They are strong, beautiful animals, and they are also big. Many males are around 250 kg in weight, while female Siberian tigers weigh around 170 kg on average. These tigers like to eat animals such as elk and wild boar, often hunting at night and travelling many miles. They are powerful hunters, but there are only about 500 left in the world. There are several reasons for this. First, some people hunt the tigers for food or medicine. Second, too many trees are cut down, which destroys their natural habitats and hunting areas. A lot of their prey likes to live in the forest. When the forest is cut down, the tiger’s prey is gone and so they get hungry and weak. That’s the bad news, but there is good news. People around the world want to help Siberian tigers. For example, across both Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces in China, the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park helps protect them. There are cameras all around the forest. Scientists and other people can watch the tigers, and make sure they are safe. With the cameras, the scientists can also watch where the tigers’ young cubs are kept by their mothers. Park rangers help too. They protect animals in the park. One way they can do this is to keep other people away from the places with the young cubs. This means the tigers’ cubs can grow up safely with their mothers. Thanks to this, the number of tigers is getting larger and larger! The rangers also teach others about why the tigers and forests are important. As such, more people want to protect the forests and avoid cutting down too many trees. With more trees, the tigers and their babies have more places for their homes. They also have more food. The rangers are doing great things. By protecting them and helping to teach us about them, we see how important Siberian tigers are and that we must protect them, too. Comprehension A. Read the text. T F It’s OK to give a baby kitten the milk you drink. T F C. Circle the correct words. Here’s some advice to help you take care of the kitten you found. First, how old is your kitten? Cats put on weight quickly / slowly from birth. You can guess her age by how much she weighs. Cats also change a lot during the first two weeks, so watching what she can do helps you understand her age too. Second, the food a kitten can eat is different for each week / year. You can give her milk until she is four to six weeks old. After she turns three / four weeks old, you can add food to her meals. For example, you can give her a small piece of a boiled / fried egg or a little bit of your pizza / toast when you make breakfast. And don’t forget to give her clean water every day. Third, it’s important to keep your kitten dry / warm. You can use a mat / blanket or give her a bed to sleep in.
