Best Cities for Walking in the World
There’s something magical about exploring a city on foot. In the world’s most walkable cities, walking isn’t just a means of getting around — it’s a way to experience the heart and soul of a destination.
Lucca, Italy
While Florence and Rome may attract more tourists, Lucca is a wonderful place that is worth exploring. The city is famous for its well- protected Renaissance (文艺复兴) walls that go around the historic city center. Visitors can walk along the tree-lined top of the walls, offering some of the best views of the town and the Italian countryside.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is a culturally diverse (多样的) city in South Africa that has a lot to offer tourists with every type of travel style. The most walkable destination is the V&A Waterfront, filled with lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. There’s not a bad view in sight, with the sea in one direction and Table Mountain in the other.
Zurich, Switzerland
Zurich brings together old-time charm and modern convenience, making it one of the best cities in Europe for exploring on foot. The Altstadt (Old Town) has narrow, winding streets, ancient buildings, and famous sights like the Grossmunster and Fraumunster churches. Walkers can enjoy the city’s well-kept parks and paths along Lake Zurich, which offer beautiful walking routes with views of the Swiss Alps far away.
Knightsbridge, United Kingdom
Knightsbridge is one of the richest neighborhoods in London and very easy to explore by walking. Here, you can find both fancy things and places that are easy for everyone to enjoy. B
At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me clearly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and gave up my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby improving your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably straightforward comments on me. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke (笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed (暴露) me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must imagine the word as it is to be written and leave a little bit of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural limits. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is flat, it carries rich meaning, showing the strength you’ve applied, the energy of your hold, the curve of your back.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your thoughts, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
4. What did the author think of her name “Chen Yiwen” at first?
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it.
B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She thought the characters were beautiful.
D. She understood the intention but still disliked it.
5. The author decided to learn calligraphy to __________.
A. protect plants from being harmed B. reconnect with her root
C. understand a new culture D. fit in with local community
6. From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy __________.
A. mirrors the creator’s spirits B. comes from creative energy
C. highlights the design of strokes D. depends on continuous practice
7. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Fortune favors the bold. B. Embrace who you truly are.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D. Planning is good, but doing is better.
C
Have you ever felt full after a meal but still wanted dessert (甜点)? Or taken a cookie just because it was there? Many of us find it hard to refuse sugar. In fact a study showed that 94% of lab rats preferred sweetened water to cocaine (可卡因). While sugar is not as harmful, it influences our brain in a similar way, bringing us pleasure and making us want more.
It’s natural for our bodies to ask for sugar. However, unlike fruits and vegetables, some foods have high amounts of sugar added to them. According to Dr. Vera Tarman, this can make eating sugar addictive — similar to how coca leaves were safe, but cocaine was dangerous. “Signs include thinking about sweets all the time, eating even when full.” Dr. Tarman said, “many people feel a meal isn’t complete without dessert — it becomes a habit.”
Too much sugar can harm your health, leading to heart problems, headaches, and low energy. What’s worse, it can keep your blood sugar high, making you feel tired and unwell. To break the habit, Dr. Tarman suggests stopping sugar completely rather than slowly cutting down on it. The first five days may be difficult — you might feel easily annoyed or have trouble sleeping. But by the second week, these feelings weaken. By the third week, you won’t even miss sugar.
“Start family-wide dietary improvements by eliminating sugary food intake, developing healthier eating habits for all members. After a meal, do something else, like drinking tea or taking a walk, to avoid reaching for sweets.” said Dr. Tarman. “Keep telling yourself why you’re quitting — maybe to build energy or lose weight, and ask a friend to support you.”
Quitting sugar may seem impossible at first, but after a few weeks, your taste will change. An apple will taste sweeter, and you’ll enjoy the freedom from sugar addiction.
8. According to Dr. Tarman, what makes people addicted to sugar?
A. Natural need for our bodies. B. High-added sugar in some foods.
C. Thinking about sweets all the time. D. Eating sweets even when full.
9. What does Dr. Tarman suggest doing to avoid sugar addiction?
A. Quitting sugar from diet totally. B. Stopping eating sugar gradually.
C. Weakening sugar influence slowly. D. Cutting down on sugar for two weeks.
10. Which may replace the underlined word “eliminating” in paragraph 4?
A. Making up. B. Applying for. C. Cutting out. D. Focusing on.
11. What positive change can you expect after stopping eating sugar?
A. You can enjoy sweet foods freely. B. Apples will not taste sweet to you.
C. You are sure to have a sweet tooth. D. A better sense of taste may come along.
D
A recent earthquake happened in California. Fortunately, no damage was reported. However, the earthquake was important in another aspect — many people in the area received warnings on their mobile phones just before the earthquake hit. Furthermore, several of these phones aided in detecting (检测) the earthquake in the first place.
Some smartphone companies have been developing a warning system that can remind users a few seconds before an earthquake hits. Although a few seconds may not seem like much, it can provide enough time to take cover under a table or desk, slow down trains, and prevent planes from taking off or landing. This system is expected to save lives during stronger quakes. It relies on information from two sources: a network of several seismometers (地震仪) placed across the states, and the world’s largest earthquake detection network created through smartphones owned by the public.
The mobile earthquake detecting and warning network uses built-in sensors (传感器) on mobile phones to replace traditional detection instruments. The system can work out whether an earthquake is happening and where. It can then send a warning to phones in the area where the earthquakes are likely to hit.
Radio signals travel faster than earthquake waves, allowing warnings to be sent before the shaking. This technology opens up the possibility of detecting the earthquakes in regions where widespread networks of costly seismometers cannot be used, and could provide earthquake warnings in even poorer places of the world.
The earthquake warning system has some limitations (限制), particularly in regions with low phone usage and in earthquakes that happen near the ocean, which can cause tsunamis (海啸). Additionally, while the system can provide a few seconds of advance warning, detecting earthquakes remains challenging. Still, there are hopes to expand the system’s usage worldwide in the future as long as we want to make a change in its limitations.
12. Why was the warning system invented?
A. To reduce the economic loss of earthquakes. B. To buy more survival time for people.
C. To raise people’s self-protection awareness. D. To figure out earthquakes’ location.
13. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Where the system is used. B. How the system works.
C. When the system will operate. D. What the system aims for.
14. What is special about the system?
A. It can be used in wider areas. B. It gives warnings days in advance.
C. It uses the Internet to send signals. D. It shares information recorded by users.
15. What will the scientists do to the system next?
A. Add the latest data to it. B. Shorten its warning time.
C. Keep working on its problems. D. Put it into computers instead of phones.

Second, expand your vocabulary by learning words in context rather than by rote. A wider vocabulary will speed up your reading and reduce misunderstandings. Lastly, practice timed reading regularly. Start with easier materials and gradually increase difficulty.
Consistent practice makes perfect. I’m sure you’ll make progress soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
