Students can choose clubs that focus on an area of interest. Mathcounts Club Mathcounts tries to increase excitement towards mathematic achievement. It hopes to provide students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Schools select individuals and teams to participate in competitions. Local competitions are held in February with winners progressing to state competitions and then on to the national level. Envirothon The Envirothon program focuses on natural resources knowledge. The ecology field competition for five-member middle school teams offers competitions in wildlife, soils, forestry, current environmental issues and aquatics. Students work and learn in middle school clubs and can compete at the local and state level. Future Problem Solvers Future Problem Solvers is an academic club that uses a six-step process to solve problems that may happen in the future. Students who are in the talented and gifted program, who like to “think out of the box,” or who enjoy thinking about futuristic problems may like this club. Teams that score high enough can go to the state competition and then to the international competition. Builders Club Builders Club is open to any middle school student who wishes to perform community service. The members learn by doing, and they learn organization, teamwork, and leadership. Builders Clubs can provide a recycling collection point, organize canned food and clothing collection activities to support local shelters, adopt a resident at a local senior citizens home, etc. 1. Why do some of students choose Mathcounts Club? A. To be successful in science careers. B. To enjoy solving future problems. C. To perform community service. D. To study wildlife and soils. 2. Which club can students who are not interested in competitions choose? A. Mathecounts Club. B. Envirothon. C. Future Problem Solvers. D. Builders Club. 3. The passage mainly talks about _______. A. the state academic competitions B. middle school clubs C. extra-curricular homework D. the gifted students 【答案】1. A 2. D 3. 根据Mathcounts Club部分中的“It hopes to provide students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. (它希望为学生提供在科学、技术、工程和数学事业上取得成功的基础。)”可知,该俱乐部希望为学生在科学、技术、工程和数学事业上取得成功打下基础,由此可知,有些学生选择Mathcounts Club是为了在科学事业上取得成功。故选A项。 根据Mathcounts Club部分中的“Schools select individuals and teams to participate in competitions. (学校挑选个人和团队参加比赛。)”可知,学校要挑选个人和团队参加比赛;根据Envirothon部分中的“The eco logy field competition for five-member middle school teams offers competitions in wildlife, soils, forestry, current environmental issues and aquatics. (由五人组成的中学生态学竞赛包括野生动物、土壤、林业、当前环境问题和游泳。)”可知,该俱乐部中也涉及到参加竞赛;根据Future Problem Solvers部分中的“Teams that score high enough can go to the state competition and then to the international competition. (得分足够高的队伍可以参加州比赛,然后参加国际比赛。)”可知,在该俱乐部中得分高的团队参加州比赛,结合“Builders Club is open to any middle school student who wishes to perform community service. (Builders Club是开放给愿意执行社区服务的任何中学生。)”可知,该俱乐部向任何愿意执行社区服务的中学生开放,综合以上信息,只有Builders Club中未涉及到比赛的信息,所以如果对比赛不感兴趣的学生应该选择Builders Club。故选D项。 【3题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文内容以及第一段“At the middle school level, there are many academic clubs in which students can participate. Students can choose clubs that focus on an area of interest. (在中学阶段,有许多学生可以参加的学术俱乐部。学生可以选择专注于自己感兴趣领域的俱乐部。)”以及下文中的介绍的四个不同中学俱乐部的特点和适应对象可知,本文主要介绍了学校里四个不同的中学俱乐部的相关信息。故选B项。 B In her tiny Athens apartment, 93-year-old Ioanna Matsouka has knitted (编织) thousands of brightly colored scarves (围巾) for children in need from Greece to Ukraine, and she has no plans to quit just yet. “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says. Since she took up knitting in the 1990s, Matsouka has easily made over 3,000 scarves, her daughter estimates. In the hallway by the door, shopping bags filled with her latest creations await their new home. A knitted blanket is thrown over the sofa where she spends her days. Firstly given out to people around her as a gift, the scarves were later donated to children’s shelters across Greece as the number of knitted ones grew. Then, through friends, they reached children in Bosnia and Ukraine. The latest batch of 70 scarves went to a refugee (难民) camp near Athens this winter via the UN refugee agency. Her daughter, Angeliki, tells about drawings and mails that her mother has received over the years: “Thank you, be well, keep going. You gave joy to children, you gave joy to people.” That’s her only reward: a letter, a few words. Matsouka knits one scarf a day, now with small imperfections. Her vision is damaged and she suffers from severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia Angeliki says her mother is an example of resilience and optimism. Matsouka wakes up every morning, drinks a glass of milk, puts on her pearl earrings and gets to work. She takes a break for lunch and a nap, and then painstakingly knits into the night. She may have even found the secret to a long life in it, she says. “It’s the happiness I get from giving.” she says, sitting beside a big blue bag brimming with yarn (纱线). “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says. Her knitting needles click through her expert fingers, her nails painted red. “It brings me joy to share them.” 4. What did the scarves begin as? A. Presents to friends. B. Attempts for fundraising. C. Donation to a refugee camp. D. Supplies for children’s shelters. 5. What can we learn about Matsouka from paragraph 4? A. She gives in to her seriously damaged vision. B. She wakes up every morning due to facial pain. C. She continues knitting despite her health challenges. D. She is only rewarded with drawings and mails from her daughter. 6. What does the underlined word “resilience” mean? A. Persistence. B. Ambition. C. Appreciation. D. Passion. 7. What message does the article mainly convey? A. The eye is bigger than the belly. B. Giving enriches us more than accepting ever could. C. An early bird catches the worm. D. Time and tide wait for no man. A 5. C 6. A 7. 由文章第三段中“Firstly given out to people around her as a gift, the scarves were later donated to children’s shelters across Greece as the number of knitted ones grew. (起初,这些围巾是作为礼物送给她身边的人,随着编织数量的增多,后来被捐赠给了希腊各地的儿童收容所)”可知,这些围巾最初是作为送给朋友的礼物。故选A。 由文章第四段中“Her vision is damaged and she suffers from severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia (三叉神经痛).(她视力受损,还饱受严重的面部疼痛折磨,也就是三叉神经痛)”及“Matsouka wakes up every morning, drinks a glass of milk, puts on her pearl earrings and gets to work. She takes a break for lunch and a nap, and then painstakingly knits into the night.(Matsouka每天早上醒来,喝一杯牛奶,戴上她的珍珠耳环,然后开始工作。她会在午餐时间休息一会儿,小睡片刻,然后不辞辛劳地编织到深夜)”可推知,尽管面临健康挑战,Matsouka仍然坚持编织。故选C。 【6题详解】 词句猜测题。由文章第四段中“Her vision is damaged and she suffers from severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia (三叉神经痛). Angeliki says her mother is an example of resilience and optimism. (她视力受损,还饱受严重的面部疼痛折磨,也就是三叉神经痛)”及“Matsouka wakes up every morning, drinks a glass of milk, puts on her pearl earrings and gets to work. She takes a break for lunch and a nap, and then painstakingly knits into the night.(Matsouka每天早上醒来,喝一杯牛奶,戴上她的珍珠耳环,然后开始工作。她会在午餐时间休息一会儿,小睡片刻,然后不辞辛劳地编织到深夜)”可知,Matsouka尽管面临健康挑战但仍然坚持编织围巾,Angeliki仍称她是resilience和乐观的榜样,由此推断resilience意为“坚韧不拔,毅力”,与Persistence“锲而不舍,坚持”意思相近。故选A。 通读全文,尤其是根据文章最后一段“She may have even found the secret to a long life in it, she says. “It’s the happiness I get from giving.” she says, sitting beside a big blue bag brimming with yarn (纱线). “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says. Her knitting needles click through her expert fingers, her nails painted red. “It brings me joy to share them.” B。 C September 23, 2024 marks the start of a new season-but what exactly you should call that season depends on where in the world you are. In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you go to America, you’ll find that people use both “fall” and “autumn” when speaking about this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. So what is it about the season that makes it so special? According to Dictionary. com, “fall” isn’t a modern nickname that followed the more traditional “autumn”. The two terms (术语) are actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other. Before either word appeared in the dictionary, the season between summer and winter was known as harvest, or hærfest in Old English. The word is of Germanic stock (日耳曼语系) and meant “picking” or “plucking”, a nod to the act of gathering and keeping crops before winter. In the 1500s, English speakers began calling the seasons separating the cold and warm months “fall of the leaf” or “spring of the leaf”, or “fall” and “spring” for short. Both terms were simple, but for some reason, only “spring” stayed in Britain. By the end of the 1600s, “autumn”, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, had overtaken“fall” as the standard British term for the third season. Around the same time when England adopted “autumn”, the first-ever British American colonists (殖民者) were travelling to North America. With them they brought the words “fall” and “autumn”. Although the word“fall” fell out of fashion in England, it became a part of the local language by the time when America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is still a uniquely American behavior. 8. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. “Fall” is unacceptable in America. B. “Fall” is more commonly used in Britain. C. The start of a new season is always the same. D. Two words are used for the third season in America. 9. What was the season between summer and winter called before “fall” and “autumn” appeared? A. Picking. B. Spring. C. Harvest. D. Gathering. 10. What does the author say about “spring” in paragraph 4? A. It had more staying power. B. It was much easier. C. It was first used in the 1600s. D. It was a French word. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. “The Difference between Autumn and Fall” B. “The Change of the Third Season’s Name” C. “Seasonal Vocabulary in Various Regions” D. “Name Diversity in English-speaking Countries” 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. 由文章第一段中“In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you go to America, you’ll find that people use both “fall” and “autumn” when speaking about this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. (在英国,一年中的第三个季节通常只有一个名称:autumn。但如果你去美国,你会发现人们在谈论一年中的这个时节时,既会用“fall”也会用“autumn”,这使得它成为英语中唯一一个有两个被广泛接受名称的季节。)”可知,在美国,人们用fall和autumn这两个词来称呼这个季节,这是英语中唯一一个有两个广泛接受名称的季节。故选D。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第三段中“Before either word appeared in the dictionary, the season between summer and winter was known as harvest, or hærfest in Old English. (在这两个词被收录进词典之前,介于夏季和冬季之间的这个季节被称为harvest,在古英语中写作hærfest。)”可知,在fall和autumn这两个词出现在字典之前,夏季和冬季之间的季节被称为harvest,或古英语中的hærfest。故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。由文章第四段中“Both terms were simple, but for some reason, only “spring” stayed in Britain. (这两个词都很简洁,但出于某种原因,只有“spring”在英国保留了下来。)”可知,这两个词都很简单,只有spring留在了英国。因此,作者说spring更有持久力。故选A。 通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“September 23, 2024 marks the start of a new season-but what exactly you should call that season depends on where in the world you are. In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you go to America, you’ll find that people use both “fall” and “autumn” when speaking about this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. So what is it about the season that makes it so special? 因此,最适合作为文章标题的是“The Change of the Third Season’s Name (第三个季节名称的变化)”。故选B。 D While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens. The team studied the daytime screen-based activities of 475 teenagers using daily surveys. They asked the teens how many hours they had spent that day communicating with friends through social media and how many hours they spent playing video games, surfing the internet and watching television or videos. Finally, the researchers asked if they had joined in any of these activities in the hour before bed. Next, the team measured their sleep time for one week. The researchers found that the teens spent an average of two hours per day communicating with friends via social media, about 1.3 hours playing video games, less than an hour surfing the internet and about 1.7 hours watching television or videos. For every hour throughout the day that they used screens to communicate with friends, they fell asleep about 11 minutes later averagely. For every hour to play video games, they fell asleep about 9 minutes later. Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later. Interestingly, David, lead author of the study, said the team found no obvious relations between passive screen-based activities and sleep. “It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities,” said Anne, co-author of the study. “It’s a tricky situation,” she said. “These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for a teenager’s health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed.” 12. Which of the following belongs to interactive screen activities? A. Seeing movies. B. Watching videos. C. Texting friends. D. Listening to music. 13. Who might lose the most sleep according to the text? A. Lucy who watched a two-hour movie before going to bed. B. Jack who had a 30-minute video chat with his brother before bed. C. Sam who played computer games for two hours throughout the day. D. Amy who chatted with her friends on WeChat for one hour in the morning. 14. What does the underlined word “tricky” mean in paragraph 4? A. Frightening. B. Awkward. C. Hopeless. D. Encouraging. 15. What is author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To advocate banning all teens’ screen time for better sleep. B. To explain the effects of screen time on teens’ sleep and suggest limiting interactive ones. C. To inform the readers that passive screen use is better than interactive screen use. D. To compare popularity of screen activities among teens. C 13. B 14. B 15. 根据第一段“While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens. (虽然看屏幕的时间会影响睡眠,但新的研究表明,互动活动,如给朋友发短信或玩电子游戏,比看电视等被动屏幕时间更能推迟和减少睡眠时间,尤其是对青少年来说)”可知,给朋友发短信属于交互式屏幕活动。故选C。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later. (那些在睡前一小时聊天、发短信或玩游戏的人失眠最严重:大约30分钟后才入睡)”可知,杰克在睡觉前和他哥哥视频聊了30分钟可能会失去最多的睡眠。故选B。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for a teenager’s health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed. (如今,这些屏幕工具对每个人来说都非常重要,所以很难对其加以限制,但如果你真的关心青少年的健康和幸福,你可能会考虑限制他们进行更多的互动活动,尤其是在睡前一小时)”可知,这些屏幕工具现在对每个人都非常重要,所以很难限制它们,所以这是一个难处理的情况。故tricky意思是“难处理的”,与Awkward“难对付的,难处理的”意思相符。故选B。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens. (虽然看屏幕的时间会影响睡眠,但新的研究表明,互动活动,如给朋友发短信或玩电子游戏,比看电视等被动屏幕时间更能推迟和减少睡眠时间,尤其是对青少年来说)”以及最后一段中“These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for a teenager’s health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed. As a speaker of 10 languages I know the benefits of speaking more than one language. Actually, it is not a big challenge to learn languages. We only have to change the way we learn them. ____16____ Language learning is hard. It will be only difficult to learn a language if you don’t want to. ____17____ What you mostly need to do is spend some time listening and reading. Believe me, it is that simple. I have done it many times. Soon you will feel the satisfaction of understanding another language. Before you know it you start speaking. ____18____ No, you don’t. Anyone who wants to learn can succeed. In Sweden and the Netherlands most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted in languages. Foreign athletes in North America usually learn to speak English faster than people in more formal learning environments. In language learning it is attitude that determines success. You have to live where the language is spoken. Some immigrants (移民) to North America never learn to speak more than broken English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak perfect English. In 1968, I learnt to speak Mandarin fluently while living in San Francisco. ____19____ You can download it to your cellphone and listen. Where you live is not a problem. I would love to learn but I don’t have the time. How about the time you spend waiting in line, doing things around the house and going for a walk?____20____ Once you get started, even 10 or 15 minutes a day will soon grow to 30 minutes a day, or one hour. If you believe you will achieve great results, and if you enjoy doing it, as I do, you will find the time. I believe if you can avoid these traps, you will surely become masters of language learning. A. The following are some tips for you to follow. B. You have to have a gift for learning languages. C. Learning a language takes time, but is not difficult. D. We need to avoid some common misunderstandings. E. Languages can only be learnt instead of being taught. F. Why not use that time to listen to a language on your cellphone? G. With the Internet, language content is available to anyone with a computer. D 17. C 18. B 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 根据设空处前两句“Actually, it is not a big challenge to learn languages. We only have to change the way we learn them.(实际上,学习语言并不是什么大的挑战。我们只需要改变学习它们的方式)”可知,学习语言并不是艰巨的挑战,我们只需改变自己学习语言的方式。再根据下文各段小标题可知,接下来要介绍的是对语言学习的一些误解。D项“我们需要避免一些常见的误解”承接上文并引出下文内容。故选D项。 【17题详解】 根据下文“What you mostly need to do is spend some time listening and reading. Believe me, it is that simple.(你最需要做的是花些时间听和读。相信我,就是这么简单)”可知,作者认为学习语言实际上并不难,只需要花时间听和读。C项“学习一门语言需要花些时间,但是不难”符合语境,且C项中的takes time与下文中的spend some time呼应。 再根据下文中的“Anyone who wants to learn can succeed. In Sweden and the Netherlands most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted in languages.(任何想学习的人都能成功。 【20题详解】 根据上文中的“How about the time you spend waiting in line, doing things around the house and going for a walk?(你花在排队、做家务和散步上的时间呢?)” Isis Holt is not an average teenager. C September 23, 2024 marks the start of a new season-but what exactly you should call that season depends on where in the world you are. A Picking. B. Spring. C. Harvest. D. Gathering. “Name Diversity in English-speaking Countries” D While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens. As a speaker of 10 languages, I know the benefits of speaking more than one language.
