Improvements in technology often happen overnight. Some gadgets get smaller and faster. Others are replaced (代替) by newer things like smartphones. Here are some old gadgets that people used to use.
①
Do you have a landline at home? These are phones that people plug (插入) into their living room walls. Mobile phones didn’t use to be so popular at that time, so most families had a landline. But landlines only worked at home. What did people do when they were outside and needed to call someone? They looked for a pay phone! Then, most people had their own mobile phones and many homes no longer had landlines.
②
People today store plenty of information online, or on SD cards. But in the 1980s and 1990s, people used to use floppy disks. The first floppy disks were large, expensive, and not very useful—each disk could store just 175 KB of information! Later, floppy disks got smaller and better. But even the best ones could only hold 1.44 MB. You would need three or four disks just for one song, and about 22,000 disks to match the storage (储存空间) available on a 32 GB phone!
③
It’s easy to take photos today. People often have thousands just on their phones! But photos used to cost much, and people took fewer of them. To take a photo, you had to buy a roll of film. This allowed you to take up to 30 photos. After finishing the roll, you left it at a shop. The shop developed the photos to make them be seen, which you could collect after a few days.
Technology changes all the time, and the gadgets we use today will one day be old. What do you think will be next to disappear (消失)?

Theo works day and night in the tulip (郁金香) fields in the Netherlands, never saying he is tired. How is this possible?
Theo is a robot named after Theo van der Voort, a farmer at the WAM Pennings farm. His job is to search for sick tulips and, when necessary, kill troubled ones to prevent the virus (病毒) from spreading among the plants. The work is important, especially in spring, when people from around the world come to see the colorful flowers.
There are 45 robots like Theo working in the tulip fields of the Netherlands. They walk in the fields very slowly, about one kilometer per hour, looking for sick tulips. The robots have cameras in the front and take thousands of photos of the tulips. An AI model checks the photos carefully and decides which tulips need to be killed.
In the past, this work was done by humans. Allan Visser’s family has been growing tulips for three generations, and this is the second growing season that Visser has used the robot. He said it is costly—the same as a sports car—about $200,000. “But I like to have the robot better,” Allan said. “Yeah, it is expensive, but there are fewer and fewer people who can really see the sick tulips.”
H2L Robotics is a company that makes the robots. Erik de Jong is the company’s managing director. “With the help of AI, they can locate (确定……的位置) the flowers that need to be taken off. But as for ‘the heart of the robot’,” he said, “It was the knowledge from farmers like Theo van der Voort that they put into the AI model. Combined (结合) the knowledge of experienced tulip farmers with the AI technology, they can finally make efficient (高效的) robots.”
28. Why do farmers use Theo?
A. To help them water tulips. B. To keep tulip fields healthy.
C. To record the growth of tulips. D. To guide tourists to see tulips.
29. What does Allan Visser think of the robot?
A. It is very helpful. B. It costs less than a sports car.
C. It needs to be further improved. D. It is used by most farmers now.
30. What can be inferred (推断) from Erik de Jong’s word?
A. Technology is useful for farmers in raising their skills.
B. Theo van der Voort gets little help from AI technology.
C. Farmers’ knowledge is key to the development of robots.
D. The robots will lead to no tulip farmers in the near future.
31. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To describe an amazing experience. B. To introduce a new AI technology.
C. To advise people how to protect tulips. D. To explain how to plant some tulips.

In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. ____32____.
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future? I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to please him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke, I was thinking, “At university, I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor.”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I asked my sweetheart, Mary, to marry me. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventures in my life. The captain of a ship about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will take, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal!
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said, “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now as strong as a hurricane, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

25. What is the title of each paragraph?
a. Goodbye Disks b. Music to my Ears c. Picture This
d. Call Me e. Film Development
A. ①—d; ②—b; ③—e B. ①—d; ②—a; ③—c
C. ①—c; ②—a; ③—b D. ①—c; ②—b; ③—e
26. What can we get from the passage?
A. No homes had landlines now.
B. Floppy disks could store much information.
C. You could take 40 photos with a roll of film.
D. The improvements in technology change people’s life.
27. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Changing Phones B. The Gadgets of Tomorrow

“Look out!”
