This list of Hotel Safety Tips will give you the tools and techniques you need to feel and be safe. From years of staying in hotels (mostly for work) we’ve learned how to minimize the risk of hotel theft or other hotel risks by employing the simple but effective hotel safety strategics listed below. Always lock the door All hotels have door latches that add an extra layer of security to the door. It won’t stop the most determined thieves, but it will slow them down and for the less ambitious it might be enough to scare them off. If your door has a manual lock, be sure to flip it locked. You can’t have enough protection. Avoid leaving valuables in your room Numerous staff members have master keys that can open every room in the hotel and the cleaning staff enters your room at least once a day. While most are professionals and wouldn’t dream of taking anything, there’s no need to tempt them by leaving your diamond ring on the bed or laptop in plain sight. Always take valuables with you IF you can. Use the privacy signs whenever possible If you do have to leave your room make sure you hang the privacy sign. If the guest is in the room, hotel staff may avoid the guest. You can also turn your TV on to further indicate someone’s in the room improving the chances your stuff will be safe. This hotel safety tip obviously doesn’t apply if you desire your room being serviced. For a bonus hotel safety tip, hang the sign when YOU are in the room to make sure they stay clear. Learn the hotel exits If you’ve ever experienced escaping from a hotel at 2 in the morning for a hotel fire it’s not pleasant! Take a quick glance at the exit plan posted in the room and be ready. Don’t forget to leave your luggage when you exit your room in a fire situation. 36. According to the passage, the door latches may ________. A. stop the theft B. scare all thieves off C. keep your room safer D. not give you any protection 37. What does the underlined word “tempt” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A Persuade. B. Attract. C. Threat. D. Refuse. 38. What are you advised to do if you stay in a hotel? A. Make sure the cleaning staff clean your room every day. B. Test to make sure the privacy sign works well. C. Always turn your TV on while you are in the room. D. Avoid leaving your stuff in the room. 39. In a fire situation, you should ________. A. look through the exit plan carefully before leaving B. post an exit plan in the room in advance C. escape immediately without taking any luggage D. stay in the room until 2 in the morning 40. Which of the following is the passage probably taken from? A. A technical instruction book. B. A community survey report. C. A diary. D. A guidebook. B My mother was never truly happy in Connecticut finding the winter bitter cold and the culture provincial (偏狭的). Though she grew up in New Jersey, she moved to San Francisco in her early twenties, met and married my dad out there. After I was born, they decided to return east, closer to their own parents. But she never let go of her love for the Bay Area. California was always part of the conversation when I was a kid. I ate meals off a map-of-the-world placemat (餐垫), and Mom taught me to identify San Francisco before I learned where Hartford was. She told us stories of perfection on a single city, fantasizing about retiring out west. My dad would play along, but his heart wasn’t in the same place. While my mother’s status in the nonprofit world advanced, her desire to move back to her favorite place grew strong. She applied for jobs in the Bay, underwent bicoastal Skype screenings, even traveled out for a couple of interviews on a whim (心血来潮). Sometimes her cover letters disappeared, other times she made it down to the final two candidates. With each rejection, she promised to make her next job application even stronger. This past May, I relocated from San Francisco to New York for a job. A few weeks later, Mom called me. Her pursuit had finally paid off. She’s been offered a vice president position at a public health nonprofit in Oakland. A few weeks later, she packed up her baggage and left Connecticut for good. Our lives are more semblable than ever these days. We’re both discovering our new homes, making friends. We’re looking for a good yoga studio to join, reading the same books and chatting about the plots by text message. I emailed her photos from my trip to Burning Man and she replied with stories about her new coworkers who go every year. There’s even time for the occasional dating disaster. Perhaps that’s the paradox (悖论) of growing older. Things will always change, and they can change immediately—my mother is proof. But an individual’s own power to create change always stays the same. Everything can change, and therefore nothing ever really changes. Now when I’m out west for a visit, Mom meets me at a station with her big bag. We stop by the Grand Lake farmers market, picking out the freshest seasonal ingredients, before hiking up the hill to her new apartment. One of these days, I’ll actually cook her dinner. 41. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. The author spent her childhood in California. B. The author’s father didn’t want to live in California. C. The author’s mother liked to use plates with map designs. D. The author’s family preferred listening to stories of the west. 42. What can we know about the author’s mother? A. She always likes to struggle on her own. B. She owns a public health nonprofit company. C. Nothing can stop her from reaching her goal. D. She takes everything of her daughter on herself. 43. What does the underlined word “semblable” mean? A. Changeable. B. Comfortable. C. Similar. D. Creative. 44. Which of the following is TRUE? A. The relationship between the author and her mother is good. B. Everyone has the power to make a difference to his family. C. Culture and living conditions have influence on one’s life style. D. The author’s mother had a hard time before she looked for a job. 45. In the last paragraph, the author wants to tell the readers that . A. her family’s life changes all the time because of her mother B. the mother-daughter feelings will stay the same forever C. she has grown up during her family’s constant moves D. her mother always wants to change her current situations C In the more and more competitive service industry, it is no longer enough to promise customer satisfaction. Today, customer “delight” is what companies are trying to achieve in order to keep and increase market share. It is accepted in the marketing industry, and confirmed by a number of researches, that customers receiving good service will promote business by telling up to 12 other people; those treated badly will tell their tales of woe to up to 20 people. Interestingly, 80 percent of people who feel their complaints are handled fairly will stay loyal. New challenges for customer care have come when people can obtain goods and services through telephone call centers and the Internet. For example, many companies now have to invest a lot of money in information technology and staff training in order to cope with the “phone rage” — caused by delays in answering calls, being cut off in mid-conversation or let waiting for long periods. “Many people do not like talking to machines,” says Dr. Storey, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at City University Business School. “Banks, for example, encourage staff at call centers to use customer data to establish instant and good relationship with them. The aim is to make the customer feel they know you and that you can trust them — the sort of comfortable feelings people have during face-to-face chats with their local branch manager.” Recommended ways of creating customer delight include: under-promising and over-delivering (saying that a repair will be carried out within five hours, but getting it done within two); replacing a faulty product immediately; throwing in a gift voucher (购物礼券) as an unexpected “thank you” to regular customers; and always returning calls, even when they are complaints. Aiming for customer delight is all very well, but if services do not reach the high level promised, disappointment or worse will be the result. This can be eased by offering an apology and an explanation of why the service did not meet usual standards with empathy (for example, “I know how you must feel”), and possible solutions (replacement, compensation or whatever fairness suggests best meets the case). Airlines face some of the toughest challenges over customer care. Fierce competition has convinced them that delighting passengers in an important marketing tool, while there is great potential for customer anger over delays caused by weather, unclaimed luggage and technical problems. For British Airways staff, a winning telephone style is considered vital in handling the large volume of calls about booking and flight times. They are trained to answer quickly, with their name, job title and a “we are here to help” attitude. The company has invested heavily in information technology to make sure that information is available instantly on screen. British Airways also says its customer care policies are applied within the company and staff are taught to regard each other as customers requiring the highest standards of service. Customer care is obviously here to stay and it would be a foolish company that used slogans such as “we do as we please.” On the other hand, the more customers are promised, the greater the risk of disappointment. 46. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that __________. A. complaining customers are hard to satisfy B. unsatisfied customers receive better service C. satisfied customers catch more attention D. well-treated customers promote business 47. The writer mentions “phone rage” (Paragraph 3) to show that ___________. A. customers often use phones to express their anger B. people still prefer to buy goods online C. customer care becomes more demanding D. customers rely on their phones to obtain services 48. If a manager should show his empathy (Paragraph 6), what would he probably say? A. “I know how upset you must be.” B. “I appreciate your understanding.” C. “I’m sorry for the delay.” D. “I know it’s our fault.” 49. Customer delight is important for airlines because ___________. A. their telephone style remains unchanged B. they are more likely to meet with complaints C. the services cost them a lot of money D the policies can be applied to their staff 50. Which of the following is conveyed in this article? A. Face-to-face service creates comfortable feelings among customers. B. Companies that promise more will naturally attract more customers. C. A company should promise less but do more in a competitive market. D. Customer delight is more important for airlines than for banks. D To put it simply, stress can be the father of growth, while a crisis can be the mother of innovation. The notion that great good can emerge from great adversity (逆境) is as old as the legend of the great phoenix (凤凰), who not only arises but soars to new heights from its own ashes. In 1598, William Shakespeare penned the play As You Like It. One of the most famous lines from that play is spoken in Act 2 Scene 1 by Duke Senior, “Sweet are the uses of adversity which, like the toad (癞蛤蟆), ugly and venomous, wears yet a precious jewel in his head.” Even 500 years ago, the potential value of adversity was recognized, not by a great healer, but by a great playwright. Can this really be the case? Fast-forward to the great silent film star Mary Pickford. She was called the most popular actress in the world in the 1910s and 1920s. Failing to continue acting with the advent of the “talkies”(movies with recorded sound), she co-founded the film company United Artists. Shifting her talents to producing and directing, she became the most powerful woman in the entertainment industry. She once noted, “You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.” Rather than fear and try to avoid adversity, perhaps we should accept the inevitability (必然) of adversity and prepare for it. Indeed, positive things can emerge from adversity. Adversity reveals true opportunities for those preparing to take advantage. Dr. John Krumboltz’s happenstance theory states that career and life development is best fostered by preparing for opportunities that you may not know even exist in the current moment. Numerous unpredictable factors are potentially shaping the future. These include the crises adversity brings. In Friedrich Nietzsche’s book, Behold the Man, the German philosopher writes that a person who has “turned out well” could be recognized by the ability to take advantage of and prosper from adversity, just as he wrote before, “What does not kill him makes him stronger.” So, the next time adversity enters your life, will you run from it, or will you embrace it and use it as a step ping stone to greater happiness and success? 51. Why does the author quote the line from Shakespeare’s play? A. To emphasize the great wisdom of Shakespeare. B. To highlight the beauty of Shakespeare’s language. C. To challenge the conventional belief regarding adversity. D. To show the long-standing recognition of adversity’s value. 52. What is conveyed through Mary Pickford’s story? A. Fame can block one’s achievements. B. Strong determination overcomes adversity. C. Accepting adversity results in positive outcomes. D. Courage in the face of challenges leads to success. 53. What is the idea behind Krumboltz’s happenstance theory? A Embracing uncertainty. B. Managing life’s challenges. C. Seizing hidden opportunities. D. Focusing on personal growth. 54. What is the author’s attitude towards adversity? A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful. 55. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Finding value and opportunity in facing adversity. B. Stress as the primary cause of growth and innovation. C. How to avoid adversity and negative experiences in life. D. Historical figures who failed to overcome adversity effectively. The story of Christopher Reeve’s life is one that is almost impossible to imagine---from a wildly successful Hollywood career, to the horror of life-threatening injury; Reeve experienced both. Thus, not only is he known as a superhero in the Superman films, but he is also regarded as a superhero to many in real life. He starred in his first school play at the age of eight, and was eventually given the lead role in a Superman film. He starred in four Superman films from 1978 to 1987. His roles in these films had given him the opportunity to be a real-life superman, and he soon gained a reputation for raising awareness for good causes. He worked with organizations such as Save the Children to help those most in need. Unfortunately, in 1995, a disaster struck Reeve. While horseback riding, he was thrown off his horse and broke his neck. His injuries were so severe that he had no movement or feeling in his body at all and even needed a machine to help him breathe. At first, his doctors did not believe that he would survive. During this time, Reeve felt like he had lost all hope. He wished that he was dead and even thought of ending his own life. He fell into a depression which lasted for many months. It was only due to the ongoing support of his wife, parents and friends that he eventually found the will to live again. For the years that followed he focused his attention on his goal of one day walking again. With a new sense of energy and commitment, Reeve undertook an intense exercise programme to help him achieve this goal. He engaged in a wide range of exercises designed to rebuild muscle, and made remarkable progress. Shortly after, he managed to return to his film career by directing, producing and even starring in films. He also wrote a biography and returned to his charity work. Reeve became a passionate and energetic advocate for people with back injuries and disabilities, raising millions of dollars in support of medical research. “What I do is based on powers we all have inside us…and you don’t have to be a ‘superman’ to do it.” His positive attitude inspired many people who were stuck in illness. 56. According to the passage, what experience made Christopher Reeve special? (no more than 15 words) 57. Before he got injured, what did Reeve do that made him a superman outside the film? (no more than 15 words) 58. What does Para 4 mainly tell us? (no more than 15 words) 59. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph tell us?(no more than 20 words) 60.
