I had it as a dream when I was a small child and never let it go. I ran away to the circus when I was in my early 30s. I thought “if I don’t do it now, I never will.” People somehow think that circus might have begun in America or even Australia. But actually, it began right here in the center of London. It’s hard to find a country that hasn’t been touched by a circus. More recently, the circus has been criticized for its use of animals, but performances have always reached the limit of human abilities. Circus is always changing, but the essence of it is exactly like you see 250 years ago. You’ve got people here all the way around you. You get that laugh and warmth from the audience coming from all sides. To be this close to the action, you know, things can go wrong. It’s real. And that is the beauty of live entertainment compared to watching it on TV. I think the future of the circus is very bright. A Latin Music Festival Sunday, 1 September Concerts on the bandstand (室外音乐台) 4:30-5:45pm Los Chinches are one of the most exciting acts to come from the Latin scene, with their classic new sound that ties Peruvian cumbia with ska spirit of London together. She was born on 10th December 1830 at Amherst, Massachusetts to Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson. She had an older brother, Austin, and younger sister named Lavinia. From 1834 to 1847, Emily Dickinson studied at the Amherst Academy, an academic institution that was co-founded by her grandfather, Samuel Fowler Dickinson. In 1847, she studied at the Hadley Female Seminary (now known as Mount Holyoke College) but returned to Amherst only after a year, and began her own unique life. After returning from the Seminary, Emily withdrew from all social contact and refused to entertain guests. She chose to dress herself only in white and spent most of her time inside her room. She started writing poems at around this time. Her initial forays(最初的尝试) were conventional(有争议的) but later on, she experimented until she developed her own unique style. The 1860s contributed greatly to Emily Dickinson’s writing style and content. The US Civil War broke out in 1861; her closest friends Samuel Bowles moved to Europe for health reasons, and Charles Wadsworth was relocated to San Francisco. In addition, she also had a persistent eye trouble. Although these years were very troublesome for Dickinson, this could also be considered as the most productive period of her life. During this time, Emily Dickinson wrote around 800 poems. Emily Dickinson never married and died on May 15, 1886. Her poems were published by her sister, Lavinia in 1886. During her life, only seven poems were published, but Emily Dickinson has penned almost 2,000 poems. 24. What happened to Emily in 1848? A. She studied at the Amherst Academy. B. She went to the Hadley Female Seminary. C. She felt lonely and returned to Amherst. D. She began her life of solitude. 25. What can we infer from the third paragraph? A. Emily’s writing was disturbed by the US Civil War. B. Two of her closest friends deserted her in 1861. C. Charles Wadsworth once lived in San Francisco. D. Emily developed her own unique style. 26. When were most of Emily’s poems published? A. After her death in 1886. B. During the US Civil War. C. During her university time. D. Before her death in 1886. 27. What is the passage mainly about? A. Emily’s life as a poet. B. Emily’s lifestyle. C. Emily’s writing styles. D. Emily’s poems. D 25. C 26. A 27. 根据第二段第二句“In 1847, she studied at the Hadley Female Seminary (now known as Mount Holyoke College) but returned to Amherst only after a year, and began her own unique life.”(1847年,她就读于哈德利女子神学院(即现在的曼荷莲学院),但只过了一年就回到阿默斯特学院,开始了她独特的生活。) 根据第一段第一句“Very little is known of Emily Elizabeth Dickinson as the American poet always kept to herself and lived a life of solitude(隐居). 根据最后一段“Emily Dickinson never married and died on May 15, 1886. Her poems were published by her sister, Lavinia in 1886. During her life, only seven poems were published, but Emily Dickinson has penned almost 2,000 poems.”(艾米莉·狄金森终身未婚,于1886年5月15日辞世。 故选A。 根据第一段第二句“She was born on 10th December 1830 ”(她出生于1830年12月10日),第二段第一句“From 1834 to 1847, Emily Dickinson studied at the Amherst Academy, an academic institution that was co-founded by her grandfather, Samuel Fowler Dickinson. ”(从1834年到1847年,艾米莉·狄金森就读于她的祖父塞缪尔·福勒·狄金森创办的阿默斯特学院。),最后一段第一句“Emily Dickinson never married and died on May 15, 1886. Her poems were published by her sister, Lavinia in 1886.”(艾米莉·狄金森终身未婚,于1886年5月15日辞世。 A。 C Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US, have developed a piece of software that can read minds. The project, supported by Facebook, hopes to help people who, because of medical conditions, are unable to communicate with others. Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired (语言障碍) people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation. People find these things upsetting to use. This new way uses brain signals to change a person’s thoughts into text. When we want to speak, the brain sends signals to make the lips, jaw and tongue move in the right way to make an understandable sound. By discovering these brain signals, the new software is able to predict what a person want to say quickly enough to hold a conversation. The brain-reading software was tested on three volunteers who could all speak like healthy people. They were being treated for epilepsy (癫痫). As part of their treatment for epilepsy, each patient had electrodes(电极) placed on to their brain. Edward Chang, whole d the study, used these electrodes to record the signals in the patients’ brains while they listened to a list of questions and answered them. Chang and his team then built a computer program that learned to match the patients’ brain signals to the words the patients heard and the words the patients spoke. For the questions, the software matched the correct words 76%of the time. For the answers, it matched the correct words 61%of the time. Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back. Chang said, “We as scientists should try our best to help people to bring that most important and basic human ability back.” 28. What is the disadvantage of previous technologies? A. They couldn’t read people’s minds correctly. B. They couldn’t make communication understandable. C. They couldn’t serve the purpose of natural conversation. D. They couldn’t let medical conditions change for the better. 29. How does the software help people? A. By changing people’s mind into text. B. By sending signals to their lips. C. By organizing conversations for them. D. By training them how to speak. 30. What can we know about the mind-reading software according to the last paragraph? A. It has been used on a wide scale. B. It has restored the basic human ability. C. It still has plenty of room for improvement. D. It has enhanced human real-time conversation. 31. What is the attitude of the author towards the mind-reading software? A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Intolerant. D. Doubtful. C 29. A 30. C 31. 根据第二段中的“Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation.(到目前为止,帮助有语言障碍的人交流的技术速度太慢,无法进行自然的对话)”可知,以前的技术的缺点是它们不能达到自然对话的目的。 故选A。 根据最后一段中的“Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back.(现在,这种读心术软件只能对训练它的有限的句子起作用。科学家们希望这个早期的系统能帮助他们开发出一个更强大的系统,可以实时理解人们的想法,让人们重新发声)”可推断,此软件仍有很大的改进空间。故选C。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据全文可知,文章主要介绍了可以“读懂”人类思想的软件,以及软件测试的过程和改善的空间。由此推知,作者对待软件的态度是客观的。故选B。 D “Instagram (a social networking app) will cut out many users’ accounts on December 20. To protect your account, repost this warning #KeepMyAccountSafe.” Every few months, it happens again — dozens of annoying posts from my kids’ friends suddenly start to appear on my Instagram news feed. According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news is false. Researchers asked more than 7,800 middle school and high school students to complete 56 tasks, like distinguishing an advertisement from a real news story on a website and determining which blog in a series was most reliable. They found that students judged the credibility of blogs based not on the source of the material, but on how much detail they contained, or whether a large photo was attached. “Many people assume that because young people are fluent in social media, they can distinguish fake news, but our work shows the opposite to be true,” wrote the lead study author Sam Wineburg, a professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education. Both Google and Facebook are now taking steps to prevent misleading news from making its way on their platforms, but they won’t be able to eliminate it completely. That is why it’s now more important than ever to teach our kids to think critically when it comes to believing various information sources. “In the coming months, we look forward to sharing our assessments and working with educators to create materials that will guide young people in the sea of disinformation they encounter online,” said Wineburg. 32. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage? A. By stating opinions. B. By citing sayings. C. By quoting a post. D. By showing findings. 33. According to researchers, what determines the credibility of online information? A. The size of relevant photos B. The popularity of the website. C. The amount of detail. D. The source of the material. 34. What does the underlined word “eliminate” mean in Paragraph 4? A. Update. B. Remove. C. Estimate. D. Digest. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Stronger Together: The Internet Changes Our Life B. Reliable News Has No Place on Social Media C. Be Careful: Kids Are Bad at Identifying Fake News D. Educators Have a Long Way to Go to Guide the Young. B 33. D 34. B 35. 根据第一段“‘Instagram (a social networking app) will cut out many users’ accounts on December 20. To protect your account, repost this warning #KeepMyAccountSafe.’ Every few months, it happens again — dozens of annoying posts from my kids’ friends suddenly start to appear on my Instagram news feed. (“社交网络应用Instagram将于12月20日关闭许多用户账户。为了保护您的账户,请转发此警告#KeepMyAccountSafe。” 每隔几个月,这种事情就会再次发生——来自孩子的朋友们的几十条烦人帖子会出现在我的Instagram动态中)”可推知,在第一段中作者通过引用自己Instagram动态中出现的一些说法来引入文章的主题。故选B。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news is false.(根据斯坦福大学的一项新研究,大多数孩子不知道什么新闻是假的)”和“They found that students judged the credibility of blogs based not on the source of the material, but on how much detail they contained, or whether a large photo was attached.(他们发现,学生们判断博客的可信度不是基于材料的来源,而是基于它们包含多少细节,或者是否附有一张大照片)”可知,研究人员认为,大多数孩子不知道什么新闻是假的,是因为他们判断博客的可信度不是基于材料的来源,由此推知,决定网络信息可信度的是材料的来源。 根据画线词所在句“Both Google and Facebook are now taking steps to control misleading news from making its way on their platforms, but they won’t be able to eliminate it completely. (谷歌和Facebook现在都在采取措施控制误导新闻在他们的平台上传播,但他们不可能完全eliminate它) ”中but可知,上下文有转折,虽然谷歌和Facebook在采取措施控制误导新闻的传播,但不可能完全消除这些新闻。画线词eliminate意思为“消除”,与remove意思相近。故选B。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news is fake.(根据斯坦福大学的一项新研究,大多数孩子不知道什么新闻是假的)”可知,文章介绍了斯坦福大学的研究发现,大多数孩子不知道什么新闻是假的,并分析了原因,给出了建议。 The modern competitive sport of weightlifting originated in 19th-century Europe and was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. ______36______ At that time, simple competitions were held to see who could lift the heaviest weight. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. l knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus!” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.” “Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.” “Go where, Grandma?” l asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store. the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money.” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s. l was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. l knew that because he never went out for recess(休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I fingered the ten dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that. “Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.” The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas. That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Grandma and I waited breathlessly in the bush for Bobby Decker’s front door to open. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, and dashed for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and then Grandma and I hid in the car. Grandma and l waited breathlessly in the bush for Bobby Decker’s front door to open. Out went Bobby Decker. Seeing the coat in the bag, he looked very astonished and then called his mother to go out. After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that time, I decided to be Santa’s helper forever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree. 词汇激活 行为类 意识到:realize/be aware of 看大:see/spot 放下:put down/place 情绪类 惊讶:astonished /surprised 自豪:proud / beamish 【点睛】[高分句型1] She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers. B. Emily’s life as a poet. B. Emily’s lifestyle. C. Emily’s writing styles. D. Emily’s poems. C Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US, have developed a piece of software that can read minds. 31 What is the attitude of the author towards the mind-reading software? A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Intolerant. D. Doubtful. D “Instagram (a social networking app) will cut out many users’ accounts on December 20. The modern competitive sport of weightlifting originated in 19th-century Europe and was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. ______36______ At that time, simple competitions were held to see who could lift the heaviest weight. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
