While sharing her story, Sandberg and coauthor Adam Grant reveal research-based tips on how to recover after a big loss. Their take-home message is that by “finding personal strength, gaining appreciation, forming deeper relationships, discovering more meaning in life, and seeing new possibilities”, people can make sense of their experiences and not only recover but also grow up from a disaster. The Nature Fix by Florence Williams Florence Williams describes our complicated connection with the natural world and nature’s impact on our health creativity, and happiness. She takes readers on an entertaining tour of “forest bathing” in Japan, where people take medically recommended walks in forests to reduce stress. She introduces research suggesting that living near green spaces is good for our health which has inspired the Singapore government to have more greenery in their urban development. The Power of Meaning by Emily Esfahani Smith How do we seek meaning? Journalist Emily Esfahani Smith argues that we are on the path to a meaningful life when we aim to increase our belonging within a group, find a purpose, tell stories about our lives that create a clear narrative (叙述), and seek transcendence (卓越) through spirituality. To this end, she provides activities that we can use to grow in each of these domains. The Strength Switch by Lea Waters While many parents believe pushing kids to overcome perceived weaknesses is the best way to give them a leg up, researcher (and parent) Lea Waters offers parents a look at real-life examples of strength-based parenting and a series of activities and exercises to help them identify their children’s inherent (内在的) strengths, along with strategies for turning on the “strength switch” — the ability to see their children through positive quality, rather than focusing on what needs fixing. 1. What can we learn from Option B? A. People can recover and grow from loss by developing new skills. B. Recovering from a significant loss is possible through a series of personal strategies. C. Spending time in nature has significant benefits for our health, creativity and well-being. D. Achieving a meaningful life involves cultivating a sense of belonging and discovering a purposeful life. 2. Who has played a role in Singapore’s environmental construction? A. Adam Grant. B. Emily Esfahani Smith. C. Florence Williams. D. Lea Waters. 3. Which book is intended for parents? A. Option B. The Nature Fix. C. The Power of Meaning. D. The Strength Switch. B At the end of 2015, Delhi’s air pollution was so alarming that the high court said it was like “living in a gas chamber”. To tackle the problem, inspired by policies adopted in other countries and regions, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal introduced driving restrictions on private vehicles beginning 1 January 2016: Cars with odd and even number plates would be allowed to run on alternate days. But this created a problem of transportation, to which Akshat Mittal found a solution, a website called odd-even. com. It was a neat carpooling fix for thousands of city workers—odd-numbered car owners were matched with even-numbered ones, based on timings, gender, profession and age. They could book a one-way ride or a return journey, using their cars by turns. Quite simple really, but it took a 13-year-old to figure it out. The website got over 30,000 registrations during the first phase alone. As an unusually focused teenager Akshat doesn’t see himself as any different from other kids. His favorite subjects are mathematics and physics and he loves playing badminton. But rare at his age, the 10th grader sees himself as a “someone who identifies problems and tries to solve them by making products, using technology”. Encouraged by his father, he has been doing basic web programming. “I always wanted to learn new languages”—but it looks like computing is the language of his choice. Now 15, Akshat has come a long way. He sold his website to the ride-sharing app. Orahi in April 2016. Among the youngest entrepreneurs in the world, he is now working on a project called Change My India, a platform for change-makers to connect and solve societal problems. Akshat’s contributions have not been ignored——apart from extensive media coverage, he has been recognized by The Global Education & Leadership Foundation and invited to speak at TEDx and VCCircle. 4. Why did Akshat Mittal set up odd-even. com website? A. To discuss driving restrictions. B. To raise awareness of air pollution. C. To aid with Delhi’s vehicle registration issue. D. To address a transportation problem for city workers. 5. What’s paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Who are qualified for registration. B. Why car owners are matched randomly. C. How Akshat Mittal’s solution works. D. What is supposed to be done to book a journey. 6. Which of the following best describes Akshat? A. Emotional. B. Creative. C. Inflexible. D. Humorous. 7. What do we know about Akshat’s entrepreneurial journey? A. He has the courage to take risks. B. He will be involved in multiple projects. C. He’s widely honored for his work. D. He intends to buy a ride-sharing app. C Climate change is already having impacts like soaring temperatures, stronger hurricanes, intensified floods and a longer and more severe wildfire season. Scientists warn ignoring it will bring “untold suffering” to humanity. But will it lead to humans extinction? If we just consider the direct impacts, it’s unlikely to cause our extinction. However, climate change can still endanger hundreds of millions of lives. It may cause food and water shortage, potentially leading to a societal collapse and global conflict. Humans are increasing the amount of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, in the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels and other activities. These gases trap and hold heat from the sun, causing global temperatures to rise and the climate to change much faster than it otherwise would, putting humanity on a dangerous path. A runaway (失温) greenhouse effect is probably the only way climate change impacts could directly cause human extinction, according to Luke Kemp, a research associate at the Centre at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Fortunately, the runaway green-house effect is unlikely to occur on Earth. For the effect to occur a planet needs carbon dioxide levels of a couple of thousand parts per million (Earth has a little over 400 parts per million) or a huge release of methane, and there isn’t evidence for that at this time, Brian Kahn, a research scientist told NASA in 2018. Michael Mann, an atmospheric science professor, says a global temperature increase of 3℃or more could lead to a collapse of societal infrastructure (社会基础设施) and massive conflict, similar to Hollywood films. Climate change could cause a societal collapse by creating food insecurity. Planet warming negatively impacts food production, like increasing water shortage and reducing food harvests, Live Science reported. Food production losses can increase human deaths, drive economic loss and socio-political instability. While avoiding complete extinction doesn’t appear to be a very promising aspect of climate change, there is reason for hope. Experts say it isn’t too late to avoid the worst-case scenarios (情况) with significant cuts to greenhouse gas emissions. “It is up to us,” Mann said. “If we fail to reduce carbon emissions substantially in the decade ahead, we are likely committed to a worsening of already dangerous extreme weather events, coastlines inundation (淹没) due to melting ice and rising sea level, more pressure on limited resources as a growing global population competes for less food, water and space due to climate change impacts. If we act boldly now, we can avoid the worst impacts.” 8. What are the current impacts of climate change mentioned in the passage? A. More rainfall and shorter wildfire seasons. B. Lower sea-levels, fewer wildfires, and stable climate. C. Rising temperatures, stronger hurricanes, and intensified floods. D. Decreasing temperatures, weaker hurricanes, and less severe floods. 9. What is required for a runaway greenhouse effect to occur? A. An enormous amount of methane emissions. B. An increase in the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere. C. A decrease in, the amount of methane in the atmosphere. D. Carbon dioxide levels of a few hundred parts per million. 10. What can be inferred from the passage? A. Humans will not be affected by climate change in the future. B. Scientists have found a way to completely stop climate change. C. The runaway greenhouse effect is likely to happen on Earth in the future. D. Climate change doesn’t directly cause human extinction but brings serious problems. 11. What is the main idea of the passage? A. To describe the possible solutions to climate change. B. To explain how climate change is caused by human activities. C. To discuss whether climate change could lead to human extinction. D. To introduce the main impacts of greenhouse gases on the atmosphere. D As a child, Molly Easterlin loved playing sports. Sports, Easterlin believes, underlie most of her greatest successes. They taught her discipline and teamwork, helped her make friends and enabled her to navigate the many challenges of growing up. When Easterlin became a doctor, she started seeing a lot of children suffering from trauma Many of these kids didn’t respond fully to traditional treatment for trauma. Depressed and searching for answers, Easterlin turned to her own past. “I suspected that sports might have a powerful impact,” she says. Her research, published Tuesday, finds that, in short, yes: Participation in team sports as a young person can significantly reduce the long-term likelihood of depression and anxiety for people with childhood trauma. To analyze how team sports impact the health of people who have experienced childhood adversity (逆境). Easterlin and her colleagues analyzed data from 9,668 teens who participated in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. They homed in on about 5,000 teens who had reported one or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The kids were assessed first in 1994–1995 when they were in seventh to 12th grade and asked whether they participated in team sports. Fourteen years later, in 2008, these same people, now adults, were asked whether they had ever received a diagnosis (诊断) of depression or anxiety. They were also tested for depressive symptoms in case they just hadn’t been diagnosed. Easterlin found that kids who had participated in team sports were significantly less likely to receive a diagnosis of depression or anxiety and less likely to test positive for depressive symptoms. The study also doesn’t point out exactly why sports may help, but. Easterlin thinks teamwork may be a key. However, Easterlin says, it’s important to consider additional factors, like emotional connection with relatives and a sense of safety and support. Easterlin also notes that the study did not distinguish between kids with one ACE and those with multiple ACEs: For kids with more ACEs, she thinks the effect of team sports would very likely have been even more powerful, but it remains to be further studied. 12. What does the underlined word “underlie” mean in Paragraph 1? A. Stabilize. B. Facilitate. C. Relieve. D. Dismiss. 13. How was the National Longitudinal Study mainly conducted? A. By doing questionnaire surveys. B. By setting up experimental and control groups. C. By referring to and comparing with other research data. D. By conducting long-term tracking of research subjects. 14. What might play a key role in sports’ impact according to Easterlin? A. Time management. B. Teamwork. C. Exercise intensity. D. Gender. 15. What does the last paragraph focus on? A. The illustration of the research’s possible limitations. B. The methodology of the research on adolescent health. C. The significance of sports in treating childhood trauma. D. The connection between team sports and reduced depression. Imagine any gathering of people — a wedding reception, a job interview, or even just two off-duty workers chatting on the street. ___16___? They all involve people trying to converse with one another. Yet, in these moments, we often struggle to find words to say. Let’s change that and turn small talk into big ideas. One way to move beyond small talk is to ask open-ended questions. ___17___. Radio interviewer Terry Gross once said that the best icebreaker is simply, “Tell me about yourself.” Instead of asking a pointed question like “What do you do?”, this type of open question allows someone to introduce a topic they’re genuinely excited to discuss. ___18___. In our attempts to be polite, we tend to answer questions directly, or just repeat others’ observations. Look at the example. James: It’s a beautiful day! John: Yes, a beautiful day! See? By mirroring James’s opinion and language, John stopped the conversation and missed an opportunity for a more engaging interaction. An even better way to break the boring-conversation mirror is to skip over the expected response, and go somewhere next-level. For instance, if someone says, “I love this coffee shop,” instead of simply agreeing, you might respond with, “Me too! Have you tried their seasonal latte? It’s my favorite and pairs perfectly with their new cake.” ___19___ . It also opens up the conversation for further exploration. The art of transforming small talk into engaging conversations lies in our ability to ask open-ended questions and avoid the trap of mirroring. ___20___. A. This not only avoids mirroring B. Or worse, we do a passable job at talking C. Which ideas will be worth spreading next D. What do these situations have in common E. We can invite people to share stories rather than give one-word answers F. A phenomenon called “mirroring” also prevents small talk turning into real talk G. With it, we can turn even the most boring exchanges into opportunities for connection 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 In the heart of our home lies a treasure: my grandmother’s recipe for apple pie. A few months before I began college, my parents surprised me with the one thing every young adult desires: a brand new laptop. That summer, I was glued (全神贯注于) to the screen, living in a digital world. I spent hours on social media, chatting with friends, and ignoring the real one around me. I was more concerned with the virtual interactions than the actual people and places around me. Being online was more important than anything else. So, when I heard my dad’s plan for our family vacation that year, I was less than thrilled. “This year,” he announced, “we’re going to try something different. We’re going to a farm.” A farm wasn’t my ideal vacation, but it was still a break from the routine. I went through the packing up and planning, barely listening to the instructions. My mind was elsewhere, on the Internet, where my conversations never stopped. I was so absorbed in my digital world that the first time I really paid attention to the real world was when we get to our destination — a remote farm. I stared out the window to see the breathtaking views outside. The air coming through the open windows was warm and carried the fresh smell of the forest. But the view wasn’t what caught my attention. The moment I got off the car, I rushed into the farmhouse. The real shock came when I tried to check my e-mail and found that I had no Internet connection. “We have no Wi-Fi here” a boy said softly. He might be the oldest of the 3 kids on the farm. I looked at him, too depressed to say anything. My laptop would be completely useless. I would live in the wilderness for a week with no way to connect to the online world. I was close to tears, afraid of the boredom I had to tolerate in the coming days. Early next morning, the boys came to invite me to breakfast. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Surprisingly, I never thought of my laptop that week. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 英语试题 试卷满分:150分 考试时间:120分钟 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? The Nature Fix by Florence Williams部分中“Florence Williams describes our complicated connection with the natural world and nature’s impact on our health, creativity, and happiness. She takes readers on an entertaining tour of “forest bathing” in Japan, where people take medically recommended walks in forests to reduce stress. She introduces research suggesting that living near green spaces is good for our health which has inspired the Singapore government to have more greenery in their urban development. 由文章最后一段“While many parents believe pushing kids to overcome perceived weaknesses is the best way to give them a leg up, researcher (and parent) Lea Waters offers parents a look at real-life examples of strength-based parenting and a series of activities and exercises to help them identify their children’s inherent (内在的) strengths, along with strategies for turning on the “strength switch” — the ability to see their children through positive quality, rather than focusing on what needs fixing. D。 B At the end of 2015, Delhi’s air pollution was so alarming that the high court said it was like “living in a gas chamber”. As an unusually focused teenager, Akshat doesn’t see himself as any different from other kids. 4. D 5. C 6. B 7. They could book a one-way ride or a return journey, using their cars by turns 根据文章第三段“But rare at his age, the 10th grader sees himself as a “someone who identifies problems and tries to solve them by making products, using technology”.(但在他这个年龄,这位十年级学生将自己视为“一个通过技术制造产品来识别问题并尝试解决问题的人”)”可推知,Akshat具有创造性。 根据文章第五段“Akshat’s contributions have not been ignored——apart from extensive media coverage, he has been recognized by The Global Education & Leadership Foundation and invited to speak at TEDx and VCCircle.(Akshat的贡献并未被忽视——除了广泛的媒体报道外,他还获得了全球教育与领导力基金会的认可,并受邀在TEDx和VCCircle上发表演讲) ”可推知,Akshat因其工作而广受赞誉。故选C。 C Climate change is already having impacts like soaring temperatures, stronger hurricanes, intensified floods and a longer and more severe wildfire season. 8. C 9. A 10. D 11. However, climate change can still endanger hundreds of millions of lives. It may cause food and water shortage, potentially leading to a societal collapse and global conflict.(如果仅考虑直接影响,气候变化不太可能导致我们灭绝。 文章第一段提出问题“Scientists warn ignoring it will bring “untold suffering” to humanity. But will it lead to humans extinction?(科学家们警告称,忽视气候变化将给人类带来“难以言表的苦难”。 C。 D As a child, Molly Easterlin loved playing sports. B 13. D 14. B 15. 由文章第一段中“Sports, Easterlin believes, underlie most of her greatest successes. They taught her discipline and teamwork, helped her make friends and enabled her to navigate the many challenges of growing up. 由文章第五段中“The kids were assessed first in 1994–1995 when they were in seventh to 12th grade and asked whether they participated in team sports. Fourteen years later, in 2008, these same people, now adults, were asked whether they had ever received a diagnosis (诊断) of depression or anxiety. 由文章第六段中“The study also doesn’t point out exactly why sports may help, but. Easterlin thinks teamwork may be a key. 由文章最后一段“However, Easterlin says, it’s important to consider additional factors, like emotional connection with relatives and a sense of safety and support. Easterlin also notes that the study did not distinguish between kids with one ACE and those with multiple ACEs: For kids with more ACEs, she thinks the effect of team sports would very likely have been even more powerful, but it remains to be further studied. 故选A。 Imagine any gathering of people — a wedding reception, a job interview, or even just two off-duty workers chatting on the street. ___18___. In our attempts to be polite we tend to answer questions directly, or just repeat others’ observations. With it, we can turn even the most boring exchanges into opportunities for connection 【答案】16. D 17. E 18. F 19. A 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Imagine any gathering of people — a wedding reception, a job interview, or even just two off-duty workers chatting on the street.(想象一下任何人群的聚会场景——一场婚礼招待会、一次求职面试,甚至只是两名下班后在街上闲聊的工人。)”可知,上文提到了一些聚会场景;再根据下文“They all involve people trying to converse with one another. D“What do these situations have in common(这些情况有什么共同之处呢?)” 【17题详解】 根据上文“One way to move beyond small talk is to ask open-ended questions.(超越闲聊的一个方法是提出开放式问题。)” E“We can invite people to share stories rather than give one-word answers(我们可以邀请人们分享故事,而不是让他们只给出一个词的回答。)” 根据下文“In our attempts to be polite, we tend to answer questions directly, or just repeat others’ observations. It all started with the gift. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Early next morning, the boys came to invite me to breakfast. I was surprised to see that they had not just fish and chips like me the day before, but a decent breakfast of eggs, toast and jam. I later learned the oldest boy’s name was Ben and the younger boy was his brother, Matt. Ben asked me to go fishing with him. Then we went out of the house and walked down to the lake. I was so excited because I had never seen a lake before. I was surprised at the vastness of the lake and the trees that surrounded it. Surprisingly, I never thought of my laptop that week. I felt so happy to have made new friends. I was so caught up in enjoying my time with new friends that I never once thought about my laptop. I learned to live without the Internet. I learned to live without my laptop. I was so immersed in the surroundings and the people around me that I never thought of the Internet. After that trip, I realized that I preferred to spend time with real people. 词汇激活 行为类 ①看见:see/spot ②走到:walk down to/make one’s way to ③陷入:be caught up in/be immersed in 情绪类 ①惊讶的:surprised/shocked ②兴奋的:excited/thrilled 【点睛】[高分句型1] I was so caught up in enjoying my time with new friends that I never once thought about my laptop.
