Despite the fact that motherhood has not been easy, Maxi Aubi believes that her son, Gianluca, has taught her much.
Gianluca was born with Angelman Syndrome (天使综合征), a genetic disease.Maxi was never afraid about the fact that she did not know what this condition was about. She had to get out there and face the music.“When he was a newborn baby, he used to cry all day long.He wouldn't eat or sleep. It was an endless cycle. We ran some tests and doctors told us his progress depended on us.But it was clear that something was wrong with him.So we visited several doctors and ran some other tests until he was five,”she explains.
Despite all of this, Maxi designed a treatment plan for Gianluca. It did not matter what he was suffering from; she believed love was the“medicine”that could cure him.She formed a group of ten people of different ages outside her family who were willing to help Gianluca's development. These people would come to her house in shifts from 9 AM to 7 PM with only one goal: to show Gianluca that he could achieve whatever he wanted.“We started encouraging him with games.During those two or three years, he learnt how to walk and he made huge progress,”she remembers.
Learning about her child's diagnosis (诊断) was a starting point for Maxi.To help relieve the pain of parents whose children suffered from the same condition, she created the Association for Parents coping with Angelman Syndrome which currently has about a hundred families.Living with these children is very enriching. This is why the association is not only working to provide support and guidance for the families of children with this condition;it also wants to tell people that they can also learn from these children.“We want them to come and experience what we learnt from our children,”she says.

Devon Gallagher, a college graduate from Philadelphia, wants the world to know exactly where she's been during her worldwide vacation in a special way.
The traveler, who was born with a bone disease, had her right leg amputated (截肢) at the age of four.Although the amputation caused setbacks for Gallagher early on, she now sees it as nothing short of inspiration for living her best life.
To spread that message, Gallagher has taken to social media, where she shares photos of her travels across the globe, but instead of simply using a geotag (图像地理标签), she writes her location across her artificial leg before taking a picture.
Now she has been taking pictures across the Continent, which show her cycling over the canal in Amsterdam, relaxing on a wall, overlooking the city of Barcelona, posing with a waffle in Brussels, taking in the spectacular Parthenon temple in Athens and enjoying a river cruise in Budapest, all with the wellknown locations written on her artificial leg.
“I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design on it.One day I had a sudden thought to get a chalkboard,”Gallagher said.“My mum and grandmother weren't too keen on the idea, but my friends thought it was great and told me to go for it, so I did.”
Gallagher said people often stare when she's writing on her leg, but once she shares the photos, she receives only positive feedback,“My leg hasn't stopped me from doing anything I've wanted to do,”she said.“I don't know if it's my determination to prove to myself that I can do it, but regardless, I've been able to keep up with my peers and lead a pretty great life.”
Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. And if life gives you an artificial leg, make art.

We live in a world where we want everything instantly. In this instant world it is hard to succeed in anything. To achieve your goal you first have to change your life from instantly to persistently (坚持地).
Persistence is the course you need to set. When you change your expectancy from instantly to persistently you will gain an advantage of time that many do not have.Time works against those who live instantly.Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn't happen instantly people move on to the next thing on their list and consider the current goal a failure.
Persistent people have the advantage of time.It allows them to step back, observe and assess the progress of the goal they are pursuing. Some things take longer to develop;some just need to be left there for a while to find their own way.
When you live instantly you gain and lose instantly. Many times you do not know how you got there or how to get back because it is not repeatable. When you live persistently you learn how things work, how to correct a plan and how to guide it to make it successful. You do not panic because you know you have more than enough time.
Slow down and take time to enjoy the journey. If what you are doing is not fun then stop doing it and do something else.
Everything you do should be in pursuit of a better tomorrow than you had yesterday. You should take time to develop your abilities to reach your goals.Do not get discouraged just because your success is not instant.
Celebrate each step along the way.People who live instantly don't take time to appreciate what they have accomplished. They are just looking for the next thing that they can get instantly.
You must be grateful for the time it takes to reach your goal.Persistence will get you there if you really want to get there.
12.Why will people who want things instantly fail in many things?
A.They want greater efficiency.
B.They don't stick to their goal.
C.They often change their lifestyle.
D.They tend to pursue a higher target.
根据第二段最后一句中的“Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn't happen instantly people move on to the next thing”可以推断出,那些想马上就成功的人太急于求成,对自己的目标不坚持,自然难以成功。故选B。]
13.What's the main advantage persistent people have over instant people?
A.The willpower. B.A target.
C.A plan. D.An opportunity.
故选A。]
14.According to the text, persistent people .
A.focus more on the result
B.work slower than instant people
C.will get rewarded for their efforts
D.don't appreciate what they have done
根据最后一段中的“Persistence will get you there if you really want to get there.”
15.What's the writer's main purpose of writing the text?
A.To blame those who live instantly.
B.To persuade people to live happily.
C.To praise those who have succeeded.
D.To suggest learning the art of persistence.
When Failure Is a Good Thing
Failure is an important process you can learn from.16.
Most people view failure as something that should be avoided at all costs.17. It may have been an “F” we received on a paper or the high expectations our parents placed upon our shoulders that stopped us from trying.
Awardwinning psychologist and author, Ron Friedman, tells the story of how Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, revolutionized the women's clothing industry and became a billionaire in his book, The Best Place To Work: The Art and Science of Creating an Extraordinary Workplace.
18. She had zero experience in the clothing industry, lacked an education in business and raised only $5,000 to invest. When asked where she found the courage, she gave all credit to her dad. While most parents ask their kids,“How was your day?” when sitting down for dinner, Sara's parents asked her and her brother,“What did you fail at today?” each and every night.
When interviewed by CNN's Anderson Cooper, Sara said,“Instead of failure being the outcome, failure became not trying. It forced me at a young age to want to push myself so much further out of my comfort zone.”19. It became more about learning and less about a personal weakness.
If we view failure as weakness, we avoid stepping out of our comfort zone.20. It does not define us, but instead matures us.I'm sure that there are many risks we would all take in our personal, professional and spiritual lives if we could get past a fear of failure.
What has been the greatest lesson you have learned when taking a chance? Please share with us.
A.And, most importantly, it means you tried.
B.Let's take a look at how Sara faced failures.
C.In reality, Sara's father had redefined failure.
D.Early on, Sara overcame a series of difficulties.
E.Instead, we must remind ourselves that failure is an action.
F.It is important to reflect on what can be learnt from failure.
G.We tend to connect failure with a bad experience we had as a child.
17.G [根据上文“Most people view failure as something that should be avoided at all costs.(大多数人认为应该不惜一切代价避免失败)”以及后文“It may have been an ‘F’ we received on a paper or the high expectations our parents placed upon our shoulders that stopped us from trying.(也许是我们的试卷得了个‘F’,或者是父母对我们寄予的厚望阻止了我们去尝试)”可知,人们认为失败是生活中无论如何都要避免的东西,后几句讲述的是我们小时候的一些失败,故推测本句在讲人们对失败的看法,故G选项“我们往往把失败和我们小时候的糟糕经历联系起来”符合语境,故选G。]
18.D [根据后文“She had zero experience in the clothing industry, lacked an education in business and raised only $5,000 to invest. When asked where she found the courage, she gave all credit to her dad. While most parents ask their kids,‘How was your day?’ when sitting down for dinner, Sara's parents asked her and her brother,‘What did you fail at today?’ each and every night.(她在服装行业没有任何经验,没有接受过商业教育,也只筹集到了5 000美元用于投资。
19.C [根据上文“When interviewed by CNN's Anderson Cooper, Sara said,‘Instead of failure being the outcome, failure became not trying. It forced me at a young age to want to push myself so much further out of my comfort zone.’(在接受CNN的安德森·库珀采访时,萨拉说:‘失败并非结果,而是一种不愿尝试的想法。
20.E [根据上文“If we view failure as weakness, we avoid stepping out of our comfort zone.(如果我们把失败看成弱点,我们就不会走出自己的舒适区)”以及后文“It does not define us, but instead matures us.I'm sure that there are many risks we would all take in our personal, professional and spiritual lives if we could get past a fear of failure.(它不能定义我们,反而使我们成熟。

故填How。]
故填be controlled。]
固定短语be faced with表示“面对”,从句的完整形式为:when we are faced with adversity。

43.so/and [考查并列连词。 填so/and。]
用副词作状语修饰介词短语“in a deep well”,constant的副词是constantly,意为“一直,始终”。故填constantly。]

At the beginning, with father holding the back of the bike, I rode happily and safely. After some time, my father told me to ride independently.Though a little scared, I gave it a try.It was tougher than I had expected. After several attempts, I finally rode the bike steadily. At that moment, I felt like I was flying.Whenever I meet with difficulties, this experience inspires me to be courageous and determined.
That's all.Thanks for your listening.

When a tornado (龙卷风) hit a small town nearby, many families were left homeless. Afterward, all the local newspapers carried stories of the families who suffered the hardest to appeal to people's attention and assistance.
One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me.A young woman stood in front of a mobile home, a depressed expression on her face.A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast.Hiding behind her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, wide eyes with confusion and fear. The article below gave clothing sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my sevenyearold twins, Brad and Brett, and threeyearold Meghan to help those less fortunate than themselves.
“We have so much. And these poor people now have nothing,” I said.“We'll share what we have with them.”I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them in the living room.Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods. While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. The boys were pleased to join.Brad rose and went to his room fast.He came back bringing his action figures that he played with not so frequently.Brett also jumped up and ran to fetch some of his Matchbox cars and airplane models.Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up abandoned toys.
The boys placed the objects they had chosen to donate into one of the boxes while I filled the third box with clothes.Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, faded, bestloved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest.“I'll help you find something for the little girl, too.”I said to the little Meghan.
“Mommy, I will give Lucy to them,”Meghan turned to me.
Recognizing what little Meghan's gesture meant, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes.

“Mommy, I will give Lucy to them,”Meghan turned to me.“Oh, honey,”I said.“You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”Meghan nodded seriously, eyes glistening with tears.“Lucy makes me happy, Mommy.Maybe she'll make that little girl happy, too.”She paused in front of the box that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy's flat face, gave her a final kiss, and then laid her gently on top of the other toys. The boys watched, openmouthed, as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box.
Recognizing what little Meghan's gesture meant, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes.I replaced it with the new hunter green jacket that I had bought on sale last week.I believed the young woman in the picture would like it and fit it as much as I did.The boys had also been inspired by our behavior and carried their beloved things. We all wished the family could pass the difficult period as soon as possible and that they would love the things we gave them with all our heart.
