第一节
Dear Mike,
Learning that you are not used to the Chinese meals at school and that you have been eating snacks as a replacement, I’m worried that they couldn’t supply enough nutrition and energy, which would be very bad both physically and academically for you.
I am wondering whether you have noticed that our school provides delicious bread and pizza for breakfast. You can buy more and save them for lunch. In the evening, you can go home with me. Surrounded by a big family, you’ll find it much easier to get used to Chinese food. Please take my invitation seriously.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 One possible version:
From the second day on, I got up one hour earlier than before. I started delivering newspapers in the neighborhood, hoping to earn some extra money to ease my mom’s burden. The early mornings were cold and lonely, but the thought of helping my family kept me going. Each day, I would ride my bike through the streets, delivering papers to eager readers. It wasn’t much, but it was something. And every little bit counted in our struggling family.
Opening the mailbox, I took out the envelope in it and turned around to leave. As I was about to step away, I noticed something unusual, which was another envelope. Opening it, I found a stack of cash and a note. The note read, “To Alice, thank you for your kindness and hard work. I was the man you served soup to the other day. Your family’s resilience and your willingness to help moved me deeply. Please take this as a small token of my gratitude.” I couldn’t believe that my small act of kindness had led to such a generous reward. It was a reminder that even in the toughest times, a little bit of compassion and hard work can go a long way.

The sun had yet to come up in Edmonton, Alberta, and it was more than 20 degrees below zero. Tanis Smith put on her clothes anyway, ready to run up and down hundreds of stairs among the trees in the Saskatchewan River Valley. When she arrived at 6 a. m. , 10 other people joined her. It wouldn’t be the last time they risked freezing their feet off to get in a workout before the rest of the world wakes up.
“You’re pretty much just putting everything on, leaving only your eyes uncovered. So if you look at the pictures, it is hard to know who you are unless you remember what you were wearing,” said Tanis.
Since that winter of 2013, Tanis has rarely missed a workout with the group, called November Project, a network of free outdoor group exercise classes. No matter the month or weather, participants roll out of bed before dawn at least once a week and protect their faces from the freezing cold.
Workouts in the classes begin with easy sports. To show the idea that exercise can be interesting, they include Easter egg hunt, an event you play in your childhood. In the game, you search for plastic eggs. Open them to find commands (指令) that could be, walk like a monkey, or pull grass.
Members are advised to find a workout teammate. They make a promise to show up, and there is a sense of letting down your teammates if you don’t.
“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing,” Tanis said. The cloth should breathe freely and take in sweat, which will help keep you warm and dry. Avoid cotton, which keeps sweat in contact with your body and will make you colder. And add a top wind-breaking jacket.
One of the things Tanis appreciates most about the project is its social part. She called it “a chosen family” that was formed partly because they were having fun while exercising.
24. Why is it hard for the author to recognize herself in the pictures?
A. It is too dark to see clearly. B. She dresses the same way as others.
C. She was almost completely covered. D. It was too cold to take a good picture.
25. Why is Easter egg hunt included in the sports?
A. To help warm up. B. To add fun.
C. To attract more kids. D. To get more exercise.
26. What is the advantage of having a workout teammate?
A. Learning more sport skills. B. Avoiding giving up halfway.
C. Increasing the variety of workout. D. Becoming better at communication.
27. What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. Tips on choosing clothing. B. Importance of keeping warm.
C. Influence of weather on sports. D. Points about doing sports safely.

British fire-fighters are fighting against the worst wildfire they have seen. They called it a “mega-fire”. Eight different fires combined an hour’s drive north of London.
Professor Blair, an environmental research expert at the University of London, said that the wildfires mainly resulted from a combination of drought (干旱), high temperatures, and strong winds. Climate change had also been identified as a contributing factor, with Britain growing hotter and hotter, drier and drier in recent years.
The number of wildfires was well above the long-term average last year, continuing a trend in place since 2022. Several destructive fires have occurred this year. Seventy-five large fires, covering at least six hectares (公顷), were recorded last year, according to analysis of data going back to 2008 by the London School of Economics (LSE). In 2018, 17 large fires were recorded. This increased to 74 in 2020, then 97 in 2021 and 138 a year later. Separate numbers got by Lord Botham, the former England cricketer, show a relevant increase in carbon dioxide emissions (二氧化碳排放) from wildfires from 294,000 tons in 2019 to 1,363,000 tons in 2023.
“While once there would be a big fire year every few years, now it is becoming yearly,”Dr Botham, another professor in environmental geography, told the reporter,“We need to be prepared for more flammable landscapes. This preparation has already started. Professional wildfire teams have been appointed in fire and rescue services up and down the country.”
He added that firefighters in Britain were learning from those in Spain, South Africa and the US, which currently face a fire risk that we might see in the coming decades.
Although the recent ban on single-use barbecues in parts of Dorset and Hampshire would help, the limitations should extend to sky lanterns and fireworks.
28. What caused the fires according to Professor Blair?
A. Hot weather and heavy rainfall.
B. High temperatures and wet weather.
C. Extreme weather and climate change.
D. Strong winds and increasing pressure.
29. How does the author tell the terrible results caused by wildfires?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By interviewing experts.
30. What can we infer from Dr Botham’s statements?
A. Wildfires happened yearly in the past.
B. Continual wildfires led to full preparations.
C. Firefighters in Britain are better trained than those in Spain.
D. Professional wildfire teams will join fire and rescue services.
31. Which has the similar meaning to the underlined word “extend”?
A. Enlarge. B. Experiment. C. Relate. D. Explore.

If you’re thinking about growing apples, now is the time to test different kinds and talk with local growers. This advice comes from gardening writer Lee Reich. His books include The Pruning (修剪) Book and Weedless Gardening. Reich grows an apple called Hudson’s Golden Gem, and he does so for one reason—the taste. He says the fruit’s wonderful taste makes it truly special.
When you buy apples at the store, your choice is limited to the 12 or more kinds available for sale. Gardeners, however, have more choices. They can plant any of more than 5,000 different kinds of apples.
Gardeners can also harvest their apples just as each kind reaches its moment of perfection. Reich says his Macoun apples taste much better than any Macoun apples found in stores. One reason is that his can be left to ripen until they nearly fall off the tree.
Here are some other flavorful apples to plant. The Ashmead’s Kernel apple was first grown more than 200 years ago in a garden belonging to Dr. Ashmead in Gloucester, England. The apple has a reddish, golden brown color. Inside, it has tasty, sharp flesh. Cox’s Orange Pippin is another old apple from England. It was first grown by Richard Cox in 1825. This apple’s orange and red color makes it unpopular in the American market. But it is loved for its strong taste. Ellison’s Orange is another British apple that came from Lincolnshire in 1911. It is a late summer or early autumn apple, golden yellow with stripes, with juicy flesh.
Before you run out to buy trees to grow the kinds you love to eat, Reich does have a warning: Apples are not easy to grow in many parts of the country. The plants require yearly pruning and insect control. But if you’re willing to learn how to keep the unwanted insects away, a few kinds of trees chosen for their taste will give you years of good eating.
32. What can we infer about Lee Reich?
A. He is a teacher. B. He loves planting.
C. He grows a very rare kind of flower. D. His books are about how to sell trees.
33. Why are Reich’s Macoun apples tastier than those in the store?
A. They are naturally ripe. B. They are planted in the garden.
C. They have been picked out carefully. D. They are advanced products.
34. How many types of apples are mentioned in the text?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
35. What do you need to do in planting apple trees according to the last paragraph?
A. Water enough. B. Read many relative books.
C. Pay attention to light and nutrition. D. Prune the trees and remove insects.

第二节 (满分25分)

Two years ago, when I was in high school, my family had a tight budget. We could hardly make ends meet. We would go to yard sales all the time, buying everyday supplies at a low price. It was hard for our family to buy food for the family every day, so my parents worked at the soup kitchen supported by a charity organization so that they could eat there 4 nights a week for free. And they could also bring us kids to eat there. Every weekend, I would also work there.
One day, I was serving the soup for people in line. It was a new man’s turn. When I passed him the bowl of soup, he asked me what my name was. I told him I was named Alice. He gave me a gentle smile and then left.
When I finished my work, I tried to find that man everywhere, but I could find him nowhere. I asked other people working in the kitchen if they had seen him. But no result.
That day, before I left the soup kitchen, I met the gateman. I mentioned that new man to him. He thought for a few seconds, and then he said he guessed the man I mentioned was Mr. Smith, who used to live in this town. His family was poor, fortunately, they were supported by some kind people and he was able to get a chance to go to college. But he seldom came back ever since.
Later that night, my mom was crying. She said the rent on our apartment had gone up and she also needed to pay for the education fee for the four kids. But she was not able to afford all the money. I comforted her. I promised I would help earn some more money in my spare time.
