Activity 2 Pre-viewing
1. Lead in the topic by talking about the Lantern Festival and learning about the traditions and celebrations of the festival.
How much do you know about the Lantern Festival?
The Lantern Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. The custom of joyfully celebrating the Lantern Festival began in ancient times and still has great influence on Chinese people today.
Significance. Began over 2000 years ago, the festival has developed many meanings. It celebrates family reunions. Some also call this the “true” Chinese Valentine’s Day.
Lighting the lanterns. Lanterns are the most notable part of the festival. People would gather in their yards and give offerings. Throughout history, countless variations of lanterns have been created.
Dragon dance. Dragon dance has a history almost as long as Chinese culture itself. The performers create impressive formations to the beat of Chinese drums and cymbals (铙钹). Dragon is an ancient symbol, which can pray for rain and eliminate (消除) the evil.
Food: Tangyuan. The trademark food of the Lantern Festival is called yuanxiao/tangyuan. They are glutinous rice dumplings with sweet fillings made of syrup, red bean paste, black sesame paste or more. They can be steamed or fried, but usually boiled and served in hot water.
Lantern riddles. Lantern riddles are riddles that were written on the lanterns that are displayed during the Chinese Lantern Festival or Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival and so on. The full name of Lantern Riddles are “riddles written on lanterns”.

Interesting events in history
The fire dragon dance in Puzhai Town in Guangdong Province has a history of over 300 years.
The Lantern Festival was known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day in the past. It was a good day for lovers to meet.
Many ancient poets wrote poems about the festival, which describe happy moments and also the stories of young lovers.

The Lantern Festival takes place on the fifteenth day of the first month of the lunar year. During this time, lanterns will be hung throughout the city, creating a festive atmosphere. Many of these lanterns will have riddles written on them. People also ear yuanxiao or tangyuan, as these symbolized reunion, harmony, and happiness. In the past, the festival was known as Chinese Valentine’s Day, and so in ancient times poets wrote poems about the festival telling stories of young lovers.

Facts about the Zhuang People’s Folk Song Festival
Time: on the third day of the third month of the Chinese lunar year
Place: In the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Minority group: The Zhuang People
Festival activities: Sing songs,
Local festival food: five-colored sticky rice, duck in lemon sauce
Facts about the Dai People’s Water Festival
Time: 13-15 April (the Dai New Year)
Place: Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province
Minority Group: The Dai People
Festival activities: Splashing and spraying water on each other, dragon boat races, floating lanterns
Local festival food: ghost chicken, lemongrass grilled fish, pineapple purple rice

Zhuang People is the largest minority among Chinese minorities. The third day of the third month on Chinese lunar calendar is Zhuang People’s traditional folk song festival. Zhuang People will eat five-colored sticky rice, sing songs, hold bull fighting and throw embroidered balls.
On March 3rd in Chinese lunar calendar, Zhuang people dressed with traditional clothes to get together to sing. Young girls who are not married can throw an embroidered ball to choose a husband telling by sing songs. The man will come to visit the girl in the second day.
There are also a large-scale bamboo dance for a lot of people. Nowadays, Zhuang people’s Song Festival is more and more popular and magnificent. The festival plays an important role in Zhuang people’s life.
Five-colored sticky rice is the most famous food. It is a symbol of good luck, happiness and a golden harvest. Jiaoye ciba (glutinous rice cake with banana leaves), round glutinous rice cake (Nuomi Bing), chicken in natural juice (Baizhanji) and duck in lemon sauce (Ningmengya) are popular local during the festival.
Step 4 Project 2: Making a poster about festival food recipes

1. Read the recipe—The Laba Festival and Laba Porridge, and learn about the basic elements of a recipe.
2. In groups, collect some information to make a poster about festival food recipes by following the example.
A sample:
Beijing-style Zongzi for the Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year, in late May or early June. The festival’s traditional food is zongzi.
Possible Ingredients and Steps:
· 5 cups of sticky rice
· 2.5 cups of fresh sweet jujubes (red dates)
· 50 reed leaves
· string
1. Soak the rice for two hours.
2. Take one or two leaves together and make a funnel shape with them.
3. Put in one large spoon full of sticky rice, then add two or three jujubes. Cover with another large spoon full of rice.
4. Roll the leaves around the rice until it looks like a triangular packet. Tie it together with a string.
5. Put the zongzi in a pressure cooker and cook for 1.5 hours.
