The other day, I was waiting for a train angrily. The train was late, which meant I would be late to meet a friend at the theater. Like many people, I hate being late. However, I often find myself running late. What’s the problem? Michaela Thomas, a psychology expert, says I’m a “time optimist”. “Time optimists” often wrongly predict how long something will take. As a result, they are often late for meetings or rush things at the last minute.
“Time optimists” get into trouble. Their lateness makes people around them angry, and they go through a lot of stress themselves. How can they fix their ways?
Grace Pacie has written a book about “time optimists”. In the book she says, “Time optimists usually plan to be on time, not ahead of time.” So she suggests they should create a pre-event deadline. For example, if your dancing class starts at 8 p.m., tell yourself to arrive at 7:30 p.m. She says, “It’s important to leave time for things to go wrong. Not all the lights are going to be green.”
But Fuschia Sirois, a psychologist, says that the problem of “Time optimists” is not only about their time management, but also about their poor feeling management. Sometimes, people have too much going on with their work and family, and they often go for the easy fix—to procrastinate. Sirois suggests having a better understanding of your future self. For example, you are up against a deadline, but you are feeling tired and want to put off the task. Ask yourself: “Will I magically be energetic on the second day? If I can’t really do it all tomorrow, why not start doing it today?” In fact, that future you will probably feel even more stressed about the task when it’s late.
38. The writer tells his own story in the beginning to _________.
A. show the bad traffic in Europe B. explain the reason for his lateness
C. interest readers in psychology D. lead into the topic “time optimists”
39. What does Grace Pacie mean by saying the underlined sentence “Not all the traffic lights are going to be green.”?
A It never rains but pours. B. Put all your eggs in one basket.
C. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
40. According to the passage, typical “time optimists” _________.
A. always exactly tell how long something will take
B. often miss a train because of unexpected things
C. usually arrive a bit early to meet their friends
D. seldom wait for the last minute to get things done
41. According to the passage, which are the ways to solve the problem of lateness?
a. setting a pre-event deadline b. putting off the tasks
c. knowing better about your future self d. planning to be on time
A. ac B. bc C. ad D. bd

At the 2025 Spring Festival Gala (Year of the Snake), 16 humanoid robots named “Fuxi” amazed the world. Dressed in Northeast-style floral-patterned jackets, they danced Yangge with Xinjiang artists. Famous director Zhang Yimou called it “a dialogue between ancient wisdom and AI”.
These robots, made by Chinese company Unitree, moved like real humans. They could twist their waists, kick legs, and even spin handkerchiefs—a classic Yangge skill. Engineers shared that teaching the robots these moves took nearly three months of daily practice. Special sensors helped them follow human dancers’ steps perfectly.
Unitree named this model of robots “Fuxi”, which shares the same pronunciation with an ancient ancestor of the Chinese nation, symbolizing the beautiful blessings brought by technology.
This robot dance does more than entertain. It helps protect culture in new ways. Using special videos, engineers can record exactly how the old artists move. When 78-year-old Ms. Zhao, a Yangge expert, danced with her handkerchief, 3D cameras were used to record her every move in detail. “Now, even children a hundred years from now can learn the real Yangge,” she said with a happy smile. With the help of this technology, the traditional dance moves can be accurately preserved, ensuring that the essence of Yangge is passed down through generations.
The robots also make Chinese culture travel farther. Over 200 million people worldwide watched the show online. A French teenager commented: “Robots + tradition = cool China!” This technology helps save and share traditions.
43. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A. the Year of the Snake B. the wisdom
C. the Yangge performance D. Xinjiang dancers
44. How long did it nearly take the robots to master the moves?
A. 20 days B. 30 days C. 60 days D. 90 days
45. Why was the name “Fuxi” chosen?
A. To honor modern engineers. B. To connect technology with Chinese roots.
C. To attract foreign audiences. D. To honor the Snake Year.
46. How does technology help protect Yangge?
A. By recording artists’ movements. B. By making better costumes.
C. By training more engineers. D. By selling robot videos.
47. What made the show reach foreign audiences?

How did you learn to speak Chinese? By copying how the people around you (like your parents) spoke, right? Children throughout the world pick up their first language in this way. The environment is important for you to learn a language.
What if you were raised in an environment where people spoke hundreds of languages? Let’s imagine a boy. He grows up in a global airport, talking to visitors from all over the world every day. Could such a child later be able to speak hundreds of languages?
According to language researchers, the answer to that question is “probably not”. One problem is time. If you are learning 365 languages in a year, you can’t have more than one full day to learn each one. Nobody can learn a new language within just one day. But there is another more important thing: what you want. Your mind isn’t a sponge. It doesn’t naturally take in everything around you. It pays attention to the world and develops feelings about it. That plays a big role in how you learn.
Let’s go back to the imaginary airport above. If the flight is put off suddenly, there are some people who have to stay at the airport. A person is arguing with workers in a strange language, and the child may heed. At the same time, another person is politely talking with workers in a strange language. And he helps other people solve the problem. Everyone praises him. What will the child think of the two people? He may think the second person is cool and may want to learn that person’s language.
So to learn lots of languages, you don’t just need a proper environment. Time and a desire to pick up those languages matter a lot, too.
48. What is the common thing about children’s learning their first language?
A. They learn everything quickly.
B. They don’t know things they learn.
C. They are greatly influenced by people around them.
D. They usually start from copying everything they hear.
49. How does the writer support his opinion in Paragraph 2?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers. C. By using sayings. D. By giving examples.
50. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Learning all the languages is impossible.
B. Learning a language needs full attention.
C. Learning languages needs time and attention.
D. Learning a new language in a day will come true.
51. What does the underlined word “heed” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. hurt B. notice C. break D. show
52. What’s the writer’s purpose for writing the passage?
A. To discuss what influence the language learning.
B. To introduce which the best way is to learn languages.
C. To explain how rules in learning languages developed.
D. To show why environment is important in language learning.

39 What does Grace Pacie mean by saying the underlined sentence “Not all the traffic lights are going to be green.”?
A. It never rains but pours.
41. According to the passage, which are the ways to solve the problem of lateness?
a. setting a pre-event deadline b. putting off the tasks
c. knowing better about your future self d. planning to be on time
A. ac B. bc C. ad D. bd
42. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?
