We need to talk a lot with our friends and family to build good relationships in our life. How can we improve our talking skills? Here are four ways that might help you have better conversations with people.

Repeat what the other person said. To show you have really understood someone, say what they have just said before you tell them your idea.

When I was about 12, I had an “enemy”, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time, I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you.”
“Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.” Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

Walk or drive to work? Which way is lower in carbon? To be friendly to the environment, you may choose to walk. Have you ever tried to live a low-carbon life through your diet?
A new study from the University of Oxford has looked into the health and environmental influences of 15 foods common in western diets. Among these, plant-based foods included fruits, vegetables, nuts and potatoes. It also studied animal-based foods, including red meat, chicken, milk products, eggs and fish.
According to the study’s lead researcher, Michael Clark, “Choosing better and greener diets is one of the main ways people can improve their health and protect the environment.” That is to say, plant-based diets are much healthier for us and kinder to the environment.
To get this result, researchers compared the influence of eating another portion (一份) of each food with the increased risk of a few illnesses. They also find out the environmental harm for each animal-based food and each plant-based food.
By using this method, the study found that red meats were the most unfriendly foods to the environment. Keeping farm animals produces a large number of methane (甲烷) that keeps 30 times more heat than CO2. As well as making the earth warmer, eating too much red meat is known to increase the risk of a few illnesses, such as heart trouble.
Plant-based diets can give us the same health benefits (好处) in a much greener way. According to the study, without eating or using meat and milk products, global farmland use could be cut down by more than 75% and still feed the world.
Speaking to the Guardian (《卫报》), Tim Benton of Chatham House said, “If we can give people reasonable official advice of what a healthy and green diet is, the world and its people would be in a much better place.”

【答案】One possible version:
The most valuable quality that I have
When it comes to the most valuable quality that I have, confidence always comes to my mind.
I was pretty excited when I was chosen to give a speech in front of the whole school. However, things didn’t go as smoothly as I had expected. I caught a bad cold a few days before the speech so that I hardly had time to read through my speech. Looking at the crowd, I felt like a fish out of water. At that moment, I noticed my teacher with a smile on her face in the crowd.
I suddenly remembered the words she told me, “Confidence is the first step on the road to success.” After taking a deep breath, I started my speech and successfully won a lot of praise in the end.
This experience gave me a sense of achievement. I have also learnt that being confident can help us get over difficulties more easily.

More and more people are using ChatGPT (an AI program) to make books for sale. Though just a few of them have been sold so far, human writers are concerned that books created by ChatGPT could harm the writing and publishing (出版) industries.
Until recently, Brett never thought that he himself could become a writer. But after learning about ChatGPT, Brett thought he had a good chance. Using AI software (软件), Brett created a 30-page children’s e-book in a few hours. He sold the book through an online bookstore for less than $100. While it might not sound like so much, it was enough to encourage him to use the software to create other books.
The online bookstore is said to be selling more than 200 ChatGPT books and the number is still rising. So, some writers expressed their worries. They are afraid that as these kinds of books become more popular, many writers will lose their jobs. Another writer said, “Using AI this way will turn literary (文学的) creation from an art into a simple technology.”

We need to talk a lot with our friends and family to build good relationships in our life. How can we improve our talking skills? Here are four ways that might help you have better conversations with people.

Don’t finish other people’s sentences. Studies show that doing this will make people lose interest in talking with you because you’re taking control of the conversation.
Repeat what the other person said. To show you have really understood someone, say what they have just said before you tell them your idea.
_________. By looking at the other person in the eye, you are showing that you are interested in what they’re saying. This also helps you listen more carefully.
