NEW POST
I can’t control my big mouth and I cannot keep secrets that my friends tell me. At school, I often talk loudly a lot in class. I have made myself look bad. I want to change this. What should I do?
REPLIES
It’s OK. Some people just naturally love to talk. However, when your talking starts to make other people unhappy, it’s time to take a look at your habits. First of all, when you tell your friends’ secrets to others, this makes it hard for your friends to trust you.
Good friends are trustworthy and never tell secrets to other people. Think about how you would feel if one of your friends revealed your secret. If you always remember this, you won’t give away any secrets.
As for talking loudly in class, if you do it too much, your teacher will probably punish you. That should remind you to stop doing it so much.
I had two best friends named Jim and Peter. They had a fight over a basketball match, so Jim came to me and complained about how Peter didn’t pass the ball to him. Days later, they got over it. But one day, when we were on our way home from school, I made a slip of the tongue and mentioned this to Peter. His smile disappeared and he walked away. Jim also was angry with me because he thought I betrayed (背叛) him.
What’s worse, some other students also heard the gossip and started to ignore me. It was really painful. There was nothing I could do but sincerely apologize to them. I decided to keep a low profile (行事低调) and try not to give away any more secrets.
Anyone can make a slip of the tongue. But we need to think carefully before we act. It can hurt people and cause us to lose friends.
26. What is Steven’s problem?
A. He is made fun of for his bad looks. B. He is worried about his bad habits.
C. He can’t control his anger at school. D. He has been told too many secrets.
27. To better keep secrets, Mike advised Steven to ________.
A. put himself in others’ shoes B. tell his secrets to his friends
C. think about the punishment D. talk less loudly in the classroom
28. Why did Zhao Qijun talk about his own experience?
A. To guide every reader to believe his story.
B. To tell Steven how he betrayed his friend Jim.
C. To make Steven accept his advice more easily.
D. To explain why he decided to keep a low profile.

Cleaning up the table, I caught sight of small round plastic pieces. I discovered they were the tops or covers of color markers I had kept on the table. The only difference was that someone got those covers and chewed (咀嚼) them into shapelessness. On another part of the table, I saw the color markers dried up without covers. I was almost sure I knew who had done it and I could not understand the reasons behind his actions.
As I considered my discovery, my annoyance and anger gradually went away when I remembered that as a child, I did several strange things that must have made my mother mad. I cut our shoes, I chewed pens and pencils, and I wrote and drew pictures on walls and destroyed many things at home. The mind of a child is curious with the spirit of exploration, seeking to understand and test the limits (限制) of many things. Of course, it can be costly, but what is growing up if no mistakes are made?
We call it paying the school fees of life. If a child plays with a hot iron and it burns them it is a given that they will not go near the iron again. Sometimes I watch the children in my neighborhood playing dangerous games. Sometimes I tell them not to do it, but sometimes I let it pass. Children may not want to be told to stop riding as fast as they want until someone has fallen off their bike. A child will not listen when parents ask them to get down from the tree until he has fallen down. However, wisdom shows that if the behavior is deadly, you should stop it in time.
Creativity is valuable. And this is why we should encourage children to remain creative rather than just receive everything they have known and seen. Allow children to make mistakes, but this must be followed with supervision (监督), monitoring, and correction.
29. What happened to the author’s color markers?
A. They were stolen. B. They were destroyed.
C. They were thrown away. D. They were cleaned by mistake.
30. How did the writer feel when she thought of her childhood?
A. She got very regretful. B. She calmed down.
C. She was very angry with herself. D. She was very happy.
31. What does the author mainly want to show in Paragraph 3?
A. Children can learn from their mistakes. B. Mistakes are unavoidable for children.
C. Children often put themselves in danger. D. Children must not be allowed to make any mistakes.
32. What is the best title?
A. Children should be creative. B. Grow up through mistakes.
C. What happened to my color markers? D. Why do children make mistakes?
C
Over the past few decades, children have been taking part less in free play and more in organized sports. While participation (参与) in organized sports has both social and physical benefits (益处) for young children, concerns about safety and benefits increase as participants get younger.
Though most children are naturally likely to be physically active, not all kids are willing to get up and move. Soccer coach Joseph Luxbacher says, “Every kid has the potential (潜能) to be a good sportsman in different kinds of sports. Taking part in organized sports such as the school soccer team introduces direction to children’s physical activities. Following a team schedule gives kids a set time and place to exercise. As a result, kids can be safe from accidents and be protected against hurt.”
What’s more, taking part in organized sports gives children time to communicate with others and showing good sportsmanship. For young children who may still be very self-centerd, taking part in team sports teaches them to think about the group and encourages them to be happy about the success of their teammates. Kids can also benefit from spending time with their coach and having a chance to develop a positive relationship with an adult other than their parents, especially if the coach is both skilled and devoted to being a positive mentor (导师).
Playing organized sports requires a lot of time for practice and games, so it would seem that this could influence students’ study. However, it can ameliorate students’ test performance. That’s because to play organized sports well, players have to memorize information, do repetitive actions, and learn from teammates. All these types of learning skills can make students score higher.
Though it can come from many different sources—parents, coaches, teammates or themselves—many children who take part in organized sports feel pressured to succeed. While a little stress can be helpful in leading children to perform with increased focus and strength, too much stress will leave young kids feeling very tired. Organized sports are more likely to put the right amount of pressure on them.
33. What do Joseph Luxbacher’s words show?
A. Organized sports can achieve kids’ potential.
B. Most children prefer free play to organized sports.
C. Organized sports can better protect kids from getting hurt.
D. Most children have a set time and place to exercise.
34. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Kids can make wise decisions by playing organized sports.
B. Kids can meet better coaches by playing organized sports.
C. Kids can learn social skills by playing organized sports.
D. Kids can better communicate with parents by playing organized sports.
35. What does the underlined word “ameliorate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Decrease. B. Record. C. Recognize. D. Improve.
36. Where is the article probably from?
A. A soccer coach’s diary. B. Sports magazine. C. English textbook. D. A football club poster.
D
When she was 14 years old, Amy’s life was turned upside down by a family trouble.
Amy lived in a small village in India. Her mother fell ill and her father had to spend his time caring for her. As a result, she had to do most of the housework—including washing clothes. What’s worse, her family couldn’t afford an electric washing machine. Instead, she had to do the washing all by hand in the local river, and then carefully carry everything back to her home—a task that took several hours.
Interested in engineering, Amy wanted to make a washing machine which could be used without electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they worked. Amy then designed a machine with bicycle pedals(踏板) and chain. To get those, she went to a local shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts, they also helped her make the machine!
Here’s how the machine works: Amy used a cylinder(圆筒) to hold the clothes and put it in a cube(立方体). Next she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Amy pushed the pedals with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular washing machine.
Amy’s invention worked! She had created her own human-powered washing machine—and now a task that used to take several hours took only 30 minutes. Amy’s washing machine was chosen as India’s best invention! And the story of this young woman’s creative invention spread around the world.
“Amy’s invention saves time and money for the world’s poor,” said Jeanine Thomas of the Borden Project, “she made a difference.”
37. What problem did Amy try to solve?
A. Her mother suffered from illness.
B. Her family was too poor to afford her education.
C. It was a long way to get water from the river.
D. It took too much time and effort to wash clothes.
38. How did Amy solve the problem?
A. designing→studying→getting materials→making the machine
B. designing→getting materials→studying→making the machine
C. studying→getting materials→designing→making the machine
D. studying→designing→getting materials→making the machine
39. How does the machine get powered?
A. By turning the cylinder around with hands. B. By pulling the chain with machines.
C. By pushing the pedals with legs. D. By turning on the machine with electricity.
40. What does the underlined phrase “made a difference” mean here?
A. Amy changed the way a washing machine works.
B. Amy won a big prize and improved her family's life.
C. Amy improved many poor people’s lives with her creativity.
D. Amy encouraged many young inventors among the poor.

NEW POST
I can’t control my big mouth and I cannot keep secrets that my friends tell me. At school I often talk loudly a lot in class.

If a child plays with a hot iron and it burns them, it is a given that they will not go near the iron again.

C. She was very angry with herself. D. She was very happy.

A. Children can learn from their mistakes. B. Mistakes are unavoidable for children.

What’s more taking part in organized sports gives children time to communicate with others and showing good sportsmanship.
Though it can come from many different sources—parents coaches, teammates or themselves—many children who take part in organized sports feel pressured to succeed.

Next, she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder.
