Natural Life E- Books by Education Expert Wendy Priesnitz
Beyond School: Living As If School Doesn’t Exist
This is a long- awaited fourth book about life learning. It’s a collection of 17 essays about how families and individuals can live and learn without struggles, and with trust, respect, and dignity. Together, they create ways to help children learn about today’s world while becoming equipped to live in tomorrow’s.
Green & Healthy Homes
The book will help you and your family make your home greener and healthier, and save money too. It includes tips on making your own cleaning supplies and advice on how to conserve water, avoid dangerous household chemicals and use organic materials for your home.
Life Learning: Lessons From the Educational Frontier
This is a unique collection of 30 essays about the story of learning written by parents and young people who have experienced it first-hand. It includes learning to read and do math without being taught, learning what’s wrong with education at present, learning in the real world, and much more.
Challenging Assumptions in Education: From Institutionalized Education to a Learning Society
This book explains why life learners help their children live and learn, and provides inspiration and support for families who have chosen that exciting path. It also challenges open- minded readers — including teachers, parents, and lawmakers — to transform the public education system, using what homeschoolers know about how children learn.

Tech businessman Jared Isaacman, who made a fortune in tech and fighter jets, bought an entire flight and took three “everyday” people with him to space. He aimed to use the private trip to raise $200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, half coming from his own pocket.
His crew included a St. Jude worker with direct ties to the activity, representing the activity’s pillar (核心) of Hope, a professor, and another person, representing the pillar of Generosity, chosen as part of a $200 million St. Jude fundraising program. All were invited to join in donating to reach the ambitious overall campaign goal in support of St. Jude’s current multi-billion dollar expansion to speed up research advances and save more children worldwide. Anyone donating to St. Jude would be entered into a random drawing for the “Generosity” seat.
Isaacman has been “really interested in space” since he was in kindergarten. He dropped out of high school when he was 16, got a GED certificate and started a business in his parents’ basement that became the beginning of Shift4 Payments, a credit card processing company. He set a speed record flying around the world in 2009 while raising money for the Make-A-Wish program, and later established Draken International, the world’s largest private fleet (舰队) of fighter jets.
Now he has realized his childhood dream-boarding a spaceship, launched in Florida and orbiting the Earth for three days in the history-making event. He called it an “epic (史诗般的) adventure”. “I truly want us to live in a world 50 or 100 years from now where people are jumping their rockets,” Isaacman said. “And if we’re going to live in that world, we’d better deal with childhood cancer successfully along the way.”
4. Why did Isaacman raise funds for St. Jude?
A. To expand a fundraising programme. B. To perform an act of great generosity.
C. To make his childhood dream come true. D. To encourage St. Jude’s life-saving work.
5. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A. The commercial skills of Isaacman. B. The growth experience of Isaacman.
C The reason for Isaacman’s good deeds. D. The beginning of Isaacman’s business.
6. What can be learned about the “epic adventure”?
A. It was a multi-day journey. B. It will be common in the future.
C. It involved three civilians in total. D. It is a symbol of hope for a better life.
7. What message is conveyed in Isaacman’s story?
A. No sweet without sweat. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. D. A penny saved is a penny earned.
C
“Is the glass half empty or half full?” This old English saying has long been used to tell a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today, the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success.
However, is this necessarily a good thing? Recent studies indicate that it all depends. There is such a thing as too much positivity. It happens when someone remains in a happy and positive state and ignores any bad and negative emotions across all situations. But as a matter of fact, it is normal for us to experience any emotions. The death of a pet or loved one, a low score on a test, or a mountain of new homework should lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration and anger. If we hide these emotions just because we want to look optimistic in front of our friends and family, they can build up inside of us and end up erupting in unexpected ways. There is new evidence to suggest that many of these overly positive people are at a risk of developing drug or alcohol addictions as well as other psychological (心理的) problems.
Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you. Imagine having had a bad day, and wanting to talk about it with your friend. However, instead of listening to your problems and sympathizing with you, they simply told you to “be positive” and give you the impression that your problems are being completely ignored. Just take everything as it comes and express how you really feel. This makes you human, and your true friends will always stick by you.
So my simple advice to you is to do what gives you the best “attitude” in life, whatever for you that might be. Regardless of whether a glass is half-empty or half-full, it nonetheless still has space to fill.
8. Why does the writer mention the glass at the beginning of the text?
A. To give some evidence.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To present an argument.
D. To explain his ideas.
9. What is the writer’s attitude to the person who remains positive across all situations?
A. Negative. B. Supportive.
C. Indifferent. D. Unclear.
10. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A The cause of overly positivity.
B. The prevention of overly positivity.
C. The bad effect of overly positivity on others.
D. The bad impacts of overly positivity on personal emotion.
11. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. Positivity is the key to success.
B. We needn’t stay positive all the time.
C. There isn’t such a thing as overly positive.
D. Positivity always does a harm effect to our lives.
D
From Black Beauty to The Chronicles of Narnia, many films and stories have shown the close bond that can develop between a human and a horse. However, no one knows how much horses actually understand about their buman companions. Recently, researchers have been trying to determine whether horses understand human emotions, and they have found that horses can tell when someone feels happy or sad.
To conduct the experiment, the researchers tried a technique that is often used to study how much babies understand about the world around them. It involves setting up a situation that does not make sense. The researchers brought 28 horses into a room, one by one. They showed each horse a picture of a happy human and a sad human. At the same time, they played a recording of a happy or sad voice. When the picture and voice didn’t match — for example, if the voice was sad but the picture showed a happy person — the horse seemed puzzled and looked for a longer time, as if it knew something didn’t make sense. “You could imagine that they have a particular box in their mind labeled ‘human sadness’ containing the characteristics of both a human sad face and a human sad voice — and that when we are sad, they expect what we say to match how we look,” said researcher Océane Liehrmann of the University of Turku, in Finland.
The researchers also believe that horses prefer to be around happy people. The animals spent more time looking at the happy person’s picture and seemed more excited when they heard a joyful voice.
It is possible that the horses might have associated happy human expressions with positive memories from their past. Another theory is that seeing a happy person could actually make a horse feel happier — a process known as emotional infection. “We don’t know whether horses themselves understand what it is to be sad,” said Liehrmann. However, “it is possible that they learn that it means something for a human,” she said.
12. Why are the two films mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To show their popularity.
C. To attract people to watch films.
D. To ask people to care about horses.
13. How did the researchers study the horses?
A. By talking to them.
B. By recording their voices.
C. By comparing their pictures.
D. By observing their reactions.
14. How may a horse feel when hearing a sad voice from a happy face?
A. Sad. B. Happy. C. Confused. D. Excited.
15. What is the passage mainly talking about?
A. Horses may feel very happy or sad.
B. Horses may have positive memories.
C. Horses can get along well with people.
D. Horses can understand people’s feelings.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was 16, my parents and I moved to a small town of Arizona. Since my parents were very busy at that time, my Aunt Julia often took care of me during their absence.
One rainy day, when Julia and I were heading toward home, I caught sight of an old lady wearing an orange jacket with a huge bag and a walking stick. Out of curiosity, I asked Julia, “Who is she? What is she doing with that huge bag?”
Julia caught a glimpse at her, then told me, “She is called Melinda. She has been collecting garbage with that huge garbage bag in the town for several years. Nobody knows why she’s been doing it. Maybe just for fun.” Hearing her words, I couldn’t help exclaiming, “Wow! It’s so strange! Why does she find it funny to collect garbage?”
Since that day, I had come across her for many times on my way home. She always carried the huge garbage bag whether it was rainy or sunny. Gradually, I didn’t find her strange for collecting garbage. Instead, I began to greet her with a smile.
Two years later, I was admitted to Chicago University. To my disappointment, I often saw trash on the lawn on campus. “Why should people litter everywhere? Who is responsible for the trash?” A few days later, it occurred to me that, since nobody took responsibility for it, why not collect trash myself? That way, I could walk past the lawn without feeling guilty.
Then, I took action. I always took a trash bag and collect trash on the lawn every time I walked past it. A few students also followed suit soon afterwards, keeping the school cleaner and prettier than before.
One day, an idea popped into my head when I finished collecting trash — maybe we could help make the city cleaner and prettier too! Despite the thought that collecting trash in front of so many people outside school was awkward, I knew it was the right thing to do. So I decided to give it a go.

【答案】 One day, I was collecting garbage outside the school. Some people gave me a strange look, as if l were mad. All of a sudden, I thought of the old woman who used to collect garbage many years ago. It occurred to me that I was acting just like her. As strange as that may seem, collecting garbage was meaningful for me. Little by little, a lot of people, came to realize that I was doing voluntary service to keep the town clean, and I was complimented and thanked.
Then I realized that I should encourage more students to take part. Surprisingly, they agreed and we founded a voluntary group. We gave each student a bright orange jacket with the message “Let’s Keep Our Town Cleaner!” We spent the time not just collecting trash, but also sorting it out and recycling it. The most wonderful thing was that all the people who were close to us were also doing their part! I said to myself, “This is what the old woman did for me. She has changed my life greatly.“”
