When Ben Edlavitch was in elementary school, his grandfather, David Levine, got him his first Lego set. Growing up in Richmond, Edlavitch enjoyed plenty of quality time with his grandfather. From Edlavitch’s young age, the two shared countless hours tending to Levine’s 1926 Ford Model A, which developed in them a working rapport (融洽) that served them well when they participated as contestants on the fourth season of Lego Masters, a reality competition show on Fox, in the fall of 2023.
Edlavitch and Levine were among 12 teams chosen from over 2,000 applicants to appear on the show, hosted by Lego Batman himself, Will Arnett. Over the course of the show, the teams were tasked with creating original builds for a chance to win $100,000 and the title of Lego Master. To prepare for it, Edlavitch says, “We spent a lot of time together figuring out Lego techniques... We studied past seasons to see what the judges liked and responded to.”
For Edlavitch, 21, a student at the University of Virginia studying community-focused architecture, Lego bricks build a lifetime of “play”, an essential aspect of his approach to architecture. “Lego teaches you a world perspective (视角), which is that you can take anything apart and put it back together again in a way that makes it better,” he says, “and that, I think, is what got me into architecture.”
Aside from his builds on Lego Masters, Edlavitch has created a 433-brick model of the Richmond skyline and a Richmond city block. Moreover, Edlavitch says he will offer kids’ workshops that combine Lego and architecture in an approachable way, introducing the field to a new generation through “play”.
According to Edlavitch, most people don’t think about architecture very seriously as a career until later high school or college, at which point a lot of these kind of old-fashioned programs are considered too late to get started, and this leads to a less diverse and less creative field. He hopes, through his builds and workshops, to model a different approach.
24. How was Edlavitch and his grandfather’s performance at the show?
A. Unsatisfying. B. Unexpected. C. Excellent. D. Worrying.
25. What did Edlavitch and his grandfather do for the show?
A. They arranged three seasons. B. They consulted Lego Batman.
C. They interviewed the judges. D. They studied Lego techniques.
26. What does Edlavitch think of “play”?
A. It is important for learning architecture. B. It takes up much of his study time.
C. It fails to open opportunities for creation. D. It is meaningless for a new generation.
27. Why does Edlavitch decide to provide workshops for kids?
A. To offer chances for them to recognize Lego.
B. To develop their interest in architecture.
C. To encourage them to be more serious.
D. To show his talent in building Lego.
C 25. D 26. A 27. B

The world’s oceans, lakes and rivers are under increasing pressure from climate change, growing demand, urbanization, and pollution, threatening their ability to sustain life.
“Without better data to understand the health of increasingly stressed waterways, the fight to save these most precious resources will be ineffective,” said the co-founder of a technology company. “Virtually every waterway is polluted to an extent where the ecosystem just can’t balance back anymore,” he explains.
The company is aiming to fill that information gap using fishlike robots that collect data from underwater environments. Powered by batteries, they are designed to look and swim like fish. The standard version is about 1.3 meters long and weighs 30 kilograms and can be equipped with cameras and sensors to measure oxygen, salinity (盐度) and pH levels.
The founder was motivated to build the robots after his eight-year-old daughter learned about the ocean crisis and asked him to help protect the seas. He says it’s important that the robots can integrate into natural habitats — swimming among other creatures without disturbing them and moving around obstacles smoothly.
The company has put its technology to use in different regions. It has operated in both fresh and saltwater, near dams, and in harbors and fish farms, checking things like water quality and fish health and collecting data wherever they go. The CEO of the company said its technology could be used in the region for water management, sustainable aquaculture (水产养殖) operations, and monitoring the health of corals.
Still, the company has some blocks to clear before its fishlike robots will be seen cruising (游弋) through the world’s waterways. “We need capital to commercialize,” said the CEO, “but there are very few people who are willing to actually support those that are doing frontier technologies in the waterways.” The founder hopes more funding will follow. He said, “Investors should absolutely wake up.”
28. What is the purpose of the first two paragraphs?
A. To introduce the topic of the text.

A. They can lead other fishes.
B. They can easily catch children’s eyes.
C. They work efficiently under the water.
D. They can swim without being recharged.
30. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The launch of a new program. B. The application of the technology.
C. Management of the company. D. Development of the company.
31. What problem does the company face currently?
A. How to make people focus on technology.
B. How to keep investors positive.
C. How to produce more robots.
D. How to collect more money.

Is comprehension the same whether a person reads a text onscreen or on paper? And are listening to and viewing content as effective as reading the written word when covering the same material? The answers to both questions are often “no”. The reasons relate to a variety of factors, including reduced concentration, an entertainment mindset (心态) and a tendency to multitask while consuming digital content.
When reading texts of several hundred words or more, learning is generally more successful when it’s on paper than onscreen. A large amount of research confirms this finding. The benefits of print reading particularly shine through when experimenters move from posing simple tasks — like identifying the main idea in a reading passage — to ones that require mental abstraction — such as drawing inferences from a text.
The differences between print and digital reading results are partly related to paper’s physical properties. With paper, there is a literal laying on of hands, along with the visual geography of distinct pages. People often link their memory of what they’ve read to how far into the book it was or where it was on the page.
But equally important is the mental aspect. Reading researchers have proposed a theory called “shallowing hypothesis (假说)”. According to this theory, people approach digital texts with a mindset suited to social media, which are often not so serious, and devote less mental effort than when they are reading print.
Audio (音频) and video can feel more engaging than text, and so university teachers increasingly turn to these technologies — say, assigning an online talk instead of an article by the same person. However, psychologists have demonstrated that when adults read news stories, they remember more of the content than if they listen to or view identical pieces.
Digital texts, audio and video all have educational roles, especially when providing resources not available in print. However, for maximizing learning where mental focus and reflection are called for, educators shouldn’t assume all media are the same, even when they contain identical words.
32. What does the underlined phrase “shine through” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Seem unlikely to last. B. Seem hard to explain.
C. Become ready to use. D. Become easy to notice.
33. What does the shallowing hypothesis assume?
A. Readers treat digital texts lightly. B. Digital texts are simpler to understand.
C. People select digital texts randomly. D. Digital texts are suitable for social media.
34. Why are audio and video increasingly used by university teachers?
A. They can hold students' attention. B. They are more convenient to prepare.
C. They help develop advanced skills. D. They are more informative than text.
35. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Students should apply multiple learning techniques.
B. Teachers should produce their own teaching material.
C. Print texts cannot be entirely replaced in education.
D. Education outside the classroom cannot be ignored.
D 33. A 34. A 35. C
根据前文“When reading texts of several hundred words or more, learning is generally more successful when it’s on paper than onscreen. A large amount of research confirms this finding.(当阅读几百字或更多的文本时,在纸上学习通常比在屏幕上学习更成功。大量的研究证实了这一发现)”可知,在纸上学习更有成效,以及后文“when experimenters move from posing simple tasks — like identifying the main idea in a reading passage — to ones that require mental abstraction — such as drawing inferences from a text.(当实验人员从提出简单的任务(如识别阅读文章的主旨)转移到需要思维抽象的任务(如从文本中推断)时)”推知,此处应是表达“当实验者从简单的任务转向需要精神抽象的任务时,纸质阅读的益处就变得显而易见”之意,所以shine through应是“显而易见”之意,和D项意思相近。
根据第四段“But equally important is the mental aspect. Reading researchers have proposed a theory called “shallowing hypothesis (假说)”. According to this theory, people approach digital texts with a mindset suited to social media, which are often not so serious, and devote less mental effort than when they are reading print.(但同样重要的是精神层面。阅读研究人员提出了一个名为“shallowing hypothesis”的理论。根据这一理论,人们以适合社交媒体的心态接触数字文本,这些文本通常不那么严肃,与阅读印刷品时相比,投入的精神努力也更少)”可知,shallowing hypothesis假设读者在阅读数字文本时会持有一种轻松的心态,不会像阅读纸质书籍那样投入太多的心理努力。故选A项。
根据第五段“Audio (音频) and video can feel more engaging than text, and so university teachers increasingly turn to these technologies — say, assigning an online talk instead of an article by the same person.(音频和视频可能比文本更具吸引力,因此大学教师越来越多地转向这些技术,例如分配在线讲座而不是同一作者的文章)”可知,音频和视频比文本更能吸引学生的注意力,所以大学教师越来越多地使用这些技术。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Digital texts, audio and video all have educational roles, especially when providing resources not available in print. However, for maximizing learning where mental focus and reflection are called for, educators shouldn’t assume all media are the same, even when they contain identical words.(数字文本、音频和视频都具有教育作用,尤其是在提供印刷品中无法获得的资源时。然而,为了在需要精神集中和反思的情况下最大限度地学习,教育工作者不应假定所有媒体都是相同的,即使它们包含相同的单词)”可知,尽管数字文本、音频和视频在教育中有一定作用,但当需要精神集中和反思以最大化学习时,教育者不应假定所有媒体都是相同的,即使它们包含相同的单词。这表明作者认为纸质文本在教育中的作用仍然不可替代,因此暗示纸质文本在教育中的重要性。故选C项。

So when they’re asked “How are you?” in English, they don’t know what to do.
In English-speaking ____59____(country), “How are you?” has one standard answer: “Fine, and you?” That’s because “How are you?” is not actually about getting information—it’s a greeting. If a native English-speaking friend really wants to know ____60____is going on in your life, he or she is more likely ____61____(ask): “What have you been up to?” or “What’s new?”
But I understand why people are so ____62____(confuse). When we learn second languages, we have to learn rules for using words as much as words ____63____(them). How can you learn those rules? ____64____(watch) English-language TV shows is a good place to start. If you can, try to make a native English-speaking friend and talk to him or her _____65_____(direct).
56. wrote
57. in 58. which/that
59. countries
60. what 61. to ask
62. confused
63. themselves
64. Watching
65. directly
文章主要讲述了“How are you?”
“in a/an+形容词+manner”,固定短语,“用……的方式”。故填in。
故填which/that。
故填what。
或“有什么新消息?”“be (more) likely to do sth”,固定短语,“(更)有可能做某事”。故填to ask。
结合句子“When we learn second languages, we have to learn rules for using words as much as words ____8____ (them)”含义可知,此句强调当学习第二语言时,不仅要学习单词本身,还要学习单词的使用规则,因此所填空应是反身代词,根据空前“words”可知,反身代词为themselves。

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last Friday.
We were tasked to draw or paint something that impressed us most. Inspired by the fantastic scenery, I decided to create a watercolor painting of the small bridge over the park’s pond, surrounded by blooming flowers.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded by nature not only sparked my creativity but also offered a much-needed break from the usual hustle and bustle of school life. I felt a deep sense of peace as I painted.

Shavi, a homeless dog, suffered a terrifying moment on the deserted streets of south- west Russia during a bitter winter. Fortunately, a warm-hearted vet (兽医) happened upon the scene, his compassion driving him to provide the much -needed care and attention. Through tireless efforts and treatment, Shavi’s broken bones began to heal. After launching an appeal to find someone who could look after Shavi, the vet found Nina Baranovskaya, a well-known doctor with a passion for aiding animals, who collected her and helped her to walk again.
With a heart full of thanks, Shavi turned a new chapter of her journey under the loving care of Nina. Day by day, Shavi regained her strength and confidence. The bond between Shavi and Nina deepened with each passing moment. They spent countless happy hours together, playing in the park, chasing butterflies, and enjoying each other’s company (陪伴) . Nina loved these simple yet precious moments, finding comfort and joy in Shavi’s loyalty and playful behavior. Together, they formed a beautiful partnership, united by love and the shared happiness of companionship.
Nina’s life took an unexpected turn when she got a new job that made her move to another city. Sadly, she couldn’t keep Shavi in her new small apartment. Luckily, one of Nina’s friends decided to adopt Shavi, who, however, lived 185miles away, close to the Russian border. But just days after settling into his new home, Shavi disappeared silently.
D To show his talent in building Lego.

B. To state the importance of the text.
C. To explain the urgency of water resources.
D. To weaken the seriousness of water pollution.
29. Which is one of the advantages of the robots?

The reasons relate to a variety of factors including reduced concentration, an entertainment mindset (心态) and a tendency to multitask while consuming digital content.
