“Can I have that book? I’m still curious,” said a fourth-grade student staring at a bin full of unopened books, magazines, and a couple of unopened, plastic-wrapped art supplies at a public elementary school in Portland, Oregon recently.
These unopened items are the result of a student resource waste examination conducted in partnership with the school’s Eco Club, the University of Oregon, and the National Education Association. Some desks have been cleared of materials, some partially used, and others hold untouched, unopened supplies. And while some students have all the materials they need, others remain resource-hungry.
Connecting the dots between these two kinds of students is the idea of a “share shelf,” a way to address both student resource needs and material waste in school supply programs during the school year and summer. Share shelves are exactly what they sound like: places to drop off things like packs of pencils, notebooks, or unopened boxes of crayons for other students to pick up free of charge.
With encouragement from the Department of Education, a growing number of school supply programs across the country are now offering share shelves. There are numerous benefits — economic, environmental, and educational — for supporting share shelves. Share shelves enable us to use the federal funds we invest in equipping 25 million students each day for their highest and greatest good. When students offer their unopened, unused materials to other students, they expand the impact of our investment in their educational resources. Share shelves also promote the ethics of resource conservation and respect for the impacts of material waste. And unused supplies in storage create clutter and waste resources. Habitual sharing of unused materials can influence organizational habits at home and the behavior patterns students will carry into adulthood.
Portland fourth-grade teacher Alex Carter said her students love the school’s share shelves. “What they don’t take, we teachers take back to our classroom or departmental storage rooms to share with students in the afternoons and/or in after-school programs.”
4. Why does the author mention the unopened supplies?
A. To highlight the need to improve school supply programs.
B. To show the problem of resource waste in schools.
C. To stress the importance of providing more supplies.
D. To illustrate the lack of organization in classrooms.
5. What can students do at share shelves?
A. Get free unopened supplies. B. Sell their unused supplies.
C. Exchange supplies with others. D. Throw away their waste supplies.
6. What do we know about share shelves from the text?
A. They are opposed by many teachers.
B. They are not well supported by schools.
C. They have a positive impact on multiple aspects.
D. They mainly focus on solving supply waste problems.
7. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A scientific research report. B. A school brochure.
C. An educational magazine. D. A food industry newsletter.

Previous studies have demonstrated that contact with nature benefits mental well-being, especially for those who live in cities. For example, the risk of developing the two most universal mental disorders in the world, depression and anxiety, is 71% lower in urban citizens who live near green spaces. Most of these studies, however, haven’t considered the extent to which these benefits depend on natural diversity.
To address this gap in research, my colleagues and I examined whether environments with a wealth of natural features, such as trees, plants, waterways, and wildlife, would bring greater mental health benefits. Between April 2018 and September 2023, we gathered data through the Urban Mind app, which measures the users’ experience of urban and rural living. Nearly 2,000 people submitted 41, 000 assessments of their environment and mental well-being throughout the day.
We found that green spaces with high natural diversity have more mental health benefits than those with low natural diversity, which suggests the benefits of nature for mental well-being can be maximized by protecting and promoting biodiversity in our natural environments. This means moving away from heavily managed pockets of greenery, like landscaped gardens and parks of mown grass, towards spaces like wild grassland and waterways that provide a more attractive habitat for a range of plants and animals.
A recent survey of 15, 000 households found that those who lived near natural areas rich in plants and bird species reported lower rates of mental health issues. In fact, benefits can be experienced through daily brief incidental (偶然的) encounters with biodiverse nature.
Biodiverse nature provides more stimulation for the senses, which may improve concentration, reduce mental tiredness and restore memory. Also, people living in or near a natural space tend to spend more time exercising or socializing outdoors, both of which promote the release of mood-boosting hormones. The science, thus, is clear: Biodiversity is critical not only for the health of our planet, but also for human mental health.
8. What does the author intend to show by mentioning previous studies?
A. The reason for their own study. B. The findings of their own study.
C. The health benefits of nature. D. The problems with urban citizens.
9. Why should we move away from landscaped gardens and parks of mown grass?
A. They are energy-consuming. B. They are of low biodiversity.
C. They are doing damage to wildlife health. D. They are possibly home to natural threats.
10. How can biodiverse nature benefit our mental health according to the text?
A. By maintaining our energy. B. By beautifying our environment.
C. By encouraging outdoor activities. D. By reducing the necessity to socialize.
11. Which of the following might be the author’s opinion about biodiversity?
A. It is beneficial to memory and tiredness.
B. It is faced with human threats in many cities.
C. It is mainly responsible for our good mental health.
D. It is vital to the health of the earth and human beings.
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第一段“Most of these studies, however, haven’t considered the extent to which these benefits depend on natural diversity.(然而,这些研究中的大多数都没有考虑到这些好处在多大程度上取决于自然多样性。)”和第二段“To address this gap in research, my colleagues and I examined whether environments with a wealth of natural features, such as trees, plants, waterways, and wildlife, would bring greater mental health benefits.(为了解决研究中的这一空白,我和我的同事们研究了具有丰富自然特征的环境,如树木、植物、水道和野生动物,是否会带来更大的心理健康益处。)” 故选A。
根据第三段“We found that green spaces with high natural diversity have more mental health benefits than those with low natural diversity, which suggests the benefits of nature for mental well-being can be maximized by protecting and promoting biodiversity in our natural environments. This means moving away from heavily managed pockets of greenery, like landscaped gardens and parks of mown grass, towards spaces like wild grassland and waterways that provide a more attractive habitat for a range of plants and animals.(研究发现,自然多样性高的绿地比自然多样性低的绿地对心理健康的益处更大,这表明通过保护和促进自然环境的生物多样性,自然对心理健康的益处可以最大化。这意味着从精心管理的绿地,如景观花园和修剪过的草地公园,转向像野生草原和水道这样的空间,为各种动植物提供更有吸引力的栖息地。)”可知,我们要远离景观花园和修剪过的草地公园是因为它们的生物多样性低。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Also, people living in or near a natural space tend to spend more time exercising or socializing outdoors, both of which promote the release of mood-boosting hormones. The science, thus, is clear: Biodiversity is critical not only for the health of our planet, but also for human mental health.(此外,生活在自然环境中或附近的人往往会花更多的时间在户外锻炼或社交,这两种活动都会促进情绪提升激素的释放。因此,科学是明确的:生物多样性不仅对我们星球的健康至关重要,而且对人类的心理健康也至关重要。)”可知,生物多样性通过鼓励户外活动有益于我们的心理健康。故选C。
【11题详解】

The field of anti-ageing medicine has exploded in recent years due to discoveries about the fundamental biology of ageing which are translated into experimental therapies (疗法). The latest fountain of youth to pour from the lab comes in the form of vaccines (疫苗) against age-related conditions — cancer, heart disease, dementia and more. The first of these could be available by the end of the decade. All-purpose anti-ageing injections are also in development.
The upsides of such vaccines are clear. Anything that limits the impact of age-related conditions on people who live into old age — not to mention on the loved ones who often end up caring for them — has to be welcomed. They also promise to lessen effect on the increasingly societal and economic costs of these diseases.
But as with all anti-ageing interventions, there are potential downsides too. If millions of people live significantly longer, we risk a population explosion on a planet whose resources are already overstretched. If the vaccines merely delay the beginning of age-related conditions, they will only postpone the burden on people and society. And as Nobel prizewinner Venki Ramakrishnan told us earlier this year, a long-lived society is likely to be an unmoving one. These are familiar fears. The common answer is that the goal is increased healthspan. That means people living for longer, free from the diseases of old age, then suddenly declining and dying.
We won’t know the outcome until the therapies have been widely used, at which point it will be too late to put the genie back in the bottle. But there is really no turning back anyway. If vaccines and other anti-ageing therapies work and are affordable, they will be used. Besides, nobody would argue that innovations like antibiotics, vaccines and advanced diagnostics were a bad idea even though they marked the beginning of our era of age-related diseases. Similarly, we shouldn’t fear life-saving medical advances on the basis of unintended consequences. If we can make lives longer and less painful, the downsides are a price worth paying.
12. Why is the field of anti-ageing medicine growing rapidly?
A. The biology of ageing is better applied.
B. The trend of healthy lifestyle is rising.
C. The demand for longer life is increasing.
D. The number of elderly is rising globally.
13. How do anti-ageing vaccines benefit society?
A. By increasing the workforce.
B. By curing people of diseases.
C. By boosting economic growth.
D. By reducing healthcare expense.
14. What does the underlined phrase “put the genie back in the bottle” mean?
A. To stop the process of ageing.
B. To clean up the effect of the therapies.
C. To create a new medical breakthrough.
D. To delay the development of technology.
15. What is the best title for this article?
A. How does Anti-Ageing Medicine Really Work?
B. What Is the Risk of Anti-Ageing Medicine?
C. How Can Anti-Ageing Medicine Benefit People?
D. Is It Worthwhile Using Anti-Ageing Medicine?
A 13. D 14. B 15. D

根据第一段中“The field of anti-ageing medicine has exploded in recent years due to discoveries about the fundamental biology of ageing which are translated into experimental therapies (疗法).(近年来,由于在衰老基础生物学方面的发现被转化为了实验性疗法,抗衰老医学领域得到了迅猛发展)”可知,近年来抗衰老医学领域迅速发展是因为对衰老基本生物学的发现被转化为了实验疗法,也就是对衰老生物学有了更好的应用。故选A。
因此,“put the genie back in the bottle”在这里意思是清理这些疗法带来的影响。
根据第一段中“The field of anti-ageing medicine has exploded in recent years due to discoveries about the fundamental biology of ageing which are translated into experimental therapies (疗法).(近年来,由于在衰老基础生物学方面的发现被转化为了实验性疗法,抗衰老医学领域得到了迅猛发展)”,第二段中“The upsides of such vaccines are clear.(这类疫苗的好处是显而易见的)”以及第三段中“But as with all anti-ageing interventions, there are potential downsides too.(但与所有抗衰老干预措施一样,它也有潜在的缺点)”,结合全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了抗衰老疫苗的优点和缺点,以及人们对此的不同看法。D选项“Is It Worthwhile Using Anti-Ageing Medicine?(使用抗衰老药物值得吗?)”
Loving your own body is often easier said than done. Do you know that 70% of women between the ages of 18-30 dislike their bodies? ____16____ 45% say they are dissatisfied with their bodies too. There are countless ways you can work on body positivity, and you’ll have to find out what works for you.
Think healthier, not skinnier
When you’re making meals, or when you’re hitting the gym, don’t set your fitness goals according to a number you’d like to see on the scale. Exercise and a healthy diet shouldn’t be a punishment. ____17____ So, instead of thinking about how much your body weighs, or how it’s shaped, think about all the amazing things it can do.
Surround yourself with positivity
Negative messages about body image are all around us. According to one study, participants who spent more time on social media were more likely to develop a negative body image and eating disorders. ____18____ Look for positive people, people who practice self-love, and people who will encourage you to be who you are.
Focus on the things you like about yourself
Every time a negative thought about your body pops into your mind, counter it with something positive. Try making lists of the things you like about your body. And not just how it looks, but the things it allows you to do. ____19____ We naturally tend to look for our dissatisfactions and overlook the good things. To break out of that way of thinking, it will take daily repetition. Just keep at it.
Stop comparing yourself to others
____20____ One person is beautiful in one way, and the next person in some other way. And isn’t that how it should be? Imagine how boring it would be if there were only one way to be, and to feel, beautiful. Comparing yourself to others can leave you feeling like you don’t look the way you should, but you’re not supposed to look like someone else; you’re supposed to look like you.
A. List it all out.
B. Pick up a new hobby.
C. And men aren’t much better off.
D. People come in all shapes and sizes.
E. So try to cut out the negativity that you can.
F. Often we project our own insecurities onto others.
G. It is one way we show respect and appreciation for our bodies.
C 17. G 18. E 19. A 20. D

根据上文“Do you know that 70% of women between the ages of 18-30 dislike their bodies?”(你知道吗,在18-30岁的女性中,有70%的人不喜欢自己的身材?)以及下文“45% say they are dissatisfied with their bodies too.”(45%说他们也对自己的身材不满意。)
根据上文“When you’re making meals, or when you’re hitting the gym, don’t set your fitness goals according to a number you’d like to see on the scale. Exercise and a healthy diet shouldn’t be a punishment.”(当你做饭的时候,或者当你去健身房的时候,不要根据你想在体重秤上看到的数字来设定你的健身目标。
上文“According to one study, participants who spent more time on social media were more likely to develop a negative body image and eating disorders.”(根据一项研究,在社交媒体上花费更多时间的参与者更有可能产生负面的身体形象和饮食失调)指出社交媒体上花费更多时间会对自己产生负面影响;E选项“所以,尽量消除消极影响。”与上文为因果关系;下文“Look for positive people, people who practice self-love, and people who will encourage you to be who you are.”(寻找积极向上的人,那些爱自己的人,那些鼓励你做自己的人)承接E选项,阐述消除消极情绪的方法。
根据上文“Try making lists of the things you like about your body. And not just how it looks, but the things it allows you to do.”(试着列出你喜欢自己身体的地方。 故选A项。
根据上文“Stop comparing yourself to others”(不要拿自己和别人比较)以及下文“One person is beautiful in one way, and the next person in some other way.”(一个人在某一方面很美,另一个人在另一方面很美。)

A By increasing the workforce.
D Is It Worthwhile Using Anti-Ageing Medicine?
