At 9: 30 a. m. on a Wednesday morning, I received a notification (通知) that I’d already picked up my phone 30 times that day! “11 left until you go over your goal of 41 pickups,” my screen read. “Put your phone down until 9: 52 a. m. ! Enjoy your time living in the moment.”
These updates were sent via Moment, an app that tracks my screen time, created by Kevin Holesh in 2014 to fight his own device addiction. He was working as an independent app developer, spending hours each day staring at screens. After work, Holesh found that he was looking mindlessly online instead of talking to his wife or taking his dogs for a walk.
“I wanted a way of seeing how much time I was sinking into my phone,” he said. “So I came up with something that could monitor my screen time.” Holesh found that he was spending 75 minutes on his phone a day. He added a function to the app that informed him whenever his screen time was more than 40 minutes. “My phone would make a sound like a bee, and I’d go and do something else. It was like a little angel on my shoulder pushing me in the right direction,” he said. Holesh figured that if the system worked for him, it would work for others, and later that year he made Moment a free app. To date, it has been downloaded 8 million times.
Beside, Moment also has a “coach” function, offering guided programs to help users focus and be more productive, for $ 7. 99 a month.
“I am so much happier, I sleep better, I read more, I take better care of myself, and most of all I am present in my day-to-day life,” Jack, a user said. Similar comments on Moment reflect a growing consciousness around “digital wellness”, the name given to lifestyle practices that encourage healthy device use.
4. What does the inspiration of Moment come from?
A. The creator’s own experience.
B. The sound made by honey bees.
C Complaints from family members.
D. The widespread digital addiction.
5. What does Moment do at the expected screen time?
A. Monitor the screen and keep a record.
B. Make a noise to remind the user.
C. Turn off the phone immediately.
D. Force the user to take a rest.
6. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 4?
A. Persuade readers to buy the app.
B. Provide readers with some advice.
C. Recommend a coach to the readers.
D. Introduce more information of the app.
7. In which part of a website will you find this text?
A. Fashion and Business. B. Sports and Entertainment.
C. Health and Lifestyle. D. Art and Design.

Computer-generated (产生) writers…writing computer-generated stories?
Sports Illustrated is the latest media company to see its good name damaged—if not totally dishonest—about who or what is writing its stories at the beginning of the artificial intelligence (AI) age. The once-powerful media company said it was firing a company that produced articles for its website written by writers who clearly don’t exist.
This week, the Futurism website reported that Sports Illustrated used stories written by writers it could not identify. Upon questioning Sports Illustrated, Futurism said all of the writers with Al-generated photos disappeared from the magazine’s website. No explanation was offered. Futurism quoted (引用) an unnamed person at the magazine who said AI was used in the creation of some content as well—“no matter how much they say that it’s not.”
Sports Illustrated said the articles in question were created by a third-party company, AdVon Commerce, which made the magazine believe that they were written and edited by humans. AdVon had its writers use a pen name, “actions we don’t agree on,” Sports Illustrated said.
Earlier this year, experiments with AI went wrong at media companies. Many companies are testing the new technology at a time when human workers fear it could cost jobs. But it doesn’t work in journalism, which builds and markets its values-based products on truth. “Although there’s nothing wrong in media companies’ experimenting with AI, the mistake is in trying to hide it,” said Tom Rosenstiel, a University of Maryland professor who teaches journalism ethnics (新闻道德). “If you want to be in the truth-telling business, you shouldn’t tell lies,” Rosenstiel said, “A secret is a form of lying.”
8. What can we learn about Sports Illustrated according to Paragraph 2?
A. It was an honest media company. B. AI might do harm to its good name.
C. It fired a company started at an AI Age. D. Al made it the latest technology company.
9. Why did the Futurism question Sports Illustrated?
A. Because Sports Illustrated used the same writers to create stories.
B. Because AI-generated stories were used on the magazine’s website.
C. Because Sports Illustrated quoted an unnamed person at the magazine.
D. Because AI-generated photos disappeared from the magazine’s website.
10. Which “cost” below is in the closet meaning to the “cost” in the last paragraph?
A. This dictionary cost him 10 dollars.
B. The house cost my aunt an arm and a leg.
C. Such behaviour could cost you your place in the team.
D. I didn’t get my dream sports shoes because they cost a lot.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Media Companies that Use AI Tool.
B. Writing Computer-generated Stories.
C. Al Writing Ruining Media Company’s Fame.
D. Firing Companies that Produce Al-written Stories.

Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks as my main means of reading literature. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. My consumption of new books has doubled as a result-but a recent paper makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my comprehension.
The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel, both at the University of Chicago, and it draws from the “dual process model” of mental processing. According to this view, we have two ways of assessing information. System 1 is intuitive (直觉的) , relying on natural ability and feeling. It is quick, but likely exposed to misinformation. System 2 is analytical, involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think through the material step by step.
For decades, psychologists have designed various tests to determine which of these two systems a person is using. Imagine you’re helping prepare for a small dinner party and are tasked with arranging the dining settings for seven guests. Instinctively, you lay out seven complete sets of cutlery (餐具) . However, your friend mentions that among the guests is a very young child, leading you to rethink your initial set-up. Realizing the child won’t need a standard set of cutlery as the adult, you opt to replace it with a child-friendly spoon. That is the kind of analytical process.
Keysar and Geipel’s brilliant idea was to investigate whether the sensory form — seeing vs. Hearing — of the information would make a difference. They found that it did: when answering these kinds of simple questions, participants were more likely to make errors when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written,
A greater reliance on our feelings could be a problem if we are consuming information that needs logical study. For this reason, I will return to reading non-fiction with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy to go with the flow of my emotions while my critical mind takes a break.
12. What does the author think of listening to audiobooks?
A. It is relaxing. B. It is demanding. C. It is economical. D. It is time-consuming.
13. Which of the following best describes System 2 model?
A. Question-centered. B. Fully automatic. C. Fairly reliable. D. Emotion-involved.
14. Why is the dining setting task mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To present a fact. B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To illustrate a view.
15. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Critical thinking is a must in reading. B. Ways of processing information differ.
C. Listening to books comes at a price. D. Reading non-fiction books benefits.

When in fifth grade, I had a big dream: I wanted to win the school’s Science Fair. The prize was a shiny gold medal, and every year, students from all the grades would gather in the gym to see who the winners were. I didn’t think too much about how to make it happen — I just wanted to win.
However, there was a problem. I didn’t really have an idea for my project. I wasn’t sure what would be impressive enough to win, so I came up with a quick solution: I’d build a rocket. Rockets seemed cool, and I assumed if I made one that looked awesome, that should be enough.
So, I went to the store with my mom and grabbed a bunch of supplies: cardboard tubes, glue, markers, and glitter (闪光装饰物). My plan was simple — make the rocket look amazing, and everyone would be impressed. I didn’t bother learning how rockets worked, and I didn’t think about running tests. I figured if it looked good, that would be all I needed to win.
For the next few days, I worked hard on making my rocket shine. I glued the cardboard together, added fins to the sides, and covered the whole thing in glitter. It sparkled under the light, and I thought to myself, “This has to be enough.” But at the back of my mind, I knew, the Science Fair was supposed to be about learning and showing something scientific. Still, I ignored that feeling.
As the Science Fair approached, I spent all my time on my rocket’s look. I didn’t do any research, didn’t learn about thrust or fuel, and definitely didn’t test anything. I convinced myself that would be enough.
The big day finally arrived. I walked into the gym, proudly carrying my glitter-covered rocket. I set it up on the display table and watched as the judges made their way around the room. When they stopped at my project, my heart raced. This was my moment.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One of the judges asked softly, “Can you explain how your rocket works?”

One of the judges asked softly, “Can you explain how your rocket works?” I froze. My stomach dropped. I hadn’t prepared for that question. “Uh…well, it’s a rocket,” I stammered. “It looks really cool and, um, shiny.” The judges raised their eyebrows. One of them asked, “Did you test it to see if it could fly? Did you research how rockets are built?” I felt my face turn red. “No,” I admitted. “I didn’t test it, and I didn’t really learn about rockets.” The judges nodded politely and moved on. My heart sank. Deep down, I knew I hadn’t really tried.
When the awards were announced, my name wasn’t called. I didn’t win anything. My rocket, with all its glitter and shine, wasn’t enough. It wasn’t about how good it looked; it was about the effort and care that went into the project. I realized then that nothing’s enough if you don’t care enough to do it well. The next year, when the Science Fair came around again, I made sure my project wasn’t just cool to look at. I researched, I tested, and I cared about what I was doing. I didn’t win the gold medal, but I knew I had done my best. And that felt like a victory all on its own.
