IV.Read and complete the following tasks. 阅读并完成以下任务。
When it rains heavily, we can say“It's raining cats and dogs.” However,on 29 December 2021, for the people in Texarkana(德克萨卡纳), USA, it was“raining fish”. And no —— this isn't a joke.
On that day, a storm hit the town. It left a lot of small fish on the ground. This may sound like fake (伪造的) news. However, there have been similar reports of such strange weather throughout history. In 2017, people in California, USA, saw fish falling from the clouds over a primary school. In 1921, frogs fell from the sky over a city in Canada. As early as 2,000 years ago, a Roman writer wrote about storms of frogs and fish.
So, how do these strange events happen? According to scientists, they are caused by waterspouts (水龙卷). Waterspouts are tornadoes (龙卷风) that form or travel over open water. The fast wind inside them lifts water up into the clouds. At the same time, some light fish or frogs are lifted up, too. The wind carries the animals and water over the land. When the energy of the wind starts to fall, so do the animals and water. As a result —— yes, you' ve guessed it —— it “rains” animals.
Task 1 Choose the best answer. 选出最恰当的答案。
( )1. What unusual weather event occurred in Texarkana, USA on 29December 2021?

A. a strong wind that blows over land
B. a tornado that forms or travels over open water

( )5. Scientists believe these strange weather events happen because of
A. global warming

C. stars falling to the Earth
D. magic or supernatural forces
Task 2 Read the passage again and complete the conversation with the proper forms of the words from the passage. 再读一遍短文,用文中单词的适当形式补全对话,首字母已给。
A: Hey, did you hear about that crazy weather event in Texarkana?
B: No, I haven't. What happened?
A: Well, instead of saying“It's raining cats and dogs.”, they could have said it was literally“raining fish”. Can you believe it?
B: Fish? That's unbelievable! Are you sure this isn't some kind of joke or (1)f news?
A: I know, but it's real. And this isn't the first time something like this has happened. There are other (2)s reports throughout history.
B: Really? Like what?
A: For example, in 2017, people in California witnessed fish falling from the clouds. Even way back in 1921, (3)f fell from the sky in a Canadian city. There's even a record around 2,000 years ago!
B: Wow, that's quite a long history of unusual weather. So, how does it happen? Is there an explanation for these (4)s events?
A: Yes, (5)s say it's due to waterspouts. These are like tornadoes, but they form over water. The strong winds inside them can lift not just water, but also (6)1 objects such as fish or frogs into the air. Then, when the wind carries the animals and water over land, and its energy starts to dissipate (消散), everything [7]f down.
B: That's fascinating. So, the fish and frogs get caught up in the (8)c and then fall with the rain. It must be quite a sight!
A: Exactly. It's pretty wild, isn't it?
B: Definitely, I would never expect to see something like that.
