Natalie Doan, 14, has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. Living just a few blocks from the beach, Natalie can see the ocean and hear the waves from her house. “It’s the ocean that makes Rockaway so special,” she says.
On October 29, 2012, that ocean turned fierce. That night, Hurricane Sandy attacked the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard. Fortunately, Natalie’s family escaped to Brooklyn shortly before the city’s bridges closed.
When they returned to Rockaway the next day, they found their neighborhood in ruins. Many of Natalie’s friends had lost their homes and were living far away. All around her, people were suffering, especially the elderly. Natalie’s school was so damaged that she had to temporarily attend a school in Brooklyn.
In the following few days, the men and women helping Rockaway recover inspired Natalie. Volunteers came with carloads of donated clothing and toys. Neighbors devoted their spare time to helping others rebuild. Teenagers climbed dozens of flights of stairs to deliver water and food to elderly people trapped in powerless high-rise buildings.
“My mom tells me that I can’t control what happens to me,” Natalie says. “but I can always choose how I deal with it.”
Natalie’s choice was to help. She created a website page, matching survivors in need with donors who wanted to help. Natalie posted information about a boy named Patrick, who lost his baseball card collection when his house burned down. Within days, Patrick’s collection was replaced.
In the coming months, her website page helped lots of kids: Christopher, who received a new basketball; Charlie, who got a new keyboard. Natalie also worked with other organizations to bring much-needed supplies to Rockaway. Her efforts made her a famous person. Last April, she was invited to the White House and honored as a Hurricane Sandy Champion of Change.
Today, the scars (创痕) of destruction are still seen in Rockaway, but hope is in the air. The streets are clear, and many homes have been rebuilt. “I can’t imagine living anywhere but Rockaway,” Natalie declares. “My neighborhood will be back, even stronger than before.”
8. When Natalie returned to Rockaway after the hurricane, she found ________.

Museums have regained their popularity among young people because of the widespread of social media, but one person shared on Twitter that people shouldn’t use such ways for their photos. Milo Atienza Parada, an Instagram user, said that people have been going to museums for the sake of taking selfies (自拍) to be posted on their social media. Although there is nothing wrong with it, he still thinks that museums are places of art appreciation (欣赏).
Last month, the National Museum of the Philippines opened its newest building to the public — the National Museum of Natural History. It houses the country’s collections of plants and animals. According to its Facebook post, visitors are not allowed to engage in photography. They are also not allowed to take videos or touch museum objects. However, Parada has noticed that many people have been touching artworks during their visit. Besides, the museum has been turned into a place to take photos.
“For visitors who only wish to enjoy artworks, taking selfies bothers them,” said Parada. “They will feel angry when seeing some people taking selfies with great artworks they want to enjoy.”
But some museums are now accepting the selfie phenomenon (现象). The Artists’ Network shared that the popularity of selfies is an important factor in making people visit museums. The Frick Collection in New York City allows people to take selfies with the artworks. “If they share those images on social media, museums will get a much appreciated ‘word of mouth’ result. Search for information about museum selfies on the Internet and you’ll be surprised by all the fun ways people put themselves and objects of art and history together. And most importantly, that makes other people want to visit these museums in person,” Heidi Rosenau, the Frick’s communication director said.
12. Why have museums regained popularity among young people?
A. Because of the new buildings of museums.
B. Because of social media.
C. Because there are more artworks to appreciate.
D. Because people like taking photos in museums.
13. What can’t visitors do in the National Museum of Natural History in the Philippines?
A. Appreciate the country’s collections of plants and animals.
B. Share their visiting experiences on social media.
C. Take photos, videos or touch museum objects.
D. Enjoy the artworks in the museum.
14. What does the underlined word “houses” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. Stores. B. Protects. C. Builds. D. Sells.
15. What does Heidi Rosenau think of museum selfies?
A. They are a waste of time.
B. They make the museum crowded.
C. They help museums get more visitors.
D. They make the artworks less valuable.

There’s a boy named Tom who had a large family, happily living with his sisters, parents and grandmother. His grandmother loved everyone a lot and was respected by all family members. She was very old, yet sometimes she would recall things from her past and share with them. Sometimes they would believe her but at other times they would think that Granny might be mixing up the facts due to her old age.
One day, when Tom was in school, suddenly while knitting (编织), Granny remembered something and she couldn’t contain her emotions so she got up to tell her son—Tom’s father. She walked as fast as she could to his room and said, “You always asked about my birth date but do you know today is the day when I was born.”
She looked at her son with an excited expression, expecting an immediate response. However, her son wondered how she could remember her date of birth in this old age when she forgot so many other things, so he didn’t pay much attention to this. Disappointed at her son’s reaction, Granny then went to Tom’s mother and Tom’s sister, but like Tom’s father, nobody believed her.
Disheartened, she went and sat in the terrace (阳台). When Tom returned from his school, he found his grandmother sitting alone with a sad expression. Tom asked his granny about the matter, but she said there was nothing to worry about. After a lot of persuasion she said what was troubling her—nobody seemed to care that it was her birthday today!
After hearing what Granny said, Tom thought of a plan. Purely by chance, some of Tom’s friends were playing nearby so he shared his plan with them.

“For visitors who only wish to enjoy artworks taking selfies bothers them,” said Parada.

【37题详解】
考查连词。句意:在巴基斯坦、中国、日本、韩国以及远东的其他国家,它仍然是一项受欢迎的爱好。根据语境可知,此处列举国家,“in Pakistan, China, Japan, Korea”和“in other countries of the Far East”是并列关系,用并列连词and连接。故填and。

【42题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:1752年,本杰明·富兰克林用风筝来证明闪电是一种电的形式。“use...to do...”是固定搭配,意为“用……来做……”,空处需填动词不定式。故填to prove。
【43题详解】

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Tom’s friends were all glad to help him with his plan.

Tom’s granny was so happy, with tears of joy shining in her eyes.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Tom’s friends were all glad to help him with his plan. With Tom acting as the director, stage designer and host, preparation for a performance stage was soon finished. Afterwards, a series of eye-catching performances, ranging from dancing, crosstalk, acrobatics and magic tricks were given by Tom’s friends. By this time, the audience had expanded from granny to the whole family, all of whom gave thunderous applauses to the carefully staged shows. Towards the end, a huge banner saying “Happy Birthday, granny!”was put up on the central stage, which pushed the warm and loving atmosphere to its peak.
Tom’s granny was so happy, with tears of joy shining in her eyes. “For all my life, I have…never spent....my birthday with so many…relatives and lovely kids. Thank you, Tom and all of your kids.” Granny stammered, choking up with gratitude and bliss. “Never mind, granny!” Tom grinned, knowing deep down that the real reason for granny’s tears was not the party itself, but love, care and trust from her family members, which she believed were gone when they reacted indifferently to her ‘made-up’ birthday.
