Old Town, New Feel
With cobblestone (鹅卵石) streets, the Old Town Alexandria’s historic district is growing to present new ways to connect with the past while preparing for the future. As it approaches its 275th yearly celebration, you’re welcome!
Where to Stay
First opened as the George Mason Hotel in 1926, Hotel Heron is among the many businesses looking to start fresh in a familiar space. Opening in June of this year, the hotel covers a vast land area and has 134 rooms, event and meeting spaces, a great restaurant and a rooftop bar. Walk from the retail (零售) center on King Street to Waterfront Park, a green space with trails. The self-guided African American Waterfront Heritage Trail was built in 2023 to tell the stories of Africans and their future generations who lived and worked in the area. On show at Waterfront Park, the public art installation (装置) “Interstellar Influencer” uses metal, water and light in a description of a small planet that hit earth nearly 35 million years ago.
If you can’t get enough of the water, go on a tour along the Potomac River. You can enjoy views of Washington’s skyline and monuments.
Where to Eat
You can eat at Virtue Feed & Grain which opened in the 1800s, located on the waterfront in a former feed house. Other spots don’t need to work as hard for a local feel. Sidney Keys14-year-old, has started a youth-led book club program, with the support and help of his mom, to help empower both himself and many other boys with mental or physical problems through literature.
Keys’ idea to create Books N Bros was born from his own setbacks and struggles. “I used to have a really bad stutter and perform badly in school and I would get laughed at for it,” Sidney Keys, the founder of the book club Books N Bros said. “Reading was kind of my escape from my stutter because in my head I was able to imagine things and play out all the events clearly.” He said, “I wanted to start up Books N Bros so that I could talk to other people, especially boys, about books I love in a relaxing way because it’s like a brotherhood.”
The reading club that he started at just 10 years old now has over 250“bros”aged 7 to 13 from the U.S. and Canada, most of whom are changing actively and positively. Marvel’s Hero Project, which reveals the remarkable, positive change young men make in their communities across the country and turns them into superheroes, selected Keys to be featured in the Disney series.
“I always wanted to read books that had characters that looked like me, but now I see a comic book with me in it,” Keys said delightedly. “It’s really awesome, especially when I hear my friends and teachers call me my superhero name at school.”
As for the future of Books N Bros, Keys and his mom hope to expand the programs reach throughout the country. “Getting Books N Bros in schools across America, we don’t want transportation to be an issue for getting that physical brotherhood and bond. It just benefits so many people, and it keeps me going,” Keys explained.
24. What caused Sidney Keys to build Books N Bros?
A. His mother’s support.
B. His poor school performance.
C. His own sufferings.
D. His literature experience.
25. Why was Keys chosen by Marvel’s Hero Project?
A. Because he was called a superhero by people.
B. Because he made a difference to other people.
C. Because he was brave to face his shortcomings.
D. Because he looked like a role in the Disney series.
26. How did Keys feel when seeing himself in a comic book?
A. Confused. B. Curious.
C. Touched. D. Proud.
27. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Sidney Keys: a Real-life Superhero
B. Books N Bros: Home to Young Boys
C. Sidney Keys: a Loyal Book Lover
D. Books N Bros: a Hit Across America

Scientists have long wondered how baleen whales can sing while holding their breath Experts already knew that baleen whales have a special larynx (喉) that enables them to sing. But they didn’t know exactly how they produced sound.
“You can’t just go down a baleen whale and see what they’re doing when they’re singing,” jokingly says Joy Reidenberg, a professor who studies whales. Above all, dead whales are usually destroyed by natural chemical processes too quickly to collect living tissue samples.
Three young whales which happened to approach the shore close to his lab enabled lead author Coen Elenans to simulate (模拟) what happens when the animals produce sound. They'd assumed that the inner edges of the whales’ vocal cords (声带) rub together to make sound, but the experiment revealed the vocal cords rub against a fat part at the back of the larynx.
Reidenberg thinks the sample size of the study just three animals is too small for such a generalization, and that scientists need to examine more samples, Heidi Pearson, professor of marine biology at University of Alaska Southeast, agrees, She’d like to see a different family of whales examined for comparison, as the three individuals studied were all young whales.
Elemans says he wants to study adult males, which are known for their singing. But the experts acknowledge the challenge in doing so, “Just getting those samples is n great achievement in its own right,” says Pearson.
The researchers did another study. They used 3-D computer simulations to recreate what happens when the whales’ larynx muscles are activated. They discovered these structures cannot produce sound at higher frequencies than 300 hertz (Hz), or below depths of about 330 feet.
“Unfortunately, that depth and frequency range overlap (重叠) almost perfectly with what humans make,” says Elemans, meaning they may struggle to compete with noise generated by ships, which send out sounds between 30 and 300 Hz.
“That’s why the study emphasizes an urgent need to decrease noise pollution by limiting shipping traffic, setting up slow zones, protecting areas with lots of vocalizing whales, making ships quieter,” says Reidenberg, “and using real-time data in conservation plans.”
28. What is the challenge of studying how baleen whales produce sound?
A. Dealing with dead whales’ tissues. B. Getting suitable samples for study.
C. Simulating the whales’ vocal cords. D. Analyzing 3-D computer simulations.
29. What is Heidi Pearson’s attitude towards the first study?
A. Doubtful. B. Admiring. C. Unclear. D. Optimistic.
30. What can we infer from the second study?
A. Ships on the sea frequently run into baleen whales.
B. Baleen whales enjoy competing with mankind on sound.
C. Baleen whales’ vocal cords rub together to make sound.
D. Human-made sounds affect baleen whales’ producing sound.
31. What does Joy Reidenberg suggest doing at last?
A. Ships are supposed to make way for vocalizing whales.
B. More data should be collected to analyze noise pollution.
C. Making plans to do further search on baleen whales’ habitat.
D. Taking measures to cut noise pollution for whale conservation.

Western wellness influencers suggest that sleeping on the floor could help lessen lower back pain. But is there evidence to support the accolade given to floor sleeping? It turns out that resting on the floor may offer advantages for certain people in certain conditions. Some medical experts say that lying flat on your back with your arms and legs extending out takes pressure off the back and can stretch it out. Cooler temperatures near the floor may improve sleep quality and overall comfort.
“But most experts today agree that sleeping on the floor isn’t necessarily the best option for any type of back discomfort,” says Peter G. Whang, a professor at the Yale School of Medicine. “The floor is board-straight, while our spine (脊柱) has physiologic curves (生理性弯曲).” One such curve leaves space between the lower back and the floor. Lacking support, this curve flattens out over time, which can result in back pain. Moreover, without cushioning (缓冲) to support the shoulders, the upper back is often supported too high, which can cause joint rigidity (僵硬). Worse still, a hard floor create s pressure points in places like your hips and heels, which can restrict blood flow to those areas and potentially damage soft tissue.
So how did our ancestors maintain healthy backs while dreaming on the dirt for thousands of years? According to Daniel Lieberman, a Harvard University professor, hunter-gatherers slept on the ground from early childhood and may have built up a tolerance to its ill effects, unlike present-day people who try it for the first time as adults. Also ancient people got more physical activity throughout the day, which may have helped prevent pain despite ground sleeping.
So, if your back is giving you nightmares, the real solution could be replacing your worn-out mattress (床垫) instead of sleeping on the floor. The average American’s bed is 10 years old, equal to about three years of sleep time. “No furniture will sustain that type of weight and abuse,” says Bert Jacobson, a kinesiology professor at Oklahoma State University, whose research suggests that a new, firmer mattress reduced back pain by 47% — 63%.
32. What does the underlined word “accolade” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Credit. B. Complaint. C. Inspiration. D. Debate.
33. What helped our ancestors adapt to sleeping on the ground?
A. Their shapes. B. Their fitness.
C. Their lifestyle. D. Their living conditions.
34. Why does the author mention Bert Jacobson in the last paragraph?
A. To come up with a new topic. B. To present a significant finding.
C. To recommend the use of mattresses. D. To make the author’s advice convincing.
35. How is the text mainly organized?
A. By analyzing features of sleep. B. By comparing different opinions.
C. By making a list of relevant findings. D. By citing science-backed viewpoints.

Looking at myself in the mirror, I felt confused by the fish-like costume my mom had made. She kept saying she followed the pattern exactly, but something didn’t seem right. Somehow, she convinced me to join a summer play, and I was going to be the Fish Footman in a local production of Alice in Wonderland. This thought didn’t help my confidence at all.
As the opening night approached, anxiety tightened in my stomach. The costume felt silly, and I worried about being the center of attention. Mom, feeling my unease, wrapped me in a big hug and reminded me of all the hard work I had put into rehearsals(排练) over the past two months. Despite her encouragement, doubt remained.
On performance day, I felt extremely nervous. What if I forgot my lines? Mom took me backstage where other kids in colorful costumes were chatting happily. I felt small and out of place as she led me to the makeup table. A moment later, I saw my reflection with green cheeks and bright blue lips. Panic hit me: how could I go on stage looking like this?
But Mom reassured(安抚) me that everyone else also wore strange costumes. With no way to escape, I sat alone as the play began. The unclear figures onstage made me nervous, and laughter from the audience sounded far away— ironic for someone playing a fish.
As the stage manager signaled on the other side of the stage for my entrance, I knew it’s my show time and I knew I should hug this experience fully.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Last week, our school held the 2nd Chinese Cultural Festival in the auditorium, which turned out to be a great success.
The festival featured various cultural activities. To begin with, students demonstrated Chinese calligraphy and paper-cutting skills at different booths, allowing them to experience the charm of traditional art. Visitors also had the opportunity to try on traditional Chinese costumes and enjoy tea ceremony demonstrations. The highlight was a spectacular performance including Chinese folk dance, martial arts, and traditional musical instruments.
The event not only helped students better understand and inherit Chinese traditional culture, but also enhanced their cultural self-confidence and national pride.
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】 Before I stepped onto the stage my heart raced. I look at myself in the mirror and I feel stupid, how can I play such a character? I can feel the audience laughing at me, they will say, “what a funny character, this fish is so foolish.” I can't even imagine what I look like. But then I thought, since I can’t change anything, I should accept the challenge and present the best version of myself to the audience.
Once on stage, everything started to go smoothly. In front of the audience, I was very confident, and the performance of this fish amazed the audience, leaving them a deep impression. The audience applauded loudly. I really became the center of attention. At that time I was so excited and happy, I conquered myself and was no longer afraid of anything. I also learned that everyone plays an important role in life. Being yourself is the most important thing.
