When people want to know about the weather, they usually go to their smartphones, TVs, newspapers, or the Internet. However, you can also find many weather signs among wildlife, because of their highly developed senses.
Drops in air pressure make an effect on small animals in many ways. People who spend a lot of time outdoors have found that, before a storm, field mice come out of their holes and run around. Deer leave high ground and come down from the mountains.
Birds also have a good sense of weather. For example, some birds will chirp (叽叽喳喳), sing and even fight over a piece of bread before a storm. In addition, they might search for safe places. You will sometimes see birds standing in trees or staying together on a wire close to a building. Before the storm, low pressure makes the air so thin that birds have difficulty flying.
It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in summer, rather than during the periods in spring or autumn. Watch for other weather signs if you see that. If they fly in the wrong direction, they may be flying ahead of a storm.
By paying attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind of weather.

Confidence is a belief in oneself, the belief that one has the ability to meet life’s challenges and to succeed—and the willingness to act accordingly. Being confident requires a realistic sense of one’s abilities and feeling safe in the knowledge.
Science shows why we trust people who are confident. Imagine this: one person tells a lie confidently, while another says something true in a hesitant voice. Which person would you trust?
According to British scientist Dean Burnett, humans are far more likely to believe information expressed confidently by a confident person or in some other ways using confident language.
“It is known that humans trust confident people over those who are more uncertain,” wrote Burnett for Science Focus magazine. “When two people are trying to make a decision but each person says different things, confidently expressed arguments are seen as passing on better information, which decides the decision.”
Why is this the case? As Burnett said, humans are social animals. In our ancient past, most of our information about the world came from our tribe (部落), in other words, the people around us. So, if ancient humans heard someone confidently saying “There’s a tiger coming”, believing what that person said could save our lives.
On a more personal level, we use our own experiences to understand what other people do and say. That’s how our brain works. When we are confident, it’s for good reason. Therefore, we believe that when someone else is being confident, they must have good reason, too. However, we need to realize that confidently expressed information may be more persuasive (有说服力的), but that doesn’t mean it’s correct. As Burnett wrote, we are living in a more and more different world. Trusting very confident people without checking the facts can lead to “unexpected results”.
16.Where does confidence come from according to the writer?

18.What does the underlined word “hesitant” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Confident. B.Safe. C.Uncertain. D.Loud.
19.Which of the following will the writer probably agree with?
A.Not all confidently expressed information is correct.
B.We should trust every confident people without checking the facts.
C.Our experiences won’t influence how we understand what other people do and say.

46.例文
Enjoy Labor, Enjoy Life
It is well known that labor is the traditional Chinese virtue of love. However, some students are rarely given the opportunity to enjoy labor, while others are too busy with their studies to labor. There are also some students who are unwilling to labor because they are lazy.
As a middle school student, I often do some labor activities in everyday life. For example, I clean the classroom and playground with my classmates at school. I do some cooking, cook dishes, wash clothes and tidy rooms at home. And in the community, I do volunteer work to help the old or disabled.
By doing these, I’ve learnt some basic life skills to take care of myself. Besides, I have not only got the strong feeling of satisfaction but also become more and more independent and responsible.
All in all, I believe that labor education is important for our development and I encourage all the teenagers to actively engage in labor activities. Let’s take an active part in doing the daily labor.
