W:That's true. But I do feel hungry.I haven't had any lunch. The last thing I ate was cornflakes early this morning, and it's dinner time now.
M:Well,we must buy a sandwich or something before we get our meal on the plane.
W:Yes,maybe we can spend the last of our British money on some food.It won't be much use to us once we're back in China.
【Text10】
W:We often believe things without even knowing we believe them. For example,in the National Football League,or NFL,teams choose players out of college to play. The biggest part of choosing good players is to watch them play on university teams. But,there is also another part—the NFL Combine. This is a test to check fitness, strength, and, surprisingly, brain power. That's right:Football team managers assess not only players' ability to lift weights and run fast but also their mental abilities. Some roles require much more thinking than others. Can you guess which payers rank the highest? Most people guess the “quarterback”—a position that is like the captain of a team. The quarterback makes plans and throws the ball, and is one of the smallest and quickest players. But,if you guessed this, you're wrong. The players who score highest are usually called "linemen”.They score far above average people.Linemen are also the biggest and strongest players on the team.Their job is to run fast at each other. Therefore, people often consider they are big and stupid. But,the position involves lots of strategy. While the point is not that we should all play football,it is important not to judge people based on appearances. As the NFL Combine shows, our first impressions are often wrong.

由文章第二段中的“ When I want to take a chance on something, they remind me it's not a safe route to take. Taking a more demanding course or trying an activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances of college admission.” 故选A。
第三段第一句“I wish I could tell you that this is an uncommon story, but kids all over the world admit they are under great pressure to be perfect.”
根据第四段中的“In fact, admission officers tend to question students who present themselves as individuals without shortcomings.” 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“If their perspectives are of lessons learned, these applicants tend to jump to the top at highly selective colleges. We believe an error in high school should not define the rest of your life, but how you respond could shape you forever.(如果他们的观点是吸取教训,这些申请者往往会在高度择优录取的大学里跳到顶端。
联想拓展 B 项中“to learn from defeats”为不定式作定语,修饰抽象名词 ability。类似的用不定式作定语的抽象名词还有chance、right、reason、effort、need、way 等。

本段的主旨句“Loosen up and be natural.”
本段的主旨句为“Be positive and optimistic.”。
。设空处之前刚提到“happy people are so happy”,容易让人想到笑。
40.A 主旨句。 根据后面的“Being interesting means doing things you've never done before”和“So try to constantly expand your comfort zone”可知,本段是在告诉我们要拓展自己的舒适区,多进行不同的尝试。

satisfying“令人满意的”;annoying“令人气恼的”;interesting“有趣的”;surprising“令人惊讶的”。
42.A 根据第二段中的“MostSaturdays of my childhood, my father... the local

playground“游乐场”;museum“博物馆”;studio“工作室”;workshop“作坊,车间”。
attentive“专注的”(attentive: listening carefully and with interest ) ; sympathetic“有同情心的; efficient“高效的; characteristic“典型的,独特的”。
49.C根据下文的“like how some items looked like robot arms from a sci-f film"可
big“重大的”; fundamental“根本的,基础的”; fun“有趣的”; practical“实际的”。

set up“创建,建立,开办”;bring in“引人,带来”;win back“嬴回,重新获得”;take over“接管,接手”。

53.C 根据上文的“everything you need for your home, that is”可知,空处内容等同
于everything you need for your home,再结合五金店的定位可知,它提供家中所需的基本物品。alternative“可供选择的事物”;extra“额外的事物”;necessity“必需品”;groceries“食品杂货”。
leisure“闲暇,空闲,休闲”;dream“梦想”;trip“旅行”;world“世界”。
56.titled
主句结构分析:句子主干是It hosted an exhibition。
57.has fueled
从句结构分析:which指代上文的exhibition; how China... for centuries是how 引导的宾语从句,作动词explores的宾语。 故填 has fueled。58. talents
Since the earliest period of European contact with China是介词短语作时间状语;inspiring fashion... fantasy是现在分词短语作结果状语,其中_ fashions. .
59. whose
60.a
Gallery 213 showcases the history of blue-and-white porcelain ,one of.. . features是插入语,其中,the exhibition features是省略了关系词的定语从句;symbol of the lasting...the West是blue-and-white porcelain的同位语。 故填a。61. were brought
Blue-and-white porcelain items___to Europe.developed in Jingdezhen during the Yuan dynasty是过去分词短语作后置定语;as early as the 16th century是时间状语。 故填were brought。
62. popularity
63. Subsequently
64.as
结构分析:so后的分句的主干是a design was the product. that came... typically Chinese为定语从句;of various ... the West是介词短语作定语。 此处为see... as...“把…… 故填as。
65.representing
结构分析:句子主语是This exhibition,is 是系动词,a contemporary design achievement是表语,that shows ...

文章第二段中的“I still tried hard and never gave up despite all these difficulties”暗示作者回到学校后会勇敢面对困难,努力学习。第三段中的“not knowing what the future held for me"暗示作者重回学校后,有了明确的目标,对自己的未来也有了很好的规划。
Suddenly I heard someone knocking on the door. I opened it only to find Megan Hall. She held a bag of groceries, smiling, "I thought you might need a little help."After I invited her in , she helped me prepare a meal, and talked to me about my decision to leave school. Megan's voice was gentle but firm as she spoke about the importance of education. She assured me that challenges are a part of life everyone must face and that I would definitely overcome them with perseverance and support.
With the encouragement from Megan Hall, I agreed to return to school. Back at school, I began to focus on my studies with renewed determination. Gradually, I caught up with my classmates. And my hard work paid off when I received my first improved test score, which boosted my confidence significantly. Encouraged by this success, I continued to persevere, set small and achievable goals and felt more motivated to push forward. This experience taught me that no matter how daunting life's challenges may seem, with the right support and determined spirit, we can overcome obstacles and achieve success.

I ask every student I interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same question, “ What do you look forward to the most in college?" I was astonished and delighted recently when a student replied, “I look forward to the possibility of failure." Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk.
"You see, my parents have never let me fail, " he said. “ When I want to take a chance on something, they remind me it's not a safe route to take.Taking a more demanding course or trying an activity I may not succeed in , they tell me, will ruin my chances of college admission.”
I wish I could tell you that this is an uncommon story, but kids all over the world admit they are under great pressure to be perfect. When I was traveling in China last fall and asked a Chinese student what she did for fun, she replied, “I thought I wasn't supposed to tell you that. I wouldn't want you to think I am not serious about my work!"
Students are usually in shock when I laugh and tell them I never expect perfection. Of course, this goes against everything they've been told. How could a principle of admission at one of America's most selective institutions not want the best and the brightest? The reality is that perfection doesn't exist, and I don't expect to see it in a college application. In fact, admission officers tend to question students who present themselves as individuals without shortcomings.
We get the most excited when we read an application that seems real. It's so rare to hear stories of defeat. If their perspectives are of lessons learned, these applicants tend to jump to the top at highly selective colleges. We believe an error in high school should not define the rest of your life, but how you respond could shape you forever.
24. What can we learn about the student in the first two paragraphs?
A. He is taught not to take risks.
B. He tries to avoid any chance of failure.
C.He cares little about his academic futures.
D.He is seldom allowed to take part in activities.
25.Why does the author mention the Chinese student in paragraph 3?
A.To emphasize the importance of hard work.
B.To compare students from different countries.
C.To give an example of the students he favors.
D.To illustrate the widespread stress on students.
26.What is probably admission officers’ attitude towards a perfect application?
A.Doubtful. B.Confused. C.Favorable. D.Casual.
27.What is the key to success in college according to the author?
A.A desire for perfection.
B.The ability to learn from defeats.
C.The opportunity of making mistakes.
D.An experience of defeat in high school.
C
When it comes to animals that use their noses to smell out crime, most people probably think of police dogs. However, research by an organization called APOPO suggests African giant pouched rats(巨颊囊鼠) could be the next crime-fighting heroes on four legs,
APOPO has already trained the rats to find hidden bombs on the ground , detect illness in humans and locate people buried by earthquakes. Now, it also has taught them to use their powerful noses to tackle the illegal wildlife trade. The illegal wildlife trade is the transport of wildlife across countries' borders to sell them. Criminals disguise an item in lots of ways , including painting it so it looks like wood or cutting it into pieces and coating it in chocolate so it looks like a sweet.
These tricky acts make it hard for humans to detect illegal goods. However,African giant pouched rats can do them a favor. They are particularly well suited to spotting the hidden goods, with a highly developed sense of smell that can tell the difference between lots of scents (气味), and a small body that can fit into tight areas in piles of boxes humans couldn't reach to search properly. And the rats are cheap to train to bring good results.
The rats were taught to associate a clicking sound with a food reward, and then they were put in a container with holes in the bottom, with scent samples below. The researchers wanted the rats to identify certain scents while ignoring others.A rat could point out a certain smell to the researchers by keeping its nose in a hole for three seconds. When the rats chose the right scent, they heard the click sound and were rewarded with food, so they learned which smells to identify over time.
Researchers later tested the rats at a port in Tanzania where they hid items they hoped the rats would find. Each rat wore a tiny cloth with a little ball attached, and when they found something, they pulled on the ball, causing a sound. The rats found more than 83% of the hidden items. Thus, APOPO is now working on sending its “HeroRATS” out to detect real crime.
28.What does the underlined word “disguise” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Pass on. B.Trade in. C.Look over. D.Cover up.
29.Why are the rats considered potential helpers to humans?
A. They have a gift for telling the difference. B.They are well-nosed and cost effective.
C. They have fast-adapting and learning abilities.D.They are highly qualified for medical care.
30.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The food reward system. B.The sound sample collection.
C.Smell association research. D. Scent identification training.
31.Why is the field testing introduced in the last paragraph?
A. To evidence the rats' uniqueness. B.To lead in a new way to detect crime.
C. To support the future application plan. D.To prove the rats' sensitivity to sound.

I would never describe myself as being a cynic(愤世嫉俗者),that is a person who has negative opinions about other people and things people do.While I might be doubtful about our ability to unite and address significant challenges, that's based on evidence. Who wouldn't be concerned when considering the current events we face? That's what I might have argued before I read Jamil Zaki's new book, Hope for Cynics. Afterwards, I felt a sense of pity: I might be part of the problem.
Zaki , a professor of psychology and the director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Lab, presents a picture of cynicism's hold on us. And its potential negative impacts on our future and personal well-being. In 2018, only 32% of the Americans surveyed said that “ most people can be trusted", compared with nearly 50% in 1972. During this process, cynicism has taken root as a response to many challenges.
But , Zaki argues, it's an own goal: expecting the most negative outcomes is self-harming. It weakens our connections with others and discourages us from tackling issues that matter. Say climate crisis. Expecting the most negative outcomes also harms our chances of finding happiness in the here and now. The popular belief that cynies are just smarter and more realistic isn't necessarily justifiable. Zaki points out that cynics perform worse at cognitive (认知)tests and are less effective at identifying untrustworthy people and lies than non-cynics. “200,000 years ago, the people worrying about the dangers on the horizon probably did better than their friend relaxed by the sunset, but now being overly watchful can lead us to overestimate the chances of frightening but rare events," he says.
As a self-described “ recovering cynic” , Zaki has made small but powerful changes in his own life. First, he has become more conscious of cynical thoughts, noticing when he is coming to “unnecessarily cold conclusions” and interrupting them with facts. Tellingly, Zaki has noticed that coming to the conclusions is most common when he's sleep-lacking or stressed: cynicism is a kind of burnout. Zaki also practices what he calls “positive talk”: spreading word, within his circles, of acts of generosity or kindness. I think it is “personal counter-programming" to cynicism.
32.Why did the author initially refuse to be labeled as a cynic?
A. Her doubt made much sense. B. Her view was widely accepted.
C. She disliked such type of person. D. She had great faith in her ability.
33.What may be the cause of cynicism?
A. Burning desires for well-being. B. Decreased faith in each other.
C.Constant emergence of challenges. D.Negative attitudes to the future.
34.Why is it bad for a person to expect the worst?
A. It fuels ignorance of dangers. B. It goes against the popular belief.
C. It discourages realistic thoughts. D. It does damage to our social bonds.
35.What does Zaki's practice of overcoming cynicism suggest?
A. Positive talk promotes kind acts. B.Action speaks louder than words.
C.Minor yet impactful changes matter. D.High mental pressures relate to burnout.

How to Be More Interesting
No one is boring and no one needs to be perfect. But maybe you feel that you are boring and need to be more interesting.36.______ If you're looking to be more interesting, then you've come to the right place.
Loosen up and be natural. One reason why many people fail to become interesting people is that they worry too much over the small things and don't come across as natural. Their effort backfires(产生反作用)on them , because they are just trying too hard. 37.______ Live a life one day at a time.
Be positive and optimistic. Interesting people are happy people. This is one of the reasons why we find them so interesting; whether we admit it or not, we want to know how and why happy people are so happy. 38.______
Build an open personality. Be available to the world and look for excitement instead of waiting for it to find you. Celebrate flexibility and a“just go with it”attitude. Oftentimes people aren't interesting because they are reserved. 39.______ Of course, to some extent, this is true, but you can also take this too far. By holding back too much , you're limiting your potential and in the process of becoming less interesting. The more reserved you get, the more static(停滞的) your life will be.
40. ______ Being interesting means doing things you've never done before and being willing to share those experiences with other people. People who are boring and dull normally possess a very small comfort zone.So try to constantly expand your comfort zone and dare yourself to try new things; this is the quickest path to becoming more interesting.

With a global collection covering over 5,000 years, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the only museum in New York City that can display20th-and 21st-century works in dialogue with art from different centuries and cultures. I was always a quiet and ordinary student in school. During class, 1 often found myself in a really tough situation. Whenever the teachers started teaching, my mind just wandered off. I couldn't listen carefully to what the teachers explained, so I couldn't know what they said, not to mention doing homework. Without doubt , I was falling further and further behind, which made me really worried and depressed.
My parents were out of work these days. I had to take care of my younger brothers after school when my parents occasionally did odd jobs. The combination of academic difficulties and the heavy family burden(负担) created a huge amount of stress, which could have affected my mental health and motivation to learn. I still tried hard and never gave up despite all these difficulties.
However, the last straw(稻草) came when I got the mark in a test one day. It was disastrous. The score was far lower than I had ever expected. I felt like all my efforts were in vain(徒劳).This failure completely ruined my confidence in continuing my education. Therefore, I decided to drop out of school. I told Megan Hall, my headteacher, about this decision with tears in my eyes. Then, with a heavy heart, I left the school before she said something to me, not knowing what the future held for me.
It was early in the spring. There had been a little frost in the night, and a light mist still hung over the woods. When I got home, my younger brothers were sitting beside the table, waiting for something to eat. They stared at the kitchen doorway, hoping for a delicious meal. But as the minutes passed by, suspicion began to emerge. Maybe nothing could come to satisfy their hunger. Now my parents were not at home and what was worse, I couldn't cook a meal for them because there was no food left.注意:

For example, in the national football league or N, F, L, teams choose players out of college to play. The biggest part of choosing good players is to watch them play on university teams, but there is also another part, the N, F, L. combine.
