Almost every day, we learn of disasters of one form or another through the media. These include not just major disasters that affect large areas for a long time. A severe storm, an electric power breakdown, or a house fire can bring a personal disaster to an individual. This brochure aims to help you develop your personal preparedness plan.
Stockpiling food and drink
●Drinking is more important than eating. Keep about 14 liters of liquid per person in stock for each week.
●No experiments. Your supplies should mainly consist of food and drink that you normally have.
●Ensure that your supplies can be stored for long periods of time without refrigeration and that most of them can be eaten cold.
Electric power breakdown
●Keep a supply of torches and candles, as well as spare batteries, matches or lighters in the house. Remember that batteries do not last indefinitely. Regularly use the batteries up and replace them.
●You can prepare smaller meals on a camping stove, one that can be operated through the use of charcoal or gas.
Emergency pack
●The aim of a disaster supplies kit should be to help you to cope with the possibility of having to exist for a few days outside of your house. Don’t take more for each family member than could be conveniently contained within the confines of a rucksack. A rucksack is more practical than a suitcase, as it allows you to have both hands free.
●The emergency rucksack should contain these items
—First aid materials, personal medication
—Food for two days in dust-proof packaging
—Water bottle, cutlery and crockery
—Sleeping bag or blanket
—Hygiene products for a couple of days
●The correct clothing
—Waterproof clothing and shoes
—Masks or damp cloths that you can hold in front of your mouth in the event of danger from chemical substances.
Keep up-to-date in an emergency
Floods or heavy snowfalls may lead to parts of the population getting cut off from the outside world. Information and warnings are important for survival. Those who are trapped can often only be reached by radio, television or the Internet. However, television and the Internet only work when there is electric power, which could fail. This leaves just the radio as the main warning device. Therefore, always keep a battery-powered radio or a wind-up (用手柄操作的) radio in the house.

Ann Smith didn’t set out to choose farming. But it chose her.
She grew up on a five-acre farm in Houston’s Sunnyside neighborhood that her parents purchased when she was just three years old, and credits many of her life lessons to the time she spent outdoors simply observing things. She remembers watching a bird build a nest as an inquisitive seven-year-old. She learned patience as the nest gradually grew bigger over time.
She didn’t know then that many of those childhood lessons would apply to her life now as a full-time farmer and entrepreneur
Now at 27, she owns that same land that she grew up on but has repurposed it into a farm and vegetable garden aimed at creating sustainable, healthy food access for neighborhood communities.
Ann Smith started Ivy Leaf Farms in August 2020. At her farm, she grows broccoli, carrots, cabbage, onions, garlic, pumpkin, peppers, among other organic produce, and delivers for free to local residents. The farm also sells seeds for self-growers and hosts various plant pop-up events in a few community gardens, including some at local schools to encourage the next generation of farmers.
Starting the farm in the early stages of the pandemic was a “leap of purpose,” said Ann Smith. She traded in her lab coat as a doctor for muddy boots and dirty jeans to produce food full-time.
Although she’s not directly in the hospital anymore, she’s still in the business of public health. “Food is public health and we hope to solve some of the issues that we do face in the neighborhood through food and community wellness, greenspaces, and mental health awareness,” she said.
Ann Smith said her biggest challenge transitioning from her nine-to-five to a full-time business owner was breaking the news to her mom, who thought she was crazy to leave her corporate job to dig holes.
But aside from convincing her mom, she said, she had to mentally move past the standards by which success traditionally gets defined in society, which includes going to a decent school, getting a job with a given company and then, years later, retiring from that company.
“It took a lot for me to realize that, yes, I am digging holes. Yes, I am dirty 90 percent of the time, but I’m happy and realizing that my happiness comes from doing this work,” she said. “And then everything else just started effortlessly flowing once I realized that.”
4. What effect did Ann Smith’s experience of growing up on a farm have on her?
A. It inspired her to work in public health. B. It helped her become an expert on birds.
C. It paved the way for her career as a farmer. D. It made her realize the significance of food safety.
5. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about the Ann Smith’s farm?
A. Main products. B. Business model.
C. Target customers. D. Background information.
6. What difficulties did Ann Smith meet when she gave up her job to become a farmer?
①Lack of support of her mother. ②Lack of professional knowledge of farming.
③Difficulty in overcoming worldly prejudices. ④Disapproval from the hospital to her resignation.
A. ③④ B. ①② C. ②④ D. ①③
7. Which of the following words can describe Ann Smith’s attitude to farming?
A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Passionate. D. Ambiguous.
C
For the entirety of my adult life, I have tried to avoid driving. I could claim all sorts of noble reasons for this: concern about the environment, a desire to save money, the health benefits gained from walking or biking.
But the main reason is that I’m anxious.
Then came the pandemic. After more than a year in our Manhattan neighborhood, my family of three was longing for new surroundings. So, I booked lodging in the Adirondacks, about a three-hour drive from New York City, and - for the first time in my life - signed up for formal driving lessons.
On that first day, I arrived queasy, muscles tensed and brain on high alert. My instructor, however, told me something that nobody ever had: “The fear never leaves you. You have to learn to make use of it.”
The idea that I did not need to completely erase my anxiety was freeing. Having some anxiety - especially when faced with a stressful situation - is not necessarily bad and can actually be helpful, experts say.
Anxiety is an uncomfortable emotion, often fueled by uncertainty. Too much anxiety can create intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear, not just about stressful events but also about everyday situations. However, according to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, a theory that originated in the early 20th century from experiments on mice, a certain degree of anxiety can help people anticipate obstacles and stay organized.
Seth Gillihan, a psychologist in Philadelphia, used to feel anxious before starting his workday. At the time, he focused on managing his anxiety rather than examining what was causing it, and eventually realized that the anxiety itself was not the problem. As a result, he cut back his clinic hours and spent additional time writing and podcasting, two of his passions. Now, Gillihan is grateful that he listened to what his body was trying to tell him rather than trying to suppress those feelings.
Furthermore, anxious people tend to be careful and cautious. They can channel those tendencies into conscientiousness. Alice Boyes, the author of The Anxiety Toolkit, was the kind of kid who was always having stomachaches before sports events at school. As she grew up, Boyes continued to worry about things going wrong, but she also started making contingency (应变的) plans. Being prepared for unforeseen events helped to calm her fears and reduce the likelihood of any worst-case scenarios.
In my case, preparing ahead of time was what eventually gave me the confidence to drive upstate. It took eight driving lessons, a nervous last-minute text to my instructor, and a rental car with advanced safety features. Finally, my family packed up and set off.
“Mama is a driver!” my four-year-old daughter exclaimed from the back seat.
“That’s right !” I replied, starting to feel a glimmer of pride. “I am.”
8. What was the main reason why the author had tried to avoid driving before the pandemic broke out?
A. She had never taken formal driving lessons.
B. She thought it unnecessary to make a road trip.
C. She was afraid of being involved in an accident.
D. She felt responsible for protecting the environment.
9. What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Safe and sound. B. Nervous and concerned.
C. Thrilled and delighted. D. Worn out and frustrated.
10. What does the example of Seth Gillihanin in the text tell us?
A. The possibility of changing anxiety into a positive force.
B. The benefits of totally erasing anxiety through treatments.
C. The need to suppress anxious feelings to achieve one’s goals.
D. The significance of avoiding stressful situations to deal with anxiety.
11. What might be the best title of this text?
A. The Way of Driving B. The Truth About Anxiety
C. The Disadvantages of Feeling Anxious D. The Way to Overcome Obstacles in Life
D
In the ever-evolving world of video games, developers strive to create immersive experiences that transport players to alternate realities. They utilize sensory and virtual reality simulations, yet it’s puzzling that haptic (触觉的) technology, which has shown great potential, isn’t widely adopted in the gaming domain.
Haptic feedback, involving the use of motion to imitate touch, has seen significant growth in the market, with a valuation of $2.75 billion in 2022. By integrating touch into games, a more appealing and realistic experience can be achieved, as it extends beyond just sight and sound. Touch is fundamental to human life; it’s the first sense to develop and remains crucial throughout our lives. Observing infants and toddlers reveals their natural inclination to explore the world through touch, suggesting its importance in creating a fulfilling gaming experience, especially for younger players.
Research in the consumer field has also demonstrated the impact of touch. It can alter the perception of products and foster a psychological connection, making it a valuable asset in gaming. However, the choice of “tactile” input needs to be carefully considered, as different textures can influence how something is perceived. The importance of touch can also be seen in research conducted within the consumer domain. It has been found that touch can generate a psychological connection and strengthen how products are perceived. This makes it the perfect ingredient for a great gaming experience.
Some innovative haptic devices, like Sense Glove’s wireless VR gloves, offer force and vibrotactile (震动触觉的) feedback, but many still fall short of replicating real-life touch. Haptic clothing, such as the sensory shirts used by Newcastle Football Club for fans with hearing impairments, shows the potential of this technology. These shirts transform crowd noise into touch data, allowing fans to “feel” the excitement.
Despite the challenges, the importance of touch in gaining emotional responses and enhancing the overall gaming experience cannot be overlooked. When combined effectively with other senses, it can boost working memory and improve gaming performance.
12. What can be reached by applying haptic technology into games?
A. A sight and sound experience. B. An unfulfilling gaming experience.
C. A more engaging and real-life experience. D. A physical connection experience.
13. Why is touch considered important for a better gaming experience?
A. It makes the game more challenging. B. It helps build an enhancing perception.
C. It can replace the need for good graphics. D. It can destroy a psychological connection.
14. What can be inferred about the future of haptic technology in gaming?
A. It will become more widely used. B. It will only be used in gaming markets.
C. It will likely be abandoned due to its high cost. D. It will be replaced by other emerging technologies.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To introduce the latest trends in video game development.
B. To describe the development of virtual reality in the gaming industry.
C. To explain the importance of different senses in the gaming experience.
D. To discuss the potential and current state of haptic technology in gaming.

“Jessalyn, you’re after Esha,” Mrs. Lockwood informed me. Esha was standing at the front of the class with her poster turned backward. Mrs. Lockwood said we needed to share something no one else knew about us. “One thing about me you may not know - I have a black cat, named Sultana, who never meows! She has five toes on her front left paw, which is a little creepy, I admit. Sultana likes to go out exploring in the morning.” Then Esha turned the poster board to reveal a stunning photograph of herself and Shadow - my black cat. My cat! Sultana on the poster was identical to Shadow, down to the spot of white fur on her throat. Why was Esha doing a presentation on Shadow? Thunderous applause went around the classroom as Esha returned to her seat. Without time to think, I quickly walked onto the stage and held up my poster - a photo of my cat. “There’s something no one knows about me, which is I have a pet named Shadow. She’s a black cat with five toes on her front left pa w and she never meows.” My voice trembled. “One interesting thing about Shadow is she never appears at home in the afternoon.” The whole class was looking at me like I’d lost my mind, and I couldn’t continue, running back to my seat.
“Jessalyn and Esha, see me after class,” Mrs. Lockwood said. Minutes later, I stood side by side with Esha, who kept looking at my poster and then back at her own. “It’s rather obvious,” Mrs. Lockwood laughed, “that someone here copied someone else. You have the weekend to work out who should come up with a different topic. Monday, I expect one of you to give a new presentation.”
I followed Esha into the hallway. “Sultana is my cat,” she proclaimed. “I am one hundred percent positive.” “I don’t know who Sultana is, but Shadow is mine.” I said quietly. Her forehead scrunched up. “Why don’t you come to my house today after school? And you can see for yourself. I live at 55 Maddux Drive.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my surprise, Esha’s house ended up being just a couple blocks from where I lived.

【答案】Dear fellow students,
On behalf of the Student’s Council, I am writing to call on everyone to take part in the upcoming “High School Civility and Courtesy Week” event, which our school will be hosting next week. It is with a heavy heart that I must point out some of the current uncivil behaviors observed within our school, such as littering, cutting in line, and using disrespectful language.
The significance of this event lies in promoting a culture of respect and courtesy, which is essential for our development as responsible citizens. The week will be filled with various activities, including lectures on etiquette, clean-up activities around the campus, and a poster competition themed around civility.
Let us all commit to making our school a better place. Looking forward to your active participation.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】To my surprise, Esha’s house ended up being just a couple blocks from where I lived. In her bedroom, a black cat was lying on the bed. “That’s Sultana!” Esha shrieked. Sultana was exactly like Shadow. I was so stunned that I didn’t know what to say. “I do have a cat named Shadow,” I just said. “Let’s go to see her right now,” Esha suggested. I again stressed that Shadow wouldn’t be home in the afternoon. “Are you lying about having a cat?” She asked loudly. I asked Esha to follow Sultana tomorrow morning.
The next morning, bright and early, Esha followed Sultana just as I suggested. When seeing the cat climbing the fence and going straight into my backyard with ease, Esha was left gaping in astonishment. It turned out that everything was just as I guessed. The cat stayed with me in the morning and accompanied Esha in the afternoon. “We can make a presentation together to share a thing that nobody knew about us - a five-toe cat without meows living with two different families,” Esha suggested excitedly.
