B It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War Ⅰ. German, British, and French soldiers already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and fraternized (打得火热) with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front. German troops held Christmas trees up out of the trenches (战壕) with signs, “Merry Christmas.” “You no shoot, we no shoot.” Thousands of troops streamed across a no-man’s land filled with dead bodies. They sang Christmas carols, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared rations, played football, and even roasted some pigs. Soldiers embraced (拥抱) men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if the Generals (将军) forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high. It shocked the high command on either side. Here was disaster in the making: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals on both sides declared this peacemaking to be wrong. Fifteen million would be killed. Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce. On Christmas Day, 1988, a story in the Boston Globe mentioned that a local FM radio host played “Christmas in the Trenches” several times and was surprised by the effect. The song became the most requested recording during the holidays in Boston on several FM stations. “Some callers even telephone the host deeply moved, sometimes in tears, asking, ‘What the hell did I just hear?’” You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It gives us a glimpse of the world as we wish it could be and says, “This really happened once.” It reminds us of those thoughts we keep hidden away, ou of range of the TV and newspaper stories that tell us how trivial (微不足道的) and mean human life is. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really could be different. 24.What is the main idea of the second paragraph? A.Troops celebrated their victories. B.Generals forced their army to fight back. C.Soldiers made peace with their enemies. D.Soldiers decided to give in to their enemies. 25.What would the soldiers’ actions result in according to the passage? A.A fierce war. B.Many deaths. C.A peaceful world. D.Many heroes. 26.Why were the callers in tears? A.They experienced the war. B.They lost loved ones in the war. C.They valued the life in peace. D.They desired to protect their motherland. 27.What do the TV and newspaper stories probably convey? A.Being against wars. B.Cherishing today’s happiness. C.Remembering heroes. D.Showing no respect for life. C Engineers from the University at Buffalo, Fudan University in China, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison have come together with funding from the National Science Foundation to produce an efficient and cost-effective device that purifies drinking water using the world’s most abundant power source-the sun. More than 2, 300 years ago, the philosopher Aristotle described the water cycle. He has explained that water is heated by the sun, evaporates (蒸发) up into the air, condenses (凝结) into drops, and then falls back to the ground, pure and free of pollutants. Professor Qiaoqiang Gan and the other engineers created a method of purifying water that builds upon Aristotle’s ancient observations. Gan’s team invented a solar water purifier that is a modern version of an evaporative solar still. This device looks like the roof of a tent, with strips of carbon-coated paper covering the top so that the paper strip hangs down on the sides. The ends of the paper strip dip into a water container at the bottom. Gradually, the water in the container is absorbed by the paper. When the black carbon coating on the paper is heated by the sun, the wet paper begins to dry. During evaporation, salt, dirt, bacteria, and other pollutants are trapped in the paper. As the temperature cools, water droplets begin to condense on the surface of the paper. The purified water is collected in a clean container and is ready to drink. There are a few key advantages of the solar water purifier. First, the device is quick and efficient. The solar still can generate up to 5 gallons of clean water daily, which is enough to provide sufficient drinking water for a family. Furthermore, this solar water purifier is cheaper than other water-purification devices because it is made with inexpensive and widely available materials. There are also disadvantages in terms of the adaptation to diverse environments on Earth and the building up of salt in the process. Currently, the engineers are working to make their purifier available worldwide. Soon, drinkable water will be purified and accessible where it is needed. 28.Why does the author mention Aristotle and the water cycle in the text? A.To catch readers’ attention and interest. B.To add more authority to the new invention. C.To show the history of the solar water purifier. D.To help illustrate the basic working principles of the invention 29.What is the main function of the carbon-coated paper? A.To cover the top. B.To collect clean water. C.To hang down on the sides. D.To absorb water and heat from the sun. 30.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A.What the researchers have done. B.How the solar water purifier works. C.What the solar water purifier can do. D.How similar Aristotle’s observation is to the purifier. 31.What might the author think of the future of the solar water purifier? A.Dark. B.Uncertain. C.Promising. D.Unpredictable. D Have you ever had a food that you tasted and you immediately disliked? Maybe it was broccoli, dark chocolate, or cottage cheese. Maybe you were “encouraged” to try the food again, and then one of those times you actually liked it. Many people have had this experience. While tastes are developed at a young age, they can be changed, which depends on a person’s desire to try. Researchers at the University of Birmingham released a study that showed people have a flavor window. The flavor window is open for four-to-six-month-old babies. During this time, it is easier to get babies to try a food they have not previously tasted. As they grow up, the flavor window slowly closes, leaving most of them dubious of new foods. However, the flavor window closing at a young age doesn’t mean it can’t be reopened. A study found that if babies are introduced to a new food 5 to 10 times, they can grow to like it. That amount goes up as children grow older. Ultimately, the study came to the conclusion that the flavor window may never be completely shut. Being willing to try a new food repeatedly is necessary to open a person’s flavor window again. Each attempt will lessen the natural unwillingness of something new. Eventually, “not bad” can turn into “pretty good”. One method for inspiring courage to try new foods multiple times is testing different ingredients. Adding an ingredient-sugar or salt, perhaps-that one enjoys, might make an unappealing food more appealing. Once the person has trained him or herself to like the food, the added ingredient may not be necessary. Overcoming a dislike of a particular food requires tasting a food in different ways and at different times. In spite of strange smells, odd textures, or distinctive flavors, a person has the ability to acquire a true liking for even the most unique and unusual foods. So don’t give up-you never know when you might surprise yourself and discover that broccoli is your new favorite food! 32.What does the study find about babies? A.Babies are naturally unwilling to try new foods. B.Babies develop a favorite food if they eat that food many times. C.Babies are more likely to accept new foods when the flavor window is open. D.Babies who are not exposed to new foods will experience a narrow flavor window. 33.What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean? A.Greedy. B.Doubtful. C.Impatient. D.Bored. 34.Why does the author include paragraph 4 in the text? A.To explain how adding sugar or salt improves the taste of foods B.To highlight that there is no reason why people stop trying new foods. C.To warn that people may have difficulty preparing new foods properly. D.To suggest that people can expand their flavor preferences with time and effort. 35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Don’t give up on broccoli. B.Try new foods before it is too late. C.Ways to reopen your flavor window. D.A new study about your eating habits. High school can be an exciting yet challenging experience for many students. It was a necklace with shining pearls. But the price, five dollars would buy almost a week’s groceries for his family. Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora, who struggled to feed and clothe her five children. Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “Once we went to New York, my mum saw a same one. I know she liked it very much, because she fixed her eyes on it. I will buy it for her. But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?” “I’ll try,” the shop owner smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on such good-looking but costly things. It should keep for a while. ” Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He had made up his mind to raise the five dollars and not tell anybody. Hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea. He discovered that he could collect the hessian sacks (麻袋) thrown away in the street and sell them back for five cents a piece. Every day after school, Reuben walked down the town, collecting the hessian sacks. On the day when summer holiday began, no student was more delighted than Reuben. Now he would have more time for his “work”. All summer long, Reuben kept on his secret task. Soon the leaves fell and the winds blew cold. Reuben wandered in the streets, diligently searching for his hessian treasures. Often, he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window supported him. Eventually, the time had come! It was Mothers’ Day. He poured the coins out and began to count. Then he counted again. He made it! He made it! 根据第二段“They sang Christmas carols, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared rations, played football, and even roasted some pigs. Soldiers embraced (拥抱) men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if the Generals (将军) forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high. (他们唱圣诞颂歌,交换家乡亲人的照片,分享口粮,踢足球,甚至烤猪。士兵们拥抱了几小时前还试图杀死的人。他们同意,如果将军们强迫他们开枪,并把目标定得很高,他们就互相警告。)”可知,本段主要介绍了士兵们与敌人讲和、休战。故选C。 25.细节理解题。根据第三段“Generals on both sides declared this peacemaking to be wrong. Fifteen million would be killed.(双方的将军们都宣称这种和平斡旋是错误的。1500万人将会死亡。)”可知,士兵的行动会导致许多人死亡。故选B。 26.细节理解题。根据第五段“You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It gives us a glimpse of the world as we wish it could be and says, “This really happened once.”(你大概可以猜到为什么打电话的人哭了。圣诞节休战的故事与我们所接受的关于人的大部分教育相违背。它让我们看到了我们希望的世界,并说,“这真的发生过一次。”)”可知,打电话的人都哭了是因为他们珍惜和平生活。故选C。 27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“It reminds us of those thoughts we keep hidden away, ou of range of the TV and newspaper stories that tell us how trivial (微不足道的) and mean human life is. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really could be different. (它让我们想起那些被我们隐藏起来的想法,以及那些告诉我们人类生活是多么琐碎和卑鄙的电视和报纸故事的范围。这就像听到我们内心深处的愿望真的是真的:世界真的可以改变。)”可推断,电视和报纸的故事可能传达的是反对战争的信息。故选A。 C Engineers from the University at Buffalo, Fudan University in China, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison have come together with funding from the National Science Foundation to produce an efficient and cost-effective device that purifies drinking water using the world’s most abundant power source-the sun. 根据第二段“More than 2, 300 years ago, the philosopher Aristotle described the water cycle. He has explained that water is heated by the sun, evaporates (蒸发) up into the air, condenses (凝结) into drops, and then falls back to the ground, pure and free of pollutants. (2,300多年前,哲学家亚里士多德描述了水循环。他解释说,水被太阳加热,蒸发到空气中,凝结成水滴,然后落回地面,纯净无污染物。)”可知,提到亚里士多德是为介绍太阳能净水设备的基本工作原理。故选D项。 29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Gradually, the water in the container is absorbed by the paper. When the black carbon coating on the paper is heated by the sun, the wet paper begins to dry. (逐渐地,容器中的水被纸张吸收。当纸张上的黑碳涂层被太阳加热时,湿纸开始干燥。)”可知碳涂层纸的主要功能是吸水和吸收太阳的热量。故选D项。 30.主旨大意题。根据第三段中“The ends of the paper strip dip into a water container at the bottom. (纸条的末端浸入底部的水容器中。逐渐地,容器中的水被纸张吸收。当纸张上的黑碳涂层被太阳加热时,湿纸开始干燥。在蒸发过程中,盐、污垢、细菌和其他污染物被困在纸张中。随着温度的降低,水滴开始凝结在纸张表面。)”可知,本段重要讲述了新发明的净水器是怎么工作的,故选B项。 31.推理判断题。根据最后一段内容“Currently, the engineers are working to make their purifier available worldwide. Soon, drinkable water will be purified and accessible where it is needed.” D Have you ever had a food that you tasted and you immediately disliked? 根据第二段中“During this time it is easier to get babies to try a food they have not previously tasted.(在这段时间里,更容易让婴儿尝试他们以前没有尝过的食物。)” 根据第二段中“As they grow up, the flavor window slowly closes, leaving most of them dubious of new foods. (随着他们的成长,味觉窗口慢慢关闭,让他们中的大多数人对新食物持怀疑态度。)”可知,随着婴儿长大,味觉窗口逐渐关闭,他们对没有尝过的食物就不再容易接受,保持怀疑的态度。所以划线单词意思是“怀疑的”,故选B项。 34.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Being willing to try a new food repeatedly is necessary to open a person’s flavor window again. Each attempt will lessen the natural unwillingness of something new. Eventually, “not bad” can turn into “pretty good”. He made it! Exactly five dollars, not a cent more, not a cent less. Holding the money in hands tightly, Reuben headed for the shop. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mother opened the box carefully, and a shining necklace appeared. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】参考范文: Holding the money in his hands tightly, he headed for the shop. “I’ve got the money!” Reuben declared to the shop owner. The man put the necklace into a delicate box, wrapped it in brown paper, and then placed the box in Reuben’s hands. Holding the box, Reuben’s eyes glittered with joy. After exchanging goodbyes with the shop owner, Reuben rushed home to surprise his mother. “Mom! It’s for you!” Reuben exclaimed as he ran to her side. He placed the box in her hand. Mother opened the box carefully, and a shining necklace appeared. She couldn’t believe her eyes. She took the pearl necklace out and cautiously put it on, tears of happiness beginning to blur her vision. Dora had never received such a precious gift. It was the best Mothers’ Day gift she had ever received. Yes, she was indeed not rich, but she was indeed happy. With tears rolling down her weather- beaten face, she smiled and scooped her son into her arms. 词汇激活 行为类 ①说:declare/say ②放置:place/put ③赶回家:rush home/hurry home 情绪类 ①喜悦:joy/happiness ②高兴的:happy/pleased 【点睛】【高分句型1】“Mom!
