It may sound hard to believe that animals can predict earthquakes, but many events seem to support this idea.
On 4th February 1975, Chinese officials ordered people in Haicheng, Liaoning Province to leave their homes and stay outdoors. They believed a disaster (灾难) was coming, partly because of animals’ strange behaviour. For example, people reported seeing groups of toads (蟾蜍) appear in the streets and hibernant (冬眠的) snakes coming out of the ground. Just hours later, a large 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the city.
Another example happened in December 2004 in a national park in Sri Lanka. The animals seemed to sense that something was wrong that day. The birds flew away for no reason, and the elephants ran to higher ground. A few minutes later, there was a huge earthquake deep under the sea.
However, scientists say that while these are interesting examples of animals behaving strangely before earthquakes, it doesn’t necessarily mean that animals have the ability to predict natural disasters. It could just be a reaction. All animals have the instinct (本能) to avoid dangers.
So how do they do it? Well animals have highly developed senses that allow them to pick up on environmental changes that we might not even notice. Some have extremely strong hearing or smell, while others can detect changes in atmospheric pressure (大气压). For example, fish can sense changes in water pressure, so they may jump out of the water or swim in unusual ways before an earthquake.
Although scientists may not agree on animals’ special ability, it doesn’t hurt to pay a little more attention to the animals around you.
4. Why did animals in the national park in Sri Lanka behave strangely?
A. Because they were scared by the earthquake.
B. Because they sensed that danger was coming.
C. Because they were fighting among themselves.
5. What does the underlined word “detect” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Reflect. B. Prevent. C. Notice.
6. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How scientists predict earthquakes.
B. What animals do before an earthquake.
C. How animals sense environmental changes.
7. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A. We can use animal behavior as a reminder.
B. We need to study the special abilities of animals.
C. We should pay no attention to animals’ strange behaviour.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. C 7. A
【解析】
【导语】本文通过多个例子探讨了动物在地震前表现出奇怪行为的现象,并讨论了科学家对此现象的解释,强调了关注动物行为的重要性。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据“The animals seemed to sense that something was wrong that day”可知,斯里兰卡国家公园的动物们表现出奇怪的行为是因为它们感觉到了危险即将来临。故选B。
【5题详解】
词义猜测题。根据“animals have highly developed senses that allow them to pick up on environmental changes that we might not even notice. Some have extremely strong hearing or smell, while others can detect changes in atmospheric pressure
根据“it doesn’t hurt to pay a little more attention to the animals around you”可知,作者认为我们可以将动物的行为作为一种提醒。故选A。
C
Written by E.B. White and first published in 1952 Charlotte’s Web is a classic story set largely in a farm. It is a story of friendship and a celebration of farm life, which is full of warmth and wisdom.
The story takes place on a farm. Eight-year-old Fern Arable is sad when she hears that her father is going to kill the smallest one of his pig’s new litter (一窝). Saying that the pig has a right to life and promising to look after it in their family’s yard, she saves the animal and names him Wilbur. However, fearing his daughter is spending too much time with an animal, Mr. Arable sends Wilbur to the nearby farm of Fem’s uncle, Mr. Zuckerman.
At first, Wilbur is lonely and misses Fern. However, he gets used to his new home when he makes friends with a spider named Charlotte and other animals. When Wilbur learns that he is going to be killed and served at Christmas dinner, Charlotte comes up with a plan to save him.
Charlotte spins (结网) words of praise like “Some pig” for Wilbur on her web. This catches the attention of the Zuckermans and their neighbours. They all think Wilbur is special and the thought of killing him becomes unthinkable.
When Wilbur is taken to the country fair, Charlotte goes to continue her work—She spins new messages. The results draw huge crowds and Charlotte’s plan to save Wilbur’s life pays off.
At the close of the fair, however, Charlotte says goodbye to Wilbur. She is dying. But she entrusts (委托;托付) her friend with her eggs. Heartbroken, Wilbur takes the eggs back to the farm and sees that they hatch (孵化). Three of Charlotte’s “kids” stay with Wilbur and live happily with him on the farm.
While humorous, the novel also contains important lessons. For example, Fern’s caring for Wilbur teaches her responsibility. And she realizes that if she stands up for what she believes in, she can make a difference in the world.
8. Why does Mr. Arable send Wilbur to a new farm?

Do you know that tennis is one of the most wasteful sports on the planet? Tennis balls are difficult to recycle, and millions of balls end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场). Once there, it can take as long as 400 years for the balls to decompose (分解).
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) serves as the governing body of professional tennis games. Last year, the ITF brought together ball makers, tennis officials, and recycling companies to solve the tennis ball waste problem. They are trying to find answers to the following questions. Can a recyclable ball be developed? Can the ITF change rules so balls can be used longer in professional tennis games? … Nowadays, professional players need a new set of balls after every nine games. This practice results in great waste.
Jamie Capel-Davies, the head of science and tech at the ITF, says that there are four levels in the effort to reduce (减少) waste. “Firstly, we try to reduce the number of balls being used. Secondly, we should use balls as many times as possible. Recycling is our third choice,” he explains. “The last level is to place the balls in landfills.”
However, it is not easy to make changes. Luckily, many recyclers have already taken steps to reuse tennis balls. One company collects used tennis balls and turns them into pet toys. while another company reuses tennis balls for a kind of flooring material.

Well, animals have highly developed senses that allow them to pick up on environmental changes that we might not even notice.
C
Written by E.B. White and first published in 1952, Charlotte’s Web is a classic story set largely in a farm.
8 Why does Mr. Arable send Wilbur to a new farm?
A. He thinks the small pig is too weak to live.
B. He is so busy that he doesn’t have time to take care of Wilbur.
