My dad has watermelon-size muscles and enormous hands. He doesn’t seem like the kind of person who bakes great bread, but he does. Every Saturday he bakes silently by himself. The rest of the week, he’s a car mechanic whose job involves complex lifting, tightening, shaking and hitting. People tend to think of cars as metallic (金属的) members of the family, and Dad seldom lets them down.
I kind of understand Dad’s baking routine. Though he’s into the work, customers’ expectation and heavy work weigh him down. When working on the dough (生面团), he returns to a life of ease.
I had been feeling stressed out myself since I didn’t qualify for the swim team. I thought Dad had found that and he asked me to help and headed to the kitchen.
Though I was surprised, I followed him. Dad took out his mixing bowl, telling me to mix ingredients while he added them. Then he showed me how to process the dough-repeatedly stretching, pounding and folding it. It took ten minutes and a surprising amount of energy to finish. But what came next was harder and more surprising — doing nothing. We put the dough back into the bowl. It took an hour to rise. Then we pressed and stretched it, put it into pans and waited another hour for it to double. “It’s hard to resist putting the dough directly into the oven, but if you do, the bread will be tough,” Dad explained.
When the dough rose at its own pace, time seemed to slow down. We could do nothing to speed that. As I accepted that, I stopped watching the clock and started enjoying the time. My father taught me how to bake, but I learned something more — appreciate the slow pace of time and let the bread rise.
24. What can we learn about the author’s father?
A. He is very talkative.
B. He takes no interest in baking.
C. He is expert at his work.
D. He doesn’t like fixing cars.
25. Why does the author’s father make bread every Saturday?
A. To get relaxed.
B. To kill the time.
C. To pursue his hobby.
D. To learn a new skill.
26. What is the most difficult part during baking bread according to the author?
A. Measuring ingredients.
B Waiting for the dough to rise.
C. Processing the dough.
D. Controlling the temperature of the oven.
27. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Secrets of Baking B. Influence of My Father
C. A Bread Lesson D. A Surprising Leisure Time

Cows love having an open area of grassland to graze on. But in some parts of the world, this is only feasible during the summer. In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. Being stuck inside is not always pleasant for the cattle, and their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production.
For this reason, some cattle owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specifically. The program simulates grassland in summer and was designed specifically for the way that cows get color and light. According to the National Library of Medicine, cattle see shades of red the easiest but have a hard time distinguishing between blue and green.
Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia — where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production, which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.
Cattle owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray, Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021. When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the emotional well-being of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it gives them an emotional boost. They are less stressed,” he said.
The technology is now being passed around the world. According to the BBC, the headsets were made specifically for the “structural features of cow heads” by vets, and the animals were shown a “unique summer field simulation program”. The familiar sight of an area of grassland is enough to improve the mood of the entire herd.
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a link between a cow’s emotional state and its milk production. They stated, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the quantity of milk increases markedly.”
28. What does the underlined word “feasible” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Influential. B. Possible. C. Necessary. D. Meaningful.
29. What’s the result of cows’ wearing the VR headsets?
A. They could distinguish between blue and green.
B. Their milk production rose accordingly.
C. Their physical health improved greatly.
D. They could adapt to winter easily.
30. What concept is behind the VR headset program?
A. High tech is necessary in the dairy field.
B. A silent environment helps cows stay healthy.
C. Natural grassland is better for the milk quality.
D. A cow with good moods can produce more milk.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The emotional difficulties cows face in cold winter months.
B. The benefits of keeping cows in a large farm building in winter.
C. VR headsets improve cows’ emotional well-being and milk production.
D. The development of VR technology for animals living on the grassland.

Growing up, I washed my hair every day. I was washing my body every day, so I thought I should wash my hair daily too. Then, in my teens, a classmate with hair much thicker than mine told me shampoo (洗发剂) was terrible — it made your hair dry and fragile (易损的). “Use shampoo as little as possible,” she advised.
But is shampoo actually bad for your hair? How often should one be using it? And which type of shampoo should one use? We asked experts.
“I don’t believe that shampoo is bad for hair,” says YeneADamtew, a hairstylist. “Cleaning your hair is important for keeping healthy hair.”
Dr Deeptej Singh says that it is true that shampoo can wash away “natural oils that protect our hair”, but there is a “happy medium”. The best solution is a Goldilocks approach: “Don’t overwash or underwash.” Generally, the range is somewhere between once a day and once a week.
“Each person’s shampoo plan will depend on many factors. These include hair texture (质地), whether it’s chemically treated, activity level and weather,” says Dr Elizabeth, a hair health expert. If you have very fine or thin hair, you may need to wash more often, while those with thick hair may need to wash less often. Color-treated hair should also be washed less often, as these treatments can make the hair more fragile. Deciding when to wash your hair depends on a number of personal factors. But going too long between washes, especially for those hair with much oil, can also harm our hair.
32. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By listing the figures. B. By sharing an experience.
C. By reporting an event. D. By solving the problems.
33. Which of the following best explain “a Goldilocks approach”?
A. Less is more. B. The more, the better.
C. Suit is the best. D. Practice makes perfect.
34. Which of the following may Dr Elizabeth agree with?
A. Hair with much oil should be washed more often.
B Color-treated hair should be washed more often.
C. Thin hair should be washed with less shampoo.
D. Thick hair should be washed with less shampoo.
35. What will the author continue to write in the following text?
A. Is Shampoo bad for your hair?
B. What is the correct way to wash hair?
C. How often should people wash their hair?
D. What sort of shampoo should people use?

Snakes are the last thing you want to find in your yard or garden, much less in your house. Unfortunately, there’s no sure way to keep snakes out of your building. But don’t despair. ___36___
Keep bushes and grass around your house trimmed up (修剪的).
The first thing that homeowners should do is to keep their grass cut to a short or reasonable length. Snakes are careful about traveling across trimmed bushes and grass because these plants expose them to predator (捕食者). ___37___
Remove hiding places.
Reduce or remove places where snakes like to hide. One of these is under bushes. In addition, ground cover plants also provide cover for snakes. ___38___ Another landscape feature to be aware of is large rocks piled on top of each other. Avoid these because that gives snakes an excellent place to stay cool and hide.
___39___
Homeowners should check the foundation to look for possible entry points for snakes. Snakes will get under your house if they can. Be sure to seal cracks or openings that a snake could get through. Another access point for snakes could be a door. Block these openings.
Remove food.
Snakes are carnivores that feed on meat, so they are seeking for mice, rats and even birds. There are things homeowners can do to help prevent attracting them and snakes. ___40___ That will bring in the animals, which will bring in the snakes. It’s okay to feed your pets outdoors, just remember to remove any uneaten food.
A. Block entries to the house.
B. What to do if you see a snake.
C. There are things that you can do to help.
D. Try to limit the use of these plants in your garden.
E. One is to avoid leaving an available cat or dog food outdoors.

G. So it makes sense to trim bushes and grass around your house regularly.

I was in Philadelphia for a conference when I saw an ad in the hotel. A nearby theater was showing a documentary about several local animal shelters that were helping to save abandoned dogs across the country. I love animals, and I felt an urge to go to this fundraising event. However, none of my co-workers would go with me, and I was worried about walking on the street alone at night.
I resigned myself to spending the evening in my hotel room, but as soon as I got back to my room I felt restless and bored. The theater where the event was taking place was only about five blocks from the hotel, and the area around the hotel didn’t seem particularly dangerous. So, I decided to brave it. I gathered up my wallet and room key and set off.
It was already getting dark and the streets were nearly deserted. I managed to find the street the theater was on, but when I turned the corner, I stopped in shock. In front of the theater were a group of bikers-very big, tough-looking bikers. They blocked my only path and their appearance suggested they were part of an infamous street gang (帮派).
I’ve known lots of motorcycle enthusiasts and most are nice people. However, in this case, I was a woman all alone, in a strange neighborhood, at night. Warning bells began to sound in my head, and my heart was pounding. Was I at the right theater? Had I misread the date of the event?
A sign outside the theater told me that I was in the right place on the right evening. Nevertheless, I wondered if I should rush back to my hotel instead of walking through that crowd of bikers. I finally decided that I would be safer inside the theater, where I could meet many animal rescue groups. Hopefully, the bikers would have gone away by the time the film was over.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150 个左右;
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside.

When the film began, I realized that the bikers were not what I had feared.

C 18. A 19. B 20. B
W: During World War II, every one in three American men left home to serve in the military between 1941 and 1945, and women worked in jobs out of the home. These women not only continued to manage their households, but they also worked in factories, labs, power plants and etc. The war completely changed the responsibility of women in the workforce during these years — and this completely changed how they dressed. Because women were doing more tasks requiring labor like driving trucks. Safety and practicality became more important over looking attractive. Working women put away their high-heeled shoes and silk dresses and wore cotton shirts and blue jeans instead. During the war, certain materials were saved for military purposes. And to use less of cloth, clothes makers began designing shorter skirts and slimmer clothing. By the end of the war, over six million American women had joined the workforce, and nearly one out of every four married women worked outside the home. Although many were replaced by men once the men returned from war, working out of the home changed people’s views of what women could do.

A He is very talkative.
B. Waiting for the dough to rise.
C. Processing the dough.
D. Controlling the temperature of the oven.
27. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Secrets of Baking B. Influence of My Father
C. A Bread Lesson D. A Surprising Leisure Time
C 25. A 26. B 27. C

根据文章第一段“People tend to think of cars as metallic (金属的) members of the family, and Dad seldom lets them down.(人们往往把汽车当作家里的金属成员,而爸爸很少让他们失望)”可知,人们往往把汽车当作家里的金属成员,而爸爸很少让他们失望。
根据文章第二段“Though he’s into the work, customers’ expectation and heavy work weigh him down. When working on the dough (生面团), he returns to a life of ease.(虽然他热爱自己的工作,但顾客的期望和繁重的工作还是让他感到压力很大。而在处理生面团的时候,他又回到了轻松惬意的生活状态)”可知,虽然父亲热爱他的汽车修理工作,但顾客的期望和繁重的工作让他感到压力很大。而当他处理生面团时,他又回到了轻松惬意的生活状态。由此可知,父亲每周六烤面包是为了让自己放松,缓解工作带来的压力。故选A。
根据文章第四段“But what came next was harder and more surprising — doing nothing. We put the dough back into the bowl. It took an hour to rise. Then we pressed and stretched it, put it into pans and waited another hour for it to double. “It’s hard to resist putting the dough directly into the oven, but if you do, the bread will be tough,” Dad explained.(但接下来的事情更难,也更让人惊讶——什么都不做。
根据文章最后一段“My father taught me how to bake, but I learned something more — appreciate the slow pace of time and let the bread rise.(我爸爸教我如何烤面包,但我学到了更多的东西——要欣赏时间的缓慢节奏,让面包慢慢发酵)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了作者因为未入选游泳队而感到压力大,父亲邀请作者一起烤面包。

31 What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The emotional difficulties cows face in cold winter months.
B. The benefits of keeping cows in a large farm building in winter.
C. VR headsets improve cows’ emotional well-being and milk production.
D. The development of VR technology for animals living on the grassland.
B 29. B 30. D 31. C

根据第一段中“In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. (在冬季,天气可能会变得太冷,以至于奶牛无法安全地待在室外,因此它们会被安置在大型的农场建筑内以保暖)”可知,在某些地方只有夏天才能为牛提供开阔的草地区域,即这种做法只有在夏天才可能实现。因此,划线词feasible在这里的意思最接近于选项B“Possible (可能的)”。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia — where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production, which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day. (来自俄罗斯莫斯科一个农场的报告——那里最初是由兽医开发出VR头盔的——在2019年发现,使用VR头盔的奶牛焦虑减少,情绪得到改善。这导致了牛奶产量的增加,从每天5.8加仑增加到了7加仑)”可知,佩戴VR头盔的结果是奶牛的产奶量相应地增加了。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a connection between a cow’s mood and its milk production. They said, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the amount of milk increases greatly.”(俄罗斯联邦农业部表示,研究表明奶牛的情绪与其牛奶产量之间存在联系。他们说,“不同国家的奶牛农场的例子表明,在平静的环境中,牛奶的产量会大大增加。”)”可知,奶牛的情绪与牛奶产量之间存在联系,再结合全文内容,可以推断出VR眼镜程序背后的概念是奶牛情绪良好时能够产生更多的牛奶。故选D。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Being kept inside is not always enjoyable for the cows, and their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production. (对奶牛来说,被关在室内并不总是愉快的,它们的不愉快与产奶量减少密切相关)”以及第二段“For this reason, some cow owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specially. The program simulated grassland in summer and was designed for the way that cows get color and light. (出于这个原因,一些奶牛主人给他们的奶牛安装了VR头戴设备,专门运行一个程序。该程序模拟了夏季的草地,是根据奶牛获得颜色和光线的方式设计的)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了VR技术可以改善奶牛的情绪健康和产奶量。故选C项。

B. Color-treated hair should be washed more often.
B 33. C 34. A 35. D

Then, in my teens, a classmate with hair much thicker than mine told me shampoo (洗发剂) was terrible — it made your hair dry and fragile (易损的). “Use shampoo as little as possible,” she advised.(从小到大,我每天都洗头。
根据第四段中“The best solution is a Goldilocks approach: “Don’t overwash or underwash.” Generally, the range is somewhere between once a day and once a week.(最好的解决方案是Goldilocks approach:‘不要洗得过多或过少。’一般来说,范围在一天一次到一周一次之间。)”可知,a Goldilocks approach指的是头发不宜洗的过多或过少,适度、适合是最好的。故选C项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一句“But going too long between washes, especially for those hair with much oil, can also harm our hair.(但是洗头间隔时间过长,尤其是对那些发质油腻的头发来说,也会伤害我们的头发。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段“But is shampoo actually bad for your hair? How often should one be using it? And which type of shampoo should one use? We asked experts.(但是洗发水真的对头发有害吗?应该多久使用一次?应该用哪种洗发水呢?我们询问了专家。)”可知,作者共提出了三个问题。第三段的句子““I don’t believe that shampoo is bad for hair,” says YeneADamtew, a hairstylist.(‘我不相信洗发水对头发有害,’发型师叶尼·亚当特说)”回答了第一个问题。第四段的句子“The best solution is a Goldilocks approach: “Don’t overwash or underwash.” Generally, the range is somewhere between once a day and once a week.(最好的解决办法是Goldilocks的方法:‘不要洗得过多或过少。’一般来说,范围在一天一次到一周一次之间。)”和最后一段的内容回答的第二个问题。第三个问题还没有答案,所以,在下面的文章中,作者将继续探讨第三个问题“Which type of shampoo should one use?(应该用哪种洗发水呢?)”。故选D项。

I resigned myself to spending the evening in my hotel room but as soon as I got back to my room I felt restless and bored.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150 个左右;
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside.

When the film began, I realized that the bikers were not what I had feared.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside. They were chatting loudly and seemed to fill every corner of the place. My heart sank even further. I quickly found an empty seat in the back row, trying to make myself as inconspicuous as possible. I clutched my bag tightly, constantly glancing around, praying that nothing bad would happen. Every now and then, I peeked at the bikers, wondering what they were doing here. Were they going to cause trouble? The tension in the air was palpable, and I regretted my decision to come alone.
When the film began, I realized that the bikers were not what I had feared. They had come to support the fundraiser for the local animal shelters. As the documentary unfolded, showing the plight of the abandoned dogs, I saw many of the bikers wiping away tears. They were as moved as I was by the heartwarming and heartbreaking stories. During the intermission, some of them even came over to me, smiling kindly and asking if I was enjoying the film. Their tough exteriors hid big, soft hearts. I felt ashamed of my initial fear and was truly grateful that I had decided to come. We spent the rest of the evening sharing our love for animals and discussing ways to help.
