On Dec.26, Gelinne was having a cup of coffee at home, gazing out at frozen Beards River. Suddenly, his daughter cried “Look!” Gelinne looked up just in time to see a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, coming down.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former sailor, realized it would land in the river. Without hesitation, he ran down to the waterfront. The plane had slid to a stop on the broad, frozen river, far from shore, sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing. Gelinne knew from his previous training that even a few minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot.
Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it. So he and his son, John, pulled two kayaks (皮划艇) out. “If it can float on the water, it can slide on the ice,” Gelinne said.
The kayaks’ paddles (桨) proved too weak, so the pair tried using sticks to push the boats along. Their first attempts left them spinning in circles. But with effort, they made progress. When Gelinne reached the plane, the pilot was standing on a tail wing, surrounded by open water. Gelinne pushed his kayak off the ice and into the water, paddling toward the pilot and thinking, “What if he panics? What if I fall over?”
With his son nearby, Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking, “Just hang on to the kayak as if you were hugging your wife.” The pilot grabbed the kayak’s bow. Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot onto the shelf of unbroken ice. But each time Gelinne tried, the kayak broke through the ice. He needed help.
Soon a police officer arrived and radioed for help. A boat from the local Department of Natural Resources appeared. It picked up the pilot, Steve 71, and rushed him to safety, who would be treated for minor injuries. Later the boat returned to help Gelinne, exhausted, to shore.
The boat had arrived just in time, Gelinne recalled. “I’m 60 years old,” he says. “There was no way I could get him to shore.” Still, he was satisfied.
4. What was Gelinne’s first reaction to the air crash?
A. Hesitant. B. Concerned. C. Scared. D. Surprised.
5 What can be learned from paragraph 4?
A. The plane had sunk to the bottom.
B. The pilot was nearly frozen to death.
C. The kayaks got stuck in floating ice.
D. The rescue was tougher than expected.
6. Why did Gelinne need help?
A. Because his son didn’t help him.
B. Because the kayaks were broken.
C. Because the ice wasn’t solid enough.
D. Because the pilot was too exhausted.

Scientists have created the first full-sized digital model of the Titanic. The model will allow scientists to study the Titanic in ways that have never been possible before.
The Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. It was the largest ship of its time, and was thought to be unable to go down below the surface of water. But four days after it left Southampton, England, the Titanic hit an iceberg (冰山) and sank early the next day, killing some 1,500 people. The sinking is one of the most famous disasters in history.
The Titanic broke into two pieces, and sank to the sea floor, about 3.8 kilometers below the surface of the ocean. The location of the wreck (沉船) wasn’t discovered until 1985. Since then, many research teams have visited the site with undersea robots, whose trips have resulted in lots of pictures and videos of the wreck. But even these only allow scientists to study one area of the wreck at a time.
Now, two companies — an undersea technology company called Magellan and the movie company Atlantic Productions — have created a 3-D model of the Titanic by sending two undersea robots down to the Titanic. The robots recorded both of the main pieces of the Titanic (the front and the back), as well as other hits of the wreck on the sea floor. Over six weeks, they took high-quality videos and over 715,000 pictures, based on which scientists created the 3-D model of the Titanic. Using it, users will be able to see the ship from all angles.
The companies say the 3-D model will help scientists, enabling them to study the Titanic in great detail and study how the Titanic broke down, which could help them learn more about thousands of other shipwrecks also lying on the sea floor. And of course, scientists hope the model will help them better understand what happened when the Titanic sank.
8. What does the author say about the Titanic?
A. It was supposedly unsinkable. B. Its sinking is the best-known disaster.
C. Its voyage should last for 4 days. D. It tops the list of England's ships in size.
9. What message is conveyed in the third paragraph?
A. More studies are encouraged on the Titanic. B. Enthusiasm for the Titanic never fades away.
C. The exploration of the Titanic is far from easy. D. New discoveries have been made about the Titanic.
10. Which of the following plays a key role in creating the 3-D model?
A. The previous findings about the shipwreck. B. The devotion of the scientists.
C. The cooperation between the two companies. D. The complete picture of the wreck.
11. The 3-D model is expected to ___________.
A. help rebuild other shipwrecks underwater B. give scientists new insights into the Titanic
C. allow the public to fully admire the Titanic D. reproduce the grandness of the large ship
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B

Aspects of your personality can be revealed in a heartbeat, literally, a new study from Germany suggests. The study identified heartbeat “signatures”— wave patterns in the heart's electrical activity —that were linked with personality traits.
People with certain heartbeat signatures scored higher on tests of neuroticism (神经过敏) — meaning these individuals tend to experience more negative emotions, such as anxiety and a depressed mood, and fewer positive emotions, including happiness and cheerfulness.
The study involved 425 university students ages 18 to 33. The students completed personality tests, and had their heart electrical activity measured using electrocardiography (心电图). “With this method, we have found something that is perhaps more accurate, and more relatable, than many other measures of personality,” said study researcher Stefan Koelsch, a professor of biological psychology at the Freie University Berlin.
The results suggest such heartbeat signatures may provide a more objective way to measure personality than current methods, the researchers say. Personality is commonly assessed using questionnaires, but these may suffer from bias — people may choose responses that they think are more acceptable for their gender, or they may misunderstand their own traits.
Researchers may also be able to identify heartbeat signatures that are characteristic of certain emotional disorders, such as depression, or of cardiovascular diseases, Koelsch said. Such signatures could one day help diagnose these disorders, or identify people at risk for them, he said.
Previously, Koelsch and colleagues found a link between certain heart electrical activity patterns and people with “cold” personalities, who tend not to show emotion. In the new study, similar patterns were seen among those with high scores in neuroticism and low scores in positive emotion, like compassion and empathy.
Although Koelsch suspects that this type of electrical pattern is not particularly healthy, future research is needed to confirm this. Eventually, Koelsch hopes to be able to see whether certain interventions, such as listening to music or watching films, change emotional states and the heart's electrical activity, he said.
12. What does “signatures” refer to in Paragraph 1?
A. The scores of neuroticism tests. B. People’s personality traits.
C. The researchers’ written names. D. The wave patterns of your heart.
13. What do researchers think about the common assessment of personality?
A. It is more objective and much healthier.
B. It is likely to be prejudiced and misunderstood.
C. It is based on heart electrical activity measures.
D. It is more accurate and more relatable to people.
14. According to the study, what can be learned about “cold” people?
A. They tend to score lower in neuroticism tests.
B. They tend to suffer from cardiovascular disease.
C. They tend to be less compassionate and empathetic.
D. They tend to gain higher degrees in positive emotions.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A Heartbeats hint your personality traits.
B. Heartbeat signatures heal depression.
C. Heartbeats change your emotional states.
D. Heartbeats indicates the electrical activity.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

I have coached people from all walks of life for 25 years and I have seen first-hand that self-belief is what sets people up to be happy and achieve their dreams. ___16___
1) Build your identity
When I sat down to write my first book, Be Your Own Life Coach, I was filled with self-doubt; I couldn’t write a word and considered backing out. I remembered the words of my dad, who had been a hugely successful door-to-door salesman, “Never try and sell anything that you’re not sold on. Do the same every time your confidence needs an upgrade. Take a pen and paper and write out the sentence: “Reasons Why I Am Uniquely Qualified to Do X.” ___18___ Soon, you will have sold yourself to you!
2) Build your team
Choose your companions carefully. You need people who “get you”, and see your true potential. When the going gets tough, you may need to lean on their belief in you and borrow it until your own has recovered and bounced back! ___19___
3) Stop the criticism
You can be a great friend or a great enemy for yourself. There is no one who can do more damage to your self-belief than — you! Listen carefully to how you speak to yourself. ___20___ Let go of what you may be blaming yourself for, either in your professional life or personal.
A. So how do you build self-belief and overcome self-doubt?
B. Are you looking down on yourself or building yourself up?
C. Within 30 minutes, I was “sold”, and the words flowed!
D. They will be feeding your self-belief or making you short of it.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was in New York City on a school trip. I called home from a pay phone, and my little sister, Alex, said four envelopes had arrived: Georgetown, Cornell, William and Mary and the University of Massachusetts. She then opened and read them to me in her ten-year-old voice: “We regret that we do not have a place for you...” Rejected from Georgetown. “You were one of many qualified candidates...” Rejected from Cornell. And number seventy-three on a waiting list of seventy-five at William and Mary. Accepted to U Mass, my safety school.
I didn’t digest the rejections immediately. I toured the United Nations, took train home and went back to school. Then I realized that other people had gotten into schools they really wanted to go to. Up to that point in my seventeen years, I hadn’t really failed at anything. I got good grades, made the school team and scored well on my SATs. I hadn’t experienced any major disappointments in my life, no deaths, no disease, no divorce, no cavities (龋齿) even. So being rejected seemed disastrous.
I had always assumed I’d go to one of the“good schools.”I really wanted to be chosen: This is the place for smart people, and we want you. U Mass, on the other hand, had the reputation of being a party school to which, come September, I’d be headed with the guy who sat next to me in tenth-grade history and who, during tests, left his book open on the floor and turned the pages with his feet.
I did not get active like my friend Heather, who, having been rejected by her first choice, made I Love Lucy-style plans to drive to the Duke campus with her soccer ball and her science-fair project to show the admissions board(招生委员会) exactly what they were rejecting. I simply said things like, “I’ve decided to give up the undergraduate degree and take a cake-decorating course.” The subtext in this was: I’m stupid. The world isn’t fair.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I remained bitter until one day, my father sat me down.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Deeply touched by his words, I began to reassess my situation.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I remained bitter until one day, my father sat me down. Having noticed my sadness, he asked what was troubling me. I opened my heart to him, pouring out my frustrations about the rejections and my fears for the future. “I always thought I’d get into one of the good schools, Dad. Now I feel like a failure, like I’m not good enough.” After listening attentively for a while, my father gently reminded me of all my accomplishments — the countless projects I had excelled in, the teams I had led, and the awards I had earned. He concluded with a reassuring smile. “I understand how painful these rejections feel, but they are not a reflection of your worth. I know you have the strength to overcome this challenge, and I will he here to support you every step of the way.”
Deeply touched by his words. I began to assess my situation. My father helped me realize that dwelling on the rejections would only hinder me from reaching my full potential.True success is not defined by prestige, but by how we respond to life’s challenges. Changing my mindset from self-pity to determination, I decided to embrace the opportunities at the University of Massachusetts, knowing my journey would be shaped by my willingness to grow. With a renewed sense of purpose, I dived into my studies, joined campus organizations, and discovered new passions that enriched my life in ways I had never imagined. The initial disappointment soon gave way to anticipation and excitement. Looking back now, I am forever grateful to my father for his unwavering support and wisdom, which have been invaluable in shaping the person I am today.

D
B They tend to suffer from cardiovascular disease.
C. They tend to be less compassionate and empathetic.
D. They tend to gain higher degrees in positive emotions.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Heartbeats hint your personality traits.
B. Heartbeat signatures heal depression.
C. Heartbeats change your emotional states.
D. Heartbeats indicates the electrical activity.

第二节 (满分25分)
