We always use body language in our daily life. When we have a conversation with someone, we may use more body language than words. However, the same body language may mean different things in different countries. That’s why people sometimes do not understand each other correctly. Pointing to one part of the body can mean differently in different cultures. For example, in the USA, people point to their heads when they think someone is clever. However, in Europe it means “He or she is stupid or something is wrong with his or her head.” In our Chinese culture, nodding our head up and down means “yes” and shaking our head from side to side means “no”. However, in parts of India, Greece and Turkey, it means just the opposite. In England and the USA, when you raise your hand and make a circle with the thumb and the second finger, it means “You’re all right.” or “Everything is OK.” However, if we do this in France or Belgium, it means “You’re worth zero.” In Greece or Turkey, we should not make this gesture (手势), or we are thought to be very rude. The meaning of gestures can also change over time. In the 1960s, the V sign meant “peace”. However, during World War II, it meant “victory”. In Greece, it is a very insulting (侮辱性的) sign. Though the meaning of body language is different, there are some expressions having the same meaning throughout the world, such as smiling and crying. 1.In England, if people point to their heads, it means they think someone is ________. A.clever B.stupid C.headache D.angry 2.In India, if one nods his head up and down, it means he ________. A.doesn’t agree B.agrees C.is happy D.is sad 3.In France, if you raise your hand and make a circle with the thumb and the second finger, it means ________. A.you are clever B.everything is OK C.it is true D.you are worth zero 4.What did the V sign mean in the 1960s? A.Victory. B.Killing. C.Festival. D.Peace. 5.Which one is TRUE according to the passage? A.People in the world never use body language. B.Shaking our heads from side to side means “yes” in China. C.It’s impolite to make the V sign in Greece. D.The meaning of gestures never change. 【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.D 5.C 【导语】本文主要介绍肢体语言在日常生活中的表达。 1.细节理解题。根据“ For example, in the USA, people point to their heads when they think someone is clever. However, in Europe it means ‘He or she is stupid or something is wrong with his or her head.’”可知,在英国,如果人们指着自己的头,就意味着他们认为某人很笨,或者脑袋有问题,故选B。 2.细节理解题。根据“In our Chinese culture, nodding our head up and down means ‘yes’ and shaking our head from side to side means ‘no’. However, in parts of India, Greece and Turkey, it means just the opposite.”可知,在印度,点头表示“no”,即不同意,故选A。 3.细节理解题。根据“However, if we do this in France or Belgium, it means ‘You’re worth zero.’”可知,我们在法国或比利时这么做,意思是“你一文不值”。故选D。 4.细节理解题。根据“In the 1960s, the V sign meant ‘peace’.”可知,在20世纪60年代,V的意思是“和平”。故选D。 5.细节理解题。根据“In the 1960s, the V sign ... In Greece, it is a very insulting (侮辱性的) sign.”可知,在希腊V形手势是具有侮辱性的,也就是不礼貌的。故选C。 If you can speak English, you know a lot of English words. You can read, speak and understand. But there is another kind of language you need to know—the language of the body. All over the world, people “talk” with their hands, with their heads and with their eyes. When Japanese people meet, they bow (鞠躬). When Indians meet, they put their hands together. What do American and British people do? Americans are more informal (不拘礼节的) than the British. They like to be friendly. They use first names, they ask questions and they talk easily about themselves. When they sit down, they like to relax in their chairs and make themselves comfortable. British people are more reserved (矜持的). They take more time to make friends. They like to know you before they ask you something of your home. When British and American people meet someone for the first time, they shake hands. They do not usually shake hands with people they know well. Women sometimes kiss their women friends, and men kiss women friends. When a man meets a man friend, he just smiles, and says “Hello”. Men do not kiss each other, or hold hands. Even fathers and sons do not often kiss each other. 1.We can learn from the passage that _______. A.handshake and kiss can not be used in greeting B.people can “talk” with their hands, heads and eyes C.only a few people use body language D.body language is more often used by people than words 2.British people take more time to make friends because _______. A.they are quite conservative (保守的) B.they don’t like people to go to their homes C.they are not as friendly as the Americans D.they find it more interesting to stay alone 3.When Indians meet, they _______. A.kiss each other B.bow to each other C.put their hands together D.just smile 4.In the USA and Britain, _______. A.men always kiss their women friends when they meet B.women are more likely to kiss each other while men aren’t C.people would like to shake hands whenever they meet their friends D.fathers and sons often kiss each other 【答案】1.B 2.A 3.C 4.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了不同国家的肢体语言。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段“All over the world, people ‘talk’ with their hands, with their heads and with their eyes.”可知,在世界各地,人们用手、用头、用眼睛“说话”。故选B。 2.细节理解题。根据第三段“British people are more reserved (矜持的). It’s a way to be polite. But did you know that apes (大猩猩) also do this? According to a new study, we have found this kind of behavior (行为) in animals for the first time. Many animals greet each other, but they don't say “goodbye” like apes do. Scientists studied over 1,200 apes. Of course, they don’t say“What’s up?”like we do. They use body language. For example, they will touch each other or hold hands. They might also butt (顶) heads or just look at each other. They do these things both before and after they spend time together. These greetings will be shorter if the apes already know each other. Humans do this too. Scientists say that the common ancestors (共同祖先) of apes and humans might have done this as well. Then they passed down the habit to both of us. Apes can do many things just like us. Here’s a list of some their “Human” behaviors. ①Make tools to help them finish tasks ②Eat junk food when they’re unhappy ③Recognize faces ④Beg for food ⑤Laugh out loud. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 1.What does the new study show? A.Apes say “hi” and “bye” like humans. B.Animals don’t greet each other. C.Animal behavior is hard to study. D.Apes enjoy saying “goodbye” to other animals. 2.Why do some apes use shorter greetings? A.Because they don't like each other. B.Because they want to save time. C.Because they are lazy sometimes. D.Because they already know each other. 3.Apes can do many things just like us because __________. A.apes like to make friends with humans B.greetings are important to animals C.apes and humans have the common ancestors D.humans learned to greet each other from apes 4.From this passage, we can infer __________. A.apes can make stone knives to cut things B.apes will eat junk food when they are happy C.apes can ask for food when they are hungry D.apes will laugh out loud when they are happy 5.Where may you see this passage? A.In a storybook. B.In a textbook. C.In a science book. D.In a guide book. 【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C 4.D 5.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了研究发现大猩猩像人类一样说“嗨”和“再见”,并列举了大猩猩的一些类似人类的行为。 1.细节理解题。根据“Humans have many ways to say ‘hi’ and ‘bye’. It’s a way to be polite. Then they passed down the habit to both of us.”可知,大猩猩和人类有共同的祖先,故选C。 4.推理判断题。根据“Eat junk food when they’re unhappy”和“Laugh out loud”可知,大猩猩在不开心时会吃垃圾食品,在开心时会大笑,故选D。 5.推理判断题。本文主要介绍了大猩猩的行为习惯,属于科学研究范畴,故选C。 All pet owners know that pets use their body language to communicate with us. Since they live much simpler lives than we do and they depend on us, they need to express their needs to us. For example, squirrels (松鼠) do this with their ears, bodies and noses. Sometimes they simply want our attention. They are telling us, “My food bowl is empty.” I have one squirrel. He tells me different things. For example, when his food bowl is empty, he lets out a bowl. When he is hungry and doesn’t find food to eat, he climbs onto the table and waves his long ears on it. He jumps up on my computer desk or my lap and smells everywhere to let me know that one of the other squirrels is picking on him. New research shows that 67% of people think they understand what their pets want or need. The more we show our understanding of what they are telling us, the better our pets will be able to communicate with us and the more conversations will expand. Try to pay close attention to what your pet is “telling” you and you will find it is eager to “talk” to you. 1.The pets communicate with their owners by _________. A.spoken language B.body language C.speaking D.barking 2.If you want to communicate with your pets better, you should _________. A.have as many pets as you can B.know what they are “telling” C.buy a lot of gifts for them D.spend more money on their food 3.The underlined word “expand” means _________ in Chinese. Eye contact (接触) is one important kind of body language. ②Eye contact means looking into somebody’s eyes. It can show feelings such as friendliness, interest, understanding and so on. Not using eye contact can bring problems, but using too much is not polite either. About eye contact, people from different countries have different ideas. ③In Western countries, using eye contact in a talk is very important. If you do not use eye contact, Western people may think that you are not listening carefully. And if you look away, they may think that you are telling lies. ④In Asian countries, it is polite to look down when you talk with an old person, like your teacher or parent. The differences can make problems. A Chinese student may look down when he talks to art American teacher. And the teacher may think the student is not friendly. ⑤At last, eye contact can be the key to communication. But don’t look at another person’s eyes all the time. 1.People use eye contact to know someone’s __________. Most animals communicate by smell. Dogs are famous for this. When a dog walks outside, it learns about other dogs by smelling things. Dogs have helped the police for a long time too. They can find missing people by using their fantastic sense of smell. Mice have an excellent sense of smell too. Scientists even train them to find landmines (地雷). It is found that even ants use smell. They use smell to tell other ants where the food is. Everyone has heard birds sing. Many other animals use sound to communicate. Frogs and insects communicate with sounds. Usually the “gentlemen” make sounds to invite the “ladies”. Whales and elephants also use sound to communicate. These sounds can travel very far through water or the ground. However, it is not possible for humans to hear some of the sounds. They are either too low or too high for us. Animals always use body languages to communicate as well. When a cat puts its ears back, it is a bit mad. When it sits with its tail around itself, it is happy. When a dog puts its tail under its body, it is scared. When it wags its tail and opens its mouth, it is happy. 1.Which of the following ways of communication is NOT mentioned in the passage? A.Body languages. B.Sight. C.Sound. D.Smell. 2.Sometimes scientists can train __________ to find landmines. A.birds B.ants C.mice D.cats 3.According to the passage, some male animals make sounds to __________. First impressions are important. As they say, “You only get one chance to make a first impression.” Shaking hands firmly (坚定地) is important—people don’t like it if your hand feels like a cold fish. Eye contact is also important—you should often look at the interviewer in the eye, but don’t make him or her feel strange. Remember to use good body language after you sit down, too.You should look interested and sit up straight. If you sit in a lazy way, you will give the interviewer a very bad impression. You should show respect and interest by smiling and nodding your head when the interviewer speaks. Also, try not to hold your arms across your chest (胸部) . It will make you look bored and nervous. Make sure your face and body are turned towards the interviewer. If you are turned away from him or her, the interviewer might think you are getting ready to run out of the door! Finally, don’t shake your legs. This is impolite and makes you look nervous. If you use good body language and the right gestures, you will appearable, confident, friendly and honest. 1.People usually get ________ chance (s) to make the first impression A.one B.two C.three D.four 2.Holding your arms across your chest will make you look ________. A.lazy and bored B.annoyed and unhappy C.happy and confident D.bored and nervous 3.If you are turned away from the interviewer, she/he might think that ________. A.you are ready to leave B.you feel strange C.you are ready to listen D.you don’t like her /him 4.What does the underlined word “impolite” mean in Chinese? A.无聊的 B.不礼貌的 C.不友好的 D.没有信心的 【答案】1.A 2.D 3.A 4.B 【导语】本文主要讲述了在面试中如何通过肢体语言给面试官留下好印象。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“As they say, ‘You only get one chance to make a first impression.’”可知,人们通常只有一次机会给别人留下第一印象。故选A。 2.细节理解题。根据第三段“try not to hold your arms across your chest. It will make you look bored and nervous.”可知,双臂交叉在胸前会让你看起来无聊和紧张。故选D。 3.细节理解题。根据第四段“Make sure your face and body are turned towards the interviewer. If you are turned away from him or her, the interviewer might think you are getting ready to run out of the door!”可知,如果你背对面试官,面试官可能会认为你准备离开。故选A。 4.词义猜测题。根据最后一段“Finally, don’t shake your legs. This is impolite and makes you look nervous.”可知,摇晃双腿是……的,这会让你看起来很紧张。故划线词“impolite”意为“不礼貌的”。故选B。 If you ask people of different countries “Could you tell me the way to the post office, please?”, you will get different answers. In Japan, people use landmarks instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down the corner. Turn left at the hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.” In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within ( 在……之内) miles. So instead of landmarks, people will normally tell you directions and distance (距离). For example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.” People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give any directions. They will often say, “Follow me.” Then they will take you down the streets of the city to the post office. Sometimes if a person doesn’t know the answer to your question, he or she might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Mexico, when you don’t understand a person’s words, maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually point to the correct direction. Go on in that direction and you may find the post office. 1.How many countries are mentioned in the passage? A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six. 2.Where do people use landmarks to give directions? A.In America. B.In Mexico. C.In Greece. D.In Japan. 3.If you ask directions in Greece, what will the Greek do? A.They will give you a wrong answer. B.They will use landmarks to give directions. C.They will take you to the place you want to go to. D.They will tell you directions and distance. 4.What can we learn from the passage? A.In Mexico, people may use body language to show the way. B.In Japan, people use street names to give directions. C.In Greece, people never say “Sorry, I don’t know.” D.In America, people use landmarks to give directions. 5.Where can we probably read the passage? A.In a history book. B.In a novel. He or she will usually point to the correct direction”可知在墨西哥,人们可能会用肢体语言来指路。故选A。 5.推理判断题 。本文主要讲述了不同国家的人在给别人指路时使用的方式不同,故文章可能出现在一本旅游指南中。故选D。 If the eyes are the windows of the soul, then the body is the mirror of our feelings. If we are feeling great, we may give our body signals (信号). If we look at someone else’s body, we can often tell how they are feeling by their body signals. So reading body language signals is a great tool in daily communication. If you don’t think that learning how to read and use body language is important, here are some numbers for you. 7% of the information we receive is from what people actually say and 38% of the information we receive is from the tone and the speed of their voice; while 55% of the information we receive is from their body language. These non-verbal (非口头的) signals will help you a lot, but you still need to focus on what people are saying. If you focus too much on their body language signals, you and the person may feel uncomfortable. It’s useful to be able to read people’s language, but it’s useful to learn how to send the right signals and avoid the wrong signals too. Body language may be given several explanations. Many signals have different meanings, depending on the person and the situations (情况). Be sure of it when you are trying to read a body language signal. 1.The numbers mentioned in the second paragraph are to ________. A.explain what body language is B.show the importance of body language C.tell us body language is less used than verbal language D.tell us body language is the only tool in communication 2.According to the writer, body language is very ________. A.simple to learn B.negative to be used C.hard to understand D.helpful in communication 3.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE? A.Body language is uncomfortable. B.What people are saying is not important. C.Body language can show your feeling. D.To send wrong signals is not body language. 4.We can infer (推断) that the writer will most probably talk about ________ next. A.what the wrong body language signals are B.examples of how to understand body language correctly C.numbers about how many people wrongly use body language D.an analysis (分析) of why people wrongly understand body language 【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.B 【导语】本文介绍了肢体语言在日常交流中所扮演的重要角色。 1.推理判断题。根据“If you don’t think that learning how to read and use body language is important, here are some numbers for you. ”可知,作者列举数据是为了说明肢体语言的重要性。故选B。 2.推理判断题。根据“So reading body language signals is a great tool in daily communication.”和“It’s useful to be able to read people’s language”可推知,作者认为肢体语言很有用。故选D。 3.细节理解题。根据“... the body is the mirror of our feelings. If we are feeling great, we may give our body signals (信号).”可知,肢体语言能表达人的情感。故选C。 4.推理判断题。根据“Many signals have different meanings, depending on the person and the situations (情况). Be sure of it when you are trying to read a body language signal.”可知,很多肢体语言可能因不同的人或情况而存在不同的意义,以及要看懂肢体语言的信号;由此推知作者后续会提到如何正确理解肢体语言。故选B。 Friends are not easy to come by. True friends are harder to find. So we should do our best to make friends and keep our friendships alive (有活力的). When we are with friends, we should try to attract and bring them closer to us. Smile is one of the easiest ways. People like to see happy faces greeting them. When we talk to someone, ask questions to help him or her keep talking. Don’t ask questions that are too personal (私人的), or they may walk away. Another important part of communication (交流) is listening. Listen carefully to what people are saying, and respond in the right way. It doesn’t have to be with words. Body language can also show that you’re listening. It’s easier to make friends and keep friendships with people who have the same interests and hobbies as you do. One day he went to a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, Li Hua opened his mouth, put his fingers in it and took them out again. In this way he wanted to say “Bring me something to eat”. The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. Li Hua shook his head and the waiter understood that he didn’t want tea. So he took it away and brought him a glass of milk. Li Hua shook his head again. He was very hungry then and looked sad. He was just going to leave the restaurant when another man came in. When this man saw the waiter, he put his hands on his stomach. In a few minutes, there was a large plate of bread and meat on the table in front of him. Li Hua saw how the other person easily showed he was hungry by touching his stomach, and then got a big meal quickly. Li Hua thought this was a good idea. Her name is Amina. When Mr Yarrum introduced her, her eyes were looking down to the ground and her shoulders were curling (弯曲) forward. She was covering her face a little with the scarf on her head. Mr Yarrum helped Amina to put away her school bag and find a table and chair at a shared desk. I could understand Amina, because I was once the new kid at Gumnut Primary too. Two years ago, my mum got a new job in another city, so my family moved and I couldn’t stay at my old school. I have been the same as Amina, being introduced to a class full of new faces. This made me wonder why someone would have to leave their country and move away to the other side of the world. When the bell went for lunch, I waited around to speak with Mr Yarrum. I wanted to know why Amina and her family had moved so far away from their home to Australia. Mr Yarrum told me there was a war in her country, and they moved her to be safe. At lunchtime, I saw Amina sitting by herself on the bench (长椅). She looked lonely, so I decided to go over and sit with her. Amina didn’t speak any English, which made it a bit difficult to communicate with her. This got me thinking, maybe I could use body language to invite Amina to come and play handball with me and my other friends. I waved for her to follow me and gestured (做手势) with my hands a game of handball. ________ Amina turned out to be very good at handball, and by the end of lunch had a big smile on her face. 1.How did Amina feel when Mr Yarrum introduce her to the class? We can learn a lot about what people are thinking by watching their body language. Words are important, but the way people stand, hold their arms, and move their hands can also give us information about their feelings. ② Just like spoken language, the meanings of body language differ from culture to culture. The important thing is using body language in a way that is acceptable to the culture you are in. ③The gesture for “OK” has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, someone who sees another person using the gesture might think it means money. However, you should avoid making this gesture in Brazil, as it is not polite. Even the gestures we use for “yes” and “no” differ around the world. In many countries, shaking one’s head means “no”, and nodding means “yes”. By comparison, in Bulgaria and southern Albania, the gestures have an opposite meaning. There are also differences in how we touch each other, how close we stand to someone we are talking to, and how we act when we meet or part. In countries like France and Russia, people may kiss their friends on the face when they meet. Elsewhere, people prefer shaking hands or nodding the head when they meet someone else. ④ Some gestures seem to have the same meaning everywhere. Placing your hands together and resting them on the side of your head while closing your eyes means “sleep”. A good way of saying “I am full” is moving your hand in circles over your stomach after a meal. ⑤ Besides difference in meanings, different uses of some body language are also worth studying. Perhaps the best example is smiling. It would be a good idea to use smile to help us get through difficult time and find friends in a world of strangers. A smile can break down misunderstandings. We can use a smile to say sorry, to greet someone, to ask for help, or to start a conversation. Experts suggest smiling at yourself in the mirror to make yourself feel happier and stronger. And if we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than seeing the smiling face of a good friend. 1.In Bulgaria, if you don’t agree with your local friend, which of the following gesture will you use? A. B. C. D. 2.How does the writer develop his idea in paragraph ③? A.By giving instructions on how to use body language. B.By offering suggestions on when to use body language. C.By using examples of body language with different meanings. D.By comparing the difference between words and body language. 3.What special can we learn about the body language in Brazil? A.Nodding your head means “No”. B.It is impolite to use the gesture for “OK”. C.People hug each other when meeting their friends. D.Putting hands together on the side of your head means “sleepy”. 4.Which picture best shows the structure of the passage? A. B. C. Body language can express (表达) different feelings. We often use gestures (手势) or body movements to express our mind. For example, when someone is giving a talk, he or she may often use his or her hands to emphasize (强调) points. If you can speak English, you know a lot of English words. A.men always kiss their women friends when they meet B.women are more likely to kiss each other while men aren’t C.people would like to shake hands whenever they meet their friends D.fathers and sons often kiss each other Humans have many ways to say “hi” and “bye”. All pet owners know that pets use their body language to communicate with us. A.In an email. B.In a dictionary. C.In a storybook. D.In a travel magazine. 5.What is the structure (结构) of the passage? A. B. C. D. 进阶拓展训练5篇 People are always interested in animal communication and scientists have done a lot of researches on this subject. A.find the food B.warn others C.attract female animals D.show friendliness 4.When a cat sits with its tail around itself, it means __________. A.it is happy B.it is angry C.it is scared D.it is a bit mad 5.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.Animals seldom use body languages to communicate. B.Usually female animals can make sounds. C.Humans can hear the sound made by whales. D.Most animals can communicate with others by smell. I spend a lot of time interviewing people, and watching their body language is part of my job. B.The way to order food in a foreign country. C.A funny story about gesture communication. D.The experience of learning a foreign culture. Recently we had a new student start at Gumnut Primary. A.Nervous and shy. B.Excited but shy. C.Confident and happy. D.Lonely but hopeful. 2.Which is the correct order of the following activities? ①The writer met Amina.        ②The writer invited Amina to play. ③The writer spoke with Mr Yarrum.    ④The writer moved to Gumnut Primary. A.①④②③ B.①②④③ C.④①③② D.④③①② 3.Which of the following is the best to fill in ________ in Paragraph 4? A.She nodded and followed me to the playground. B.She refused and ran away to the classroom. C.She said something and hurried towards Mr Yarrum. D.She looked pale and went back for a rest. 4.What can we infer from the passage? A.Being confident is helpful in a new school. B.Being kind is a good way to communicate with others. C.Developing a good hobby is good for making friends. D.Speaking the same language makes a difference in friendship. ① We use both words and body language to express our thoughts and opinions in our communication with other people. A. B. C. D. We usually send and receive information through the movement of our bodies. Body language can express (表达) different feelings. We often use gestures (手势) or body movements to express our mind. For example, when someone is giving a talk, he or she may often use his or her hands to emphasize (强调) points. The victory (胜利) sign, the OK sign, the goodbye wave and the blowing of a kiss are all popular gestures in America. However, most of these gestures are not accepted (接受) by people in other countries. For example, the OK gesture means acceptance in America, but it has other meanings in other countries. In France, it means worthlessness (无价值), while in Greece it is a sign of quite disrespect (不尊重). There are some other differences in the non-verbal (非语言的) messages of people of different sexes (性别). In American culture, men usually sit or stand with their legs apart and hands outward, while women usually keep their legs together and their hands at their sides. Women sit quietly than men most of the time. Women are also better than men at expressing themselves using gestures. In short, body language is simple and useful, so we should learn how to use it in our daily lives. 1.Which gestures are talked about in this passage? ①the stop sign ②the OK sign ③the goodbye sign ④the quiet sign ⑤the victory sign ⑥the kiss sign A.①②③⑤ B.②③⑤⑥ C.①③⑤⑥ D.②③④⑤ 2.The OK gesture means worthlessness in ________.
