What should we do when having a tough (艰难的) time in life? I can’t give you a textbook answer, but I’d like to share two stories of my childhood (童年). They are about A BOOK that brought me knowledge and A MAN that brought me strength (意志力量).
The book is Xinhua Dictionary. My family lived a tough life, and I had to drop out of school. Back then, children of my age were at school, learning and playing games together, but I didn’t have that luxury (奢华). The good thing is that I got a copy of the Xinhua Dictionary, and it was all I had. Most of the words I knew didn’t come from school. Instead, I learned them by reading the Xinhua Dictionary, which got me through the tough time and prepared me for my writing career.
The man is my grandpa. One day, I got caught in bad weather with Grandpa when we were on the way home with a handcart (手推车) of grass. There were thick clouds overhead, the sky was getting dark, and a heavy storm was coming. The wind got stronger and stronger. I was pushed down to the ground and couldn’t move. Grandpa, however, hung on to the handcart. It seemed that he had no plans to run for cover — he decided to fight against the wind. Then in the strong wind, Grandpa’s legs were shaking, but he didn’t move back. Nor did the handcart. Although the grass was long gone at the end of the day, we still had the handcart.
So, my dear young friends, I want you to remember that when you are having a tough time in life, don’t lose heart. Never let life knock you down (击倒). Even in the hardest situation, there is hope that encourages us to move forward.

The gift card covered almost all of the check (账单). After the meal, I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. I saw two bills (钞票) inside. The first one would be enough to pay the rest of the check. The second one would be enough to pay the check and give the waitress a nice tip. I planned to pick the first one. The organization developed robotic spacecraft to explore the moon.”可知,NASA使用宇宙飞船探索月球,所以②排在③之后;根据“One of the worst accidents in the history of spaceflight happened on January 27,1967. Three astronauts died during a test. After the accident, Webb tried his best to lead the organization to correct all of the problems.”可知,Webb领导NASA纠正了事故的所有问题,所以④排在②之后;根据“In July 1969, nine months after Webb had retired from NASA, Apollo 11’s astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon.”
Another bad day at school?” my father asked as I came into the room.
“How could you tell? I didn’t shut the door heavily or anything,” I replied. Over the past two months I had either done this or thrown my backpack across the room every time I came home from school. Papa thinks it has something to do with moving to a new house.
“I know this move has been hard on you. Leaving your friends and cousins behind is tough,” Papa said, as he put his arm around my shoulder. “What you must remember is that, with a lot of hard work and some time, you will make new friends.”
“You don’t know how hard it is. This year my baseball team would have won the championship. They won’t even give me a chance to pitch (投球) here. All I get to play is right field, and that’s the worst!”
Papa turned toward me. “Things will get better, I promise you. Let me ask you, do you know why you were named David Lorenzo?”
“Yes, your name is David and grandfather’s name is Lorenzo.”
“Very good, and what makes your grandfather so important?”
“He was the first in the family to come to this country and all that,” I answered.
“That is only partly correct. Your grandfather was a very great man. In Mexico, he had been a teacher. When he came to America, he could only get low-paid labor jobs because he didn’t speak the language. It took him two years before he spoke English well enough to be allowed to teach here, but he did it. He never complained because he knew change could be difficult. Did he ever tell you that?” my father asked.
I looked down at my feet, ashamed at my behaviour. “No. That must have been hard,” I said sheepishly.
“Your grandfather taught me that if you let people see your talent, they will accept you for who you are. I want you to always remember what my father taught me, even if it takes a few years for people to see who you are,” said Papa.
All I could say was, “Okay.” Then I asked, “What should I do now?”
Laughing, Papa said, “How about you pitch a few to me? You need some work.”

(24-25九年级上·广东潮州·阶段练习)16-year-old Yang Jun’ao, a student from No. 1 Middle School in Nanxian County, Hunan Province, invented a robot to help harvest lotus roots (采藕).
“I got the idea when I saw my grandmother, in her 70s, working hard to harvest lotus roots under the hot sun,” Yang said. Sometimes, his grandmother would badly hurt her fingers while using harvesting tools.
To make things easier for his grandmother, he decided to invent a robot that could do the job for her.
With the help of his teacher, Hong Wei, Yang spent almost a year building a model of the robot. The robot can move by itself in the muddy fields where lotus roots grow. It uses special technology to distinguish ripe roots by looking at the color of the lotus leaves. Then, its arm carefully cuts the roots without harming them.
While creating the robot, Yang faced challenges like collecting parts for the model, putting them together and using a hot glue gun for connecting. “The first time I used a hot glue gun, my hands were shaking,” Yang laughed. At first, he planned to use rotating blades (旋转叶片) for harvesting lotus roots. But it was hard to find them, so he used more common blades instead.
When Yang showed the robot to his grandmother, she was happy and gave helpful suggestions for improvement. She suggested using a voice player to help locate the robot in thick lotus leaves. “My grandmother’s suggestion reminded me that any invention must be practical to be truly valuable.” said Yang.
Although Yang still needs to make improvements, like finding cheaper materials, his teacher Hong spoke highly of Yang’s creative thinking and resolution to help his hometown.

On the first day of 2nd grade, my father asked me if I could read well. “Yes, I can,” I said. So he gave me a map with street names and directions on how to walk to school. School is 3 miles away, and I had never been off my home street by myself, ever.

After people finish eating fruits, they often throw away the nut (核) inside. But some artists do something different—they collect these nuts and turn them into beautiful art.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters, can be made into beautiful earrings and other artworks,” said Tan Wanhai, the top artist of Weifang nut carving (核雕).

Artists look at nuts carefully to make them into art. “Artists in the past have been wise enough to turn common things into beautiful things. (2024·广东佛山·二模)Before 4th May, China’s National Youth Day This year, great writer Mo Yan wrote a letter to young people. Here is a part of the letter:

I blinked (眨眼睛) to hide my sorrow and was back to the present again. I smiled to the waitress, pushed the smaller bill back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hard-working waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile.

(24-25九年级上·广东江门·期末)“Another bad day at school?” my father asked as I came into the room.

(24-25九年级上·广东汕头·期末)I grew up in a very poor common family. My father used some unusual ways to teach us and rarely spared us from the school of hard lessons. This is the one I value most.
On the first day of 2nd grade, my father asked me if I could read well. “Yes, I can,” I said. So he gave me a map with street names and directions on how to walk to school. School is 3 miles away, and I had never been off my home street by myself, ever.
My father said, “Lily, everything you need to know is written on the map. Read the map and follow the directions.” My father kissed me goodbye and sent me out the door. I was afraid. How could I walk to school alone? On my way to school, I cried as I walked.
I don’t know how long it took for me to get to school, but I do remember how I felt when I came around the last street corner and saw my school. I jumped up and down. I wished I could tell my father that I made it.
My father wasn’t there when I got home and I was asleep when he got home. The next day I waited for him to ask what had happened. He never did. Years later I asked him why he did that and why he didn’t care about what had happened. He just looked at me for a while and then said, “I didn’t have to ask you because I knew. (23-24九年级上·广东河源·期末)My elder sister is a great runner. She runs the 10-kilometer race. She used to be a pretty good sprinter (短跑运动员), but one day all of that changed because of a little mistake she made.
One morning, she went to practice early as usual. She was about to take off her running shoes, when she realized she had forgotten her sprinting shoes. When her coach found out, he got mad. As a punishment, he assigned (命令) her to run with the long-distance (长距离) practice group.
Although my sister was a sprinter, she was able to keep up with the group. The long-distance coach asked the sprinting coach, “Who is that?”
“That’s one of my sprinters,” he said.
As the runners neared the final corner, my sister was in the lead, pulling away from the other runners with ease. The two coaches were shocked by her natural long-distance running ability. Another girl was close to her for a while, but because of her sprinting ability, my sister seemed to just pull away from her. It was her first time to run a long-distance race and she came in first!
From that day on, my sister’s sprinting days were over. She discovered her talent for long-distance running. She works hard and hopes to go to the Olympics one day. Who knows what might happen?

After people finish eating fruits, they often throw away the nut (核) inside. But some artists do something different—they collect these nuts and turn them into beautiful art.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters, can be made into beautiful earrings and other artworks,” said Tan Wanhai, the top artist of Weifang nut carving (核雕).
The history of nut carving might start from the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). During that time, Wang Dayan, the best artist in the Palace Museum, taught people in Shandong Province how to carve nuts. This art of nut carving is so special that the government listed Weifang nut carving as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产) in 2008.
“It’s hard to bring this kind of traditional art to life, so I spent many years working on it.” said Tan, the 48-year-old artist. “Every nut looks different,” Tan added. Artists look at nuts carefully to make them into art. Also, they learn old ways of painting and writing skills to make their work really nice. “In order to show folk (民间的) stories from ancient times, I need to read many books to enrich myself.”
“Artists in the past have been wise enough to turn common things into beautiful things. Recently, thanks to the creative ideas of artists in Weifang, more people in China are starting to like nut carvings,” Tan said. “They make new ways to carve and make sure the art keeps going for future artists.”
