One afternoon, something on the Internet caught my eye: a tiny hedgehog (刺猬) held by a hand. The post read: “HELP! My hedgehog didn’t take care of her baby, and I cannot raise it because I have to go to school fulltime. Good home with experience needed as soon as possible!”
I had no experience with baby hedgehogs, but I had raised cats, dogs, and birds. It touched me that he was not taken good care of. And maybe I could love him and be the best mom for him.
I wrote the most heartfelt (诚挚的) email I could. That was how I found my Louie. True to my word, he was my baby. It seems that Louie didn’t know he was a hedgehog. He never curled (蜷缩) into a ball, and he liked my two cats, no fear. The cats, however, were afraid of him, as he often moved into the room, running after the cats and blocking my way.
He helped me realize my dream of hedgehog photography, a hobby that began during childhood with cats and dollhouses. I love showing off his photos.
Life has meaning because of the purpose we have. Louie needed a good home and mom, and in return, I got to be a good mother and be needed. Hedgehogs require great amounts of patience, trust, and knowledge—but the payoff (回报) is pretty great.
23. Where did the writer get Louie?
A. From a pet shop. B. From an animal center
C. From a family friend. D. From a hedgehog owner.
24. How did Louie seem to feel at the writer’s home?
A. Scared. B. Relaxed. C. Lonely. D. Bored.
25. What does the writer think of raising Louie?
A. It was easier than expected. B. It gave her a sense of safety.
C. It made her lose her patience. D. It was satisfying and meaningful.

Last night my Chinese friend took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu moved me a lot. The music was beautiful but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing who was born in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing’s father taught him to play many musical instruments, and by age 17 Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing’s life grew worse. He was very poor. He developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.
Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue has become one of China’s national treasures. Its sad beauty not only paints a picture of Abing’s own life but also makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own sad or painful experiences.
26. What does the writer think of Erquan Yingyue?
A. Exciting and beautiful. B. Sad but beautiful.
C. Quiet and wonderful. D. Cheerful but noisy.
27. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?

B Abing’s musical skills made him popular.

D. It tells the history of Abing’s Erquan Yingyue.
28. What can we learn about Abing?
A. He developed a serious illness and became deaf.
B. He taught himself to play many musical instruments.
C. Over 600 pieces of his music were recorded for the future world.
D. His Erquan Yingyue has become one of China’s national treasures.

After learning about the life of the master poet who lived about 1,300 years ago in the historical documentary Li Bai, many young Chinese viewers have preferred talking about pursuing (追求) their dreams on social media.
In the documentary Du Fu—China’s Greatest Poet, a historian said, “Du’s poems are as important in Chinese literary history as Shakespeare’s is to people in Britain.” This remark can also be used for Li’s poems. Much of Li’s life is reflected in his poems; his romance, heroism, and freedom while travelling around the mountains and rivers of China, and his hard life experiences. Every winter, Siberian cranes migrate (迁徙) from northeast Siberia in Russia to Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, China. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season there. However, climate change has endangered the birds’ homes.
“In some years, Poyang Lake experiences floods, while in others it experiences droughts (干旱). Both of these create food shortages in the cranes’ living space,” a researcher from the National Bird Banding Centre of China told the journalist.
To help deal with the problem, the local government has built 70 hectares (公顷) of lotus roots (莲藕) in Nanchang to provide food during the winter for the cranes. The birds’ population has risen from about 3,000 to more than 5,000 over the past 20 years, according to the researcher.
Over the years, China has worked hard to protect migratory birds (候鸟) and wetlands. Wetlands play a key role in cleaning water, preventing floods, and helping with biodiversity (生物多样性). The law on wetland protection was introduced on June 1, 2022. It stops building work on important national wetlands and bans (禁止) activities such as overgrazing (过度放牧) and giving out wastewater.
Thanks to these efforts, China has reported more birds wintering in the nation’s wetlands. In February, 2023, black-faced spoonbills, a kind of endangered birds, were seen wintering at Dongting Lake after disappearing for five years. Last December, Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve recorded more than 2,900 tundra swans up from some 1,000 seen during the winter of 2021.

34. What do wetlands play the main role of?
A. Saving endangered animals. B. Providing homes for migratory birds.
C. Looking after water and biodiversity. D. Avoiding overgrazing and water pollution.

C. China has completed its wetland protection.

36. What is the structure of the passage?

People’s life is greatly improved. You can see tall buildings, big department stores and factories everywhere. Different kinds of cars and buses are running in the wide streets.

C From a family friend. D. From a hedgehog owner.

Last night my Chinese friend took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu moved me a lot. The music was beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain.
28. What can we learn about Abing?

In February, 2023, black-faced spoonbills, a kind of endangered birds, were seen wintering at Dongting Lake after disappearing for five years.
