【答案】A

The jungles of South America still have many mysteries. Despite current satellite technology, scientists are still discovering ancient sites throughout the continent. Their work continues the mission of many explorers. Perhaps one of the most energetic was Percy Fawcett, who started exploring at the start of the 20th century. In his life, the main goal of the British explorer was to find the Lost City of Z. This is a name he gave to the supposed capital of a lost civilization described by Joao da Silva Guimaraes. He found the place one day in the jungle while searching for gold, yet he didn’t name it. But he said he saw massive stone arches, high towers, and complex ruins. This account later inspired many famous adventure stories, such as Arthur Conan Doyle’s book The Lost World. In the end, Fawcett never found his lost city. For many years, scientists thought that Guimaraes actually met up a site in western Brazil that was discovered later. However, the advanced architecture described by Guimaraes is absent there. This has made the Lost City of Z more of a fantasy. But is it? In the last five years, nearly 100 ancient ruins have been discovered in the Amazon region through new technology. Perhaps the explorers of the past were not so crazy after all.

People who visit Huangsiyang village in Huizhou, Guangdong province, are shocked by the grand scale of its ancient residential buildings. Covering an area of 220,000 square meters, the village was named “Huangsiyang” to express gratitude for the emperor’s kindness. With a history of over 500 years, the village’s architecture dates back to the late Ming Dynasty.
As part of a Guangdong provincial project that targets the high-quality rural (乡村的) development, Huangsiyang has made great efforts to promote its heritage protection and cultural tourism, which have breathed new life into the village. Yang Shouqiang, a village official, explained that the ancient village has more than 20 historical sites, making it the most well-preserved and largest ancient residential group in Huidong county. Yang said the village has attached great importance to education and culture, having produced over 20 examinees who passed the provincial-level exams after being invited to sit for the imperial examinations — the ancient form of the gaokao, China’s college entrance exam.
From 2022 to last year, a total of 65million yuan was invested in the protection and development of Huangsiyang ancient village. Recent surveys have shown significant improvements in the village’s surroundings and internal environment after it took measures to restore architecture and rivers, and improve lighting and other basic facilities. At the same time, the village introduced high-quality homestay (民宿) projects. These homestays preserve the original architectural style of the ancient buildings.
The village has attracted many tourists from the Guangdong — Hong Kong — Macao Greater Bay Area, who take part in team building activities and enjoy unique experiences. Every tree tells a story. They hold our memories, represent belief, and witness countless moments of joy and sorrow. In our imagination, there is always a place for a tree.
For the locals in Naunde, Mozambique, a mango tree provides more than just shade from the Saharan sun. It is also a traditional setting for storytelling, ceremonies, and regulating village life. “It is a place to meet and talk, to seek agreement and settle arguments, to bridge differences and develop unity,” wrote Kofi Annan, the former Secretary-General of the UN. “If you have a problem and can’t find a solution, you meet again tomorrow under the tree and you keep talking.”
The mango tree always stands there, witnessing and remembering everything, and at the same time becomes an inseparable part of the collective memory of the locals. “Each growth layer that trees add every year contains a bit of the air from that year. The trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air through tiny pores (气孔) , which helps build their tissues, so they physically hold the record of the years of their surroundings,” said Benjamin Swett, author of New York City of Trees. In this way, trees also serve as nature’s memory stick, keeping a record of a history as long as themselves.
The English language borrows a lot from trees: We turn over a new leaf and branch out, meaning we move on from the past and start something new. And there are times when we can’t see the wood for the trees. We tend to enjoy the flourishing leaves, branches, and roots of the trees. However, we pay little attention to the forests that embrace trees. The same things often happen to us in our own lives. We often dip ourselves into some bad experiences in life. As a result, we may give up at a terrible moment instead of imagining satisfying success after defeating the failure.
Trees inspire mankind, not just through language, but through ideas. Perhaps the most famous is a tree in a garden in Lincolnshire, England, where an apple fell and inspired young Isaac Newton to wonder: Why would that apple always fall directly to the ground? According to an 18th-century account, Newton was home from Cambridge when he stepped into the garden and into a reverie (沉思) . There, the idea of gravitation came into his mind, inspired by an apple.
28.What is the role of a mango tree in Naunde?
A.A spot to bind the locals together. B.A witness to the changing weather.
C.A generous food supplier on Earth. D.A shelter to protect villagers in disasters.
29.How do trees keep a record of their surroundings?
A.By changing the width of their growth layer.
B.By sticking out branches in different directions.
C.By absorbing carbon dioxide to build their tissues.
D.By reflecting changing climate conditions with their tiny pores.
30.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.Suggestions on facing failure. B.Famous English stories about trees.
C.The relationship between trees and forests. D.Lessons from English expressions related to trees.
31.Why does the author mention Newton in the last paragraph?
A.To explain the necessity of observation. B.To show how gravitation was discovered.
C.To stress the importance of trees in inspiring ideas. D.To introduce how trees serve as a mirror of history.

How does an ecosystem work? What makes the population of different species the way they are? Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator always eats huge numbers of a single prey, the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs maybe unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point, it is remarkably difficult for them to return.
32.What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical models of food webs?
A.The living habits of species in food webs.
B.The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems.
C.The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems.
D.The differences between weak and strong links in food webs.

【答案】32.B 33.C 34.D 35.A
根据第一段中“To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.(为了找到答案,科学家们建立了食物网的数学模型,记录下谁吃谁以及每只吃多少)”以及第二段中“With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs.(通过这些模型,科学家们发现了一些在食物网中运作的关键原理)”可知,借助食物网的数学模型,科学家们发现管理生态系统食物网的规则。故选B。
根据第二段中“When a predator always eats huge numbers of a single prey, the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked.(当掠食者总是吃掉大量的单一猎物时,这两个物种就紧密地联系在一起;当掠食者以不同物种为食时,它们之间的联系很弱)”可知,如果掠食动物只吃一种猎物,那么它们之间的联系就很紧密,故选C。
根据第三段“Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs maybe unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack.(数学模型也揭示了食物网可能是不稳定的,顶级捕食者的微小变化可能导致整个生态系统的巨大影响。在20世纪60年代,科学家们提出,处于食物网顶端的掠食者对其他物种的数量有着惊人的控制能力——包括它们没有直接攻击的物种)”可知,如果食物链中顶级捕食者的数量大幅减少,其他物种的数量将经历意想不到的变化。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据第四段“And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.(而无计划的人类活动证明了顶级掠食者自上而下控制的想法是正确的。在海洋中,我们以工业化规模捕捞顶级掠食者,如鳕鱼,而在陆地上,我们捕杀大型掠食者,如狼。这些行为极大地影响了生态平衡)”可推知,从第四段的例子可以得出结论是:不受控制的人类活动极大地扰乱了生态系统。故选A。

分析句子可知,此处为the first to do“第一个做……的人”,为动词不定式作后置定语。故填to benefit。
故填travelling/traveling。
故填which。
故填but。
故填an。
故填has increased。
故填from。

It was after midnight last December and we were driving home from a party. The weather had been awful, with the rain pouring on our 40-minute journey there. Paul, my husband, was driving our Ford Ranger pick-up truck and my seven-year-old son, Silas, was in the back.
What was so frightening was the speed of water. One minute we were halfway home, the next there was water going up over the bonnet The rushing water lifted our car up and pushed it back against a hedge (树篱). I felt terrified of the power of the water, and Paul was trying to control the truck.
Water was instantly around my ankles. I reached my hand back and felt it around Silas’s too. Paul climbed out through a window, at which point Silas woke up, confused. I managed to pass him through the window to Paul, who was now on the truck’s roof.
Paul told me I needed to get out, but I couldn’t open my door. I attempted to push my body through the driver’s window and was left clinging on to the support between the windows. Paul grabbed my hood (兜帽) to help in vain and I could hear Silas crying, so I told him to let go—Silas needed him. He refused, but I insisted—I wanted to know Silas would be safe. As I saw his empty, outstretched hand, the water took me away. I was a strong swimmer but I had no option but to shoot down rapids. Shocked, I gasped for breath and tried to keep my head above water.
It was extremely dark but I could just make out trees. As I passed, I reached out and grabbed two slim branches, holding tightly. I hugged the tree with my knees. My plan was just to hold on. Not knowing if Paul and Silas were safe, I thought that if they did survive, they would try to save me. I wondered who would come to my rescue.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

After nearly 40 minutes, I saw a small boat spotlight. On seeing the chance of survival, I started to yell and wave my hand for help, straining all my strength. Fortunately, someone noticed my movement and not for a long time, I could figure out that a rescuer was trying to talk to me. However, I couldn’t hear him clearly due to the roar of the water. Eventually, the rescue team managed to steer a boat to my shoulder, and four strong arms lifted me into the boat and transferred me to a safe place. Mixed with raindrops and tears, I felt a sense of relief and safety.
As I rose to my feet, I hugged my rescuers. With tears streaming down my face, I expressed my heart-felt gratitude to the heroes. Meanwhile, I inquired eagerly and anxiously, “I was wondering if you had seen a man with a s even-year-old boy?” The moment I uttered the words I could figure out two familiar figures rushing towards me. We three united once again, hugging tightly, and comforting each other with smiles. After what seemed a long time, the dawn broke. Sunshine and warmth wrapped us and we did grasp the value of life and reunion.

D
33.A strong link is found between two species when a predator ________.
A.has a wide fond choice B.can easily find new prey
C.sticks to one prey species D.can quickly move to another place
34.What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline?
A.The prey species they directly attack will die out.
B.The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators.
C.The living environment of other species will remain unchanged.
D.The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes.
35.What conclusion can be drawn from the examples in Paragraph 4?
A.Uncontrolled human activities greatly upset ecosystems.
B.Rapid economic development threatens animal habitats.
C.Species of commercial value dominate other species.
D.Industrial activities help keep food webs stable.

The increasing number of visitors to the village is also increasing sales of local snacks and agricultural products. Online promotions of these products have also brought in more tourists to nearby villages.

D

67.范文
After nearly 40 minutes, I saw a s mall boat spotlight.
