?
4. Work in groups and talk about the suggestions.
设计意图:通过多任务型练习,帮助学生加深对信件内容和功能的理解的同时,描述自己给出的建议与Agony Aunt给出的建议之间的异同点,有意注意语言表达,进行自我反思。调动学生思维主动性,增补回信中的建议,加强处理人际关系时的策略能力,丰富语言表达。

1. Guess the meaning of “pull one’s weight”.

4. Work in groups. Share your experience about “Loose lips sink ships” in your life. The other group members try to imitate Agony Aunt to give suggestions.

Step 6 Assignment
1. Suppose you are Ben who is going to talk to his best friend and the point guard. Write down what he will say to them.
2. Search more sayings about watching out your words and actions, like “speedy as a worker and cautious as a speaker”.
