Teaching and Learning Design Book3 Unit2 Morals and Virtues 教学设计 Period 5 Teaching and learning contents: Listening and Talking Comprehensive teaching and learning objectives: By the end of this period, the students will have been able to: 1) Practise listening to a radio show about the importance of kindness; 2) Learn how to talk about the importance of kindness and practice telling a story of showing or receiving kindness; Teaching and learning important points: Listening comprehension and telling a story of showing or receiving kindness. Teaching and learning difficult points: Listening comprehension and telling a story of showing or receiving kindness. Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Review Activity 1 Review 1. Revise the usages of the present participle used as the adverbial and the object compliment. 2. Check the answers to the grammar exercises in reference book. Step 2 Listening Activity 2 Pre-listening 1. Enjoy a song named “Chain of Love” and try to get the main idea of the song (the story told in the song). And introduce the background information about it if necessary. 2. Learn about the meaning of new words in listening. chain n.一连串(人或事);链子;链条 cafe n. 咖啡馆;小餐馆 waitress n. (餐馆的)女服务员;女侍者 pregnant adj.怀孕的;妊娠的 Activity 3 While-listening 1. Go through the listening questions. And then listen to a radio show and answer these questions. 1) What is the name of the radio show? The name of the radio show is “Rush Hour Show”. 2) What does “paying it forward” mean? “Paying it forward” means when you receive kindness from someone, you go out and show kindness to another person. 3) What does the guest want the listeners to do? The guest wants the audience to join the chain of kindness and “pay it forward”. 2. Listen to the radio show again and fill in the blanks to complete the story. Answers: has broken down; show kindness; tired; hundred-dollar bill; leaving, surprise; husband; started. Activity 4 Post-listening Listen to the recording to understand it better, try to answer the following questions and then try to use the information to reconstruct the listening text by summarizing the main content of the text. 1. What is the name of the guest? 2. Apart from the story of the song “The Chain of Love”, what other example does the guest give of paying it forward? 3. How long did this chain of kindness last? 4. How many people paid for the coffee of the people behind them? 5. What will we never know? Step 3 Talking Activity 5 Learning how to tell a story 1. Learn about the strategy to tell a story. When telling a story, you can start by saying what the story is about. Give the background to the listeners, including when and where it took place. Say what happened step by step and be sure to use correct tenses. Do not forget to use sequencing words or linking words. Finally, finish your story by saying why it is important to you or why you remember it. 2. Go through the useful expressions and examples. once upon a time/long ago first of all/then/after that/later/ finally so/however/although/but I remember this happened when I was… I was on my way to… I was sitting /…when… It was a…day /morning… There were…on the street … 时间顺序:afterwards, meanwhile, at last, in the end, eventually 空间顺序:next to, far from, on the left, in front of 逻辑关系:otherwise, nevertheless, as a result, therefore, furthermore, in addition, as well as 总结:in a word, in short, on the whole, to sum up, in brief 3. Talk about the outline or basic structure of a story. Introduction (background; when and where the story took place) Narrative (what happened step by step) Conclusion (why it is important or why you remember it) Activity 6 Telling a story 1. Think of a story of showing or receiving kindness, either your own story or one that you have heard of. Then share it with your group. Try to use the words, expressions, strategy and outline introduced above. 2. Show a sample for reference. Once, I did not have money to go to university, and so someone paid my tuition that term. This happened when I was eighteen. My grandmother had just died, and this had caused my family great expense, so we had no extra money at all. I did everything I could to raise the money, but it seemed hopeless. Then the morning that the tuition was due, someone gave my mother an envelope with the money. It wasn’t their money, and they wouldn’t say who it was from. It seems that some stranger had heard about my money problem and decided to help. This meant so much to me, as without it I would not have been able to go to university. 3. Take turns to tell a story of showing or receiving kindness in pairs or in group of four. 4. Discuss your opinion on the meaning of kindness. Step 5 Evaluation and summary Activity 7 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects. 1. How is your listening comprehension? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 2. How is your story telling? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 3. How do you understand “A small act of kindness can make a big difference”? Activity 8 Summary Summarize the main contents of this period briefly. Homework: 1. Write the story you have told in class 2. Complete the exercises in reference book. 3.
