In the summer of 2016 Brian Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to Santa Ana, California. Outside the couple’s fourth-floor apartment, a homeless man was often yelling on the street corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night.
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading the book Love Does, about the power of love in action, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man. Inspired by the book’s compassionate message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.
“It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later on the podcast (播客) Top Artist. “I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year, probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.” And even though Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he found himself asking if he could paint a portrait (画像) for him. The man said yes.
Peterson’s connection with the homeless led him to form Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization focused on befriending and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused. Peterson sells the portraits for a few thousand dollars, putting it into what he calls a “love account” for his models. He then helps them use the money to get back on their feet.
In the eight years since Faces of Santa Ana was established, Peterson has painted 41 of these portraits. But there’s more to the finished products than the money they bring to someone who’s down and out. He’s discovered that the buyers tend to connect to the story of the person in the painting, finding similarities and often friendship with someone they might have otherwise overlooked or stereotyped (刻板印象).
“People often tell me, ‘I was the one that would cross the street. But I see homeless people differently now,’” Peterson says. “I didn’t know that would happen.”
4. What motivated Peterson to approach the homeless man?
A. He needed a model for his upcoming art exhibition.
B. He wanted to create a podcast about homeless people.
C. He was inspired by the book about love and its message.
D. His wife Vanessa encouraged him to start a new project.
5. What does Peterson do with the money from selling the portraits?
A. Donate the money to poor people. B. Buy art supplies for other artists.
C. Fund his nonprofit organization. D. Help the homeless improve their life.
6. What can we learn about the buyers?
A. They can understand homeless people better now.
B. They pay more attention to the prices of the portraits.
C. They are more interested in art after purchasing a portrait.
D. They prefer portraits of famous people over the homeless.
7. What can be inferred about Peterson’s project from the last paragraph?
A. It is far from satisfactory. B. It has an unexpected effect.
C. It attracts the world’s attention. D. It takes time to see the result.
C
Peterley Manor Farm, in the Chiltern Hills, has moved a long way from conventional farming. When Roger Brill, a fourth-generation farmer, and his wife, Jane, took over the deserted turkey farm in 1982, they set out to grow and sell fruit and vegetables from the farm gate. Now the 40-acre farm provides a “wild spa” with outdoor ice baths and yoga classes in a Mongolian yurt. Produce from the fields, including Christmas trees and apple juice, accounts for only a small share of the farm’s income. It made up less than a tenth of revenue last year.
“Instagram has changed everything,” according to Katy Brill, who took over the day-to-day running of Peterley Manor Farm from her parents in 2014. Novel experiences and scenic backdrops do very well on social-media platforms. In addition to the spa, the farm also hosts fitness boot camps, an outdoor cinema and farm-themed play for kids—all overlooking rolling fields.
The decision to diversify may not be new: farmers have sought alternative income streams for decades. But the need has become more urgent. Farms have been squeezed by huge rises in energy costs following Russia-Ukraine war and the sharply rising cost of agricultural labour in the years since Brexit. Increasingly unpredictable weather, including record amounts of rainfall, has made harvests less reliable. Consumer-focused services in particular are booming. Social-media use and a shift towards sustainability and wellness after the pandemic have driven demand for farm experiences.
Diversification brings new business for struggling farms. But adapting to consumer demands leaves them exposed to wider economic cycles. It also requires them to find workers with new skills. In future Peterley Manor Farm will need more marketers and chefs, for instance, and fewer farm hands. In one respect, though, things are not that different from old-fashioned farming. “The hospitality(招待)business is rather difficult,” says Ms Brill. “It’s hard work and long hours.”
8. What is the main source of income for Peterley Manor Farm today?
A Christmas tree sales. B. Agricultural products.
C Tourism-related services. D. Traditional crop cultivation.
9. Which of the following may be the most popular on today’s farm?
A. A nature-based nursery. B. A farm tool shop.
C. An indoor swimming pool. D. An apple juice bar.
10. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The developing trends of modern farms. B. The social media influence on the farm.
C. The factors driving farm diversification. D. The related agricultural policies on farm.
11. What challenge do diversified farms face according to the last paragraph?
A. Unstable weather conditions. B. Shortage of agricultural workers.
C. Strict environmental regulations. D. Demanding standards of service industry.
D
Just a few degrees’ difference can turn a dull and upset rainy day into a magical scene straight out of a snow globe. Alan Stewart, a weather and climate psychologist at the University of Georgia, think snow is more glorious and beautiful than everything else in weather. Snow changes the very shape of the world people see around them, Stewart says, pointing to the way a fresh blanket of it hides and yet reveals our surroundings. “Things that you look at every day suddenly can appear very different,” he says. “You maybe see the place in a new way.” Of course, snow has its haters, but there are some other powerful reasons why many people are so fascinated by gently falling ice crystals (水晶).
Snow can be a powerful reminder of childhood snow days — that joyful surprise when another expected day of sitting in school turned into one that was instead filled with snowball fights or sledding. But there are also plenty of reasons snow can appeal to people without that fond memory. In fact, says psychologist and writer Kari Leibowitz, snow quite literally changes our physical experience of the world. For example, freshly fallen snow is porous enough to absorb sound well, making the world quieter.
And it plays even more strongly on our sense of sight. “There’s something about the clean, fresh, white snow that is very aesthetically pleasing,” says Leibowitz, who has written a book about mental health in winter. One aspect of that visual appeal, she adds, is the way snow reflects light in the darker months “A lot of people really struggle with winter darkness as much as they struggle with the cold,” she says. “And so the brightening effect of the snow, I think, is really powerful.”
Snow often encourages people to interact with their surroundings differently as well, Leibowitz says. “I think the snow and the ice give us things to engage with in a sensory way that can be very playful and very childlike,” Leibowitz says. “There’s so much you can do with it in a tactile(触觉的)way.”
12. What does Alan Stewart think of snow in the first paragraph?
A. It causes dangerous road conditions.
B. It creates a uniquely magical atmosphere.
C. It appeals to many professional photographers.
D. It is beneficial to our mental and physical health.
13. What does the underlined word “porous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Full of small holes. B. Soft and smooth.
C. Temporarily existing. D. Extremely cold.
14. According to Kari Leibowitz, how does snow help people cope with winter?
A By encouraging indoor social activities.
B. By covering unpleasant urban landscapes.
C. By reducing the need for artificial lighting.
D. By reflecting light to brighten dark months.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Snow removal techniques require urgent improvement.
B. Childhood snow experiences determine adult preferences.
C. Different sensory factors contribute to snow’s fascination.
D. Snow is a visual reminder that we’re in a different season.

Maybe you’ve experienced it before: Your palms are sweating and your limbs feel weak or heavy. ___16___ Lebron James admits that even 20-plus years into his NBA career he still gets nervous-even before regular season games. But he welcomes the nerves: the nerves, he says, give him a sense of being present, of feeling alive.
So if you’re looking forward to a point in your athletic (or performance) career when you don’t get so nervous anymore, maybe it’s time to stop. Because the nerves don’t go away when you’re excited about what it is you get to do. ___17___ Research shows nerves can enhance performance when viewed positively. Your perception of nervousness shapes its actual impact.
One thing that helps is to begin the process of shifting your perception of your nerves. That is, to recognize that stress is not a dirty word. Stress can even be good. In fact, there’s a term in the social and behavioral sciences called eustress, meaning literally “good stress,” the kind of stimulus we have to have for learning and growth. ___18___
Figure out our best state of activation(激活)for each task we need to perform. Sport psychologists have done a lot of research on “individualized zones of optimal functioning,”(IZOF). ___19___ For example, a runner needs higher activation than a golfer. Finding your unique zone requires experimentation.
___20___ You might get it wrong sometimes. You might overshoot a little and be a little too excited, start a little too fast. Perfection is impossible. The only way you figure out what works for you is to give yourself the space to not get it right every time. And then after that, you rest, reflect, adjust and improve yourself toward your peak event.
A. Stimulate yourself to be better.
B. Give yourselves the space for trial and error.
C. You’re nervous and may not look calm and ready.
D. This theory suggests each task demands a specific level.
E. And the nerves can even help you to perform at your best.
F. Without it, you’re either bored or coasting along in the comfort zone.
G. Calm activities like yoga could unexpectedly become part of your routine.

In a small village nestled between two towering mountains, there lived two best friends, Mia and Leo. Mia was known throughout the village for her green thumb; her garden was the most vibrant and productive, providing fresh vegetables and herbs for everyone. Leo, on the other hand, was a master carpenter (木匠)。His hands could craft anything from furniture to tools, and his work was known for its high quality and beauty. Despite their different talents, Mia and Leo had always been inseparable, working together to solve problems and help their community thrive.
One summer, a fierce storm swept through the village. The river that ran through the valley swelled and overflowed, washing away the only bridge that connected the village to the nearest town. Without the bridge, the villagers were cut off from essential supplies and unable to trade their goods. The village leader called an emergency meeting, and it was quickly decided that rebuilding the bridge was the top priority.
Mia and Leo stepped forward to lead the project. At first, their cooperation was anything but smooth. Mia, with her deep knowledge of plants, suggested using strong, flexible vines (藤蔓) from the forest to create a hanging bridge. She argued that the vines would be flexible and blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings. Leo, however, insisted on using strong wooden board for a more traditional design. He believed that wood would provide the strength and stability needed to withstand future storms. Their arguments grew heated, and progress on the bridge came to a standstill.
One evening, as they sat by the riverbank, exhausted and frustrated, Mia noticed a flock of birds flying in perfect formation across the sky. She pointed them out to Leo. “Look how they work together,” she said. “Each bird has a role, and they adjust their flight to help one another. That’s how we should approach this project.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

In the summer of 2016, Brian Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to Santa Ana, California.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. B

A. Christmas tree sales. B. Agricultural products.
C. Tourism-related services.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. D

【11题详解】

A. By encouraging indoor social activities.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】
Leo nodded, realizing the truth in her words. He suggested combining their ideas, using both vines and wooden planks to create a bridge that was both strong and harmonious with nature. Mia agreed enthusiastically, and together they worked tirelessly, each contributing their unique skills. The villagers, inspired by their unity and leadership, joined in heartily, gathering materials and assisting in the construction. Through teamwork and innovative thinking, the bridge was completed ahead of schedule, becoming a symbol of collaboration and resilience.
The villagers gathered to celebrate with a feast. Tables were laden with Mia’s fresh produce and Leo’s handcrafted decorations, showcasing not just the fruits of their labor but also their talents. Laughter and music filled the air as everyone praised the new bridge and the friends who had made it possible. Mia and Leo, standing side by side, felt a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. They had not only rebuilt the bridge but also strengthened their bond and the unity of their community.
