It was 2002 in Los Angeles, and we were seated on a bench in an outdoor holding area, waiting with other studio audience members. The show called Alpha Insights, similar to a talk show, was picking stories that fitted their topic. Its hosts included my favorite Hunter Bryant. Production assistants were handing out clipboards with questionnaires (调查表) , and the topic was suggested to be about social slips.
I was sandwiched between my eighteen-year-old niece Jessica and best friend Lisa, coaching them. “They want stories that’ll make for great TV, so we’re going to have to fight for ourselves,” I said. “Think of the most awkward social moment you’ve encountered, something others can relate to and might find a bit humorous.”
My own story was peerless. I’d gone to a fancy party where I was excited to mix. As I reached for a snack from a passing plate, my sleeve got caught on a decoration, and the whole plate tipped, sending food flying. People stared, and I felt my face burning. I noted it down, noticing the assistant’s smile as she scanned my words.
I’m sure our aggressive fighting will pay off, and I also want to meet Hunter Bryant up close. After others shared their stories, I was confident my story was going to make it on the air.
As we entered the sound stage, I actually began to get butterflies in my stomach, sweating even though the studio was freezing cold. I told Lisa I had a hunch we’d be interviewed. Sure enough, the assistant came over and asked us to share our stories as we’d told her. Moments later, the show began. The hosts took the stage to rouse applause. Then, Hunter Bryant was beside me, microphone in hand, as I recounted my embarrassing moment to him and the whole audience, just as I’d pictured. It was a thrilling and almost dreamlike experience, and my positive approach and attitude had paid off.
24. Why were the author, Jessica and Lisa seated in an outdoor holding area?
A. To meet the hosts. B. To get questionnaires.
C. To discuss social slips. D. To participate in a TV show.
25. What does the underlined word “peerless” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Boring. B. Average.
C. Remarkable. D. Daring.
26. How did the author feel when entering the sound stage?
A. Nervously excited. B. Confidently certain.
C. Angrily disappointed. D. Cheerfully content.
27. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Sharing Stories to friends
B. The Party Embarrassment
C. Meeting Hunter Bryant on Set
D. An Experience of Recording a TV Program
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. A 27. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了2002年作者在洛杉矶参加电视节目录制时的一次经历。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段前两句“It was 2002 in Los Angeles, and we were seated on a bench in an outdoor holding area, waiting with other studio audience members. The show called Alpha Insights, similar to a talk show, was picking stories that fitted their topic.(那是2002年的洛杉矶,我们坐在室外等候区的长凳上,和其他演播室的观众一起等着。这个名为Alpha Insights的节目类似于脱口秀,正在挑选适合他们主题的故事)”可知,作者、Jessica和Lisa坐在户外等候区,目的是等待进入摄影棚录制电视节目。故选D。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“I’d gone to a fancy party where I was excited to mix. As I reached for a snack from a passing plate, my sleeve got caught on a decoration, and the whole plate tipped, sending food flying. People stared, and I felt my face burning.(我去了一个很好的派对,在那里我很兴奋地混在一起。当我从路过的盘子里拿零食时,我的袖子被一个装饰物卡住了,整个盘子都翻了,食物飞了出来。人们盯着我看,我感到自己的脸在灼烧)”作者对自己经历的描述可知,在派对上伸手拿小吃时,袖子被装饰勾住,致使盘子倾斜,食物飞出去,引起众人注目,这样的经历是不同寻常的,故peerless意为“不同寻常的”。故选C。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“As we entered the sound stage, I actually began to get butterflies in my stomach, sweating even though the studio was freezing cold.(当我们进入摄影棚时,我的胃里开始紧张起来,尽管摄影棚很冷,但我还是出汗了)”和“Then, Hunter Bryant was beside me, microphone in hand, as I recounted my embarrassing moment to him and the whole audience, just as I’d pictured. Blinking (眨眼睛) serves a crucial bodily function, primarily by removing waste from our eyes and maintaining moisture, but now recent research suggests it may also have a cognitive (认知的) role. In 1945, Arthur Hall at the University of Sheffield in the UK reported on the frequency of blinking as people read aloud finding that it mostly coincided (一致) with gaps in the print. He suggested that blinking may assist people stop for a short time as they read.
To expand on this idea, Louisa Bogaerts at Ghent University in Belgium and her colleagues looked into the data gathered from a previous study of the Ghent Eye-Tracking Corpus, in which 15 participants were monitored as they silently read an Agatha Christie’ s novel across four sessions, during which they blinked a total of 30, 367 times. “The results clearly show that we do not blink randomly when reading,” said Bogaerts. The team found that the participants were less likely to blink after reading words that frequently occurred in the text compared with those that occurred infrequently. “This suggests that cognitive effort influences blinking behavior,” said Bogaerts.
In a follow-up study, the researchers tried to get a better sense of when the frequency of blinking was highest. Blink rates were 4. 9 times higher at any punctuation (标点符号), on average, compared with other positions in the text. They were also 3. 9 times higher at the end of a line on a page and 6. 1 times higher when punctuation and line endings coincided. “Increased blinking likely reflects that these are natural attentional break points; we match with these breakpoints in the text and take a break to blink,” said Bogaerts.
“Together, these findings support the assumption that blink timing during reading is not random, but strategically matches with the cognitive demands posed by the text, enhancing our understanding of how we process written information,” said Bogaerts. Though Bogaerts’s research has some limitations, its practical significance for future reading activities is still considerable.
28. What can be known from Hall’s report about blinking?
A. It helps people stop during the reading.
B. Its frequency matches with reading breaks.
C. It contributes to removing waste from eyes.
D. Its frequency relates to bodily factors.
29. How did Bogaerts and her colleagues draw their conclusions in paragraph 2?
A. By explaining reasons.
B. By studying previous research data.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By showing the effect.
30. What did the follow-up study focus on?
A. The result of blinking.
B. The random pattern of blinking.
C. The blinking peak in the reading.
D. The relation of punctuation and line endings.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward Bogaerts’s study?
A. Favorable. B. Unclear.
C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.

Deep in some of the world’s most remote rainforests in Central and South America, wild cocoa trees with beans of all different shapes and colors grow. If expertly harvested, the beans can be used to make the world’s best chocolate.
A subset of these trees was brought to West Africa by Europeans. Ghana invested heavily in its cocoa production, and Ivory Coast quickly followed suit. Now, most of the chocolate we eat comes from West African trees — bred to be strong and yield large quantities of cocoa beans that, according to Rowan Jacobsen, an author, make chocolate with a slightly bitter (味苦的) flavour.
However, Jacobsen accidentally tasted a chocolate bar, which its maker claimed was the first made entirely from wild cocoa that grew in the Bolivian rainforest. “It melted like silk, ” writes Jacobsen in his book. Soon after this first mouthful, Jacobsen flew to the Bolivian jungle to meet Volker Lehmann, a German agroforestry expert, who explained the Bolivian rainforest was an excellent location for rare cocoa plants. He didn’t want them to be like the cocoa trees in West Africa. Due to human cutting down trees and land expansion, there are fewer and fewer suitable places for cocoa trees to grow, leading to a sharp decrease in their numbers.
There are people with big dreams who believe they can protect the rainforest by turning ancient strains of cocoa trees into a valuable commodity (商品). We know of 10 or so families of cocoa, and many more are expected to discover. However, saving them isn’t easy. The trees are in some of the world’s most remote places, where setting up effective methods to dry and ferment (发酵) the beans is not an easy task. While wild chocolate opens up a new world of ancient and fantastical cocoa trees that are just waiting to be harvested, it must be developed without harming the ecosystems on which they depend, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the unique flavour behind wild chocolate.
32. What can we learn about the present chocolate products?
A. They rarely appear in Ghana.
B. Their ingredients come mostly from West Africa.
C. Their bitter taste is disliked by Rowan Jacobsen.
D. They were first brought into South America by Europeans.
33. Which is the reason for the decrease of the cocoa trees?
A. Habitat destruction. B. Tricky harvest.
C Lack of effective protective methods. D. Remote location.
34. What does the author suggest about the development of wild chocolate in the last paragraph?
A. It should prioritize profit over environmental protection.
B It should avoid harming the ecosystems that support cocoa trees.
C. It should focus on expanding cocoa production in Central Africa.
D. It should reduce the number of cocoa families to ensure quality.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The significance of chocolate.
B. The history of cocoa production.
C. The current state of cocoa trees in West Africa.
D. The struggle to protect and develop wild cocoa trees.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. D

My grandmother had spent her entire life in our small rural village, supporting our big family with love and devotion. She raised me, my sisters, brothers, and cousins with the warmth and care that only she could provide. Now, as the years caught up with her, her legs could no longer carry her, leaving her to a wheelchair.
One quiet afternoon, as she gazed longingly out of the window, she sighed and said, “I wish I could see the world outside this village before my time is up.” Her words struck a chord deep within us. My siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I exchanged determined looks, and we knew we had to make her dream come true.
That evening, we sat together, brainstorming ways to fulfill her wish. After much discussion, we made a plan: We would take turns pushing her wheelchair, going on a journey to explore our homeland.
Our first adventure was to the nearby mountains. The air was fresh, and the views were breathtaking. As we reached a scenic viewpoint, my grandmother’s eyes widened in amazement. “I never knew the mountains were so beautiful,” she said, tears welling up. Her joy was infectious, and we felt grateful to witness her happiness.
Next, we visited a quiet lake. The still water seemed to comfort her soul. “I feel so peaceful here,” she whispered, closing her eyes to enjoy the moment. We sat by her side, cherishing the wonderful moment.
But her favorite trip was to the seaside. As we arrived, the salty breeze and the sound of waves brought tears to her eyes. We helped her feel the sand between her toes and let her taste the sea air. She laughed as the waves kissed the shore, a sound so joyous that it made our hearts swell with happiness. “This is everything I have ever dreamed of,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. We knew then that these moments would stay with us forever, a testament to the love and bond we shared as a family.

【答案】 Unfortunately, Grandmother’s condition worsened. With heavy hearts, we made the difficult decision to bring her back home, hoping to keep her comfortable in her familiar surroundings. We did our best to recreate the joy of our adventures at home. We surrounded her with interesting stories from our trips, and she would smile, remembering the mountains, the lake, and the seaside. But there was sadness in her eyes. We knew she was full of regret.
We had a family meeting and we decided to continue the journey on behalf of (代替) Grandmother to finish her wish. We planned to visit more places she had dreamed of, carrying her spirit with us. Each time we returned, we shared our experiences with her, showing her photos and videos. “You’ve given me more than I could have ever imagined,” she said, her eyes filled with gratitude. Her words reminded us that love and memories are the greatest gifts we can give, and her dream became a lasting bond that united our family forever.

A To meet the hosts. B. To get questionnaires.
C To discuss social slips. D. To participate in a TV show.
25. What does the underlined word “peerless” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Boring. B. Average.
C Remarkable. D. Daring.
26. How did the author feel when entering the sound stage?
A. Nervously excited. B. Confidently certain.
C. Angrily disappointed. D. Cheerfully content.
27. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Sharing Stories to friends
B. The Party Embarrassment
C. Meeting Hunter Bryant on Set
D. An Experience of Recording a TV Program

C. Lack of effective protective methods. D. Remote location.
34. What does the author suggest about the development of wild chocolate in the last paragraph?
A. It should prioritize profit over environmental protection.
B. It should avoid harming the ecosystems that support cocoa trees.
