When John Watson leads a fitness class, he lights up. And the athletes in front of him respond (回应)in kind, often breaking into cheers. But what sets his classes apart are the students he teaches: All of them have intellectual and developmental disabilities (残障). Wellness and movement are important for this population. Individuals with these disabilities are more likely to have higher levels of fatness than the general population and face a much greater risk of many diseases.
Watson partners with programs that serve people with intellectual disabilities and Watson’s trained volunteer instructors give classes like cycling, yoga, Pilates and dance. Classes are free to the athletes, many of whom are low-income, and they’re also designed to be fit for anyone.
But helping them get fit isn’t Watson’s only goal. He wants to connect with the adults in his classes on an emotional (情绪)level. “We all want to be a part of something. They just don’t get the opportunity that often,” Watson said. “We create a sense of pride, belonging and love and they’ll show up to exercise. There’s a wide range of abilities of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We serve that whole range. And we call everyone an athlete, no matter what their ability is.”
The work doesn’t end when class is over. Afterwards, the athletes gather at a large wall chart, known as “The Champions Board”, where they put a sticker next to their name—a public record of their attendance and hard work. Athletes earn water bottles, T-shirts or hats, based on their attendance as well as different titles, like “coach”. Every few months, athletes are recognized at a celebration. The system works. The retention rate (保留率)for participants is more than 90% and in surveys, most report that they lose weight, gain strength, and feel less lonely.
4. What do we know about John Watson’s students?
A. They are kind of disabled. B. They have many diseases.
C. They are professional athletes. D. They are much fatter than others.
5. What does paragraph 2 say about John Watson’s classes?
A. They are designed for competition. B. They are easy to learn.
C. They are of a single form. D. They are highly thought of.
6. How does Watson treat his students?
A. He is strict with them. B. He considers them equal.
C. He protects them all the time. D. He makes them practice at home.
7. What is “The Champions Board” used as?
A. An encouraging system. B. A standard of punishment.
C. A tool to explain courses. D. A way to help each other.

Trust me, you don’t want to get caught under a tsunami! Tsunamis are one of the world’s most powerful natural forces. They can cause huge amounts of damage.
But do you know exactly what a tsunami is? They are huge, powerful waves in the ocean that grow as they reach the shore. Most tsunamis are actually caused by earthquakes. An earthquake happens when a big piece of the Earth’s crust( 地 壳 ) suddenly moves. When the piece of ocean floor moves, it creates big holes. The water floods in to fill these holes. When the water moves that quickly, it creates a huge wave. This is how tsunamis are born!
Other natural disasters like landslides, volcanic eruptions, and glaciers breaking off can also cause tsunamis. Once the water starts moving because of the force of the disaster, large waves begin to spread. These waves can move very fast. They have been recorded at speeds from 400 up to 500 miles per hour! They can also move across very long distances.
At first, the waves of the tsunami may not seem that tall. That’s because when the waves travel through the deep parts of the ocean, the top of each wave is very short. But as that wave comes near to the coast, it grows in height. Remember, the tsunami travels quickly. If you are sitting on a beach, you may not see the wave coming at first. But when the wave arrives, it will be like a towering wall of water. Some waves are as tall as 100 feet high. The biggest tsunami ever recorded happened in 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska. The wave was over 1,720 feet tall, and it wiped out trees, vegetation, and everything else in its way.
As frightening as tsunamis can be, you don’t need to worry too much about them. They don’t happen that often. Only about two tsunamis happen every year. And it is said that serious, really damaging tsunamis only happen about every fifteen years. So don’t worry.
8. Based on the information in the article, which natural disaster is not responsible for causing a tsunami?
A. tornado B. volcanic eruption C. earthquake D. landslides
9. If a tsunami forms in the deep ocean, 2,000 miles off the coast of Sri Lanka, how long at least will it take the tsunami to reach the coast of Sri Lanka ?
A. 2 hours B. 3 hours C. 4 hours D. 5 hours
10. Which of the following about tsunami is true?
A. The waves of the tsunami always move slowly over a long distance.
B. People on a ship in the deep ocean will notice a tsunami at once as soon as it forms.
C. When people on the beach first notice a tsunami, the waves are not tall.
D. People will not notice a tsunami until it gets close to the coast.
11. Where would this passage most likely to be found?

“Why do people enjoy saying that they are bad at math?” wonders Petra Bonfert, a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College. After seeing too many examples of adults “passing on mathematical anxiety like a virus,” Bonfert has an important message for math-phobic parents and educators: “We are passing on from generation to generation the fear for mathematics.”
Many people hold the view that math is inherently hard, and only people with an inborn mathematical ability can understand it. While well-meaning adults may think they’re encouraging kids by sharing their own math fears, research has shown the opposite. Research has found that the problem is particularly significant for girls, who “are especially affected when a teacher publicly announces math hatred before she picks up the chalk.” Moreover, a study published recently reported that female mathematical achievement was diminished in response to a female teacher’s mathematical anxiety. The effect was correlated: the higher a teacher’s anxiety, the lower the scores.”
Parents’ anxiety about math can have a similar effect on kids’ achievement and their attitude toward the subject. Children who received math homework help from mathematically fearful parents showed weaker math achievements than their peers, which in turn resulted in increased math anxiety for the children themselves. New research on math anxiety confirms that these parents unintentionally teach kids to expect that math will be beyond their capabilities.
Fortunately, Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist of Barnard College, has found a surprisingly easy way for parents to stop passing on math anxiety and build their children’s math confidence. The most important finding is the importance of normalizing math at home in a way that’s relaxing and playful: from using math-themed books and stories, playing with math games and toys to cooking together. He argues that we need to teach kids that “working on mathematical skills is not unlike practicing a sport. Neither can be learned by watching others perform the activity and both require encouragement and effort. You do not need an inborn mathematical ability in order to solve mathematical problems. Rather, what is required is perseverance, a willingness to take risks and feeling safe to make mistakes.
12. Why do some people share their math fear with kids?
A. To expect kids to learn from their mistake. B. To prove only geniuses can learn it well.
C. To give encouragement to their kids. D. To stress the importance of genetic factors.
13. What does the underlined word “diminished” mean?
A. Decreased. B. Measured. C. Improved. D. Influenced.
14. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. Normalizing maths at home is relaxing and full of fun.
B. Having an inborn math ability is essential to children.
C. Developing mathematical skills differs from doing a sport.
D. Encouragement and efforts help yield math learning success.
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Math-phobic adults are to blame for math failure.
B. Math anxiety is nothing to be afraid of at all.
C. Parents and teachers pass on math fear to kids.
D. Risks and mistakes are what success takes.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. C
【解析】

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.
The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!
In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It turned out to be a great day for us.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then, my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. “I think she’s the very person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,” said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can’t wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!

A. They are kind of disabled. B. They have many diseases.

C. He protects them all the time. D. He makes them practice at home.
7. What is “The Champions Board” used as?
A. An encouraging system. B. A standard of punishment.

11 Where would this passage most likely to be found?
A. in a newspaper B. in a science magazine C. in a textbook D. in a story book
D

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
