The sportswear company closed all of its offices worldwide for a week to give its employees additional time to rest and recover. All office workers had the option to take time off that week ahead of a planned return to the office.
The week off came during a significant worker shortage across the U. S. and those looking for work were asking employers what benefits and extras they could provide. In order to attract and retain workers, employers were giving out signing bonuses, health insurance, retirement plans and some are even helping workers with tuition costs for college.
The move seemed to have worked as Nike employees spoke highly of it. Liz Tippett, an associate professor at the University of Oregon School of Law whose work emphasizes employment law and practices, told Oregon Live the move was beneficial for the company.
“I like raising the focus of mental health as a basis for people to take their time off, not just when they’re physically ill,” Tippett said. “I think it’s important to recognize the role mental health plays for workers and workers’ well-being.”
Although Nike closed its corporate offices, its retail stores were still open and those workers were still putting in hours. Tippett said the fact that retail stores were still open showed which employees Nike valued and was willing to invest in.
Nike isn’t the only company giving workers more time off. According to a Challenger, Gray & Christmas survey, Linkedin, Bumble, Mozilla and others have offered week-long paid breaks to improve mental health and energy. When tennis star Naomi Osaka dropped out of the French Open citing mental health issues, Nike stood by and supported her decision. “Our thoughts are with Naomi. We support her and recognize her courage in sharing her own mental health experience,” Nike said in a statement at that time.

Regina Betz of University HospitalBonn in Germany and her team linked three genes to a rare disease with eye-catching symptoms: silvery, shiny hair that just will not lie flat. Patients, who suffer from Uncombable Hair Syndrome (蓬发综合征), can have dry, shiny hair that stands away from the skin like a cloud of dandelion fluff. Only about 100cases had ever been recorded.
But after the study, which looked at 18 cases, people from all over the world began to contact the team. “They said, ‘Oh, I have a child like this’ or, ‘Oh, I looked exactly like that as a child, ‘” said study co-author Buket Basmanav, a geneticist also at University Hospital Bonn. “And Regina said, ‘Send us your samples.’” Now, the team has analyzed DNA samples from 107 people with Uncombable Hair Syndrome. Variants of just a single gene accounted for 71 percent of the cases, the researchers reported in JAMA Dermatology.
The gene, PADI3, encodes an enzyme (酶) involved in hair formation. Changes in PADI3 can disrupt the process, affecting the hair’s structure. “People with the syndrome have the hair like a paper straw that has collapsed in on itself,” says Gillian Westgate, a hair biologist at the University of Bradford in England who was not involved in the study. Basmanav and her colleagues also linked nearly 4 percent of the cases to variants of TGM3 or TCHH, the two other hair genes that the team had previously studied. Nearly a quarter of the cases in the new study remain genetically unexplained.
The work could help doctors diagnose the disorder, which often improves with age and isn’t typically tied to health problems, Westgate said.
8. What can be learned about the disease from the first paragraph?
A. It mainly appears in Europe. B. It was rarely recorded.
C. It is easy to cure completely. D. It makes the hair shiny and straight.
9. What do the researchers find according to the text?
A. A quarter of the cases are due to a gene called PADI3.
B. There are exactly 107 cases of the disease globally.
C. Once getting the disease, a patient’s hair often lies flat.
D Some genes are linked to Uncombable Hair Syndrome.
10. How may parents who have children with the syndrome feel after reading the text?
A. Relieved. B. Confused. C. Proud. D. Embarrassed.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. A rare disease can be cured soon.
B. Scientists will research on hair problems.
C. Genetic variation may be to blame for kids’ uncombable hair.
D. People will never give in to uncombable hair.
D
When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every mile and push myself to race for personal bests. But as I ran for amusement as an adult instead of running for sport, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that came with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced the watch battery, and that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.
This is the idea of unplugged running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout—or at least your stress levels and enjoyment of running.
“People used to have an interest in their sport and got enjoyment out of the sport, but now that’s switching to the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. “They will compare themselves to people who are better than them or who run faster or longer which will make them feel bad ultimately.”
Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smartwatches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workouts if the batteries on their tracking devices are dead.
In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just casual joggers or weekend warriors. Steve Jones set a world record at the 1984 Chicago Marathon without wearing a watch. Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch. He stopped tracking his pace years ago and only trains based on his effort and his overall running time. Getting rid of the pace tracking on his watch, as well as switching off other technology while running, has helped him get more in tune with his body.
“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,” Hofbauer said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”
12. What happened to the author when his running watch didn’t work?
A. He lost the desire to keep running every day.
B. He experienced running as a really fun activity.
C. He had great difficulty achieving his fitness goals.
D. He was at a loss about how to replace the watch battery.
13. What does Eoin Whelan think of fitness tracking watches?
A. They can lead to harmful results.
B. The way people use them is not proper.
C. The data provided by them is not correct.
D. They can help enrich the wearers’ social life.
14. How does the author explain the positive effects of running watch-free in paragraph 5?
A. By making comparison. B. By presenting results.
C. By providing details. D. By giving examples.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Enjoy the Sports without a Running Watch
B. Unplugged Running Actually Has Two Sides
C. The Running Watch Is Gaining More Popularity
D. A Running Watch Can Slow Down Your Running Speed

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was sitting in the living room with my pet dog Toby, when there were urgent knocks on the front door. Who could that be? I wondered. It was late, and there was a heavy downpour outside. I opened the door. There stood a man in a uniform. “You need to evacuate!” he insisted. “The whole area is flooding.”
I was given 20 minutes to pack before Toby and I were driven to a nearby church being used as a refuge, where hundreds of other locals had gathered. My mind went to my son, Sunil. He’d moved in with me a few years earlier. Tragically, he was diagnosed with bone cancer. He was in hospital in Lismore at that moment, with only weeks to live. And the bad news didn’t stop there...
“Your dog has to go to a rescue centre,” a volunteer said. “Pets weren’t allowed in the temporary accommodation.” Toby had been my best friend for 13 years, so saying goodbye to him broke my heart.
After four days, the water fell enough for me to inspect my house. Mud lined the walls where the water had risen to the ceiling and destroyed all my belongings. It seemed that my house was beyond repair. I felt so sad as I struggled through the mess.
Fortunately, three days later, the roads out of our area were reopened, and I could visit Sunil. I stayed by Sunil’s side that whole week until he sadly breathed his last breath. I lost my house, dog, and only child within two weeks, leaving my world in darkness.
A month later, I was sitting alone at the community hub when one of the volunteers, Lynne, approached me, accompanied by a young gentleman. “This is Myles,” Lynne said. “He might be able to help you repair your house.” Hearing this, I was really too excited to say anything.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

Soon after, Myles brought many tools to my backyard, where he set to work. In the meantime, I was moved to Rainforest Resort in Byron Bay, where the owner kindly allowed me to keep a dog. Slowly, light was coming back into my life. Each week, Myles would send me photos of his progress. He cleaned up the mess and refurbished every room with his mate Shem and 40 volunteers from our hometown church.
In July this year, after six months, I finally came home. My house took on an entirely new look. “How beautiful!” I marvelled. The team had even installed a new kitchen and laundry, far nicer than my previous house. “I cannot thank you enough,” I said excitedly. I saw Myles regularly when he came to do the finishing touches, and we’ve developed a great friendship. “You’re like a son to me,” I told him one day. He’s shown me that beautiful people can be found even in the darkest times.
