We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn’t even lift her eyes from the book. Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched mouth open in surprise, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop. She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “Very dirty floors.”
“Yes, I’m glad they’ve finally decided to clean them,” the nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said, “But aren’t you working late?”
Mum just pushed harder, each swipe (拖一下) of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book.
After a long time Mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, Mum bowed politely to the nurse and said, “Thank you.”
Outside, Mum told me, “Dagmar is fine. No fever.”
“You saw her, Mum?”
“Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. Dad will stop worrying as well. It’s a fine hospital. But such floors! A mop is no good. You need a brush.”

A. to clean the floor B. to please the nurse
C. to see a patient D. to surprise the story-teller
25. When the nurse talked to Mum she thought Mum was a_______.
A. nurse B. visitor C. patient D. cleaner

C. The conditions there aren’t very good.
D. The nurses and doctors there don’t work hard.
27. From the text we know that Dagmar is most likely _______.
A. the story-teller’s sister B. Mum’s friend
C. the story-teller’s classmate D. Dad’s boss

Courage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I constantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The root of “courage” is “cor,” the Latin word for heart. In the beginning, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.
I recently witnessed an example of true courage. During a mountain-climbing trip with my 15-year-old daughter and some college students, I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group. Despite my suggestions to rest, she persisted until she couldn’t breathe properly.
Panicked, I called out to the front for help, but there was no response, and we had no cellphone signal. Fortunately, two students just came back to check out on us. They offered assistance and calmed us down. As we continued at a slower pace, they shared their own experiences, from starting out as beginners like my daughter to becoming consistently among the first to reach the peak.
“You know,” one of them said, looking at my daughter, “I was just like you when I started.
But with practice and proper pace, you’ll get there too.”
“Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That’s how we improve and grow.”
Reaching the mountain top was a huge relief for both my daughter and me. However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasizing the importance of staying together in tough environments. Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle.
I was totally amazed at their bravery and my daughter learned that it’s okay to be the least experienced in a group. Courage, I’ve come to realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage, we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little better.
28. Why does the author mention the original meaning of courage?
A. To question the common belief of courage.
B. To argue for the true nature of courage.
C. To show the changing meaning of courage.
D. To compare different interpretations of courage.
29. What did the two students suggest the daughter do?
A. Keep to a suitable pace. B. Seek help whenever possible.
C. Challenge her own limits. D. Stick with experienced climbers.
30. Which action in the mountain-climbing story is an example of true courage?
A. The mother asked the girl to rest.
B. The girl tried hard not to fall behind.
C. The two students pointed out the group’s fault.
D. The group celebrated the reach of the mountain top.
31. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Kindness connects us all. B. Being a beginner takes courage.
C. We don’t have to be a hero to be brave. D. With courage, everyone can be perfect.
D
Zoos divide opinion: there are those who think it is cruel to keep animals locked up while others believe zoos are essential for the survival of endangered species.
To argue that zoos imprison animals is to misunderstand what zoos are about. Without zoos many of the creatures we love and admire would no longer exist. Every single day, over one hundred animal species vanish. Scientists predict that as early as 2050 one quarter of the Earth’s species will become extinct.
Some animals are in danger because they are hunted. Alarmingly, the population of tigers has already fallen by ninety-five percent. Other species are in danger because of a lack of food. For example, there are fewer than 1300 giant pandas left in the wild.
Zoos have special breeding programmes to help those animals at risk. These breeding programmes are proving extremely successful. As Irene Shapiro from Zoo and Wildlife Support says, “the Puerto Rican Parrot has grown in numbers from just thirteen to about eighty-five and the Golden Lion Tamarin Monkey, which has almost ceased (停止) to exist twenty years ago, has been reintroduced back into the wild.”
Unfortunately, not everyone understands this important role zoos play. For example, Brian Featherstone from the Anti-Zoo Forum says, “I can’t believe we take animals from the wild and put them in cages for the entertainment of the public! We should view them on film or TV in their natural environment.”
However, this misses the point. A zoo does more than display animals to the public. It ensures their survival. Without zoos you would not be able to see many of these animals on TV or anywhere else!
32. What’s the writer’s attitude towards zoos?
A. He shows no opinion either for or against them.
B. He thinks that they are unnecessary and cruel.
C. He believes they play an important environmental role.
D. He expresses a desire that more of them be built.
33. The underlined word “vanish” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______.
A. remain B. disappear C. become rarer D. get killed
34. According to the passage the world’s tiger population _______.
A. will rise by 5% next year B. is relatively stable
C. is 95% smaller than in the past D. has fallen to 95%
35. According to the writer, the most important function of the zoo is to _______.
A. make a lot of money B. entertain visitors
C. ensure animals’ survival D. educate the public

Art Appreciation
Art appreciation is an often overlooked skill. It’s more than simply looking at a piece of art and judging it based on what we see. It requires us to look deeper, beyond the surface into the artist’s intention. ____36____ The following tips would help you achieve it.
The first step is to prepare yourself mentally. Before you begin viewing any artwork, take moments to clear your mind of what a piece you think should look like. ____37____ That’s because an artist can present a unique visual experience by combining line, shape, form, color and space creatively.
Besides, examine the artwork closely. Take note of its elements mentioned above. Consider how these elements work together to convey meaning or emotion in the piece. Notice how the work makes you feel. ____38____ What can I see? What is the artwork saying? What feelings does it arouse in me?
____39____ Information about the artist and when the artwork was created can help you uncover the deeper symbolism present in the work that may not be immediately evident. Art is often used as a tool for social change. To appreciate art, it’s important to understand the context where it was created. The context behind a piece can be found through research and analysis.
Last but not least, sharing opinions on art also helps. Try discussing your thoughts on artwork with friends or family who may have different opinions. Taking the diverse understanding into consideration, you can approach viewing art work from different viewpoints. As a result, you can gain a new appreciation every time you look at it. ____40____
A. Relevant research counts as well.
B. Engage all your senses and ask yourself questions.
C. The process can bring you a fun and educational trip.
D. Leave your feelings aside and check out the questions.
E. To sum up, communication can also do good to your art appreciation.

With Wildlife Conservation Awareness Day approaching, it’s my honor to deliver a speech on wildlife protection.
