Martha Graham, born in 1894, was one of the most famous dancers and creators of dance, whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the modern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.
Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on.So Martha's parents didn't approve of her desire to dance at the beginning.Until 1916, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St.Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing.
In 1936, Graham made her defining work, Chronicle, which signaled the beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner.Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.
Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy.Once again, she was met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn't give up.Her last completed ballet was 1990's Maple Leaf Rag.A Dancer's World is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.
Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976.She was the first dancer to receive the country's highest civilian honor. She died in 1991.In 1998, Time magazine listed her as the“Dancer of the Century”and as one of the most important people of the twentieth century.

Chinese painters painted on various materials in many formats. The most popular materials with the earliest artists were wood and bamboo but then the following were adopted: plastered walls, silk, and paper.Canvas would only be used widely from the 8th century CE.Brushes were made from animal hair, cut to a tapering end and tied to a bamboo or wood handle.Significantly, they were precisely the same instruments used by the calligrapher. The inks used were made from rubbing a dried cake of animal or vegetable matter mixed with minerals and glue against a wet stone. Each artist had to laboriously (辛苦地) make their own inks as there was no commercial production of them.
The two most popular themes of Chinese painting were portraits and landscapes.Portraits in Chinese art began in the Warring States Period and were traditionally rendered with great restraint, usually because the subject was a great scholar, monk or court official and so should, by definition, have a good moral character which should be portrayed with respect by the artist. For this reason, faces are often seemingly impassive (面无表情的) with only the merest hint of emotion or character subtly expressed.Often the character of the subject is much more clearly expressed in their attitude and relationship to other people in the picture; this is especially true of portraits of emperors and Buddhist figures.
Landscape painting had been around as long as artists had, but the genre really took off during the Tang Dynasty when artists became much more concerned with humanity's place in nature.Typically, small human figures guide the viewer through a panoramic (全景的) landscape of mountains and rivers in Tang paintings. It should be no surprise that mountains and water dominated landscape painting as the very word in Chinese for landscape translates literally as“mountain andwater”.Trees and rocks are also featured and the whole scene is usually meant to capture a particular season of the year.Colours were limited in use, either everything in various shades of a single colour (illustrating the roots in calligraphy) or two colours combined, usually blues and greens.

Why People Collect Art?
Many people through history have gone to great lengths to collect art.But what motivates these collectors?
One popular explanation for collecting art is that they can have financial gain. Some resell artworks, earning enormous profits.16. .Immorally, some “collectors” purchase art as a form of money laundering (洗钱), since it is far easier to move art than cash between countries without examination.
17. .For them, art is important for other reasons. The best way to understand the underlying drive of art collecting is as a means of creating and strengthening social bonds, and as a way for collectors to communicate within these new networks.
Not only are collectors fond of creating social links, but they are also motivated by the messages they can send once these social networks are created. We all know art is a powerful way for the artist to express thoughts and feelings.18. .Displaying art can send a message about who the collector really is—at least who he sees himself as.
19. .Through the collections, collectors convey messages not just about themselves, but about the world as a whole. For example, the kid with the shoebox made of bird feathers might show others her collection not just to make friends, but to convince them of the importance of protecting endangered species.
People collect art for various reasons.20. .
A.Some gain artworks in an illegal way
B.But most collectors think little of profit
C.Artworks preserve the qualities of their makers
D.No doubt that art collecting is an addiction hard to overcome
E.Some get large tax reductions for donating art to museums
F.It also serves as an effective way for collectors to express themselves
G.Other art collectors see their collections as having a broader power

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jason threw the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit into a straight line as he glared at me.He pointed a finger at the paper.“Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,”he said, turning on his heels and leaving me in anger.“How dare he treat me like that,”I thought.I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.
As the weeks went by,I grew to dislike Jason. One day, another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to let the man know how I felt.I sat across from him and said calmly,“Jason, the way you've been treating me is wrong.I've never had anyone speak to me that way.As a professional,it's wrong, and I can't allow it to continue.”
Jason assumed a nervous smile and leaned back in his chair.I closed my eyes briefly.“I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,”I said.“I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that.Everybody does.”I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me.
Jason avoided me the rest of the week.Papers and letters appeared on my desk while I was at lunch, and my corrected versions were not seen again.I brought cookies to the office one day and left some on his desk.Another day I left a note.“Hope your day is going great,”it read.Over the next few weeks,Jason reappeared but there were no other episodes.
One year after our“talk”,I discovered I had cancer.I was thirtytwo, the mother of three young children, scared.Friends and loved ones visited and tried to find the right words to comfort me.No one knew what to say,and many said the wrong things.Others wept.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
One day, Jason came into the hospital room awkwardly, and placed a box beside me.
For ten years,I have watched those red and white flowers blossom every spring.
[参考范文]
One day, Jason came into the hospital room awkwardly, and placed a box beside me. “Tulips,” he said.I grinned, not understanding. He shuffled his feet, then cleared his throat.“If you plant them when you get home, they'll come up next spring.I just wanted you to know that I think you'll be there to see them when they come up.”Tears clouded my eyes and I reached out my hand. “Thank you,” I whispered.Jason grasped my hand and gruffly replied,“You're welcome. You can't see it now,but next spring you'll see the colors I picked out for you.I think you'll like them.”He turned and left without another word.
For ten years,I have watched those red and white flowers blossom every spring. In fact, this September, doctors declared me cured and I've watched my children graduate from high school and go on to college. In a moment when I prayed for just the right word,a man with very few words said all the right things. After all, that's what friends do.
