B My job is to train rats to find landmines (地雷) so the dangers can be cleared to save lives. I work for a Belgian non-governmental organization called Apopo that operates from Morogoro, in my home country of Tanzania. The rats I train are used in mine-clearing programs around the world, including in Angola, Azerbaijan and Cambodia. The animals we use are a species of African giant rat called Cricetomys ansorgeis. They are born in sub-Saharan Africa and are the size of a small cat which makes them easy to catch. They also live longer than other rats, which is helpful for the program, because it takes between nine months and a year to train one fully. My colleagues and I use a method called clicker training: we teach the rats to relate a click with a food reward, and then use clicks to gradually reward behaviour. Rats are naturally curious, so they will explore, and their great sense of smell means they can find buried landmines. To teach the rats what to look for, we place small amounts of TNT explosives (炸药) in some tea eggs and mix them with some filled with other things. We reward the rats for touching these, then move on to reward them only when they touch a tea egg filled with explosives, rather than ones filled with other things, such as hair, flowers and so on. The rats need to perform perfectly at each stage of training before they move to the next stage. In the final stage, we use real landmines in a training field. As trainers, we build a connection with the rats we train. Some are slow learners; others know the process very quickly. Most of the rats make it through, eventually. I work with our resident scientist to continually follow and improve our training program, because the rats are so clever that they can be smarter than the trainers! 4. Why were Cricetomys ansorgeis chosen for the program? A. They can be seen commonly. B. They’re easily accessible. C. They’re quickly trained. D. They live for up to a year. 5. What’s the key of the training? A. Making the rats explore actively. B. Increasing the difficulty gradually. C. Linking behavior and rewards. D. Exercising rats sense of smell. 6. What can be inferred from the training process? A. Rats can find out tea eggs with hair. B. All rats perform perfectly. C. Real landmines aren’t used in training. D. The training won’t stay the same. 7. Which is the best title for the text? A. How I Train Rats to Find Explosives B. Why Giant Rats Can Be Useful C. How Rats Contribute to Life-saving D. Why We Use Clickers to Train Rats C People commonly talk about how social media is destroying culture, harming cultural identities and fueling culture wars. While many people focus on the harmful influence of social media, I would like to draw attention to the deep and intrinsic (内在的) connection between the social aspect and culture. It is essential to understand that the two are intertwined. For a brand to be welcomed on social platforms, it’s necessary to have a firm grasp of culture and a deep understanding of the social dynamics. Last year, The Weber Shandwick Collective, along with social agency That Lot, conducted a study. The results showed that culturally salient (显著) campaigns have a remarkable impact on business performance. Specifically, these campaigns are 53 percent more likely to drive very large business effects and 2. 6 times more likely to achieve very large profit growth. This clearly indicates that being culturally salient is not just a desirable quality but an absolute necessity for a brand. However, it’s challenging to understand what it means for a brand to be a part of culture. In my view, there are three ways for brands to achieve this. The first is by actively helping to shape culture. Secondly, by straddling (跨越) the gap of culture. That Lot’s work with Gregg’s was the perfect example of this. The third way is by flexibly reacting to cultural shifts. So, what is being culturally salient? The truth is all three. But the starting point is to identify a brand’s current right to play in the cultural stage, and this often begins with its presence on social platforms. The first question we pose to brands is where and when they want to have a presence on social media. We initially try to determine a brand’s position in culture. This involves examining massive elements such as communities, behaviors, trends, partners, influencers, and other related aspects. All of these elements aim to ensure that the brand can establish meaningful connections with both new and existing audiences, thereby allowing it to have an appropriate and valuable role in the culture rather than forcing an uninvited entry. 8. Which can replace the underlined word “intertwined” in paragraph 1? A. Combined. B. Hidden. C. Misunderstood. D. Welcomed. 9. What can we know from the study in paragraph 2? A. Profitable brands should emphasize culture. B. Culture companies are growing fast nowadays. C. Being culturally salient can attract investment. D. Culture can make a company more competitive. 10. How can a brand fit into culture? A. By shaping the tradition of culture. B. By focusing on cultural differences. C. By seeking for cooperation actively. D. By adapting to the change of culture. 11. Why should a brand conduct a comprehensive investigation? A. To determine its partners. B. To build links with customers. C. To dominate in the culture. D. To get into a culture quickly. D Weight loss is not just a medical phenomenon — it’s a social one, too. As researchers, we’re well aware that drastic weight loss can reshape people’s social lives and emotional well-being in negative as well as positive ways. We traced the journeys of 35 people undergoing bariatric (减肥) surgery. The people we worked with experienced greater self-confidence, in addition to health benefits. But many also had to cope with both unpleasant physical side effects and mean judgments from others. We predict that people who take drugs to lose weight will be similarly affected by side effects and judged by others, with consequences for well-being and mental health. Around the globe, slimmer bodies have become associated with a higher social status. Thinness is also widely linked to good health in popular culture. At the same time, the stigma (污名) surrounding “fatness” is everywhere. There is also a widespread socio-cultural view that becoming and staying thin should be achieved through struggle and morally valued dietary control and exercise. More than half of our study participants didn’t tell people other than close family that they were undergoing bariatric surgery, because they feared judgment. They had lost their physical weight, but they still carried the stigma of being labelled as lazy and undisciplined. Such judgment has many relevant emotional and behavioral effects. Taking steps to ensure that people understand the physical and emotional pros and cons of weight-loss drugs is crucial, to prevent some unexpected negative social and emotional effects among the millions of people who will take anti-obesity drugs in the coming years. In our view, the widespread enthusiasm for weight-loss drugs is not just a solution to a medical problem — it’s also a response to deeply held, widespread fear and anxiety around body weight. The stigma of being labelled by others as fat can shape decisions to use weight-loss medications. But, as our research with people undergoing bariatric surgery shows, weight loss is not that simple. It’s crucial that pharmaceutical (制药的) companies, clinicians and researchers consider the emotional aspect of decision-making around anti-obesity drugs. 12. What can be inferred about the bariatric surgery? A. It has the same effects on most people. B. It needs to be viewed in its entirety. C. It’s more effective than taking drugs. D. Its benefits outweigh the disadvantages. 13. Why were many participants unwilling to make their bariatric surgery in the open? A. They are lazy and undisciplined. B. They may receive bad comments. C. The surgery has lots of side effects. D. The surgery is unhelpful in losing weight. 14. How should we minimize the negative effects of taking anti-obesity drugs? A. Predict negative impacts in the future. B. Restrict people from taking these drugs. C. Publicize their physical and mental effects. D. Ensure that people know their health status. 15. What is the author’s view on the popularity of weight-loss drugs? A. It arises from weight anxiety. B. It is a quick way to lose weight. C. It’s good for removing the stigma. D. It should be considered simply. Mudslide and debris flow (泥石流) events are characterized by the rapid downhill movement of soil, rocks and other debris. From the moment he could remember, the thrill of the wind against his face and the rhythm of his feet hitting the ground filled him with a sense of purpose and joy. Ever since he was a child, he dreamt of participating in the city marathon and winning it. In high school he enthusiastically joined the track team. He was full of hope and determination, but his first race was a disaster. He tripped over his own feet and fell near the finish line, the sound of laughter ringing in his ears. The shame was intense, but rather than let it break him, it fueled his determination to prove himself. He trained hard every day, waking up before dawn to run several miles. The early morning air was cold and biting, but he pushed through. However, during a crucial practice session, he pulled a muscle and had to take a break for weeks. He was frustrated as he watched his teammates progress. His confidence took a huge hit, and doubt began to boost. When he recovered and went back to training, he found it difficult to regain his previous form. Each run felt like a struggle, and he constantly questioned if he had lost his edge. Just as he was starting to make progress and regain his speed, a new setback appeared. He got sick with a severe flu that kept him on the bed for a month. The loss of fitness and strength was disheartening, and the fear of having to start all over again appeared. When he finally returned to training, he found that he had lost much of his endurance and had to work twice as hard to catch up. However, Jason refused to give in. He trained even harder, pushing his limits every day. Long runs under the sun, tiring speed workouts, and intense strength training became his routine. The pain and exhaustion were constant companions, but he never let them stop him. He believed that all his struggles and perseverance would finally pay off. Finally, the day of marathon arrived, the starting gun fired, and the race began. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From that day on, Jason continued to pursue his passion for running. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 名校学术联盟·高考模拟信息卷&冲刺卷 英 语 (五) 全卷满分150分 考试用时120分钟 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? I work for a Belgian non-governmental organization called Apopo that operates from Morogoro, in my home country of Tanzania. The rats I train are used in mine-clearing programs around the world, including in Angola, Azerbaijan and Cambodia. The animals we use are a species of African giant rat called Cricetomys ansorgeis. They are born in sub-Saharan Africa and are the size of a small cat, which makes them easy to catch. A How I Train Rats to Find Explosives B. Why Giant Rats Can Be Useful C. How Rats Contribute to Life-saving D Why We Use Clickers to Train Rats 【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. 根据第二段中的“They are born in sub-Saharan Africa and are the size of a small cat, which makes them easy to catch.(它们出生在撒哈拉以南非洲地区,体型像一只小猫,很容易被捕捉到。)” 根据第三段中的“My colleagues and I use a method called clicker training: we teach the rats to relate a click with a food reward, and then use clicks to gradually reward behaviour.(我和我的同事们使用了一种称为响片训练的方法:我们教老鼠将咔哒声与食物奖励联系起来,然后用咔哒声来逐渐奖励行为。)” 根据最后一段中的“I work with our resident scientist to continually follow and improve our training program, because the rats are so clever that they can be smarter than the trainers!(我与我们的常驻科学家合作,不断跟踪和改进我们的训练计划,因为老鼠非常聪明,可以比训练员更聪明!)” 根据第一段首句“My job is to train rats to find landmines(地雷) so the dangers can be cleared to save lives.(我的工作是训练老鼠寻找地雷,这样就可以清除危险,挽救生命。)”可知,第一段介绍了作者的工作是训练老鼠扫雷;根据第二段首句“The animals we use are a species of African giant rat called Cricetomys ansorgeis.(我们使用的动物是一种非洲大鼠,叫做Cricetomys ansorgeis。)” A。 C People commonly talk about how social media is destroying culture, harming cultural identities and fueling culture wars. The results showed that culturally salient (显著的) campaigns have a remarkable impact on business performance. A 9. D 10. D 11. 由文章第一段中“While many people focus on the harmful influence of social media, I would like to draw attention to the deep and intrinsic (内在的) connection between the social aspect and culture. It is essential to understand that the two are intertwined. For a brand to be welcomed on social platforms, it’s necessary to have a firm grasp of culture and a deep understanding of the social dynamics. 故选A。 由文章第二段中“The results showed that culturally salient (显著的) campaigns have a remarkable impact on business performance. Specifically, these campaigns are 53 percent more likely to drive very large business effects and 2. 6 times more likely to achieve very large profit growth. (研究结果表明,具有文化显著性的活动对商业表现有显著影响。具体来说,这些活动有53%的可能性产生非常大的商业效应,并且有2.6倍的可能性实现非常大的利润增长)”可知,具有文化显著性的活动可以显著提升商业表现和利润增长,这说明文化可以使公司更具竞争力。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第三段中“However, it’s challenging to understand what it means for a brand to be a part of culture. In my view, there are three ways for brands to achieve this. The first is by actively helping to shape culture. Secondly, by straddling (跨越) the gap of culture. That Lot’s work with Gregg’s was the perfect example of this. The third way is by flexibly reacting to cultural shifts. (然而,理解一个品牌如何成为文化的一部分颇具挑战。在我看来,品牌可以通过三种方式实现这一点。第一种是积极帮助塑造文化。第二种是跨越文化鸿沟。That Lot与Gregg的合作就是这方面的完美例子。第三种方式是灵活应对文化变迁)”可知,品牌可以通过适应文化的变化来融入文化。故选D。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。由文章最后一段中“This involves examining massive elements such as communities, behaviors, trends, partners, influencers, and other related aspects. All of these elements aim to ensure that the brand can establish meaningful connections with both new and existing audiences, thereby allowing it to have an appropriate and valuable role in the culture rather than forcing an uninvited entry. (这涉及考察诸如社群、行为、趋势、合作伙伴、意见领袖以及其他相关方面等众多因素。所有这些元素都旨在确保品牌能够与新老受众建立有意义的联系,从而使其在文化中扮演适当且有价值的角色,而不是强行闯入)”可知,品牌进行全面调查的目的是为了与新老受众建立有意义的联系,即与客户建立联系。故选B。 D Weight loss is not just a medical phenomenon — it’s a social one, too. C It’s more effective than taking drugs. B 13. B 14. C 15. 根据第二段中“We traced the journeys of 35 people undergoing bariatric (减肥) surgery. The people we worked with experienced greater self-confidence, in addition to health benefits. But many also had to cope with both unpleasant physical side effects and mean judgments from others. (我们追踪了35名接受减肥手术的人的旅程。与我们一起工作的人不仅获得了健康上的益处,还获得了更大的自信。但许多人还必须应对令人不快的身体副作用和他人的刻薄评价)”可知,减肥手术不仅带来了健康益处和自信心的提升,同时也伴随着身体副作用和来自他人的负面评价。这表明减肥手术的影响是多方面的,需要被全面看待。故选B项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“More than half of our study participants didn’t tell people other than close family that they were undergoing bariatric surgery, because they feared judgment. They had lost their physical weight, but they still carried the stigma of being labelled as lazy and undisciplined. (超过一半的研究参与者没有告诉近亲以外的人他们正在接受减肥手术,因为他们害怕被评判。他们的体重减轻了,但他们仍然背负着懒惰和散漫的耻辱)”可知,许多参与者不愿意公开是因为他们会收到负面的评论。故选B项。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“Taking steps to ensure that people understand the physical and emotional pros and cons of weight-loss drugs is crucial, to prevent some unexpected negative social and emotional effects among the millions of people who will take anti-obesity drugs in the coming years. (采取措施确保人们了解减肥药在身体和情感上的利弊是至关重要的,以防止未来几年将服用减肥药的数百万人产生意想不到的负面的社会和情感影响)”可知,我们应该通过宣传减肥药物对身体和心理的影响,将其负面影响降到最低。故选C项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In our view, the widespread enthusiasm for weight-loss drugs is not just a solution to a medical problem — it’s also a response to deeply held, widespread fear and anxiety around body weight. (在我们看来,对减肥药的广泛追捧不仅是为了解决医疗问题,也是对人们对体重根深蒂固、普遍存在的恐惧和焦虑的一种回应)”可推知,作者认为减重药物的流行源于对体重的焦虑。故选A项。 Mudslide and debris flow (泥石流) events are characterized by the rapid downhill movement of soil, rocks and other debris. From the moment he could remember, the thrill of the wind against his face and the rhythm of his feet hitting the ground filled him with a sense of purpose and joy. Ever since he was a child, he dreamt of participating in the city marathon and winning it. In high school, he enthusiastically joined the track team. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Finally, the day of marathon arrived, the starting gun fired, and the race began. In the final stretch, Jason used a final burst of energy. The crowd’s cheers grew louder as he crossed the finish line first. Tears of joy and relief streamed down his face. His story spread throughout the school and the community and he received countless messages of support and admiration. From that day on, Jason continued to pursue his passion for running. He faced new challenges and competitions with a calm and confident attitude. Each race was a testament to his growth and the lessons he had learned along the way. The road to success might have been full of twists and turns, but it made his achievements all the more sweet.
