An amazing occurrence happened in South Africa when 31 elephants made a "Journey To Pay Their Respect" to their hero who had saved their lives and many other animals. Lawrence Anthony (1950-2012), a legend (传奇人物) in South Africa and author of 3 books including the bestseller The Elephant Whisperer, bravely rescued wildlife and elephants all over the globe, including the courageous rescue of Baghdad Zoo animals in 2003. On March 7, 2012, Lawrence Anthony died.
Two days after his passing, the wild elephants showed up at his home led by two old female elephants. Separate wild groups arrived to say goodbye to their beloved man-friend. A total of 31 elephants had patiently walked over 12 miles to reach his South African House. Witnessing this sight, humans were obviously in awe (敬畏) because of not only the precise timing that these elephants sensed about Lawrence's passing, but also because of the deep memory and emotion the beloved animals showed in such an organized way.
Walking slowly — for days — they made their way in a one — by — one queue from their home in the wild bush to his house. Lawrence's wife, Francoise, was especially touched, knowing that the elephants had not been to his house prior to (在……前面的) that day for well over 3 years!
They knew where they were going and they seemed to know why they were going to Lawrence's home. The elephants obviously wanted to pay their deep respects, honoring their human friend who had saved their lives — so much respect that they stayed for 2 days and 2 nights without eating anything.
After honoring Lawrence Anthony in the only way they could, then one morning, they left, making their long journey back home.
24. When did the elephants appear at Lawrence Anthony's house?

C. On March 9, 2012. D. On March 11, 2012.
25. Which paragraph(s) shows the elephants were intelligent, emotional and well organized?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2.
C. Paragraph 2 and 3. D. Paragraph 3 and 4.
26 What makes Lawrence Anthony a legend?

B. The wild elephants' amazing occurrence.
C. His rescues of wildlife all over the world.
D. His special way of living with wild animals.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. An honorable legend B. A long journey back home
C. Well-organized wild elephants D. The day they remembered

After Taylor Swift, the “Mona Lisa” is probably the most recognizable female face in the world. Every day around 20,000 people stare at the Leonardo da Vinci’s painting in the Louvre. Yet it became famous not because of a tempting semi-smile. Until a worker stole the masterpiece in 1911, it was still mostly unknown; viewers flooded in to see what a French newspaper called “an enormous, horrific, gaping void (空白)”.
Classics of art, literature and music are supposed to carry some mysterious appeal that endures across the ages. But as Rochelle Gurstein, a historian, writes in a new book, the “timeless classic” is anything but. “What I believed was written in stone was actually written in water”, she argues. Classics come and go.
Take other celebrated works of art. Until the end of the 19th century Michelangelo’ s “David” had only his fig leaf to protect him from the weather in Piazza della Signoria in Florence. He attracted more pigeons than visitors; visitors preferred the artist’s sculpture of Moses in Rome. Before the famous “Venus de Milo” was discovered in 1820, viewers were crazy about “Venus de Medici”, a delicate sculpture most people alive today have never heard of.
Much as in art, the classics of music and literature have not always been set in stone either. Today, Johann Sebastjan Bach is often regarded as the master of classical music. But after his death in 1750, Bach’s compositions fell out of fashion until Felix Mendelssohn, a German composer, rediscovered them in the 1820s. Herman Melville’s masterpiece “Moby Dick” was largely forgotten until critics such as Raymond Weaver, a professor at Columbia University rescued him from the depth of a nobody around the centenary of his birth in 1919.
“The status of classics” depends on critics and shows the power of passionate writers to change the way people look at art. Tastes evolve, and they should. But culture lives on only as long as people continue to argue over what counts as a classic today. The true enemy of the classic is not relativism or awakening. It is silence.
28. What made the painting “Mona Lisa” famous?
A. The theft. B. The semi-smile. C. The report. D. The painter.
29. What does Rochelle think of classics?
A. Enduring. B. Fading. C. Changeable. D. Admirable.
30. How does the author develop paragraph 4?
A. By making a comparison. B. By offering examples.
C. By giving an explanation. D. By giving a description.
31. What might ultimately discourage the development of classics?
A. The ignorance of culture. B. The course of time.
C. The evolution of tastes. D. The lack of criticism.
D
When caught in the rain, we have all run for cover—often to a nearby tree. On the way, we step over short-lived puddles and hastily formed streams, marveling at how quickly the soil changes from supportive and predictable to untrustworthy: slippery, soft, and spongy. At the first chance we tend to flee, skipping further observation.
Given that direct observations are often unfeasible, remote observation systems are crucial in capturing phenomena that are frequent and unpredictable. However, the Bimbache community of El Hierro observed water running down tree bark during fog events and captured it for drinking, washing and agriculture. If more contemporary hydrologists (水文学家) had watched the raking of fog by trees, forest managers may not have logged the Bull Run Watershed, which reduced local rainfall by 30%.
Water science faces criticism because of “techno-optimism that tries to solve all problems despite not asking fundamental questions”. In fact this issue extends beyond water science. An interdisciplinary research team led by John Van Stan from Cleveland State University argues that scientists should go beyond the laboratory to directly observe weather phenomena. The researchers insist that hands-on observation of storm events is crucial in comprehending the complexities of wet weather.
“Natural scientists seem increasingly content to stay dry and rely on remote sensors and samplers, models, and virtual experiments to understand natural systems. Consequently, we can miss important stormy phenomena, imaginative inspiration, and opportunities to build intuition—all of which are critical to scientific progress,” said Van Stan’s team.
This type of “umbrella science”, they warn, can miss important localized events. For instance, in describing rainwater’s flow from the forest treetops to the soils, the authors note that “if several branches efficiently capture and carry storm water to the stem, rainwater inputs to near-stem soils can be more than 100 times greater”. Likewise, water vapor (水蒸气) clouds trapped beneath forest treetop covers may escape remote detection, yet be sensitive to scientists on the ground. On a broader level, these oversights can affect ground Earth system models, which often underestimate forest treetop water storage.
Direct observation, however, has gone beyond making up for the shortcomings of “umbrella science”. Van Stan and colleagues see core value in first-hand storm experiences—not only for natural scientists, but also students studying the impacts of climate change on ecosystems.
32. How do people tend to react to rain?
A. In a defensive manner. B. In a scientific manner.
C. With a wait-and-see attitude. D. With an observation-oriented attitude.
33. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word in paragraph 2?
A. Impolite. B. Impossible. C. Inconvenient. D. Illogical.
34. What does Van Stan’s research team argue in terms of hands-on observation?
A. It is effortless and precise. B. It is virtual and accepted.
C. It is complex yet time-saving. D. It is crucial yet overlooked.
35. What will the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A. The grounds for starting the research.
B. The scientific value of conducting the research.
C. The strengths of the research for learners majoring in ecology.
D. The expert evaluations of the research across disciplines.

How Your Brain Deceives You
Your brain possesses some incredible abilities, from recalling conversations with close friends to tackling complex math problems with ease. ____36____ At times, it may even overlook critical information, resulting in errors that could be bad for your well-being or health. ____37____
One of the biggest shortcomings of your brain is that it can get lazy. When trying to solve a problem or make a decision, your mind often falls back on solutions that have worked in the past. While using shortcuts can be a useful and effective approach, they can also trip you up and cause you to make mistakes. For example, maybe you’re terrified of flying because you can think of several tragic, high-profile plane crashes. In reality, traveling by air is much safer than traveling by car. ____38____
Moreover, your brain might fail to detect significant changes occurring in your surroundings, a phenomenon referred to as change blindness. ____39____ — otherwise, it will get overwhelmed. Seemingly not like a huge problem, it can have major consequences according to some research. For example, people who have jobs like air traffic control can make potentially disastrous errors as a result of change blindness.
____40____ In the process, we twist reality to protect our self-esteem — in other words, we don’t want to own up when we mess up. Why do we participate in the blame game? Researchers believe it’s to safeguard our self-esteem and shield ourselves from the fear of failure. When adopting this mindset, we attribute negative outcomes to factors beyond our control.
A. Your brain has to prioritize what it pays attention to.
B. But it is not that perfect and open to imperfections.
C. This realization can carry you through some unnecessary errors.
D. However, you can avoid some of these errors by acquiring a better understanding of them.
E. It goes without saying that your brain is incapable of processing all information at the the same time.
F. When something goes wrong, your brain instinctively seeks someone or something to hold responsible.
G. However, your brain is using a mental shortcut to fool you into believing flying is more dangerous than it is.

My dad helped me build a tree house in our backyard. My sister was at camp for three whole weeks and I was on the best baseball team in town. It was all good until Jeremy Ross moved into the neighborhood. I did not like Jeremy Ross. He laughed at me when he struck me out in a baseball game. He had a party on his trampoline (蹦床) but I wasn’t even invited.
Jeremy Ross was the only person on my enemy list. I never even had an enemy list until he moved into the neighborhood. I hung the list up in my tree house, where Jeremy Ross was not allowed to go. My dad told me that when he was my age he had enemies too. But he knew a good way to get rid of them. I asked him to tell me how.
“I’ll show you how!” he said. He pulled a really old recipe book off the kitchen shelf. Inside, there was a worn-out scrap of paper with faded writing. “Enemy Pie,” he said, satisfied. I was wondering what exactly is in Enemy Pie. But Dad said the recipe was so secret. I begged him to tell me something or anything. “I’ll tell you this,” he said. “Enemy Pie is the fastest known way to get rid of enemies.” This got my mind working. What kinds of things — disgusting things — would I put into a pie for an enemy?
When Dad was preparing for the pic, I brought Dad some weeds, earthworms and rocks, but he didn’t think he needed those. I went out to play alone. I shot baskets until the ball got stuck on the roof. And all the while, I listened to the sounds of my dad chopping and stirring and blending the ingredients of Enemy Pie. I thought the Enemy Pie must be the most awful thing in the world. To my surprise, I smelled something really good. I asked Dad what was wrong. Enemy Pie shouldn’t smell this good.
注意:
1.续写词数应150个左右;
But Dad told me: “In order for it to work, you need to spend a day with your enemy. Even worse, you have to be nice to him.”

M: What was that process like to create such wonderful artwork?
W: I lived in a town called Kelowna, in South Asia. It is quite a small community.
A. On March 5, 2012. B. On March 7, 2012.
26. What makes Lawrence Anthony a legend?
A. The bestseller The Elephant Whisperer.
B. The wild elephants' amazing occurrence.
C. His rescues of wildlife all over the world.
D. His special way of living with wild animals.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. An honorable legend B. A long journey back home
C. Well-organized wild elephants D. The day they remembered

Lawrence's wife, Francoise, was especially touched, knowing that the elephants had not been to his house prior to (在……

C The evolution of tastes. D. The lack of criticism.
A 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据第一段中“Yet it became famous not because of a tempting semi-smile. Until a worker stole the masterpiece in 1911, it was still mostly unknown; viewers flooded in to see what a French newspaper called “an enormous, horrific, gaping void (空白)”.(然而,它之所以出名,并不是因为一个诱人的半笑。直到1911年一名工人偷走了这幅杰作,它基本上仍然不为人知;观众蜂拥而至,看到一家法国报纸所说的“一个巨大的、可怕的、裂开的空洞”。)”可知,让《蒙娜丽莎》这幅画出名的是一次工人偷窃事件。故选A项。
根据第二段中“But as Rochelle Gurstein, a historian, writes in a new book, the “timeless classic” is anything but. “What I believed was written in stone was actually written in water”, she argues. Classics come and go.( 但正如历史学家罗谢尔•格斯坦(Rochelle Gurstein)在一本新书中所写的那样,“永恒的经典”绝非如此。“我相信写在石头上的东西实际上是写在水里的,”她说。经典作品来来去去。)”可知,罗谢尔认为经典作品是多变的。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Today, Johann Sebastjan Bach is often regarded as the master of classical music. But after his death in 1750, Bach’s compositions fell out of fashion until Felix Mendelssohn, a German composer, rediscovered them in the 1820s. Herman Melville’s masterpiece “Moby Dick” was largely forgotten until critics such as Raymond Weaver, a professor at Columbia University rescued him from the depth of a nobody around the centenary of his birth in 1919.(今天,约翰·塞巴斯蒂安·巴赫通常被认为是古典音乐大师。
根据最后一段““The status of classics” depends on critics and shows the power of passionate writers to change the way people look at art. Tastes evolve, and they should. But culture lives on only as long as people continue to argue over what counts as a classic today. The true enemy of the classic is not relativism or awakening. It is silence.(“经典的地位”取决于评论家,并显示了热情的作家改变人们看待艺术的方式的力量。品味在进化,也应该如此。但是,只要人们继续争论什么是今天的经典,文化就会继续存在。经典的真正敌人不是相对主义或觉醒。它是沉默。)”可知,缺乏批评可能最终阻碍经典的发展。故选D项。
In fact, this issue extends beyond water science.

根据第一段“When caught in the rain, we have all run for cover—often to a nearby tree.(下雨的时候,我们都会跑去躲雨——通常是跑到附近的一棵树上)”以及“At the first chance we tend to flee, skipping further observation.(一有机会我们就会逃跑,不去进一步观察)”可知,大多数人遇到雨时会迅速找地方躲避(例如躲在树下),一旦有机会,他们往往会立刻逃离,跳过进一步的观察,因此,人们对雨的反应是防御性的。故选A项。
根据第三段“The researchers insist that hands-on observation of storm events is crucial in comprehending the complexities of wet weather.(研究人员坚持认为,对风暴事件的亲身观察对于理解潮湿天气的复杂性至关重要)”可知,该研究团队强调了亲身观测的重要性;根据第四段““Natural scientists seem increasingly content to stay dry and rely on remote sensors and samplers, models, and virtual experiments to understand natural systems. Consequently, we can miss important stormy phenomena, imaginative inspiration, and opportunities to build intuition—all of which are critical to scientific progress,” said Van Stan’s team.(“自然科学家似乎越来越满足于保持干燥,依靠远程传感器和采样器、模型和虚拟实验来了解自然系统。因此,我们可能会错过重要的风暴现象、富有想象力的灵感和建立直觉的机会——所有这些对科学进步至关重要,”范斯坦的团队说)”可知, 过于依赖远程观测和实验模型会导致我们错过重要的暴风雨现象。综上可推可知,亲身观测是至关重要的,但往往被忽视。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Direct observation, however, has gone beyond making up for the shortcomings of “umbrella science”. Van Stan and colleagues see core value in first-hand storm experiences—not only for natural scientists, but also students studying the impacts of climate change on ecosystems.(然而,直接观察已经超越了弥补“伞科学”的缺陷。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
But Dad told me: “In order for it to work, you need to spend a day with your enemy. Even worse, you have to be nice to him.”

One possible version:
But Dad told me: “In order for it to work, you need to spend a day with your enemy. Even worse, you have to be nice to him.” It sounded incredible and awkward but thinking that I could get rid of this enemy forever, I resolved to meet him. After greeting and chatting, we were able to have fun together. He told me how to play on his trampoline and when we climbed up on the roof to get the stuck ball, Jeremy noticed my tree house. He asked whether he could go into the house. Considering I should be nice to him, I said okay to him. But I climbed up ahead of him and tore the enemy list off the wall. Time passed fleetly in our laughter.
We played games delightedly until my Dad called us for dinner. As was predicted, Dad brought out the pie. But at this point, I didn’t think Jeremy was my enemy anymore. He was eager to eat the delicious pie. I panicked and shouted: “Jimmy, don’t eat it! I think it’s poisonous or something!” He looked at me curiously. “If it’s so bad,” Jeremy asked, “then why has your Dad already eaten half of it?” I turned to my Dad and he was eating Enemy Pie! Although I was still confused about the pie, what seemed obvious was that from that day on, I had lost my enemy forever and had a new close friend!
