After Anan d Malligavad accidentally fell into a lake, he thought he might die. Not from drowning (溺水), but the strong, unpleasant smell. Like hundreds of other lakes in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, the one Mr. Malligavad suddenly found himself in was a container for sewage (污水) and plastic waste. His unplanned dip happened one Friday in 2017, when Mr. Malligavad, a mechanical engineer, was on a walk with friends, discussing a problem, near his company.
Walking back home, he smelled so bad that a guard refused his entry into his own office. The next day, Mr. Malligavad made an unlikely proposal to his company: He would restore the 36-acre lake if it funded the project. To his bosses at Sansera Engineering, one of the largest automotive manufacturers in India, the idea seemed foolish. That Mr. Malligavad had no knowledge of lake management made it only more unconvincing. “They laughed at me,” said Mr. Malligavad. “Everyone thought I was crazy.”
But he didn’t give up. Mr. Malligavad turned to the knowledge left behind in records from the Chola Dynasty that, starting about 1,500 years ago, ruled the surrounding Deccan Plateau for five centuries and built a self-sustaining network of irrigation lakes. After four months of studying the Chola methods — including how to trap silt (淤泥) using carved stones, which need no maintenance — he won a $100,000 corporate social responsibility fund from his company for the cleanup project. “Until I finished, they had no hope it would actually work,” he said.
In 45 days, using a dozen excavators and hundreds of workers, Mr. Malligavad removed enormous amounts of mud, waste and plastic from Kyalasanahalli Lake. He opened its blocked channels, created five islands with the excavated mud and waited for the rains.
Six months later, after the rainy season, he was boating in the clean water of the lake, surrounded by ducks and migratory (迁徙) birds, with the same friends who had helped pull him out of the once-dirty spot.
24. What does paragraph 1 say about Mr. Malligavad?
A. He fell into a lake when rescuing a friend.
B. He found a lake full of plastic waste by accident.
C. He had an argument with his friend near a lake.
D. He almost got drowned while swimming in a lake.
25. Why did Mr. Malligavad study the records from the Chola Dynasty?
A. To gain information about the history of the dynasty.
B. To learn some knowledge of lake management.
C. To improve his stone-carving techniques.
D. To map the whole Deccan Plateau.
26. Which words can best describe Mr. Malligavad?
A. Ambitious and independent. B. Humble and innovative.
C. Enthusiastic and humorous. D. Responsible and determined.
27. What is the message delivered in the last paragraph?
A. The rainy season was key to the cleanup work.
B. The lake was an important habitat for migratory birds.
C. Malligavad’s cleanup project was a complete success.
D. Malligavad was grateful to his friends who had saved him.

The National Archives (档案馆) needs help from people with a special set of skills - reading cursive (草书). The archival office is seeking volunteer citizen archivists to help them classify and/or transcribe (转录) more than 200 years’ worth of handwritten historical documents. Most of these are from the Independence War-period, known for rounded and flowing handwriting.
“Reading cursive is a superpower,” Suzanne Isaacs, a community manager with the National Archives Collection told USA Today. “It’s not just a matter of whether you learned cursive in school, but it’s how much you use cursive today.” Isaac s oversees over 5,000 citizen archivists that help read and transcribe some of the more than 300 million digitized objects within its collection. Volunteers can help with everything from retirement records, field notes made by geographers working on the Mason-Dixon line, to movement and population records.
Interested volunteers can sign up online, no application required. Reading cursive text can help, but it is not required for some of the records. Independence War retirement records have a “no cursive required option,” where volunteers can help label the ones that have already been transcribed’ so that it will be easier to find them.
Cursive writing was once a standard in US classrooms, with handwriting graded, but it declined with the rise of typewriters and computers. By 2010, Common Core had prioritized keyboard typing, though 14 states still require cursive instruction. In 2023, California passed a law requiring the teaching of “cursive or joined italics” from first to sixth grade, citing the importance of reading historical documents like those in the National Archives.
Brain expert Claudia Aguirre noted that cursive writing, compared to typing, activates brain pathways that support learning and language development. Research shows handwriting is better than typing for memory and learning, though the benefits are just tied to writing, and not specifically to cursive over print.
The National Archives says AI is improving when it comes to reading cursive but human help is still needed. Issues like marks, ink bleeding, and older letter forms make human editors essential for final corrections.
28. What can volunteers do to help with documents?
A. Label and type. B. Study and apply.
C. Categorize and transcribe. D. Digitize and archive.
29. What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A. Explaining how cursive writing enhances memory.
B. Showing the decline and return of cursive writing.
C. Describing the advantages of typing over handwriting.
D Highlighting the role of reading cursive in education.
30. What is Claudia Aguirre’s opinion about cursive writing?
A. It is no match for typing at improving memory.
B. It benefits the advancement of writing skills.
C. It is more effective than typing for certain tasks.
D. It helps strengthen brain functions related to learning.
31. Why does cursive reading need human assistance as AI improves?
A. People have better cursive writing skills.
B. People handle digitized objects more often.
C. AI struggles with messy and old handwriting.
D. AI has limited knowledge of historical documents.

A new study in Nature by last year’s Nobel winner in Chemistry reveals a possible game-changer in snakebite treatment. Researchers have created new proteins that fight the deadly poisons in snakes, potentially offering a safer and more effective alternative to traditional antivenoms
According to the WHO, snakebites affect 1.8 million to 2.7 million people each year, causing roughly 100,000 annual deaths and three times as many permanent disabilities. Most injuries happen in less developed countries, where weak health systems aggravate the issue. Currently, the only antivenoms for snakebite are from animal plasma (血浆) and often come with high costs, limited effectiveness, and negative side effects. However, a team led by 2024 Nobel winner in Chemistry David Baker from the University of Washington School of Medicine and Timothy Patrick Jenkins from DTU (the Technical University of Denmark) used deep learning tools to design new proteins that fight poisons from deadly snakes.
The study focuses on an important class of snake proteins called three-finger poisons, which often make traditional antivenoms ineffective. While not yet protecting against full snake venom, the AI-generated antivenoms provide full protection from deadly doses of three-finger poisons in mice: 80% — 100% survival rate, depending on the exact dose, poison and designed protein.
The scientists reasoned that the new antivenoms could be produced using microbes (微生物),avoiding traditional animal immunisation and potentially reducing production costs. But there are more advantages, explains Timothy Patrick Jenkins. “An added benefit of these designed proteins is that they are small — so small that we expect them to enter tissue better and fight the poison faster. And because the proteins were created entirely on the computer using AI-powered software, we dramatically cut the time spent in the discovery phase.”
Despite these encouraging results the team stresses that traditional antivenoms will remain the main treatment for snakebites for the time being. The new computer-designed antivenoms could initially serve as supplements (补充) or agents that improve the effectiveness of current treatment until next-generation treatments are approved.
32. What does the underlined word “aggravate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Worsen. B. Explain. C. Remove. D. Simplify.
33 What is the advantage of the new proteins designed by the research team?
A. They can be used to detect disease in its initial phase.
B. They are effective in fighting three-finger poisons in humans.
C. They are likely to cut the costs and shorten the time of treatment.
D. They have made it possible to treat snakebites in less developed countries.
34. Why will traditional antivenoms still be the main treatment for snakebites?
A. It takes time to change people’s traditional beliefs.
B. The newly-developed proteins prove less effective than expected.
C. Animal plasma used in traditional antivenoms is easier to access.
D The new antivenoms have not been fully developed for widespread use.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Snakebites: A Global Health Crisis
B. Deep Learning Tools: Transforming Medical Research
C. Traditional Antivenoms: High Costs and Side Effects
D. New Proteins: A Promising Hope for Snakebite Treatment

Parents worry about their kids’ screen time. ___36___ To figure it out, it helps to think about a child’s overall health and wellness. Do they get plenty of sleep and exercise? Do they spend quality time with family? If the answers are no, then limiting screen time might help. Try these techniques to set healthy boundaries and keep conflict to a minimum.
* Start with compassion (同情心). Unstructured screen time is an important source of comfort and entertainment for many kids. It can also be a source of conflict, though. ___37___ You can say to your kids, “Look, I know you need to relax.” Let them know a certain portion of their screen time is theirs to do what they like.
* Offer additional screen time as a bonus. ___38___ If you go this route, be sure to let your child know exactly what is necessary to earn that time. For example, getting ready for bed without complaining might earn them an additional ten minutes the next day.
*___39___ It can also be helpful to set specific times of the day or week when your kids know they’ll be allowed to use their screens. For instance, maybe the 30 minutes before dinner are always open for screen time. That kind of structure helps kids know what to expect.
* Emphasize connection. Experts recommend no screen time for kids under the age of two —except for FaceTiming with relatives, which can benefit the whole family: This activity provides a way of maintaining relationships, especially for young kids. ___40___
A. Keep a timetable.
B. Make your schedule more flexible.
C. You might have to make exceptions sometimes.
D. But it can be hard to know how much is too much.
E. Try using extra screen time as a reward for good behavior.
F. It also gives you a chance to relax or get other things done.
G. Understanding their needs is a simple way to reduce stress for everyone.

Stopping my excuses has been a long and uneven road. I was the kind of person who could easily be persuaded to ___41___ almost anything. Whenever there was a task, my mind would look for ___42___ to avoid it. “I’ll work out tomorrow,” I would tell myself, conveniently ___43___ the fact that I had said that the day before. The turning point came when I knew these small things were ___45___, and they were creating stress and I just couldn’t ___46___it. I would lie in bed at night, feeling a sense of ___47___. I knew I had let myself down, and that realization ___48___ me. So I thought it was time to try something ___49___.
I started by doing just a tiny bit. Like, “You only have to fold five shirts.” I was doubtful at first. But I took a deep breath and picked up the first shirt. To my ____50____, once I got going, I found it wasn’t so hard. And before I ____51____ it, half of the laundry was folded. When I looked at the tidy shirts, my heart was filled with ____52____. Now, whenever I want to make an excuse, I will ____53____ that feeling and use it as motivation to push forward.

Since I was seven, I have dreamed of becoming a member of the Student Union in my school. I always admired those members for taking responsibility for all of us. They gave instructions, organized school activities, and gave speeches on school issues. They were our role models.
As time went by, my desire to join the Student Union grew stronger. I longed to be the one resolving students’ concerns, offering solutions, and making a meaningful impact.
Years flew by, and soon I was able to participate in the elections. When I was twelve, I entered my name as a junior member and prepared my election speech. On the day of the election, each candidate delivered their speech, and then the voting began. My close friends had promised me their unwavering support, and with hopeful anticipation, I silently prayed for victory.
The next morning, we gathered on the playground as the principal prepared to announce the results. I could feel my heart pounding as I waited to hear my name, certain that my dream was just about to come true.
One by one, names were read aloud, and the crowd erupted into cheers as the girl with the highest votes walked up to the stage. I closed my eyes and waited for my name to be called. But when the last name was read, mine was not among them. My heart sank, completely broken by the hard truth. My dream was ruined, and all I wanted was to run home and cry my heart out.
That evening, I lay on my bed, crying uncontrollably and feeling as if my entire world had collapsed. But as my tears dried up and silence filled the room, I started to think more clearly. I admitted that my speech wasn’t perfect. Besides, I hadn’t made enough efforts to connect with others, nor had I made enough efforts to impress them. This thought made me realize my loss wasn’t the end of the world — it was a lesson. I wouldn’t give up. I would learn from this experience and try again, better prepared.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
On reflection, I realized action speaks louder than words.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then came my second election, and I stepped onto the stage with confidence.

D Malligavad was grateful to his friends who had saved him.
【答案】24 B 25. B 26. D 27. C
根据第一段中“Like hundreds of other lakes in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, the one Mr. Malligavad suddenly found himself in was a container for sewage and plastic waste.(和印度南部城市班加罗尔其他数百个湖泊一样,Malligavad先生突然发现自己掉进的这个湖泊是一个污水和塑料垃圾的容器)”可知,Malligavad先生意外发现了一个满是塑料垃圾的湖。
根据第二段中“That Mr. Malligavad had no knowledge of lake management made it only more unconvincing. “They laughed at me,” said Mr. Malligavad. “Everyone thought I was crazy.”(Malligavad先生对湖泊管理一无所知,这更让人难以信服。“他们都嘲笑我,”Malligavad先生说,“每个人都觉得我疯了。”)”和第三段中“But he didn’t give up. Mr. Malligavad turned to the knowledge left behind in records from the Chola Dynasty that, starting about 1,500 years ago, ruled the surrounding Deccan Plateau for five centuries and built a self-sustaining network of irrigation lakes.(但他没有放弃。Malligavad先生转而研究朱罗王朝留下的记载中的知识。大约从1500年前开始,朱罗王朝统治着周围的德干高原长达五个世纪,并建立起了一个能够自给自足的灌溉湖泊网络)”可推测出,Malligavad先生研究朱罗王朝的记录是为了学习一些湖泊管理的知识。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“He would restore the 36-acre lake if it funded the project.(如果公司资助这个项目,他将恢复这个36英亩的湖泊)”和第三段中“But he didn’t give up. Mr. Malligavad turned to the knowledge left behind in records from the Chola Dynasty that, starting about 1,500 years ago, ruled the surrounding Deccan Plateau for five centuries and built a self-sustaining network of irrigation lakes.(但他没有放弃。
根据最后一段“Six months later, after the rainy season, he was boating in the clean water of the lake, surrounded by ducks and migratory birds, with the same friends who had helped pull him out of the once-dirty spot.(六个月后,雨季过后,他和曾经帮他从那个曾经肮脏的地方拉出来的朋友们一起,在清澈的湖水中划船,周围是鸭子和迁徙的鸟类)”可知,Malligavad先生和朋友在清澈的湖水中划船,周围还有鸭子和迁徙的鸟类,这说明他成功清理了这个湖泊,即他的清理项目取得了完全成功。故选C。
C
D. Highlighting the role of reading cursive in education.
C 29. B 30. D 31. C

根据第一段“The archival office is seeking volunteer citizen archivists to help them classify and/or transcribe (转录) more than 200 years’ worth of handwritten historical documents. (档案馆正在寻求志愿公民档案员的帮助,帮助他们分类和/或转录200多年来的手写历史文件。)”可知,志愿者可以帮助分类和转录文件。故选C。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Cursive writing was once a standard in US classrooms, with handwriting graded, but it declined with the rise of typewriters and computers. By 2010, Common Core had prioritized keyboard typing, though 14 states still require cursive instruction. In 2023, California passed a law requiring the teaching of ‘cursive or joined italics’ from first to sixth grade, citing the importance of reading historical documents like those in the National Archives. (草书曾经是美国教室里的标准,手写会被评分,但随着打字机和电脑的兴起,它逐渐衰落。到2010年,共同核心标准已经将键盘打字作为优先事项,尽管仍有14个州要求教授草书。2023年,加州通过了一项法律,要求从一年级到六年级教授‘草书或连写斜体’,理由是阅读国家档案馆等历史文件的重要性。)”可知,第四段主要关注的是草书的衰落和回归。故选B。

Despite these encouraging results, the team stresses that traditional antivenoms will remain the main treatment for snakebites for the time being. The new computer-designed antivenoms could initially serve as supplements (补充) or agents that improve the effectiveness of current treatment until next-generation treatments are approved.
32. What does the underlined word “aggravate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Worsen. B. Explain. C. Remove. D. Simplify.
33. What is the advantage of the new proteins designed by the research team?
D. The new antivenoms have not been fully developed for widespread use.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Snakebites: A Global Health Crisis
B. Deep Learning Tools: Transforming Medical Research
C. Traditional Antivenoms: High Costs and Side Effects
D. New Proteins: A Promising Hope for Snakebite Treatment
A 33. C 34. D 35. D
故选A项。
根据第四段中的内容“The scientists reasoned that the new antivenoms could be produced using microbes (微生物),avoiding traditional animal immunisation and potentially reducing production costs. But there are more advantages, explains Timothy Patrick Jenkins. “An added benefit of these designed proteins is that they are small — so small that we expect them to enter tissue better and fight the poison faster.(科学家们推断,新的抗蛇毒血清可以利用微生物生产,从而避免了传统的动物免疫,并有可能降低生产成本。但蒂莫西·帕特里克·詹金斯解释说,还有更多的优势。“这些设计的蛋白质的另一个好处是它们很小——小到我们希望它们能更好地进入组织,更快地对抗毒素)”可知,新型蛋白质的优势在于可能降低治疗成本并缩短治疗时间。故选C项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的内容“Despite these encouraging results, the team stresses that traditional antivenoms will remain the main treatment for snakebites for the time being. The new computer-designed antivenoms could initially serve as supplements (补充) or agents that improve the effectiveness of current treatment until next-generation treatments are approved.(尽管这些结果令人鼓舞,但研究团队强调,传统抗蛇毒素目前仍将是蛇咬伤的主要治疗方法。新型计算机设计的抗蛇毒素最初可以作为补充或增强当前治疗效果的辅助手段,直到下一代治疗方法获得批准)”可推知,新型抗蛇毒素尚未完全开发并广泛使用。故选D项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,尤其是第一段中的内容“Researchers have created new proteins that fight the deadly poisons in snakes, potentially offering a safer and more effective alternative to traditional antivenoms (抗蛇毒素). (研究人员设计出新型蛋白质,用于对抗蛇毒,可能为传统抗蛇毒素提供更安全、更有效的替代方案)”可知,文章主要介绍了新型蛋白质在蛇咬伤治疗中的潜力。所以用D项“New Proteins: A Promising Hope for Snakebite Treatment(新的蛋白质:蛇咬伤治疗的希望)”作为本文的标题,与文章主题相符合。故选D项。

Then came my second election, and I stepped onto the stage with confidence.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On reflection, I realized action speaks louder than words. I knew I had to take action to address my weaknesses. I started to care about the interests of every student and the school by joining multiple school clubs and volunteering for events, ensuring I was actively involved in group activities. Additionally, I went all out to practice public speaking, aiming to convey my ideas clearly as well as making myself confident on stage. Each day, I worked hard to prepare for the big day.
Then came my second election, and I stepped onto the stage with confidence. I took a deep breath and looked at the crowd, feeling encouragement from those familiar faces.
