On July 1, 1882, a brief notice appeared in the Portsmouth Evening News. It read simply, “Dr. Doyle begs to inform that he has moved to Bush Villas, Elm Grove, next to the Bush Hotel.” So was announced the newly-formed medical practice of a 23-year-old graduate from the University of Edinburgh — Arthur Conan Doyle. But the town of Southsca, the Portsmouth suburb in which Doyle opened his office, already had several well-established physicians. While he waited for patients, Dr. Doyle found himself with a great deal of time on his hands. Then he began writing short stories, historical novels, and whatever would keep him busy.
By the beginning of 1886, his practice had grown to the point of providing him with a respectable income, and he had managed to have a few pieces published. In March, he began writing the tale that would give birth to one of literature’s most enduring figures. Although he was impressed by the fictional detectives created by Edgar Allan Poe, Emile Gaboriau, and Wilkie Collins, Doyle believed that he could create a different kind of detective, one for whom detection was a science rather than an art. As a model, he used one of his medical school professors, Joseph Bell. As Bell’s assistant, Doyle had seen how, by exercising his powers of observation and asking a few questions, Bell had been able not only to handle his patients’ complaints but also to accurately determine their professions and backgrounds.
A detective who applied similar intellectual powers to the solving of criminal mysteries could be a compelling (引人注目的) figure, Doyle felt. At first titled A Tangled Skein, the story was to be told by his detective’s companion, Dr. Ormond Sacker, and the detective himself was to be named Sherrinford Holmes. But by April, 1886, when Doyle finished the manuscript (手稿), the title had become A Study in Scarlet, the narrator Dr. John H.Watson, and the detective Mr. Sherlock Holmes.
24. What did the notice reveal about Doyle?
A. He felt fond of the Bush Hotel. B. He was too busy to see his patients.
C. He settled into Bush Villas as a physician. D. He was well-known in the town of Southsca.
25. Why was Sherlock Holmes different from other detectives?
A. He conducted his investigations on a scientific basis.
B. He not only practiced medicine but also solved crimes.
C. His cases were reported in the Portsmouth Evening News.
D. His stories were based on the experiences of a real individual.
26. What was Bell like in the eyes of Doyle?
A. He had a fragile relationship with his patients. B. He had extraordinary observational abilities.
C. He was a professor with a unique background. D. He had a lot of experience in writing.
27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The popularity of A Study in Scarlet. B. Why Doyle wrote A Tangled Skein.
C. The birth of Sherlock Holmes. D. How to name a detective.
【答案】24. C 25. A 26. B 27. C
【解析】

【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Although he was impressed by the fictional detectives created by Edgar Allan Poe, Emile Gaboriau, and Wilkie Collins, Doyle believed that he could create a different kind of detective, one for whom detection was a science rather than an art.(虽然Edgar Allan Poe, Emile Gaboriau和Wilkie Collins创作的虚构侦探给他留下了深刻的印象,但道尔相信他可以创造出一种不同的侦探,对其来说,侦探是一门科学,而不是一门艺术)”可推知,道尔所创作的福尔摩斯这一侦探角色是以科学为依据进行侦查的。故选A项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“As a model, he used one of his medical school professors, Joseph Bell. Do you remember the bosses in old movies who shout things to their secretaries and let them write them down? Well, what about writing with your voice? This could also be a great advantage to those who lack mobility or type badly. Today, you can even command devices like smartphones or use wired home devices with your voice instead of your hands.
But writing with your voice raises several interesting questions. How easy is it? Human speech involves a lot more mistakes than you may think. The first draft of a piece of writing is a lot more usable than the “first draft” of a bit of speech. Anyone who is doubtful about that might try listening to an interview. It will quickly become obvious that even gifted speakers make lots of mistakes.
Another question turning speech into writing raises is its artistic touch. How would writing change if more people spoke their writing rather than typed it? Chances are that at the very least they would come up with many more short sentences and more concrete language, which is good. But they would probably also rely on prepared phrases and cliches (陈词滥调) a lot more often, which would definitely be a bad thing. Good writing requires slow thought, which is not available when you are speaking quickly.
In fact, this column has not been written but dictated. Here are some facts about how it will read. The first one is that the literal accuracy of the dictation software is extremely high. In other words, there aren’t many cases where the software has heard one word incorrectly and transcribed (转录) another. The other one is that the readability of this column is rather bad. The blame is not with the technology, which turns out to be rather good. Speaking into writing relies on a much better human brain than the one we currently possess. Writing is hard. There’s a reason it can’t be done at the speed of speech, in real time.
28. What does the author try to stress in paragraph 1?
A. A new way to help secretaries type. B. A few scenes taken from old movies.
C. The benefits of voice technology. D. The future of voice-controlled devices.
29. What does the word “that” underlined in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Writing is better than speaking in terms of errors.
B. Human speech has fewer mistakes than expected.
C. Gifted speakers are not always good at writing.
D. Mistakes do not matter in ordinary speech.
30. What will happen to writing when more people speak their writing?
A. It will be harder to understand. B. It will result in fewer phrases.
C. Its language will be literary. D. Its style will be destroyed.
31. What does the author think of speaking into writing?
A. It lacks accuracy. B. It is far from practical.
C. It requires better software. D. It makes our brain smarter.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. B

根据第一段中“Well, what about writing with your voice? This could also be a great advantage to those who lack mobility or type badly. Today, you can even command devices like smartphones or use wired home devices with your voice instead of your hands.(那用你的声音写作呢?这对那些缺乏行动能力或打字不好的人来说也是一个很大的优势。今天,你甚至可以用声音来控制智能手机或有线家庭设备,而不是用手。)”可知,作者在第一段通过举例(帮助行动不便者、替代手动操作等)强调语音技术的优势。故选C项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Human speech involves a lot more mistakes than you may think. The first draft of a piece of writing is a lot more usable than the “first draft” of a bit of speech.(人类语言中包含的错误比你想象的要多得多。一篇文章的初稿比一段演讲的“初稿”要有用得多。)”可知,人类说话比想象中包含更多错误,写作的初稿比说话的“初稿”更可用,即写作在错误方面比说话更有优势。“that”指代的就是前面所说的“在错误方面写作比说话更好”这一观点。故选A项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Chances are that at the very least they would come up with many more short sentences and more concrete language, which is good. But they would probably also rely on prepared phrases and cliches (陈词滥调) a lot more often, which would definitely be a bad thing. Good writing requires slow thought, which is not available when you are speaking quickly.(至少他们可能会想出更多的短句和更具体的语言,这是件好事。但他们也可能更多地依赖于准备好的短语和陈词滥调,这绝对是一件坏事。好的写作需要慢速思考,当你说得很快时,这是不可能的。)”可知,语音写作可能导致短句和具体语言(优点),但依赖陈词滥调会破坏写作质量,因此风格受损。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The other one is that the readability of this column is rather bad. The blame is not with the technology, which turns out to be rather good. Speaking into writing relies on a much better human brain than the one we currently possess. Writing is hard. There's a reason it can’t be done at the speed of speech, in real time.(另一个原因是这个专栏的可读性很差。问题不在于技术,因为事实证明技术相当不错。将语言转化为文字依赖于一个比我们目前拥有的更好的人类大脑。写作很难。它不能以说话的速度实时完成是有原因的。)” 可知,作者认为语音写作虽然软件准确性高,但可读性差,语音写作需要比我们现有更好的大脑,写作很难实时以说话的速度完成,说明语音写作不切实际。故选B项。

For 43 years, Sistering has been providing basic services to women experiencing homelessness in Toronto. In the early days, Sistering was created to make resources that could be used by women and children who only had to stay in emergency shelters (应急避难所) overnight. During the day, they had nowhere to go and were often left on the street. It was clear that for homeless women, there needed to be a daytime space that would provide them with resources, a meal, and, most importantly, support to find stability (稳定). Today, the problem of women's homelessness in Toronto is getting more and more serious. The lack of affordable housing, the impact of COVID-19, and cuts to social services have all led to a growing homeless population of women now close to 10,000.
The organization offers a range of services to help women find stability. All services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One of Sistering's most important strengths is its promise to treat each woman who comes through its doors with respect and understanding. The staff says that the road taken by the homeless is often long and difficult. They work with women to know their needs and help them create a plan to move forward.
Despite the services that Sistering provides, the need for resources for women experiencing homelessness in Toronto continues to grow. Sistering understands that they cannot reach every woman in need by themselves, which is why they are expanding (扩大) their services through Mobile Outreach and the creation of satellite services around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The Mobile Outreach program brings Sistering's services directly to women in need in their communities.
If you are interested in supporting Sistering's work, there are many ways to do so. Donations of money, time, and resources are always welcome, and you can also help by spreading the word about the services they offer. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of homeless women in Toronto and create a place of hope for those who need it most.
32. What do we know about Sistering in its early days?

Every year on the Lunar New Year’s Eve, all my family members get together to have a family reunion dinner, after which we enjoy the CCTV Spring Festival Gala until the clock strikes twelve. The school year was coming to a close, and the air was filled with anticipation for the upcoming annual school fair. Our class had eagerly decided to host a bake sale, with each student ready to contribute their favorite recipes.
Spirits were high. Every spare moment was devoted to perfecting the art of baking, from experimenting with different flavors to mastering the art of cake decorations. Our classroom became a hub of activity, filled with the sweet scent of freshly baked goods and the sound of laughter and chatter.
The day of the fair finally arrived and our table was beautifully decorated with a mouthwatering baked goods. There were freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, warm and crispy, alongside homemade fruit pies. The attractive scent was irresistible, and it wasn't long before a long line of students and parents formed, their eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
However, as the morning wore on, we couldn't help but notice that the neighboring class’s booth (摊位) was appealing to a significantly larger crowd. There was a buzz of excitement surrounding their table, and it was clear that they were onto something special.
Among our class, a sense of healthy competition began to emerge. Sarah, our natural leader, suggested we step up our game. “We need to find out what they're doing differently and improve our booth,” she said with determination. Out of curiosity, we sent our most inquisitive member, Mark, to investigate.
Soon, Mark returned with good news. “They've got a ‘Taste of the World’ theme going on over there,” Mark reported. “They’re serving up a variety of international desserts, and it’s quite the hit!”
We were intrigued by the idea and asked Mark for more details. He went on to explain that the students had gone the extra mile by dressing up in traditional costumes from the countries they were representing. “It's like a cultural feast for the senses,” he added with enthusiasm.

【答案】Inspired by their creativity, we began to brainstorm ways to enhance our own booth. After a heated discussion, we decided to adopt a similar theme, but with a unique twist. Our booth would become a 'Tour of Sweets: A Journey Through Time'. Each member would present a historical sweet from a different era, ranging from ancient civilizations to modern innovations. We worked tirelessly to prepare for the transformation. Our booth was adorned with ancient Egyptian decorations for the earliest known desserts, and Renaissance-style tablecloths for the sweets of that period. We even set up a small 'time machine' prop to add to the immersive experience. As the visitors approached, they were not just purchasing desserts, but taking a trip through the history of sweetness.
As the day drew to a close, it was clear that our efforts had paid off. The crowd at our booth was just as large as the neighboring one, with people lining up to experience our unique take on the 'Taste of the World' theme. We received countless compliments on our creativity and the effort we put into making our booth a memorable experience. The fair concluded with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Not only had we matched our competitors in popularity, but we had also learned the power of innovation and teamwork. The bake sale was a sweet success that we would remember for years to come.

A The popularity of A Study in Scarlet. B. Why Doyle wrote A Tangled Skein.
C. The birth of Sherlock Holmes. D. How to name a detective.

D
A. It offered round-the-clock service.
B. It focused on both children and women.
C. It started its service in several cities besides Toronto.
D. It once stopped providing service because of the spread of disease.
33. What does Sistering want to do through Mobile Outreach?
A Broaden their services. B. Look for govemnment support.
C. Provide their services to men. D. Create a medical organization.
34. What does the author do in the last paragraph?
A. Explain how Sistering is run. B. Tell people how to help women.
C. Suggest ways of supporting Sistering. D. Share the reasons for helping women.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The long road to stability B. A light for homeless women

The day of the fair finally arrived, and our table was beautifully decorated with a mouthwatering baked goods.
