At first, I thought this was very good, but then I found out that he only did this because he could not afford to pay for lunch. I did not want to upset him by telling him what I learned, so I brought extra food with me every day and told him that my wife always packed me too much lunch because she was a chef at a restaurant and got food very cheap. He took the extra food, and ate lunch with me even though he seemed embarrassed. Years later, I received a letter from Tom and it was full of thanks. He became a doctor and now travels to poor hospitals around the world to help those in need.

When Wilson was 10 years old, he promised his mother that one day she would never again have to wash other people’s clothes for a living and he was going to start his own business and support her. His mother just nodded silently, knowing no member of their family had ever owned a business.
Years passed, but Wilson’s dream did not. After high school, Wilson joined the army, where his goal of one day owning a family restaurant began to take shape. He signed up for the food service school there and he became such an excellent cook that he was promoted to the officers’ dining hall.
After he left the army at 28, he worked as a police officer for the following fifteen years. When he felt he was in need of the business skills for his business, he took business classes at night in his off-hours. “I also saved every cent I earned as a police officer,” he recalled. “For ten years, I didn’t spend one cent — there were no movies, no vacations, and no trips.”
By 2013, with enough savings, Wilson decided to make his dream a reality. He opened his first restaurant. However, the first few months were a failure. Wilson quickly change his business strategy and once a week he offered his employees (雇员) classes in customer service and management. He encouraged them to develop personal and professional goals. Today, Wilson owns nine restaurants and employs over four hundred people. In the community, Wilson funded athletic teams and scholarships (奖学金) to get kids off the streets and into community centers and schools. February 9, Sunday of 2025, was not a holiday in the US, but it might seem like one to Americans. Many were attending parties to watch Super Bowl LIX of this year. The Super Bowl is the championship game of professional American football held by the National Football League (联赛), or NFL, which has 32 teams mainly based in large cities across the US.
The first professional league was formed in 1920,when players of four teams met in Canton, Ohio. The group first called itself the American Professional Football Association but changed the name two years later to the National Football League.
In 1960, a Texas businessman pushed the effort to create the American Football League, or AFL. The two leagues competed with each other to sign top football players from universities around the country.
In 1965, established NFL players began negotiating (谈判) to play for the competing league, AFL. So, officials of the two leagues decided to work together. This agreement established a championship game between the two leagues. It was officially called the AFLNFL World Championship Game but became known as the Super Bowl.
The first Super Bowl was played in 1967 in Los Angeles, California. The Green Bay Packers defeated (战胜) the Kansas City Chiefs. It was far from an exciting game. Many of the seats in the sports center were vacant. That changed with the Super Bowl played two years later. Experts say the public finally accepted the new league when the New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts.
After that game in 1969, officials of the two leagues decided to create a new National Football League. They divided the teams into two competing conferences (体育协会), the American Conference, or AFC, and the National Conference, NFC. Each year, the conference champions play in the Super Bowl.
Today, the Super Bowl is a major sporting event, attracting tens of thousands of people around the globe.
28. Why was February 9, Sunday of 2025 important for many Americans?
A. It was a national holiday.
B. It was the day of the Super Bowl.
C. It marked the start of the NFL season.
D. It was the date of the NFL’s founding.
29. What led to the creation of the Super Bowl?
A. The competition between NFL and AFL for top players.
B. The wish for making new rules for championship game.
C. The need to attract fans to professional football games.
D. The decision to join the NFL and AFL into one league.
30. What does the underlined word “vacant” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Taken. B. Booked. C. Empty. D. Adaptable.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How the Super Bowl Became a Big Deal
B. The Rise of Professional Football in the US
C How the NFL and AFL Changed Sports Forever
D. The Development of American Football Leagues
B 29. D 30. C 31. A

由文章第一段“February 9, Sunday of 2025, was not a holiday in the US, but it might seem like one to Americans. Many were attending parties to watch Super Bowl LIX of this year. (2025年2月9日,星期日,这一天在美国不是节假日,但对美国人来说可能感觉像是个节日。许多人都在参加聚会,观看今年的第59届Super Bowl LIX。)”可知,2月9日对许多美国人来说很重要是因为这一天是Super Bowl的日子。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第四段“In 1965, established NFL players began negotiating (谈判) to play for the competing league, AFL. So, officials of the two leagues decided to work together. This agreement established a championship game between the two leagues. It was officially called the AFLNFL World Championship Game but became known as the Super Bowl. (1965年,已在NFL效力的球员开始谈判,想要为与之竞争的美国AFL效力。于是,这两个联盟的官员决定合作。这项协议确立了两个联盟之间的冠军赛。它的正式名称是AFLNFL World Championship Game,但后来被人们称为Super Bowl。)”可知,所以NFL和AFL合并为一个联赛的决定导致了超级碗的创立。故选D。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第五段“It was far from an exciting game. Many of the seats in the sports center were vacant. That changed with the Super Bowl played two years later. Experts say the public finally accepted the new league when the New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts.
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“February 9, Sunday of 2025, was not a holiday in the US, but it might seem like one to Americans. Many were attending parties to watch Super Bowl LIX of this year. (2025 年2月9日,星期日,这一天在美国不是节假日,但对美国人来说可能感觉像是个节日。许多人都在参加聚会,观看今年的第59届超级碗比赛。)”可知,文章主要讲述了Super Bowl的诞生和发展历程,最后提到如今Super Bowl已经成为一项重要的体育赛事,吸引着全球成千上万的人。由此可知,A选项“How the Super Bowl Became a Big Deal (Super Bowl是如何成为一件大事的)”最符合文章标题。故选A。
D
Scientists working in southwest England have found the earliest fossilized (变成化石的) forest known on the Earth, according to a new study. Dating back 390 million years, the fossils break the record held by a forest in New York state by 4million years.
The fossilized trees, known as Calamophyton, look fairly similar to palm trees but had thin bodies. They didn’t have any leaves, but had twig-like (嫩枝样的) structures covering their branches (树枝). They would reach up to 2-4 meters tall and drop branches as they grew. The forest dates from 419 million to 358 million years ago, when life was moving onto land. The trees would have trapped sediment (沉积物) in their root systems, which helped hold riverbanks and coastlines in place.
The findings also uncovered the speed at which early forests developed. While the fossils in England are from a forest with just one type of tree, the previous oldest forest in New York state had more variety of species, such as vine-like trees that grew on the ground, despite living just 4 million years later. “Almost overnight, geologically speaking, you’ve got a lot more variety,” the first author Neil Davies said.
The trees also provided a habitat for invertebrates (无脊椎动物) thanks to the twigs that would drop on the ground. The team found evidence of footprints and tail drags left by these early animals while scientists don’t know exactly what they were for a shortage of physical remains.
“The most exciting discovery comes from seeing, for the first time, these trees in the positions where they grew,” study co-author Christopher Berry said. “It is our first opportunity to look directly at the ecology of this earliest type of forest, to know the environment in which Calamophyton trees were growing, and to find out their effect on the sedimentary system.”
32. What do we know about Calamophyton?
A. They appeared four million years ago.
B. They moved onto land from the ocean.
C. They made up the oldest forests on our planet.
D. They formed the oldest fossilized forest known to us.
33. What does Neil Davies want to tell us?
A. The early forests developed at a rapid rate.
B. The forest in New York had a slow growth process.
C. The former discovered forest has one type of tree.
D. Four million years is a short time in geological history.
34. How did the invertebrates live in the Calamophyton forest?
A. They lived on the trees.
B. They lived on the forest floor.
C. They fed on the twigs of the trees.
D. They pulled their tails looking for food.
35. What does Christopher Berry think of the discovery of the Calamophyton?
A. Effortless. B. Incomplete. C. Meaningful. D. Unclear.
D 33. A 34. B 35. C

根据第一段“Scientists working in southwest England have found the earliest fossilized (变成化石的) forest known on the Earth, according to a new study. Dating back 390 million years, the fossils break the record held by a forest in New York state by 4 million years. (根据一项新的研究,在英格兰西南部工作的科学家发现了地球上已知最早的化石森林。这些化石可以追溯到3.9亿年前,比纽约州的一片森林保持的记录早了400万年)”和第二段中“The fossilized trees, known as Calamophyton, look fairly similar to palm trees but had thin bodies.(这些被称为Calamophyton的化石树,看起来与棕榈树非常相似,但树干很薄)”可知,Calamophyton形成了我们已知的最古老的化石森林。
根据第三段中“The findings also uncovered the speed at which early forests developed. While the fossils in England are from a forest with just one type of tree, the previous oldest forest in New York state had more variety of species, such as vine like trees that grew on the ground, despite living just 4 million years later. ‘Almost overnight, geologically speaking, you’ve got a lot more variety,’ the first author Neil Davies said.(这些发现还揭示了早期森林发展的速度。英格兰的化石来自一个只有一种树木的森林,而纽约州之前最古老的森林有更多的物种,比如生长在地面上的藤本植物,尽管它们只生活在400万年之后。“几乎在一夜之间,从地质学的角度来说,你有了更多的种类,”第一作者Neil Davies说)”可知,Neil Davies想要说的是,从地质学的角度来看,很多种类的植物是一夜之间就出现的,说明早期森林发展速度很快。故选A项。
根据第四段中“The trees also provided a habitat for invertebrates (无脊椎动物) thanks to the twigs that would drop on the ground. The team found evidence of footprints and tail drags left by these early animals(由于树枝会掉落在地上,这些树木也为无脊椎动物提供了栖息地。研究小组发现了这些早期动物留下的脚印和拖尾的痕迹)”可知,无脊椎动物生活在森林地面上。故选B项。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Chloe Benton was II years old, her mother took her to move in with John Roy Hennigan, who would become her stepfather. Chloe was resistant (抵抗的) to the idea of having a new father figure in her life and she felt guarded. The memories of her biological father were still fresh, and she wasn’t ready to let someone else take his place.
In the beginning, Chloe made it clear that she wanted nothing to do with John. She would often retreat (退去) to her room, avoiding any interaction with him. Whenever John tried to engage her in conversation or invite her to join in family activities, Chloe would respond with curt (简短而失礼的) answers or simply ignore him. She felt like an outsider in her own home, and the changes were unacceptable for her.
John, however, was determined to build a relationship with Chloe. He understood that trust couldn’t be forced and that it would take time for Chloe to feel comfortable around him. He decided to take a patient and gentle approach, showing her that he was there to support her, not replace her father.
Over the next few months, John tried to find small ways to connect with Chloe. He noticed her love for painting and bought her a set of high-quality paints and brushes. He attended her school events, cheering her on from the sidelines. He even started learning about her favorite hobbies so he could have meaningful conversations with her.
One rainy afternoon, Chloe was feeling particularly down. She missed her father and the life they used to have. John found her sitting by the window, staring out at the rain. He sat down next to her and shared a story about his own childhood, how he had faced similar feelings of loss and how he had learned to deal with them. His sincerity (真诚) and honesty touched Chloe, and for the first time, she felt a genuine connection with him.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One evening, John noticed that Chloe was struggling with her math homework. He knocked softly on her door and asked if she needed any help. Chloe hesitated but eventually agreed. John sat down with her and patiently explained the concepts she was having trouble with. To Chloe’s surprise, he was really good at making the problems seem simpler. At that time, she felt a small sense of appreciation for his help. Thanks to John’s guidance in the following days, Chloe made great progress in her math and was even chosen to represent her class in a regional math competition.
When Chloe got award for the math competition, she looked out into the crowed. She saw John sitting in the front row, his eyes filled with pride and love. She knew that without his support and guidance, she wouldn’t be standing there. She felt a deep sense of gratitude for the man who had come into her life when she needed it most. After that day, Chloe totally let her guard down. She realized that John had not only become a part of her family but had also helped her create a new one filled with love, trust, and endless possibilities.

At first I thought this was very good, but then I found out that he only did this because he could not afford to pay for lunch. I did not want to upset him by telling him what I learned, so I brought extra food with me everyday and told him that my wife always packed me too much lunch because he was a chef at a restaurant and got food very cheap. He took the extra food and ate lunch with me, even though he seemed embarrassed. Years later, I received a letter from tom, and I was full of thanks. He became a doctor and now travels to poor hospitals around the world to help those in need. Many years ago, I taught a student named tom, who is from a very poor family.

The team found evidence of footprints and tail drags left by these early animals, while scientists don’t know exactly what they were for a shortage of physical remains.
A. Effortless. B. Incomplete. C. Meaningful. D. Unclear.
