The teacher was teaching us the Palmer Penmanship Method, drilling into us the importance of forming big flowing lines when we wrote g’s and s’s as well as beautiful f’s that in my mind were like fairy tale princesses wearing fancy hats while extending their right foot. We were strictly prohibited from using block letters on our homework, as they lack the beauty. Now it becomes apparent that young people no longer learn cursive (草书). They type everything, mostly on their phones. Beautiful handwriting is a thing of the past. This has become a source of great sadness among traditionalists. But recently something happened that shook my faith in cursive. To my complete disbelief, not one but two of my close friends complained about the handwriting on my postcards. They were grateful for the beautiful postcards I regularly sent, but they said they honestly couldn't read a thing I had written. One friend went so far as to ask if I could use block letters next time so that she could understand what I was writing. Initially, I was angry. I had made the effort to cover an entire postcard with what I viewed as not just handwriting but calligraphy. But then I showed an English friend a postcard I'd just written, and he said that the only thing that was readily understandable was the letters “U. S. A.” The rest of it, he politely suggested, looked like “chicken scrawl”. Looking at the postcard dispassionately, I unwillingly admit that he has a point. All the m’s and n’s run together, and the l’s look like l’s. The a’s are indistinguishable from the q’s. So, from now on, I'm taking their advice and using block letters to communicate. In fact, I just now sent an old friend a postcard. But this time, I simply wrote — in big block letters: DEAR ALICE: HI. JOE. I hope she gets the message. 4. What do we know about the Palmer Penmanship Method? A. It is characterized by big flowing lines. B. It is rarely appreciated by traditionalists. C. It was not allowed in students'homework. D. It is viewed as a trend in handwriting styles. 5. What weakened the writer’s belief in cursive? A. The popularity of block letters in recent times. B. The younger generation’s disinterest in cursive. C. His friends’ failure to comprehend his postcards. D. His English friend's suggestion on postcard design. 6. Why did the writer switch to block letters for communication? A. To deliver his message clearly. B. To improve his handwriting skills. C. To win praise from his friends. D. To show his passion for calligraphy. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. The wide use of cursive. B. The sad decline of cursive. C. The value of preserving cursive. D. The technique of writing in cursive. C Is modern fruit cultivated (培育) to be sweeter than in the past? The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated. Some of the most powerful evidence that fruit is sweeter than before comes from zoos. In 2018, it was reported that Melboume Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet that it was causing tooth decay (蛀牙) and weight gain. The monkeys at the zoo were provided with a lower-sugar vegetable-based diet instead of bananas. Among fruit cultivators, the word “quality” is now routinely used as an equal for “high in sugar” (though firmness, color and size are also considerations). In 2010, in an article looking at ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using “molecuiar (分子的) approaches”, a group of plant scientists of the Republic of Korea wrote that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding”. Modern apple varieties, the scientists noted, were on average sweeter than older ones. Cultivation isn’t the only reason that modern fruit is sweeter; there’s also climate change. Research from Japan found that since the 1970s, with rising temperatures, Fuji apples (which were already a sweet variety) have become significantly sweeter and softer. The lead researcher, Toshihoko Sugiura, said that “if you could taste an apple harvested 30 years ago, you would feel the difference”. It is sometimes claimed that the sweetness of modern fruit is not due to higher sugar content so much as the fact that the bitterness and sourness of wild fruit have been steadily cultivated out of it. There’s a grain — but only a grain — of truth in this. Studies of wild apples do indeed suggest that some ancient varieties were just as high in sugar as a modern Pink Lady or Honeycrisp. The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples, whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness. 8. Why did Melbourne Zoo stop giving fruit to most of its animals? A. The animals preferred a vegetable- based diet. B. Modern fruit did great harm to animals’ teeth. C. The sugar content of modern fruit is lower than before. D. The flavor of modern fruit was not good for the animals. 9. What can we learn from paragraph 3? A. The sugar content is breeders’ first priority. B. Sweeter fruits are just a result of natural selection. C. The sweetness of modern apples is equal to the average of older ones. D. Molecular approaches are adopted to add the sweetness of modern fruit. 10. What do studies of wild apples in the last paragraph suggest? A. Apples of old species tasted less sweet. B. The sugar content of wild apples varied greatly. C. The sweetness of modern apples is of the same level. D. Fruit is sweet because bitterness in it has disappeared. 11. What’s the best title for this passage? A. Modern or Old: Which Is Better? B. Modern Fruit: Sweetness Is Quality. C Fruit Is Sweeter: It’s Not a Misconception. D. Melbourne Zoo: Animals Stop Eating Fruits. D As new technologies take on increasingly humanlike qualities, there’s been a push to make them genderless. “People are stereotyping (形成刻板印象) their gendered objects in very traditional ways.” says Ashley Martin, a Stanford associate professor of organizational behavior. Removing gender from the picture altogether seems like a simple way to fix this. Yet as Martin has found in her work, gender is one of the fundamental ways people form connections with objects, particularly those designed with human characteristics. In her study, Martin asked participants to rate their attachment to male, female, and genderless versions of a digital voice assistant and a self-driving car known as “Miuu.” It was found that gender increased users’ feelings of attachment to these devices and their interest in purchasing them. For example, participants said they would be less likely to buy a genderless voice assistant than versions with male or female voices. While gendering a product may be good marketing, it may also strengthen outdated or harmful ideas about power and identity. The stereotypes commonly associated with men, such as competitiveness and dominance, are more valued than those associated with women. These qualities, in turn, are mapped onto products that have been assigned a gender. Martin’s study also found that creating a genderless object was difficult. For instance, if an object s name was meant to sound to sound genderless, like Miuu, participants would still assign a gender to it — they would assume Miuu was a “he” or “she.” Martin sees a silver lining, however: She believes that anthropomorphism (拟人化) “provides an opportunity to change stereotypes.” When women are put into positions of leadership like running companies, it reduces negative stereotypes about women. Similarly, anthropomorphized products could be created to take on stereotype — inconsistent roles — a male robot that assists with nursing or a female robot that helps do calculations, for instance. 12. What is the purpose of making new technologies genderless? A. To reduce stereotypes. B. To meet public demand. C. To cut production costs. D. To encourage competition. 13 What were the participants probably asked to do in the study? A. Design a product. B. Respond to a survey. C. Work as assistants. D. Take a language test. 14. Why is it difficult to create genderless objects? A. They cannot be mass-produced. B. Naming them is a challenging task. C. People assume they are unreliable. D. Gender is rooted in people’s mind. 15. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A The quality of genderless products. B. The upside of gendering a product. C. The meaning of anthropomorphism. D. The stereotypes of men and women. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s believed that everything you need to know can be found in a book. Some people argue that lines from novels and plays are dependent on what surrounds them. ____17____ I don’t buy this. It ignores the way that your brain collects, sorts and combines information. You can rant against (咆哮) a book, or even throw it out the window. Still, you won’t change the words on the page. We all ask each other a lot of questions: “How did you sleep?” “Where did you go on your holidays?” But there’s one question we should ask of one another a lot more often, and that is: “What are you reading?” It isn’t a simple question when asked with genuine curiosity. ____19____ You can also learn about the person who wrote the book by assessing their writing techniques, such as ideas, word choice, style, tone, and content. ____20____ Similarly, examining the characters in books can give us a better grasp of human emotions and actions. Understanding others helps us to empathize with them, which creates a more compassionate society. A. They demand our attention. B. But they seem out of reach for most of us. C. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge. One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers training inside the boxing ring (拳击赛场). She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact, she’d long been attracted to boxing. She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase: BOXING CLUB TRYOUT (选拔). That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve (开辟) her own path. The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.” “But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted, “and what exactly does ‘only for boys’ mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!” Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision, no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork (步法) and punching (击打) abilities with other candidates (候选人). Boxing didn’t come natural to Kelly, but she had made úp her mind to stick with her choice. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Para l: Then Kelly began her training for the tryout, keeping it a secret from her mom. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para 2: The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1-5 AACCA 6-10 CCBBA 11-15 CABCC 16-20 BACBB 福建省厦门第一中学2024-2025学年 高三下英语 (试卷满分:150分,考试时间:120分钟) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。 听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1.What is the woman waiting for?
